and hugo, armie's voice is one of the most annoying things ever
The more I revisit my favourite scenes, the more I agree with that bolded bit. Oliver is barely bearable in most scenes. There are only a handful of scenes where I really enjoy his presence, and they involve less speaking and more...action.

I'm just sad we didn't get a happy ending. :(

And Elio's father conversation at the end, I didn't understand that he had a gay relationship in his youth as well (apparently that's what he meant). I thought he was talking about a girl and that he never loved Elio's mother quite like that.

I don't know, they had a great relationship, in and of itself, pretty idyllic considering the time period it takes place on. For him to confess something like that to his son... it feels too unbelievable.

Movies like this always leave me depressed for a couple of days.

I wish they would supply us with happy endings more often. The ending is too realistic compared to the almost utopian setting and course of events.

Elio's father definitely had a gay relationship in the past, he just didn't have the courage to take it to the next level/step.

Or he fell in love with another man but didn't have the courage to have a relationship with him.

They are thinking of a sequel though.

I thought the gay dad speech was a bit extra, I’d much prefer it if the movie ended after Elio parts with Oliver and his mother is driving him home. That car scene shouldve been the ending imo. It was powerful and had a more open ending + the movie would be just the right length.

After that it became a bit too long and, again, not a fan of the dad scene. The parents shouldve stayed clueless

Also, the "call me by your name and I'll call you by mine" scene was kind of out of place, did it have any meaning besides the pretty words?

Finally saw this - haven't been able to get anyone to see it with me.

I was so invested in it. Discussion is spoiler, which reveals plot elements.

Spoiler:
I wanted Elio and Oliver to have so much more time together. I know I wanted a happily ever after, but I don't think it would have been realistic anyway when you involve a 17 year old guy. I loved what his father said - to not harden oneself against pain so that you have nothing when you reach a certain age. And the final phone call when Elio is whispering his name to Oliver - all of those were such lovely touches. I loved how this movie was just about how this summer romance develops and comes to an end - that their relationship forms without judgement or without some sort of relationship protagonist like homophobia. To see a movie of this caliber just let a gay relationship BE was so very fulfilling.

I’m glad it didn’t have a happy ending. Sick of seeing gheys fall in love. When is it my turn?

My advice to people thinking of watching this is to go watch porn.

Im a bit disappointed with some people here not digging the 'dad' speech at the very end. For me and for my partner it was one of the main highlights of the movie. It should actually go viral on internet, so anyone can see it and make people relate more to the gay community.

Wonderful movie, my only criticism is the first hour (it takes one hour to get things going) and that cringey part where Elio 'plays' with an apple

You mean the peach scene? A big deal was made about the scene in the press, but, for me, it was just okay. I suppose it was more erotic in the novel.

Hm, I saw the movie yesterday and wasn't very impressed. Maybe my expectations were too high, because it's no way near a bad movie, but it was soo slow and dull and times. I was actually glad when it was over because it took way too long for me.
It was beautifully made though and there were some great parts, but overall it is very overrated.

I watched this Friday just gone after being pestered by my friend.

I was pretty blazee about it because I’d stopped watching ‘gay films’ a while back because they almost always depressed me.

Watching it, I liked it. After finishing it, I’m haunted/confused/enamoured by the damned thing.

It literally is ever gay man’s hopes and desires coupled with the loss of love and youth. Armie Hammer is just gorgeous. Elio, i can relate to as I’ve been through so many similar (albeit not as long) scenarios growing up. I’m just left saddened that it isn’t real and that it ended.

The thing that is most beautiful is that this was a time where we had to be secretive. No Grindr, No Drag Race. The absolute exhilaration when a man liked you too.

How do I get this movie out of my head?

Beautiful film to look at, you almost feel you're in that place as well, and most scenes seemed to be handled in a very... pretty? way, you could tell the director loved the story and wanted to treat it accordingly. Surprised at Armie's acting too, he could deliver. Tim's performance was amazing.

I love this director. He seems to know what he's doing all the time, while being quite unique at it as well. I just saw CMBYT and it felt so European in every way, I'm honestly surprised how it managed to get nominated fo Best Movie at the Oscars.
It's a film that revives feelings of bliss from the past and nostalgia. Very well made technically - notwithstanding the numerous continuity errors. I liked the acting too.
Now the story lacked tension, which is not necessarily bad, but if you replace the gay love story with a straight one, all you get is an all too heard before sugarcoated sexual-awakening love story. Because there was hardly any conflict at all. Neither with society, nor with the family. And yes, the father obviously had a gay affair once, probably too weak to let it fully blossom. The son will get over his seasonal crush and move on to new territories soon. Unless there will be a sequel. And unfortunately they're already planning to make one.

But it's a book. A single book.

Omg what a mess. We already have the BEFORE films.
