What was the solo re-recording of "Roxanne" featured here?

Has anyone else previously had the Top 2, as Haircut 100 did on 17th March?

"A live solo version performed by Sting from the 1982 album The Secret Policeman's Other Ball received moderate airplay on album-oriented rock radio and reached number 28 on the Billboard Top Tracks chart."

Thanks #toobloodylazytocheckwikipedia

(and maybe I just don't like the song enough)

Can we assume that "Ever So Lonely" (which doesn't get enough love even among the most loyal early-82 pop freaks, and I fear I know the reasons) took off in London first? It was thriving in the Hitline before it had made the official Top 75.

Interesting that "Ring Ring" (which was a reissued old single on a different label I think?) made the Hitline but "Give Me Back My Heart" didn't.

This is the first time I can remember that they still had Hitlines on Bank Holidays. Manilow's fans must have been *really* dedicated and obsessive to keep voting him top, week after week after week ... shows the fallability of this system compared to a sales chart. (I know that is the case some people, especially here, make against streaming in charts, but criticising Manilow has no racist or classist elements attached to it, unlike a lot of the anti-streaming arguments.)

Sadly I don't have any more from 1982. I can't remember if I stopped noting them down or have just lost them over the years, However, the good news is that I do have Hitlines from October, 1983 to August, 1984 (the last ones I have). These will be posted here soon...

Was there even a QPR single in 1982? I can find several songs related to that club on Discogs (indeed, a whole album of them) but nothing specifically identified with that year.

A swift turnover at the top but, of course, the Cliff fans were soon in action again.

Some clearly organised fanbase voting for old acts here - you can sort of see why Capital felt the need to relaunch itself in the autumn of 1984 taking some influence from the London pirates covered on BBC Four last Friday (and indeed why those unlicensed stations were doing so well).

There was an all-oldies station from Twickenham called Radio Sovereign which was taking a large percentage of Capital's listeners and must have influenced them into starting Capital Gold. There was also Radio Jackie which was operating a very professional all-day service. I must watch that BBC documentary.

1984 was also the year when all the commercial staion bosses held a meeting at Heathrow wherer they decided to lobby the IBA to remove a lot of their restrictions and obligations.

I quite enjoyed watching the programme about the pirates although there were a few factual errors. I found it strange that the owner of LWR gave the impression that he took the station off-air in September 1985 until the middle of 1986 in order to try and obtain a legitimate license to broadcast as not only can I remember listening to LWR at the end of 1985 but I have a recording of the station I made on Good Friday in 1986, which would be Friday 28 March 1986.

The clip of the pirate station being raided was from a Channel 4 programme which aired in 1987. The station was JBC which was based at the back of a TV repair shop in Willesden NW10. At the time of the raid (January 1987) it was my favourite radio station. I was living in Greenford at the time so could pick up the station loud and clear (and again I have some recordings of the station). Sadly at this point LWR had gone off air, having been raided once too many times. I think it was off-air for something like 3 or 4 months while the station did some fund raising to buy new equipment and records.

The JBC raid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPmtlGPZnTU

Everyone knew where the station was broadcasting from, they made no secret of it, even going so far as to give out both their address and telephone number. I was working in the NW10 area at the time, when we were doing overtime on a Saturday we used to listen in and phone in a request or two! Even the local police knew about the station and it was rumoured they too were fans of the station. I suppose the DTI had to be seen doing their job and had to raid them at some point. If I recall the station was back on air a few days later and was again broadcasting from the TV repair shop!

As Robbie's post made clear, this was about the soul/reggae/early hip-hop pirates, whose influence seeped through into shows such as Mike Allen's after he moved away from his mainstream daytime show - but there was also Laser 558, a return to offshore radio, picking up the audience for Top 40 music.

The thing about the whole culture that surrounded the soul pirates is that their owners were often every bit as supportive of the right-wing politics and economics which had now reached critical mass as the 1960s offshore stations' owners had been during their wilderness years - white liberals at the NME who wrote otherwise positive articles about, say, Jazzie B or Morgan Khan were routinely horrified at their anti-welfare state sentiments - but were not accepted by the gatekeepers of those politics as their predecessors had been, and we all know the reasons for that. Now, as we know from the election, the equivalent culture knows better (not least because there was still a whiff of Third Programmery coming from Labour in the 1980s, and despite the hype about the second coming of Attlee, there is really no more of that in the current Labour Party than there was under Blair ... no doubt if there had been we'd have had the result everyone expected).

Interesting stuff - I'd forgotten about Laser ("you're never more than a minute away from music") which judging from the fact everyone I knew in mid-1984 seemed to have at least tried it, must have had a huge audience.
