The "Europarade" - 2014 to ????

From the end of May 1976 until the beginning of January 1994, chart success around western Europe was measured by the Europarade - "The Chart Of The Charts"! Compiled in the earlier years by TROS-Radio, and in the later ones by SR-1, it was broadcast on these and other radio stations around Europe, and published (occasionally) in various magazines. In 2008 (with very much appreciated help and contributions from others!) a team of three forum members - cavefan, CZB and francisplaiy - posted here very nearly the whole of those 917 weekly charts (and several year-end charts too) - primarily from the notes we had made while listening to those chart shows way back then. These can be found in the following six threads. each of which covers a three-year period.

1976 to 1979 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52561

1980 to 1982 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52562

1983 to 1985 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52563

1986 to 1988 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52564

1989 to 1991 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52565

1992 to 1994 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52566

More details of the compilation method can be found on those threads. However, for the majority of the period the chart was a top forty, based on the top fifteen positions of each of eleven national charts - Austria (A), Belgium (B), Switzerland (CH), Germany (D), Denmark (DK), Spain (E), France (F), the United Kingdom (GB), Italy (I), Ireland (IRL) and the Netherlands (NL). The charts were weighted equally on a points system, with each number one receiving 15 points, each number 2 receiving 14 points - and so on, down to each number 15 receiving one point. The total points scored, up to a maximum of 165, determined the Europarade positions - with records scoring the same points total ranked alphabetically by title. (This happened only rarely at the top end of the chart - but frequently at the bottom end, especially when hits had 15 / 14 / 13 points by scoring in the top three in one country, without charting anywhere else at all!)

So it all came to an end at the beginning of 1994 - and various other ways of compiling pan-European charts have been used since then. However, we all wondered how the Europarade would have progressed, if it had continued to be compiled in exactly the same way as previously - and remained convinced that such an approach would have continued to be as good a measure of chart success across the continent as it always was !

In 2009, we began a new series of threads, continuing from the beginning of 1994 - setting out for each week the "Europarade" that would have been compiled in the years since then, if the same rules had continued to be applied. While francisplaiy began from the point at which the radio-broadcasted Europarades had ended, CZB concentrated on the noughties - both using the weekly national charts that can be found around the internet and in our own archives. It was a lengthy project - as this time we were doing all the work, not just transcribing the completed charts from our notes and other sources ! However, there came a point when every elapsed week was completed, and it only remained for a new "Europarade" to be compiled and posted each Friday, just as soon as all of the current week's eleven component charts became available and could be processed.

Here are the threads covering the past twenty years:

1994 to 1998 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=60376

1999 to 2003 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=65344

2004 to 2008 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=61099

2009 to 2013 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=64107

And this new thread now continues from the beginning of 2014. Comments on the current Europarades are very welcome - as is any additional information or corrections relating to the earlier ones, especially regarding the few elements that still remain a mystery. So now, let's see what's impressing the music buyers of Western Europe in this opening week of the new year . . . . .

Although there have been new charts compiled and published for every country except Switzerland since this time last week, there is only one new entry in this first Europarade of the new year. It's a new Spanish hit for Dani Martin, sneaking in at 39 - but there are seven higher re-entries, including one from Mariah Carey that has reappeared several times since first entering in December 1994 ! Meanwhile, Jason Derulo has the biggest mover with "Trumpets" . . . . . Passenger is still around for a fifty-fifth week with "Let Her Go" . . . . . Martin Garrix is back up into the top ten with "Animals" . . . . . and in an unchanged top three, it's a third week at the top for Avicii, and "Hey Brother".

CZB, what do you do, if a chart is "frozen"? (no new issue is released - mostly happening in December or January).
Do you still count the country to a chart with the "old data" or you simply omit it from the chart for the "frozen" week? I think Norway had some "frozen" chart weeks in 80s...

Never ! ! ! All eleven countries always stay in, with the most recent chart used again. That's what used to happen in the radio years with TROS and SR-1 - when more countries used to have a week with no new chart compiled than is the case nowadays.

For a few years now, I think the only countries which have routinely compiled no new chart for a week between Christmas and New Year have been Austria and Switzerland . . . . .

The entire top fifteen from Switzerland very nearly make it into the Europarade this week - only their current number ten, "Bonfire Heart" by James Blunt is missing. . Also at number thirteen in Germany, it has a total of nine points - and drops out into 41st place ! That helps to make room for three re-entries and four brand new hits, the highest of which is a debut for Helene Fischer - while the biggest climber is the former number one from Avicii, "Wake Me Up". This races right back up into the top ten, into which Faul and Wad Ad vs Pnau also ascend for the first time. And last week's top three are all scoring everywhere - but one of them slips down, allowing Pharrell Williams up there yet again, this time with "Happy" which has so far charted in eight countries out of eleven. But could that be enough for him to replace "Hey Brother" at number one . . . . . ?

