Meghan Trainor wins battle of the booty as Nicki Minaj finishes Top 3

By Rob Copsey
Meghan Trainor has claimed a second week at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart with All About That Bass.

The track was locked in a chart battle of the butts earlier this week with Nicki Minaj’s booty-shaking Anaconda, but has since stormed ahead to shift another 100,000 copies this week.

Meanwhile, Anaconda is this week’s highest new entry at Number 3, behind her Jessie J and Ariana Grande collaboration Bang Bang at Number 2. Anaconda - which samples Sir Mix-a-Lot’s Baby Got Back - serves as the latest single from her forthcoming album The Pink Print, which is due out later this year.

Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off is at Number 4 and claims this week’s most streamed track with over 1.4 million streams, and Jeremih debuts at Number 5 with Don’t Tell ‘Em. The song, which features YG, marks the US R&B singer’s biggest UK hit to date after 2009’s Birthday Sex peaked at 15.

New entries

Ella Henderson lands at Number 7 on today’s tally with Glow. The song follows her chart-topping debut Ghost, which Official Charts recently revealed was the most-downloaded song this summer. Ella’s album, Chapter One, is released next week.
Ella Henderson's Chapter One: The singer opens up about her favourite songs on her debut album

Dance trio Luvbug, which is fronted by former JLS star Marvin Humes, enter at Number 13 with Resonance, and Usher’s She Came To Give It To You is new at 16. The Nicki Minaj-assisted track marks his 27th Top 40 single as a lead or featured artist.

Finally, a cover of The Beach Boys’ classic God Only Knows – which features 26 global musicians including Sir Elton John, One Direction, and Kylie Minogue – enters the chart at Number 20 after only four days on sale. The song was unveiled earlier this week alongside a stunning music video to coincide with the launch of BBC Music, with proceeds from the song going to Children In Need.

BBC Music’s God Only Knows enters the Top 20 after four days on sale

Star-studded Children In Need single enters Top 20 after four days on sale.

A cover of The Beach Boys’ classic God Only Knows performed by 26 global musicians has entered the Top 20 on the Official Singles Chart after just four days on sale.

The track, which was unveiled earlier this week alongside a stunning music video, makes its debut on today’s singles chart at Number 20 less than a week after going on sale.

26 global musicians, including Sir Elton John, One Direction, Kylie Minogue and Stevie Wonder, joined forces on the cover for the launch BBC Music. Proceeds from sales of the song go towards Children In Need.

God Only Knows originally hit Number 2 on the UK Top 40 when it was released in 1966 as part of a double A-side single with Wouldn't It Be Nice. The track features on The Beach Boys’ 11th studio album Pet Sounds.

“All of the artists did such a beautiful job I can’t thank them enough,” Brian Wilson said of the rendition, adding: “God Only Knows is a very special song. An extremely spiritual song and one of the best I’ve ever written.”

The accompanying music video was directed by Francois Rousselet (Iggy Azalea, Kanye West, Madonna) and shows shows the iconic Alexandra Palace Theatre brought to life by a magical performance of the track.

The release harks back to the star-studded cover of Lou Reed’s Perfect Day in 1997, which was also released by BBC Music in aid of Children In Need. Featuring the likes of U2’s Bono, David Bowie and Elton John, the track hit Number 1 for three non-consecutive weeks and is one of 153 songs in UK chart history to sell over one million copies.

Hozier has claimed the highest new entry on this week's Official Albums Chart.

The 24-year-old Irish musician – real name Andrew Hozier-Byrne – lands at Number 5 with his self-titled debut.

The record includes the hit single Take Me To Church, which last month climbed into the UK Top 40 seven weeks after its release and has so far peaked at Number 26 on the Official Singles Chart.

Meanwhile, George Ezra wins a second week at Number 1 with Wanted On Voyage. The 21-year-old’s folk-rock debut topped the chart last week after 14 weeks inside the Top 10.

