Image 5 . Kelly Clarkson - Love So Soft (PEAK: # 1 for 6 Weeks )

It seems to be an inevitability whenever Kelly Clarkson releases new music, that it will shoot straight to the top of my chart and stay there. That is indeed true in this case as "Love So Soft" spent 6 weeks at #1 on my chart - longer than any other song last year! And due to that long run at #1, she finds herself all the way in the top 5 for the entire year! The switch in sound to a more classic soul-influenced track with a hand-clapping rhythm worked well for her here, and this joins in her classics from 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2015 in making the year-end top 10! It's true that Kelly has remained a core artist for much of her career, and she has shown no signs of slowing down yet - "Medicine" is already showing promise for 2018!

Image 4 . Lorde - Perfect Places (PEAK: # 1 for 2 Weeks )

Well, if there was an artist I certainly didn't expect to do as well as she did for me in 2017, it was Lorde! I felt her earlier stuff like "Royals" and "Team" was just ok but nothing really remarkable, but wow, did she ever blow me away with her second album "Melodrama"! This was the second single from the album, which showed her lyrical skills at her best and quickly gave her the first #1 of her career! Not only that, but due to a fair bit of longevity (25 weeks on the chart total), the points added up and she gets my #4 song of the year! Things definitely looked up for Lorde in 2017 and I hope she can continue with this high standard she has set for herself here!

Image 3 . Harry Styles - Sign Of The Times (PEAK: # 1 for 3 Weeks )

It was really a mixed bag for the One Direction soloists in 2017... some of them had big hits, others had songs that failed to chart entirely. After a few disappointments from the other members earlier in the year, Harry Styles was the one I had the most faith in to deliver... and not only did he deliver, he blew me away! His debut solo album was one of my favourites of the entire year, and the rock-leaning direction really suited him well. This lead single, a nearly six-minute epic reminiscent of 70's classic rock, became a fast hit for me and spent a total of three weeks at #1, becoming his biggest hit ever for me.

Image 2 . Kate Voegele - World Stops Spinning (PEAK: # 1 for 3 Weeks )

It is always inevitable that, whenever Kate Voegele has something out, she'll always end up very high on my year-end chart! And this is exactly what happened here! I actually first heard her perform this live back in 2014 when she was testing out new tracks; out of those performed, "Just Watch Me" ended up on her "Wild Card" EP, "Must Be Summertime" was released as a standalone single in 2016, while the other three all ended up on the "Canyonlands" album. This was one of the highlights of the album for me, an energetic upbeat track with a memorable piano intro and a catchy chorus, the kind of song I feel that Kate excels the most in. It was clear that I had to chart this, and it ended up as my second biggest hit of the year, spending 3 weeks at #1, 20 weeks in the top 10 and 26 weeks in the top 100! It doesn't quite match her four year-end #1's ("Only Fooling Myself" - 2008, "99 Times" - 2009, "Heart In Chains" - 2011 and "Must Be Summertime" - 2016), but it comes as close as she can get - and it was indeed a fairly close battle this year!

Image 1 . Carly Rae Jepsen - Cut To The Feeling (PEAK: # 1 for 4 Weeks )

So if Kate couldn't get my #1 of the year... who could?

Back in 2008, I first heard this singer who got her start on "Canadian Idol", and she got off to a slow start for me; the singles from her debut album "Tug Of War" peaked at the modest positions of #100, #89, and #67. But deep down inside, she had something special that would really take off on her second album "Kiss". Its lead single "Call Me Maybe" was a huge viral hit with an earworm of a pickup line, and despite only reaching #5 on my chart while it was a #1 hit on worldwide charts, it had incredible longevity, spending 34 weeks on my chart. The album would have a total of five top 10 hits on my chart, including her first #1 - "This Kiss", which would spend 29 weeks on total, and "Tonight I'm Getting Over You", which peaked at #2 but was my biggest non-#1 of 2013 in a 27-week chart run; it was my #7 song that year and spent more time in my top 10 that year than any other. And that summer, she had a second #1 - "Take A Picture", which topped my chart the week I got to see her in concert. (The only other artist who has been #1 the week I saw them in concert? Kate Voegele, of course, who did it twice in 2009, then again in 2015.)

Anyone else would have had their place in the history books already by this time... but things were only getting warmed up for Carly.

In 2015, she released the critically acclaimed cult classic album "Emotion", which netted three top 3 hits on my chart, including the massive #1 hit "Run Away With Me", showing a more mature but still catchy pop sound and spending 31 weeks on the chart total, and was my #5 song of the year (my highest ranked of 2015 not by ultimate core artists Kate Voegele or Kelly Clarkson!) This wasn't the end of it... she had a full EP of leftovers that she released as the side B, and two more tracks from that one made my top 10 as well!

However... this was not the end of things!

Yet another track from the sessions, "Cut To The Feeling", was released in 2017. Upon its release, it was an instant hit for me, spending a total of four weeks at #1, 19 weeks in the top 10 and 31 weeks in the top 100! In a year where very few songs had true longevity, Carly pulled off what we knew she could do all along - a bonafide hit - and indeed, she has her very first year-end #1 on my chart! It's been a long time coming, but Carly, you've deserved it! Congratulations on your #1 hit for the entire year 2017 - she is now the third Canadian artist to have this honour, following Nelly Furtado ("Turn Off The Light", 2001) and Avril Lavigne ("Complicated", 2002 and "When You're Gone", 2007)!