Austria makes the biggest impact on the Europarade this week, with the current number eleven there, "Hero" by Family Of The Year, being the only top fifteen absentee. "Demons" is doing well in Austria for Imagine Dragons, and is also scoring in Germany - which makes it the only one of the five new entries charting in more than one country. The highest debut goes to Denmark's new number one from L.O.C., while the highest climber is Lady GaGa's latest collaboration, rebounding seventeen places. Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran is in the top ten for the first time ever, and no fewer than four hits are in the top fifteen everywhere. "The Monster" remains in fourth position, with eighty points - but it's a very close battle between "Happy", "Hey Brother" and "Timber". Do we have a new number one . . . . . ?

There are six new entries in the Europarade this week - but five of them only score in one country. These include debuts for London-born Elyar Fox, who is currently having his first success in the UK chart, and Nottingham trio London Grammar, who never reached the top fifteen in their homeland but are now big in Belgium with "Strong". Meanwhile, former chart-toppers Shakira and Rihanna have joined forces, so it is no surprise that "Can't Remember To Forget You" crashes straight into the top ten - while from Germany Adel Tawil moves back up there with "Lieder", and "Atemlos Durch Die Wind" isn't far behind him, inside the top twenty for the first time for Helene Fischer. However, in his sixteenth week, but only his second at number one as a solo artist, Pharrell Williams is now well ahead of the other two hits currently charting in all eleven countries - indeed, he has one of the highest-scoring Europarade successes ever, Number four in Spain, number three in Italy, number two in Austria and the Netherlands, and number one everywhere else, "Happy" has 158 points, just seven short of a maximum !

30 years ago today at this very hour SR 1 aired their first Europarade (#401 since the very first in 1976). For 10 years Wilfried Eckel counted down the 30, then soon 40 hottest hits in Western Europe.

Thanks again to Wilfried for that great chart show.

This week, all of the Austrian top fifteen are in the Europarade - including three out of nine new entries. Flo Rida sneaks in at number 40 with "How I Feel" - but the rest of the continent seem to feel anything about it yet ! - while Marteria debut inside the top twenty thanks to being at number eight in Germany as well as Austria, And Switzerland joins these countries in having Lily Allen as a high new entry, so "Hard Out Here" crashes straight in to Western Europe's top ten. Meanwhile, after seven and nine weeks respectively, Jason Derulo and John Legend also climb into the top ten with "Trumpets" and "All Of Me"- and after fifty-nine weeks, Passenger might not be letting go of a Europarade position just yet. And there is no change to the top three, with Pharrell Williams still collecting an impressive 157 points out of a possible 165. Number one in five countries, number two in four others and number three in the final two, it's an easy third week in pole position for "Happy".

The Swiss chart has the greatest share of this week's Europarade, with the top fourteen from that country all present and only the number 15, "Papaoutai" by Stromae, missing. But he's still around with "Formidable" after an impressive thirty-three weeks - a total only currently beaten by Passenger, moving up yet again and still scoring in both Italy and Spain with "Let Her Go" in its sixtieth appearance. Meanwhile, there are six brand new entries, and the one with the most widespread success is by Beyonce featuring Jay-Z, already charting in Belgium, Denmark, France and the UK - but "Drunk In Love" is far from being the highest new arrival. That's a collaboration involving twice as many acts ! And the top three remain the same for a fourth consecutive week, with Pharrell Williams still in the top three almost everywhere with "Happy". He has the same total score as last time - 157 points, giving him a 52-points lead over his closest challenger . . . . .

The whole of the Swiss top fifteen appear again in this week's Europarade - and their highest new entry, Lennon and Maisy with "Love", is among eight new debuts, several of which involve acts who have had many previous major successes ! Those include Katy Perry, whose latest hit "Dark Horse" gallops straight into the top ten. Meanwhile, the biggest mover is "Can't Remember To Forget You", as Shakira and Rihanna race right up into the top five, with 56 points. However, with exactly one hundred points more than that, it's a very easy fifth week at number one for Pharrell Williams - as "Happy" falls to number five in the Netherlands, but is either at number one or number two everywhere else . . . . .

