Welcome to my Year-End Charts 2017!

As every year, this year i'll proudly present you the 100 most successful singles and the 50 most successful albums from my weekly chart plus the yearly Mammy Awards. The singles countdown will start around Christmas, with the album countdown following afterwards, and the Mammy Awards 2018 being presented once the countdowns are over. And since i'm super excited for this to start, i will give some teasers even before all of this, in form of some 'genre highlights'.

As usual, all songs and albums that made the weekly chart during 2017 will be revealed. All these bubbling under positions will be revealed at once shortly before the main countdowns start.

Completely new this year is a rule for old releases. Since new releases, especially being released in the last quarter of the year, are having a disadvantage against old ones, i decided to use a new formula for singles and albums that were released in 2016 or earlier on the Year-End Charts. If a song or an album was released in 2016, its points for the countdown are reduced by 10%, if it was released in 2015, its points are reduced by 20% and so on, up to being released in 2007 and getting the points reduced by 90% (My Charts started in 2007, so releases from 2007 or earlier have a reduction of 90%).

Other than that, the rules remain the same. A weekly #1 gets 40 points (single) / 20 points (album), a weekly #2 gets 39 points (single) / 19 points (album) and so on. These points are all added and the result is this countdown.

Last years countdown: Tansike's Year-End Charts 2016 / Mammy Awards 2017
The weekly chart: My Charts

I hope you guys enjoy this years countdown!
Greetings, Tansike

Neat presentation!

I've done a fairly decent job in following your charts this year, and I think I'm going to enjoy the songs countdown. Kudos to you for being able to compile a Top 50 albums list; it took a concerted effort on my part to get to half that number!
And the category is: LIVE. WORK. POSE!

Can't wait to see "Spirit Animal" and Tarja's singles smashing.

Thank you all for the nice words! :D

@ Akini: There were actually over 100 albums which made my weekly chart during 2017 (obviously including albums which were released prior 2017 as well) :o

I've just created a poll, so you guys can guess who the number one will be on the Year-End Charts! :)

I voted for Kerli since you loved her EP that much and she almost went to Eurovision this year.

But I also think that those Halsey and Zara chics can go far.

Interesting votes so far - 3 for Kerli against 1 for Ed, Kesha, Marina and Zara against 0 for all others :)
Keep them votes coming, always interesting to see who you guys think will make it :)

The first 'genre highlight' thingy comes later today. I'm just doing these for fun btw, as i'm way too excited for the YEC to start (yet i still have to wait around two weeks, until the final weekly chart of the year is done)

As usual, Pop music dominated the charts this year as well, so I really have to do more than just one part for that, as there’s been too many good pop singles and albums which were released in 2017. But, I don’t even want to highlight the obvious, successful ones, more like a few underrated and in my opinion really strong ones.

A first highlight when it comes to pop music is definitely Rachel Platten. The singer has released her second major-label album “Waves” in October as the follow-up to “Wildfire”, which came out in the first week of 2016 and named the hits “Fight Song” and “Stand By You” its own. “Waves” is an album full of great pop tunes, so if someone appreciates good pop music, “Waves” is 100% worth a check-out. The singles ”Broken Glass” and ”Perfect For You” are already highlights on their own and two of the best pop singles of 2017, but tracks like ”Collide” and ”Shivers”, which are both very Carly-Rae-Jepsen-Emotion-ish, really prove that Rachel knows how good pop music has to sound like.

Being released just a week prior “Waves” but being on a similar level is Marina Kaye's second album "Explicit". The album is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed debut "Fearless" by the singer from France with the strong voice. Her debut spawned hits like "Homeless" and the Sia-written "Freeze You Out", so it's no surprise to hear some other similarities to Sia on this record. If you like the balladic side of the Australian singer, you will definitely find a few tracks you will like on "Explicit" too. Personally, the ballad and second single "Something" is the obvious standout, with Marina using her good voice, but not doing it over-the-top, alongside touching lyrics. But Marina also knows how do slay with power pop tracks à la "On My Own" and the melodic "Save Yourself".