Ed Sheeran’s X climbs a place to Number 2 this week, Sam Smith spends at 20th week in the Top 10 with In The Lonely Hour (Number 3), and Barbra Streisand’s Partners is at 4.

New entries

In addition to Hozier, there are a massive 13 new entries on this week’s album chart. Canadian musician Caribou aka Dan Snaith claims his highest-charting UK album to date with Our Love at Number 8, Johnny Marr’s second solo album Playland enters at 9, and UK electro-house duo Gorgon City land at Number 10 with their debut LP Sirens.
Gorgon City interview: "Electro death metal? Why not?!"

Bryan Adams’ 11th studio album and first in six years Tracks Of My Years is at Number 11, and country trio Lady Antebellum enter at 12 with their fifth studio album 747.

Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks scores her seventh Top 40 solo album this week with 24 Karat: Songs From The Vault (14), UK alt-rockers Lower Than Atlantis land at 16 with their self-titled LP, and former UB40 frontman Ali Campbell gains his fifth Top 20 album with Silhouette (18).

Elsewhere, Jamie Cullum’s seventh album Interlude (19), Flying Lotus’ You’re Dead (24), Foster & Allen’s Gold & Silver Days (28), Jackson Browne’s Standing In The Breach (31) and Weezer’s Everything Will Be Alright In The End (37) all earn a place inside the Top 40 this week.

I wonder if the OCC are excluding the X-Factor performance records from the charts?
Education for anyone aged 12 to 16 has made a mess of the world!

They wouldn't have made much impression anyway in only a few hours. Only on the sales 100 as streaming would keep them lower (look at Sheridan Smith at 49 on sales - she was in the high 20's on iTunes at the start of the week - but 80 on the main chart). We'll see when we get top 200 info later in the week - and obviously Tuesday's first midweek. Would be very odd if OCC have been told to block them as they are being kept on the iTunes charts for the first time ever, including an album of all the tracks for the first time, too. OCC may also be under the impression that they have to omit them - ITV might not have given them the memo.

From HAVEN:
Singles

Her sales are off 29.78% week-on-week at 100,942 (including 14,378 streaming sales) but Meghan Trainor's All About That Bass remains at number one, while Jessie J's Bang Bang collaboration with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj continues at number two, with its sales down just 3.59% week-on-week at 55,595.

Ahead on initial sales flashes, Minaj's latest solo single Anaconda would have delivered her second number one in three weeks, following Bang Bang - but if faded considerably, ending up debuting at number three on sales of 54,396 copies. The track is the second single from Minaj's upcoming third album Pinkprint, following Pills N Potions, which peaked at number 31. Minaj also scores her 27th Top 75 entry but falls short of her ninth Top 10 single with Usher collaboration She Came To Give It To You debuting at number 16 (22,613 sales). Usher has one more Top 75 entry than Minaj, and a better strike rate, with 17 of his previous hits ending up in the Top 10. She Came To Give It To You is from his upcoming (eighth) studio album UR.

Jeremih scored one Top 40 hit off each of his first two albums, reaching number 15 with Birthday Sex from his eponymous 2009 debut album, and number 30 with Down On Me (feat. 50 Cent) from the following year's All About You. He surpasses both of those peaks with Don't Tell 'Em (feat. YG) - the first single from his upcoming third album - which is based largely on Snap!'s Rhythm Is A Dancer and debuts at number five (48,355 sales)

18 weeks after debut single Ghost levitated to number one on sales of 137,656 copies, X Factor alumnus Ella Henderson's follow-up Glow opens more quietly, at number seven, on sales of 39,103 copies. Ghost falls to the lowest position of its chart career, fading 21-22 but sells a further 18,813 copies to raise its overall sales to a massive 817,984. Both songs are on Henderson's debut album, Chapter One, which is released today (13th).

