2016 was such a fantastic year for music that I promised myself I'd do a countdown for it. I'm a procrastinator, so here we are just in time for the 2017 countdown season.

2016 was the best year for albums ever. Period. I'll be doing the singles countdown first though.

Eligibility is any single released from 01/12/2015 to 30/11/2016. Since we're in the post-digital age I'll be using the term "single" loosely to include promo-singles and anything I consider more than an album cut. Singles from albums released prior to the eligibility period are also eligible.

I've added a poll featuring eight songs featured I've listened to in 2016. Some I listened to a lot, some a little.
One of them is #1, so have a guess.

I went with Charli XCX since she is, by your estimation, the best pop artist of the decade.

I initially thought I'd be doing a top 200, but I ended up with a lot of songs when curating my list. Here are the ones that just missed the top 300. You'll be getting artwork for each song and commentary further up the chart.

Meghan Trainor - Better (feat. Yo Gotti)
Mollie King - Back to You
These were two of the last artists I expected to produce two of my highlights of the year but they did. Undeserved flops.

Coldplay - Hymn for the Weekend
Good song but I prefer the Seeb remix.

thanks for all the comments, i love my fans.

i didn't realise there were so many megatrons on ukmix. she did well to make the top 325 with 2 songs considering All About That Bass and Lips Are Movin' are two of the worst pop songs of the decade.

The next section features Adele doing her best Jessie Ware impression, Tinashe giving Britney a helping hand, big hits from Desiigner, Drake, Calvin Harris & Clean Bandit, hidden gems from Rosie Lowe, Mahalia, Pusha T & TWENTY88, and Bebe Rexha trying her best.

I usually enjoy everything Charli releases, but not that blot in her discography between Sucker and Number 1 Angel. :-?
What was she thinking.

"Hymn for the Weekend" is beautiful, and not just because of Beyoncé's gorgeous chorus, though that certainly helps things. "No" was my BOP for about 24 hours.

301 Nick Jonas - Under You
308 Meghan Trainor - NO
313 Gorgon City - All Four Walls (feat. Vaults)
322 Coldplay - Hymn for the Weekend
324 Justin Bieber - Company
325 Little Mix - Hair (feat. Sean Paul)

"Rockabye" is brilliant! Definitely the best song Clean Bandit have ever released.

256 Drake - Too Good (feat. Rihanna)
264 TWENTY88 - Selfish
265 Alicia Keys - Blended Family (What You Do for Love) [feat. A$AP Rocky]
269 Clean Bandit - Rockabye (feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie)

"Slumber Party" was among my Top 10 songs released last year. The Tinashe remix really sells the song for me, and the video is uber sexy. "Double Tap" is beneath Jordin's capabilities, but it was cute for a few spins.

279 Adele - Water under the Bridge
289 Britney Spears - Slumber Party (feat. Tinashe)
294 John Legend - Penthouse Floor (feat. Chance the Rapper)
296 Jordin Sparks - Double Tap (feat. 2 Chainz)
299 Calvin Harris - This Is What You Came For (feat. Rihanna)

Accurate.

We lose our first poll option in the form of DNCE's Cake by the Ocean at #202. Sometimes I think this song is pop songwriting at its best, while at other times it just seems like mindless radio fodder to me. Either way, it's nice to see Joe Jonas getting a third shot at a music career. That's the highest of DNCE's three entries in the 2016 countdown. None of you picked this option in the poll, so I guess you know me well enough to know it had no chance at #1.

The first single from Ariana's Dangerous Woman album finishes at #210; however she has three more entries higher up the countdown. ZAYN makes his only entry in the 2016 countdown with his debut single PILLOWTALK one place behind Ariana.

Massive Attack, Anderson .Paak, Princess Nokia, The Weekend & Anne-Marie also make appearances in this update. Expect to see more from all of them further up the countdown.

Charli XCX manages to chart at #226 and #240 in the form of a writing credit on will.i.am's Pia Mia collaboration Boys & Girls, a Rostam assisted remix of Jim-E-Stack's Deadstream, in addition to her Mr Oizo feature which dropped in the previous update.

Here are some songs I listened to a lot during 2016 as we enter the top 200.

Among those tracks we have two final entries from generic bop maker Hailee Steinfeld, Adele's best song from 25, and the first solo entries from newcomers RAYE and Dua Lipa, who have already charted with features and have several solo entries further up the chart.

There are a ton of bops that flew under the radar from the likes of Lao Ra, Kero Kero Bonito, Flume, Zak Abel, Liv Dawson & Tkay Maidza. Dave, Chance The Rapper, ScHoolboy Q & YG deliver some of the rap highlights of the year, while Gwen Stefani, Shakira & Xtina are music legends who made a small dent on my chart in 2016.

Love the vibe of "Let Me Love You"! "When We Were Young" isn't anything new from Adele, but I really enjoyed it anyway.

156 Drake - One Dance (feat. Wizkid & Kyla)
161 Ariana Grande - Let Me Love You (feat. Lil Wayne)
168 Adele - When We Were Young

173 Gwen Stefani - Make Me Like You

"Chantaje" is decent. I must admit that I expected a bit more from the video, though.

198 Shakira - Chantaje (feat. Maluma)
