Photo uploader needed due to Photobucket block

Postby Graham76man » Fri Jul 14, 2017 12:08 pm

I am hoping the UKMIX team would reconsider the need for a photo uploading feature. Especially as one of the major websites for uploading pictures Photobucket has stopped Third Party linking unless you pay a large fee.
It so easy for the photo holding sites to change the rules. Turning forums into what amounts to unpaid adverts and dead links for the sites. I have seen several forums littered with dead links, turning most of the threads into irrelevant discussions that need to be deleted. Or at least heavily edited to get the picture links back.

Please please have your own photo uploader :)

But what happens when they do the same thing :wink: I didn't actually use that photo site, but I have seen three forums that relied on it and they are now a mess.
You just can't trust those sort of sites to keep photo's around for everyone to see. Not without paying for the privilege.

@Graham
Are you sure it is affecting UKMiX? (It is a problem on the big US message boards; that's true)
I have all pictures on Photobucket and the links are all still intact and the images are showing on this forum.
Anyhow, an upload function would be a great idea (mainly for the personal charts and charts analysis sections).

It really doesn't matter if it is only limited to the USA. The fact is that ANY of the image hosting sites can do this at any time. And my bet is when one does it they all follow.
There's no good site that you don't have control over. But if UKMIX had it's own uploader it wouldn't matter. Pictures would be under it's control.

For quick uploads I just use imgur, works great for me.

^^
All major photo hosting sites are blocking third party linking (unless you pay heavy $$$!)
Embedded Images on any site (like message boards, auction sites, Amazon, etc.) are no longer supported and replaced by a (probably temporary) warning message. (in some instances it shows a broken link)
See here

Smaller accounts are not yet fully affected but both Imgur and Photobucket have updated their terms of service.
Once it's going to be fully enforced UKMiX will look like a broken image link cemetery. See Graham's post above.

Yep this recently happened to my Photobucket account, I've switched to imgbb.com for the time being.

I think it was something like a cutoff at 500 or so third party links then you had to pay if you wanted the links to work after you exceed that amount but anyways.

@Affillate
What are your thoughts on imgbb.com?
There's no FAQ and the TOS is pretty scarce. There is no history on the web about this company and the few reviews found are all negative.

^^ Billy: Imgur does not allow it to be used as an image hoster. See: TOS

^^ I know. :wink: Photobucket still works for me, too. :D
Question is to find a hosting service that is reliable and affordable and that allows third party hosting...

Sorry late reply just came back to this thread

It's been great so far, I like how you can 'load' uploads and edit them/direct them to certain folders before pressing upload and voila its done, you can see the % progress of each picture and then after you can bring up a list of img tags in several formats (including BBCode). It's fairly easy to use from mobile too.

It photobucket you had to be in the folder you wanted to upload to, and sourcing links most of the time was an individual pic process IIRC.

I also used Photobucket. Annoying how you cannot use it anymore to link pictures to other sites.

So imgbb.com is the most used one now?

Have bought a Premium, non-commercial subscription to Photobucket.com.
Unlimited data transfer, 3rd-party hosting, up to 300,000 pictures (non-compressed sizes, and videos, gifs, etc.).
This is a new offer for private users at 99.99 USD/year (an amount that is reasonable and that I can handle).
The user interface is great, it's super fast now and gone are all the annoying click-baits and all the ads that made it a pain navigating on the free-tier.

^ Thanks for the information Trebor.

I still think 99.99 USD is still a bit too much for me (Esp since that's more in AUS dollars).

I don't think I'd pay more then 40$ year (AUS) for an image hosting site. I don't find the free-tier all that bad.