Ed Sheeran's X delivers its third Top 10 hit as Thinking Out Loud sprints 17-10 (30,414 sales). It follows the release of a promotional videclip for the track, which was an instant and massive success of YouTube and also enters the TV airplay chart at number 29, more than offsetting the 41-51 slip the song makes on the radio airplay chart. Released initially as an 'instant gratification' track from X, Thinking Out Loud debuted 15 weeks ago at number 26 and has remained in the Top 40 ever since .Previously peaked at number 13, it has climbed four weeks in a row. It has already sold 304,939 copies, and is Sheeran's ninth Top 10 hit in all.

Elsewhere in the Top 10: Taylor Swift's Shake It Off dips 3-4 (51,174 sales), Calvin Harris' Blame (feat. John Newman) falls 5-6 (42,668 sales), Sigma's Changing (feat. Paloma Faith) slides 4-8 (36,344 sales) and George Ezra's Blame It On Me descends 6-9 (30,510 sales).

Luvbug's Resonance (feat. Talay Riley) debuts at number 13 (27,486 sales).

Dropped without prior notice last Tuesday (7th) following its first airing across a multitude of BBC radio and TV outlets, the multi-artist version of The Beach Boys' 1966 number two hit God Only Knows - credited to Brian Wilson & Various Artists and benefitting Children In Need - had a lesser first impact than most would have expected, and debuts at number 20 with 19,145 sales. It is still a month until the annual Children In Need telethon, so there's plenty of time for the track to grow.

Aside from those already mentioned, the only other newcomers to the Top 75 are Only Human by Cheryl (number 70, 5,291 sales), Walk by Kwabs (number 71, 5,101 sales) and Hot N***a by Bobby Shmurda (number 75, 4,811 sales).

Oh Cecilia (Breaking My Heart) by The Vamps reaches a new peak, climbing 63-46 (8,389 sales)

Overall singles sales are down 0.52% week-on-week at 5,639,735. Streaming accounted for 3,013,594 sales last week – 53.44% of the total. Under previously existing criteria where only paid-for purchases were included, overall singles sales are down 3.62% week-on-week at 2,626,141 – 14.53% below same week 2013 sales of 3,072,727 and the 61st consecutive week in which they have declined versus a year ago.

====================

Albums

For only the second time in 41 chart weeks that have elapsed thus far in 2014, there is no change at the top of either the singles or albums chart, with Meghan Trainor's All About That Bass continuing for a second week on the former, and George Ezra's Wanted On Voyage doing likewise on the latter.

Ezra's repeat triumph - on sales of 25,948 copies, the lowest for a number one for 26 weeks - occurs on another very busy week of chart action which sees 10 albums debuting in the Top 20 and 19 in the Top 75 - and despite the fact that the two hits from Wanted On Voyage both dip this week, with Blame It On Me falling 6-9 and Budapest declining 10-15.

The newcomers include many veteran campaigners - but the week's highest new entry comes from 24 year old Irish singer/songwriter Hozier's eponymous debut album, which opens at number five on sales of 11,488 copies - an excellent result considering his maiden chart single, Take Me To Church, has yet to make the Top 20 and, in fact, falls six notches from its peak position of 26 to number 32 (16,183 sales) this week. Take Me To Church has been charting for over a year in Ireland, where it is one of three top three singles plucked from the set, and one of 10 Hozier songs in the Top 100. The album is number one there for the third straight week.

Canadian musician Dan Snaith has released six previous albums, using the names Manitoba, Daphni and Caribou, with the last name providing his one chart appearance in 2010, when Swim debuted and peaked at number 54 (2,910 sales). A subsequent 2012 techno album Jiaolong, released under the name Daphni, failed to chart but Snaith returns to the Caribou monicker for new album Our Love, which embraces dance and urban styles, and has much improved fortunes, with the album debuting at number eight (7,423 sales).

With former Smiths bandmate Morrissey making the news with his latest health problems, Johnny Marr returns to the chart with second solo album Playland debuting at nine (7,281 sales). The 50 year old Mancunian's first solo album, The Messenger, was released last year and opened at number 10 on sales of 11,747 copies. It has since gone on to sell 34,388 copies.