The third album i'd like to highlight is the four-track-EP "Ten Years" by sister duo Aly & AJ. Following a ten years hiatus, the duo released their first new music in 2017 with the single "Take Me", an 80s inspired dream-pop-track. As if the track itself wouldn't be good enough, they also released a really good video for it, and as if this wouldn't be enough, the EP contains three more songs which are just as good as the single. Definitely worth a check out, too!

When it comes to single releases which weren't released alongside a new album or EP, there are two i have to mention in this Genre Highlight's: Pop #1, and that's "Cut To The Feeling" by Canadian Pop-Maestro Carly Rae Jepsen and "I'm Stuck" by Miley Cyrus' little sister Noah Cyrus. It's no secret that Carly Rae Jepsen is not only seen as a pop maestro under her fans, but she's seen that way from pop fans in general, so it's no surprise her soundtrack single "Cut To The Feeling" belongs to the best pop songs of the year, unfortunately also to the most underrated ones. Even more underrated is Noah Cyrus, who has released some awesome tunes in 2017. While her collaboration with XXXTENTACION called "Again" is one of the best songs in 2017, her previous country-influenced happy-pop-track "I'm Stuck" definitely deserves some recognition as well. It's basically on the same level like Hilary Duff's "All About You" or some of Taylor Swift's earlier songs from a time when she still made some country bops.

2017 spawned some really nice releases in the country genre. Country is a genre I’m getting more and more into over the past few years, mainly thanks to artists like Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift, which made it easier with their pop influences. Some ‘real’ country artists are still missing on my personal charts though, as it’s usually the country stuff with some other influences like pop or rock which gets my attention, so this genre highlight is definitely NOT for people who are already familiar with that genre, but more like for others who like to try it out.

From the ones I checked out during 2017, two really got a lot of my attention, and that are the second album “Road Less Traveled” by Lauren Alaina and RaeLynn's debut album “WildHorses”. I can already reveal that both will have their time to shine – at least more or less – on my Year-End Countdown, so I won’t go into them here in the genre highlights, as I want to go into four other albums I’ve really enjoyed.

The first two are “From A Room: Vol. 1” and “From A Room: Vol. 2” by Chris Stapleton. The singer had a phenomenal last two and a half years with his debut album “Traveller” being a monstreous success in the States. While I never heard this one in full (only a few songs, including the hit single “Tennessee Whiskey”), I checked out both of his 2017 releases and both are really good. While both Volumes have no weak song on them, Volume 2's "Scarecrow in the Garden" is definitely the highlight of them all, being a catchy, happy-making Country-uptempo track, sung with Chris' really strong and smoky vocals. Overall, it's his uptempo side which is more pleasing to me, so other favorites i would name are "Second One To Know" and "Them Stems".

The third album is Little Big Town’s eighth studio album “The Breaker”. While i'm familiar with Little Big Town's biggest hits "Pontoon", "Girl Crush" and "Pain Killer", i never came around with checking out one of their full-length releases until 2017, when they released "The Breaker" following a very pleasing lead single "Better Man". The album turned out to be less Country than expected, having quite a lot of Pop influences and lots of ballads, so "Better Man" was definitely a good introduction for the whole project. Other than the lead single, "Night On Our Side" and "Lost In California" are even better standouts and definitely worth a check out; and if you like them and/or the lead, "The Breaker" is 100% worth to check out too.

Lady Antebellum owns the last album I’d like to highlight from the Country genre, and they’re also the only artist here that I was already familiar with before 2017. It’s been already nearly seven years since they swept the Grammys with “Need You Now”, and yet they are still making really good country pop music. “Heart Break” was their newest output following a short break, and while the set definitely is far away from being their best work, it still contains some nice little gems, such as the uptempo track ”Teenage Heart ” or the ballads "Hurt" and ”Famous”. It’s actually on a similar level like Little Big Town’s “The Breaker”, so if you enjoy a few songs of one of them, it’s worth to check out the other as well.

The Dance/Electronic genre had a kind of a revival in the past few years, but to be honest i thought 2017 wasn't its best year. The usual DJ's and Producers released their stuff, but they were weaker than usual. After all, there were still some releases worth a highlight, so here we go.

