Mess at those spammers. Maybe you guys stop signing up new members for a while? Maybe they'll give up?

Doesn’t work - these bots are clever, they google search the answers to our security questions.

I’ll change the questions again later, currently removing all of the spam.

I have a brilliant idea..how about members who want to register instead of signing up by themselves and post immediately will have to wait 1-2 days for the Ukmkx administration team to check/verify their profiles before they can start posting? Like making sure their username doesn’t resemble that of a bot and In between that wait time the new user will answer a short survey just asking them what they want from ukmix or why they want to join :P you can even make them fill up (open answer) the survey during the pre-signup as a requirement to submit their request to signup to the forum 8-) I don’t think bots would take the time to answer complete sentences and pick good usernames

I was thinking that maybe newcomers could also email the administration team first expressing their interest I signing up and then having a secret link to a signup page but maybe that’s a little too advanced for ukmkx? or even the administration manually signing them up but that would be a lot of work plus a mess since it’s best for the user to pick his/her username and make sure it’s available etc

^ That option is possible, but manual verification takes a while when you're getting 50+ registrations per day - it would take an admin an average 2 mins + to make an informed judgement (checking email address, IP details) - some users are easier to spot, some aren't.

I'll change the registration questions - just need to make them a bit more difficult.

Nick's idea is good at the same time knowing of how smart these bots are I wonder if they can pick up on more "ordinary" usernames than the obvious ones they get?

That’s why the survey thing asking them to type answers would be like a second layer of security :) but who knows how smart they can get