Eleven tracks drop out of the Europarade this week - including two than only arrived last week ! These make room for four re-entries, including one of already the longest-running hits for Stromae, and seven brand new arrivals. Some of those, such as Denmark's Bo Evers and Switzerland's Anna Rossinelli. seem unlikely to gain popularity beyond their homelands - but someone who has considerably widespread success, and certainly not for the first time, is David Guetta. His latest collaboration, with Skylar Grey, shoots straight into the top ten. Meanwhile Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" jumps up four places into the top five, the joint highest climber (!) - but once again Pharrell Williams is scoring strongly everywhere with "Happy". Just ten points short of a maximum 165 points, that spends a sixth week as Western Europe's number one.

This week's Europarade, including the whole of the current top fifteen from Switzerland, has just four brand new entries - but also seven re-entries ! The highest of each are side by side. Milky Chance, having previously scored in the German-speaking countries only, are now beginning to steal their way up the charts of Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands - while the new number one in the UK gives Sam Smith his first solo hit. He's also in the top five in Ireland - and the previous UK number one has now reached pole position there for Clean Bandit. Rising up three other charts too, they have the biggest climber in the Europarade, racing up seven places to number four. However, Pharrell Williams is still charting everywhere, and has almost twice as many points as his closest challenger - so "Happy" spends a seventh week as Western Europe's number one.

This week, Passenger is down and out, in 45th place with "Let Her Go" - and looks unlikely to return. However, with a total of sixty-three appearances, this has become the third longest lasting Europarade hit ever ! One Republic now have the oldest song in the chart, as "Counting Stars" reaches a thirty-sixth week - although this could also be its last. David Guetta and Skylar Grey dive even more places this time with "Shot Me Down", however - while Indila has the biggest climber with "Derniere Danse". She's now just above the highest of nine brand new entries - "Red Lights" by Tiesto. Meanwhile, Switzerland have the greatest share this week, with their own Anna Rossinelli having the only absent track from the top fifteen - and it's one of six countries in which Pharrell Williams is still at number one. Top three everywhere else except the Netherlands, it's another easy week - its eighth - as Western Europe's most successful hit for "Happy".

This week, Nico and Vinz have the highest climber with "Am I Wrong", which advances seven places into the top half of the Europarade. Two out of seven brand new entries are also there - one of which is by Lily Allen, who enjoys at least a brief burst of further success in the UK and Ireland with "Air Balloon". The new release from Coldplay only came in at number 20 in the Irish chart last week, so it doesn't score any points there - but "Magic" makes a stronger debut in six other countries, crashing straight into the Europarade top five. And Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne are now charting everywhere with "Rather Be". They are still at number one in the Netherlands, and have a total of 111 points. That would often be enough to be Western Europe's number one - but not when Pharrell Williams remains either at number one or number two in the other ten countries ! With a forty-one points lead, it's another week in pole position for "Happy".

Whoops !

I have just discovered that the current hit by NICO AND VINZ, "AM I WRONG", was in the Europarade for ten weeks last year - although the performers were then calling themselves ENVY. It's exactly the same track, merely credited differently - so I have amended its weeks totals in the two most recently-posted charts, and reclassified it as a re-entry in the earlier one.

Apologies for not spotting this sooner . . . . .

There are five new entries this week - and, while the new hits for Enrique Iglesias featuring Pitbull and Kylie Minogue are both scoring in the UK and Ireland, the others can rely only on success in their Belgian, Danish and Spanish homelands for 2 Fabiola featuring Loredana, Hedegaard and David Bisbal repectively. Meanwhile, Cris Cab featuring Pharrell Williams have the biggest climber, Milky Chance return to the top ten, and scoring 126 points by charting in all eleven countries still leaves Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne in the runner-up spot - as "Happy" remains in the top three everywhere except the Netherlands, and is twenty-one points ahead as it reaches a tenth week as Western Europe's favourite . . . . .

This week, David Guetta featuring Skylar Grey achieve the unusual feat of sneaking back into the Europarade with a single that is no higher than number thirteen anywhere in Western Europe at the moment - while a sudden rise to number two in Belgium is the main reason that A Great Big World featuring Christina Aguilera is the biggest mover, earning a new peak inside the top fifteen. Also there is the highest of seven new entries, as Duke Dumont featuring Jax Jones crash into both the UK and Irish charts at number one - while the Dutch number one is still scoring everywhere else too for Clean Bandit featuring Jess Glynne. However, it remains stuck in the runner-up spot in the Europarade for a third week, as Pharrell Williams stays at number eleven in the Netherlands and in the top five of the other ten countries. A nineteen-points lead keeps "Happy" in pole position for an eleventh week.