The first mention is a very current one, as it's "Nirvana" by Inna, which came out two weeks ago. The Romanian dance-pop queen is very reliable when it comes to dance music, having served tons of bops since her breakthrough with "Hot" nearly eight years ago. This year, she already smashed the internet with "Ruleta", a typical Inna-summer-tune with a catchy hook. With "Nirvana", she not only delivered another great dance album, but probably even her strongest as a full release, as nearly every track is strong on its own, but even stronger all together. "Hands Up" is an obvious highlight, but i really, really recommend this whole project if you're into good, catchy and commercial dance-pop music. Even overall a huge highlight of the year, only less than a month before it ends!

A big surprise to me was Loreen's "Nude" EP. The Swedish singer and ESC queen of 2012 took YEARS to finally release an EP, and the expectations were huge as her debut album "Heal" was and still is outstanding, and the singles since then were quite good as well, especially "I'm In It With You". "Nude" is probably not typical Dance/Electronic stuff but i still think it fits best to this genre, especially due to the lead "Body", but also the two other tracks are strong, with "Ocean Away" being a dreamy ballad with an hypnotic beat, and "Jungle" an awesome collaboration with fellow Swedish musician Elliphant.

Another strong but also questionable release was Calvin Harris' "Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1". Questionable because it has lots of influences coming from the Urban/R&B genre, but it's still Calvin after all, so this release may fit to both genres. The single "Feels" with Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams and Big Sean is not only one of the big hits of 2017, but also an obvious album highlight, however, with "Skrt On Me" or the other singles "Heatstroke" and "Faking It" the album has a lot more to offer than "Feels".

Other Dance/Electronic albums i think are worth a check out: "Where I Won't Be Found" by Seven Lions, "Stargazing"/"Kids In Love" by Kygo and "Uncovered" by Robin Schulz.

Urban / R&B is probably the most difficult Genre to me, as it's the one i'm the least into compared to others. However, 2017 also had some promising records, and here i'd like to highlight two albums and a single which are 100% worth some mentions.

The first album is "Damn." by Kendrick Lamar. Since Kendrick got a lot of attention at the Grammys with his last album "To Pimp A Butterfly" in early 2016, i'm always looking out for his releases, even if i'm still not the biggest fan. However, he made it possible for me to get into Rap albums, which is a really rare feat, so props to him for doing so. "Damn." is definitely another great body of work, however it's still weaker than "To Pimp A Butterfly", most likely simply because the other one was so good. Anyways, no matter what you're thinking about this genre or Kendrick, "Damn." is a MUST to check out this year, with "Humble." being the obvious favorite and "Love." being a highlight as well.

Despite being weaker than many of his previous releases, "Heartbreak On A Full Moon" by Chris Brown is another release i'd like to mention here. The album is far from being bad, but also far from being outstanding, however, what makes it worth a mention is that it contains an incredible 45 songs with a length of nearly three hours! It's most likely the very first album where you need a toilet break while listening to it. This can be exhausting on one side, especially if you're not the biggest Chris fan and really try to listen to the whole in one session, but it can also be very enjoyable, as the album still has some nice songs to offer, and there's definitely at least one song for everyone. Personally, i'm more into his Pop influenced songs, so my highlights and the tracks i'd recommend are "If You’re Down", "Nowhere", ”Bite My Tongue” and "I Love Her".

Last but not least, the Urban/R&B-Highlight of the year for me was Cardi B's breakthrough single "Bodak Yellow". There’s not a lot I can add to this song as there’s been written enough, but “Bodak Yellow” is definitely a very well deserved success for the highly sympathetic and authentic Cardi B. Watching this climbing all the way up to #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 was so exciting, and here’s hope there’s still a lot more to come from Cardi B in 2018.

It’s no secret that I’m a huge Rock fan, especially Symphonic metal stuff, so there will be a few albums and songs on the main countdowns from that genre, but there’s also still enough to highlight here. One or more of these will also appear on the countdowns, but I still wanted to mention these releases in the genre highlight as well.