Latest single Unmissable (feat. Zak Abel) declines from its debut position of 19 to number 42 (9,718 sales) this week, thus falling well short of providing a third straight Top 10 hit for Gorgon City. The London duo's debut album Sirens - which features the track as well as the number four hit Ready For Your Love (feat. MNEK) and the number seven hit Here For You (feat. Laura Welsh) - nevertheless opens at number 10 (6,847 sales).

Elsewhere in the Top 10: Ed Sheeran's X climbs 3-2 (24,507 sales), Sam Smith's In The Lonely Hour slips 2-3 (19,806 sales), Barbra Streisand's Patners recovers 5-4 (17,520 sales), The Script's No Sound Without Silence holds at number six (9,123 sales) and Genesis' R-Kive climbs 10-7 (8,932 sales).

Dipping out of the Top 10: This Is All Yours (9-13, 5,620 sales) by Alt-J, Carry On The Grudge (4-15, 5,458 sales) by Jamie T, (What's The Story) Morning Glory (7-30, 3,111 sales) by Oasis and Art Official Age (8-39, 2,557 sales) by Prince.

Bryan Adams' first album of new recordings since 2008 when 11 reached number six on sales of 26,888 copies, his first ever covers set, Tracks Of My Years debuts at number 11 (6,405 sales). Including his versions of the Smokey Robinson (almost) title track Tracks Of My Tears, and songs originally recorded by The Beach Boys and Chuck Berry, its only original song, She Knows Me has been an unsuccessful single. It has failied to make the Top 200 since it was released seven weeks ago, although it has spent five weeks in the Top 50 of the radio airplay chart, climbing as high as number 23. Tracks Of My Years is the eighth consecutive studio album by Adams to reach the Top 20 here - ninth if Hans Zimmerman soundtrack collaboration Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron is included. In addition to his studio albums, Adams has, of course, also issued live and compilation albums, and Tracks Of My Years is his 16th Top 75 album in a chart career stretching back to 1985’s Reckless.

Falling short of becoming their fourth straight number one studio album in America, country trio Lady Antebellum likewise fail to register their fourth straight Top 10 album in the UK, with latest offering 747 failing to fly as high as its predecessors, and debuting at number 12 (5,998 sales). Both their UK and US chart runs exclude their Christmas album, On This Winter Night. Their UK breakthrough album Need You Now, a number eight hit from 2010, remains by far their biggest seller here with a to-date tally of 349,906, while the single of the same name has sold 531,404 copies - a huge tally for a track that peaked at number 15.

Generating mostly favourable reviews Fleetwood Mac member Stevie Nicks' eighth solo album 24 Karat Gold: Songs From The Vault features Nicks' newly recorded versions of songs she wrote and demoed anything between 19 and 45 years ago - and her version of Vanessa Carlton's Carousel. It debuts at number 14 (5,508 sales) for 66 year old Nicks, equalling the debut/peak position of her last (2011) album In Your Dreams, although the latter title sold nearly twice as many copies (10,444) to earn the position.

After missing the Top 200 completely with two independently released albums, Watford band Lower Than Atlantis broke through with their third album, and debut Island set Changing Tune entering at number 25 (4,842 sales) two years ago this week. Their eponymous fourth album now debuts at number 16 (5,430 sales). It is also two years to the week since Californian electronic/experimental artist Flying Lotus scored his second chart album with Until The Quiet Comes (number 34, 4,051 sales) - follow-up You're Dead debuts higher (number 24) on lower sales (3,890). And it is also exactly two years since Rodgers & Hammerstein At The Movies (number 18, 6,470 sales), the second chart album by BBC Proms fixture, The John Wilson Orchestra, who also deliver their third chart album this week, with Cole Porter In Hollywood (number 62, 1,552 sales).

