Now that the less important portion of the list is done with,
let me welcome you to my 27th year-end chart!

Before moving on to the random-er than usual top 20, let me drop a song that has fallen in between years, but I consider as one of the best of the 10s, even though it sounds as if it was made in the 90s.

Don't you give up, nah, nah, nah
I won't give up, nah, nah, nah

20 DJ Snake ft. Justin Bieber - Let Me Love You

A slow burner that still hasn't run out of fuel.

I loved you so right,
but you loved me so wrong

19 DJ Sava feat. Irina Rimes - I Loved You

Another one of those Romanian summer hits that I can't get enough of.

I wanna know the hurt that hits
When you kiss her lips

18 Gryffin ft. Sinead Harnett - Love In Ruins

Gosh, this sounded like an instant favourite, it did take me a good while to get into though. Another FSC discovery!

They say only the good die young
That just ain't right
'Cause we're having too much fun
Too much fun tonight

17 Lana Del Rey ft. The Weeknd - Lust For Life

I must have listened to Lana's latest album 100 times and even though I found it impenetrable at first, I now appreciate it as a sultry nocturnal soundtrack. The fact that I've been watching the video for the title track so often lately makes this the highest Lana song on this chart.

Una veranda
piena di stelle
che brillano
girano
intorno a me

16 Rosario Borelli e i 5 Del Sud - Una Girandola di Stelle

Easily the rarest song on this list, I found this literally filthy single from 1960 in a box of very old, used 45s for sale in an antiques shop. Dunno what made me buy it, but it turned out it contained 2 lovely italian poppies, hardly inferior to other similar big hits at the time - the other one appearing much lower on this list.
Apparently the singer made a career as a cowboy hero in the movies after his music days were over.

We don't pray for love
We just pray for cars

15 The Weeknd ft. Daft Punk - Starboy

Oh how much higher this would have been, were it not the masturbatory self-referential nonsense that it is.

از وقتی دیدمت با همه بهم زدم
همون قدر عاشقی که حدسشو زدم

14 Shahram Shokoohi - Nafas Nafas

A guy from Iran used this as soundtrack to an Instagram story of his. I asked him what it was. It ended up here.

Your taste has definitely changed a bit, lots more mainstream stuff making it in, I would not have predicted you like the DJ snake tune.. I prefer the other of the JB songs listed.

Lust for Life is nice, Starboy is good too!

Pack your bags you say
Let's escape this drab town and find ourselves today

13 Versio ft. Nar - Feel It

Highly addictive melodic electropop about getting away. Even manages to cram in a little guitar solo. Copyright-free too.

Le temps fuit et sans retour
Emporte nos tendresses
Loin de cet heureux séjour
Le temps fuit sans retour

12 Gré Brouwenstijn & Lidy van der Veen - Belle Nuit, O Nuit D'amour

I was strolling around a flea market with a couple of friends one Sunday afternoon, when I saw a large box full of 45 records abandoned in a corner. I grabbed some of them at random and took them home. As I was trans-coding them to mp3s, the last minute or so of this record here was severely damaged, so I had to do a lot of editing to clear out tons of clicks and pops, as well as edit several parts together as the needle kept skipping the record grooves. Now, opera was never my cup of tea, but as I was doing all that editing and kept hearing the choir parts over and over again, this song suddenly revealed a beauty so immense that gave new meaning to the word "classical" to me.

Belle Nuit, O Nuit D'amour was written in 1880 by Jacques Offenbach for his fantasy opera Les contes d'Hoffmann. and was once considered one of the most famous melodies in the world. This rare interpretation comes from a renowned Dutch soprano, pictured in the first post, from somewhere around the late 1950s.

Lemme group the ones I know:

Awesome:
- Starboy (the lyrics are banal indeed, but the beat >>>)

Great:
- Shape of You
- Love
- Dusk Till Dawn

Good:
- Lust for Life (love the chorus!)
- Lean On
- Occidentali's Karma
- Friends
- Let Me Love You

11 Alien Alien - Sambaca

The concept is interesting, but it's a bit messy overall.
However, the song is really good.

I love the dance moves in that video, especially the fake sprain-my-ankle-cos-the-heels-too-high move  And Yes, that's the guy from my avatar!
