The UKMIX username change amnesty [now closed]

Postby lars » Sun Feb 10, 2013 3:05 pm

This amnesty is now closed, see this post for a list of all the changes.

By popular request, and after some discussion with the moderators, we've decided to grant a brief "amnesty" for people wishing to change their username.

The concern with allowing unfettered username changes to one and all is the confusion it can cause, for regulars in general and moderators in particular. So, I'm going to allow a batch of changes as a "one-off", which will be handled by me (and/or the other administrators).

Here's how it works:

Send me a PM with your desired new username stating:
  • Your preferred choice (see guidelines below)
  • (optional) Any other usernames you'd be happy with, in order of preference
  • The reason why you want the change
I'll probably make the changes in the next 1-2 weeks, so best to get your request in sooner rather than later.

Username guidelines

The new username won't be accepted if:
  • You have been a member of UKMIX for less than 6 months
  • You are not currently active (fewer than 10 posts in the month leading up to the date of this post)
  • It contains bad language or is obviously unsuitable
  • It isn't a valid username: letters, numbers or the _. No spaces or other characters.
  • The new username refers to any well known artist or work
To clarify that last point; there's no problem on UKMIX with having an artist-related username. However, I don't want to be bombarded with requests to pay homage to people's current favourites. You can change from an artist/work related username, just not to one.

The purpose of username changes is to allow someone to change their name if they perhaps didn't choose too carefully at first, and then ended up becoming a regular on UKMIX.

I reserve the right to refuse any choice, but if you follow the above guidelines I'm not going to be too picky.

What will happen

To save time, I might not reply to all PMs straight away, or will give a very terse response like 'ok' (sorry!)

If demand is high, then I'll give priority to people who have contributed the most to this site, for example people who have:
  • Helped with running the site (e.g. moderators)
  • Been posting regularly for a long time (more consistency than absolute post count), especially high quality information
  • Mostly avoided warnings/bans
  • Contributed reviews
  • Given useful feedback on the redesign (positive or negative is fine)
  • Donated towards the running costs
I'll probably use the above list if two or more people want the same name (probably not that likely though).

If I agree to change your username, then I'll send you a PM to let you know. Later on, I will make the change for you and you'll need to log in with the new name from then on. If you have trouble logging in, try both usernames (old and new).

Your profile page will display the old username (probably either for a year or permanently, not sure yet).

Your posts will show the old username alongside the new one for 3 months.

"What if I miss this chance?"

I'll probably do the same thing again at some point in the future, but no guarantee...

I kinda dislike my username, but changing it would be such a tough decision. I'd eventually change it to Serby, but I doubt I'll ever do it...

I think it wouldn't be THAT confusing, cuz first 3 months you'll see both old and new username, which is enough time to remember them I think.

For me, I signed up in 2006, whilst at high school - I signed up with 04 because it was my first year of high school.

And people just call me Wayne on here anyway, so I would like to lose the '04'.

The last point basically means no stan usernames!

I can't go from 'biscuits' to 'JanetJacksonStan4Lyf' or anything in that vein.

I don't like my user name and most people call me Eamon here anyway so I wouldn't mind just changing it to that.

Also, I think all the usernames that existed once should be forbidden for new users in future, just to avoid confusion.

One more question: lars, if you change a username, will previous text be replaced? For example, not only my username on the left of my post, but also my username in quotes and in plain text? That would be neat.

I am tempted to change my username, especially as it was based on a band I loved at the time when I signed up, but have since found to be a bit inconsistent... but after nearly 9 years on the site, I am reluctant to change for that reason alone!

The only username I'd want to change to is ManInThisTown, buh, the last guy has ruined it for me.

I've had six requests so far, so not expecting a huge identity crisis meltdown!

I'll make a few changes later in the week, but leave the amnesty 'open' for a couple of weeks.

YES!

Lars, this might sound foolish - but will the name change automatically sign me out? And will I then have to sign in with my new details if so?