Former UB40 lead singer Ali Campbell's fifth solo album Silhouette maintains his 100% Top 20 strike rate, debuting at number 18 (5,367 sales) - though maybe we shouldn't call it a solo album at all, as it features his former UB40 colleagues Astro and Mickey, and the trio were originally going to trade as UB40 Reunited. Very much in UB40's reggae style and buoyed by Campbell's appearance on Later...With Jools Holland, the album is nevertheless the lowest charting of his solo albums, superceding the most recent, Great British Songbook, which opened and peaked at number 15 (8,752 sales) four years ago next week. Half of the Siilhouette is made up of originals, the other half of covers - and like Bryan Adams on his new album, Campbell has chosen to cover Bob Dylan and The Beatles. More remarkably, Adams and Campbell have chosen the same obscure (as much as any Beatles song can be) Lennon/McCartney song, Any Time At All, from the soundtrack to A Hard Day's Night. It is one of the Fab Four's least covered songs, with probably fewer than 30 versions recorded, including those by Dweezil Zappa, Melanie, Nils Lofgren, Mayday, Terra Molhada, Opus, Blue Ash, The Punkles and Los Rolls.

It is 11 years next week since Jamie Cullum's breakthrough album Twentysomething debuted at number 22 (12,675 sales). It peaked 19 weeks later at number three and has thus far sold 1,159,985 copies. His stock has fallen considerably since then, and last outing, Momentum debuted and peaked at number 20 (7,086) and has thus far sold just 40,397 copies - less than 4% of Twentysomething's tally. Cullum's new album, Interlude, just extends to five his run of straight Top 20 entries, as it debuts at number 19 (5,325 sales). Cullum and guest duettist Gregory Porter sang first single Don't Let me Be Misunderstood on the first Strictly Come Dancing results show of the season eight days ago. American Porter, incidentally, seems to have benefitted from the exposure, and his breakthrough album Liquid Spirit - which has charted as high as number three - sprints 61-25 (3,528 sales) this week, lifting its overall sales to 101,618.

Perennially popular Irish folk duo Foster & Allen rack up their 31st chart entry since 1983 with Gold & Silver Days debuting at number 28 (3,241 sales). Together for almost 40 years, Mick Foster is 67, and Tony Allen is 62.

42 years after his first album, and six years after his last, 65 year old singer/songwriter Jackson Browne's 13th studio album Standing On The Breach debuts at number 31 (3,087 sales). Although all but the first three of those albums made the Top 75, Standing On The Breach is only the sixth of them to make the Top 40, and the first since 1993. 1977 live album Running On Empty also made the Top 40.

It's 20 years since Weezer made their chart debut, and their ninth studio album, Everything Will Be Alright In The End, brings their eighth chart entry, debuting at number 37 (2,723 sales).

Also new to the Top 75 this week: US hip-hop duo NehruvianDOOM's eponymous album (number 65, 1,444 sales), Sixx:A.M.'s Modern Vintage (number 69, 1,386 sales), New Found Glory's Resurrection (number 74, 1,263 sales) and Yellowcard's Lift A Sail (number 75, 1,255 sales).

Google Play's 99p digital download last week was Green Day's American Idiot. The album, which debuted at number one 10 years and two weeks ago at number one on sales of 89,385 copies, increased sales last week by 493.80% to 4,525, as it soared 124-21 to achieve its highest chart position since April 2006. Its career sales are 2,101,961.

On the compilation chart, Keep Calm And Chillout is number one for the fourth straight week, on sales of 16,719 copies.

Overall album sales are down 5.48% week-on-week at 1,229,616 - 7.50% below same week 2013 sales of 1,329,312.

* In mentioning the sales (4,611,862) of Oasis' (What's The Story) Morning Glory? last week, I inadvertently restored its former status as the number two studio album of all-time. It is, of course, number three on that list, behind the correctly identified Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band by The Beatles (5,084,978 sales) and the album I temporarily forgot, Adele's 21. Sales of 21 at that time were 4,720,190, and - as it falls 94-105 this week, selling a further 879 copies - are now 4,721,109. It has spent 194 consecutive weeks in the Top 200, with a lowest position to date of number 160 in the final week of 2013.
