This may have been the time they stayed number one for so long, they were replaced by their next single.

Indeed. Would also be interesting to see the 29th March 1980 Countdown, and maybe even hear Fluff's XFM show ...!

"Too Much Heaven" came on RTE Radio 1's overnight Gold service last night (I'm in the UK fwiw); that seems to be the closest actual Bee Gees song to "Meaningless Songs in Very High Voices".

Interesting that "Lately" was in as an album track, months before it was released as a single (and even then, it would take Jodeci in 1993 to make it into a major American hit) - his next single after this would be "I Ain't Gonna Stand for It".

Bump to put this back on the front page.

(Still hoping some more of the RB London sales charts will appear, but you're basically relying on offairs because, unlike the R&RN ones, they didn't appear in print)

Thanks for posting. Strange to see 'Guitar Man' by Elvis dominating the countdown. I know it was released as a single at the time but with a peak of only 43 in the national chart I wouldn't have thought it would have done as well as it's doing here on the countdown. I can only assume all the the-then ex Ace Cafe (now back open!) patrons were voting for it in force!

Remember how long "Way Down" stayed in the Hitline? Clearly, there was an organised fan vote going on (no doubt at least partially from those who understood where the music came from so little that they saw nothing wrong with *that* Matchbox Confederate flag ...)

Possibly "Shaddap You Face" might have done better, considering its sales success, on a similar phone poll organised by the more provincial ILRs? That's only a wild guess, mind ...

Ah, that's what I must have been thinking of when I remembered the Police replaced themselves at number one, with the previous song dropping out - I was thinking of Adam and the Ants...

So the actual follow up to This Ole House was beaten on each chart by an old Sunsets track......
