Yo soy masoquista
Con mi cuerpo un egoísta

10 Shakira feat. Maluma - Chantaje

Almost 2 decades after she hit it big, Shakira remains at the top of her game, releasing one hit after the other.
The intro riff (that appears several times throughout) is actually a very high-pitched vocal, which is IMO half the song's charm.
Sexy stuff.

For all those welcome tons of flowers
Who would have thought that you'd be so far
from home?
You know it's really hard to feel
When lovables may not be here
So every time you do, please don't. [!????]

09 The Away Days - World Horizon

Dream pop from Turkey, of all countries! Beautiful song that haunted me for many summer days.
The lyrics make no sense though - the ones circulating the net do not match what's being said IMO, perhaps a native might want to help?

E il nostro cuore al buio vuole esplodere
Vuole esplodere, vuole esplodere

08 Cesare Cremonini - Lost In The Weekend

I got my C1 in Italian this year, and yet I'm at a loss trying to understand what this song is really about.
Exciting combination of guitar and electronica in a song discovered in our FSC. Is this the highest FSC-related entry though?

"Chantaje" is decent. I expected more from the video, though.

Turn it up, it's your favorite song
Dance, dance, dance to the distortion
Turn it up, keep it on repeat
Stumblin' around like a wasted zombie

07 Katy Perry - Chained To The Rhythm

The most meta- hit of the year and by far Katy's best song for me.
That thumping bassline couldn't go wrong, but the lyrics took the song to a whole new level, well done.

Don't act like you know me
I am not your homie

06 Jax Jones feat. Raye - You Don't Know Me

I'm not entirely sure whether this is an honestly sassy lyric, or a song meant to resonate with the self-referential, horse-riding millenials. The truth is I've been singing this catchy tune very often in 2017! Clever use of the bassline, tho I never really cared for the original song.

And if you're under him
You ain't getting over him

05 Dua Lipa - New Rules

Dua Lipa hasn't convinced me of her talents yet, there's no denying this is a flawless pop song, accompanied by an amazing video, my 2nd favourite of the year - my #1 video is up next.

"Chained to the Rhythm" and "New Rules" are both great - among the highlights of 2017 pop music!

There's nobody like my mom
There's no place like my home since I was born
When I was young
The flavor is so strong
I've missed it so long now

04 The Blaze - Territory

Globalization and Islam. How do Islamic countries integrate into an ever changing world?
This is my reading of the video for Territory, a video with ultra strong imagery that conveys multiple messages.
Nothing short of a masterpiece.

I need my loneliness but I'm lost without you
I'm feeling so fearless
When you give me the proof, that my dream is so true
When you hold me I feel alive
When you hold me I'm alive
And I'm sure when I say
You're the best friend of my life

03 The Blaze - Virile

This was my entry point to The Blaze, an electronic duo from France, who, apart from making good music, shoot great videos as well.
Virile seemed to set a pattern for their first EP, released a few months ago: deep bass, pitched down vocals, English lyrics - this one's about male friendship.
Nothing else on the EP comes close to the brilliance of these 2 songs, but for a debut effort, it will have to suffice.

02 Allies for Everyone - Song for Peace of Mind

I don't know if feeling something breaking inside you counts as peace of mind, but that's what this song does to me.

:o
It certainly surprised me at the time, too. Pretty good album, too. Not since Robbie has a teen idol made as good a facsimile of retro rock.
The annoyance being that UK rock radio is ignoring him because of his background. :-? (though he has charted on one of the Billboard rock radio charts in America)
Yet if a pop act makes urban music or dance music they're embraced by that scene (most of the time).

Harry alone tried to redeem the charts in 2017, one of the few good UK #1 of this year.

Another surprise! I am personally not too keen on Harry's solo output but can see why you're such a fan.

A great section of pop from 7-5, cracking pics..

01 Harry Styles - Sign of the Times
Great countdown, love the presentation!
There are a lot more songs that i like/love than expected. I had no idea you were that much into "Lust For Life", but i'm glad to hear this, as it's one of my favorite albums of 2017. "Cherry" belongs to my faves too, so it's nice to see that one appear as album track.
"New Rules", "Chained To The Rhythm" and "Shape Of You" were big highlight of the year for me, while "Lean On" and "Let Me Love You" were big hits in the last years for me, so especially nice to see them here 8-)

I couldn't agree more on that "facsimile of retro rock" term. Sign of the Times is so old-fashioned in its composition - I mean, the melody is very simple, but you feel like it's actually going somewhere in the end, unlike many other chart hits these days.
It also feels like it's pushing all the right buttons to move you, everything being so perfectly placed to bring everything to a perfect crescendo, especially that vacuum sound  at 0:08 that appears several times up to its final placing at 5:11 - which pushes the song to an orgasmic, climactic end.
I didn't know who he was when I first heard the song, but it's a shame if he's being snubbed because of his past. Though that hardly comes as a surprise.