The first is some kind of a folk-metal-album. Following their departure from the Swiss folk-metal band Eluveitie, Anna Murphy and two former band members found the new band Cellar Darling, who released their debut album ”This Is The Sound” in 2017. Eluveitie were already very famous, even outside of Switzerland they’re one of the most popular bands from that genre, however, I actually discovered Cellar Darling and Eluveitie at the same time in 2017. ”This Is The Sound” is a fantastic debut if you’re into rock music, and it’s not even as folksy or symphonic as expected. There are some nice folk elements, for example on the lead single and album opener ”Avalanche”, which is also by far the highlight of the record. ”Hedona” (unfortunately no Audio available) is another strong track, while single ”Black Moon” gives a great picture of how the whole album sounds.

Dutch symphonic metal band Epica has the second record I’d like to highlight. ”The Solace System” was promoted just as an EP, but still has a length of over 30 minutes, which is quite a lot for an EP. The band is in the business for some time but was always behind the likes of Within Temptation or Nightwish, but with this release, they proved they’re doing an A Game as well. Symphonic metal at its best. Highlights are ”Fight Your Demons” and ”Decoded Poetry”.

Going from Rock to Alternative, “Native Invader” by Tori Amos is the third album which definitely deserves a special mention here. It’s the singer-songwriters fifteenth album, but only the second I heard after hearing ”Scarlet's Walk” through an Album Cup on UKMix, and it caught me by surprise. “Native Invader” is an amazing body of work, being strong from start to finish. The opening track ”Reindeer King” is already a gem and gives you the perfect mood for the whole album. The single ”Up The Creek” is another highlight and the most commercial song on the record. ”Bang”, ”Wings” and ”Broken Arrow” would be other standouts.

Other Rock/Alternative albums worth a check out: ”Utopia” by Björk, ”Truth Is A Beautiful Thing” by London Grammar and ”When I Was Young EP” by MØ.

And here’s the last Genre Highlight – the second edition for Pop!

Vanessa Mai owns the first album I’d like to highlight. Vanessa is a singer from Germany who also sings in German, and while she used to do purely Schlager music with her band Wolkenfrei, she’s got lots of Pop influences into her music since she went solo. ”Regenbogen” is her second solo album and was released in 2017, and it’s shockingly good! Some songs may be a little bit cheesy, and there are obviously still many Schlager influences, but when you’re open to this stuff and get into it, the whole album turns out to be a better Pop album than many of the big releases this year. The first half is definitely much stronger than the second, and ”Schönster Moment” is not only the album highlight, but even one of the best songs of 2017 overall. Other highlights are the three singles ”Regenbogen”, ”Nie wieder” & “”Und wenn ich träum”, with ”Wenn das wirklich Liebe ist” being another track worth a mention.

American musician ZZ Ward has released her second album ”The Storm” in 2017 as well, and while it’s already her second entry on the Billboard Top200 and even topped the US Blues Chart, ZZ Ward still remains heavily underrated. Looking gorgeous, the singer also has a very powerful voice, which you recognize immediately. Worth a check out are ”Help Me Mama”, ”Ghost”, ”The Storm”, ”Domino”, ”Bag Of Bones” and ”Ride”.

Now on to the third and fourth set, and these are both by Bebe Rexha. The singer has released the two EP’s ”All Your Fault, Pt. 1” and ”All Your Fault, Pt. 2”. While Bebe was no stranger when it comes to charts in 2017, both EP’s were still way too underrated and should have been hits, as they have lots of great tracks, even apart from the brilliant ”I Got You” from Part 1 or the hit ”Meant To Be” from Part 2. Part 1 has its very high with ”Small Doses”, which uses the great “First Light” by no other than Lindsey Stirling as a sample, while ”Atmosphere” as opening track already sets the bar high. The rollout for Part 2 was very unlucky, as the lead “The Way I Are” is definitely the weakest song there. Definitely worth a check out are the two highlights ”Comfortable” and ”(Not) The One”.

Pop lovers also should check out ”Think Before I Talk” by Norwegian Pop newcomer Astrid S and ”When We Do It” by Swiss musician Damian Lynn.