A quarter of last week's hits depart, making room for eight new entries and two re-entries - and Hozier have one of each, as two of their tracks are now in the top ten in Ireland. Meanwhile, the highest Europarade debut is for the song that enters the Irish and UK charts at number one, and which is also scoring in Spain, for Five Seconds Of Summer. A seven-place climb is enough to make the Chainsmokers the most rapid riser of the week - but Western Europe's top three are now all charting everywhere. Clean Bandit remain in the runner-up spot, twenty-four points ahead of Katy Perry but twelve points behind Pharrell Williams, who stays at number one for a twelfth consecutive week with "Happy".

The presence of the current top fourteen in Ireland gives that country the biggest share of this week's Europarade - and the only two out of ten brand new entries scoring in as many as three charts are both hits there, for Aloe Blacc and Vance Joy. But which of these two makes the highest debut, just missing the top ten ? Meanwhile, OneRepublic have one of just two re-entries with "Counting Stars", now making an impressive fortieth appearance - and the second longest laster is the track that has just become the most successful chart hit in almost fifty years of the Dutch top forty, for Pharrell Williams. However, after spending twelve weeks at number one in the Europarade, "Happy" is down to number twelve in the Netherlands, while the track that has spent the last four weeks in the runner-up spot is no lower than number eight anywhere. Just three points separate the top two - so which way round are they . . . . . ?

There are six new entries in the Europarade this week - and three are scoring in more than one country, for the Vamps (the UK and Ireland), David Guetta (Denmark and France} and Calvin Harris (Belgium and the Netherlands). Re-entries come from two other acts charting elsewhere than their homelands - Stromae is now big in Italy, and Birdy flies back into the top five in Spain - while Enrique Iglesias, together with full supporting cast, has the biggest mover of the week. Meanwhile, Vance Joy rises into the top twenty and John Legend returns to the top ten - but, still one of three tracks scoring everywhere, "Rather Be" by Clean Bandit can't hold on to the number one spot for a second week. They have handed it straight back to the track that is already the longest running hit in the current Europarade - "Happy" by Pharrell Williams !

There are four new entries in the Europarade this week - and 25-year-old Canadian Kiesza, 26-year-old Swede Tove Lo and 20-year-old Londoner Lewis Shay Jankel ("Shift K3Y") are all there purely as a result of their current successes in the UK. Bizarrely, between them they can't even match the age of the performer of the other new arrival, 79-year-old sports commentator and broadcaster Jimmy Magee - whose charity single is currently selling more than almost all its rivals in Ireland, where he has been a familiar voice on radio and television for a very long time ! Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran moves back into the top ten with one of fourteen tracks appearing from the top fifteen of Switzerland, the country with the greatest share of the Europarade this week - and Calvin Harris has the biggest climber, up nineteen at nineteen with "Summer". But two tracks together collect more than a fifth of all the points available, as they both continue to chart strongly everywhere. Is it a second week at the top for "Rather Be", or a fourteenth week there for "Happy" ?

There are seven new entries in the Europarade this week - but six of them are scoring in one country only, and it remains to be seen whether the success of any of them travels any further afield. For most, their chances are probably close to zero ! However, Coldplay have another hit charting in four countries already, as "Midnight" crashes straight into the top ten. George Ezra has made somewhat slower progress, as he finally gets there in his tenth appearance with "Budapest" - although John Legend needed twenty weeks to rise to number nine with "All Of Me", and after dipping two places to number eleven last week he returns to his previous peak. But the longest-running Europarade hit has been around for thirty weeks - and, now the only track charting everywhere, spends a fifteenth week at the top, still with a comfortable thirteen points lead over its closest challenger. "Happy" by Pharrell Williams could be on the way to breaking a few all-time records !

Switzerland may be unlikely to win the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest - but all of their current top fifteen appear in this week's Europarade, none of them lower than number 28. Some of this year's songs have already been and gone, but in the week of the contest just one is among five new entries - and it's the Spanish representative, by Ruth Lorenzo. Other debuts come from Andreas Bourani and Ariana Grande - although the latter is accompanied by Iggy Azalea, who makes a second Europarade appearance just three weeks after her first ! Meanwhile, with help from Justin Timberlake, Michael Jackson is back after a long absence, mainly caused by his death. And Coldplay replace one top ten hit with another, crashing in with "A Sky Full Of Stars" - but this week's main congratulations must go to Pharrell Williams, whose greatest success continues to score in all eleven countries, but also makes another impressive achievement. In very nearly thirty-eight years, 434 different tracks have topped the Europarade - and "Happy" now becomes only the fourth one that has done so for sixteen weeks, joining "Rhythm Is A Dancer" by Snap, "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You" by Bryan Adams and "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion as the longest-lasting number ones ever. ( But can he beat them all by staying there again next week . . . . . ? )
