Keith Jarett ranking and sales of Keith Jarett's albums in the Oricon charts - Japan.

Jarrett Booms In Japan
By HARUHIKO FUKUHARA
TOKYO—In just five years, Keith Jarrett has achieved a feat rarely equalled in Japan's jazz market by selling solo records worth a total of over $5 million. To mark this special achievement, he was recently awarded a gold disk from manufacturer Victor Co. of Japan. Jarrett’s latest contribution, his fifth here, is a 10-disk package entitled "Sun Bear Concerts Piano Solo." Recorded in Japan and released by Trio Records on Sept. 25, the package sold 15.000 sets in the first month, bringing Jarrett's cumulative total of solo LPs sold in Japan past the 700,000 unit and $5 million marks.
The other four releases were "Solo Concerts" (Dec. 1973), the "Koln Concert" (Oct. 1975) and "Hymns Spheres" and "Staircase" (both Feb 15/7) Individual release sales were 72,000 sets, 110.000 sets. 17,000 sets and 42.000 sets, respectively. About half of Jarrett's fans are students, judging from the findings of a recent survey, while pop and classical music fans also go for his music. Tickets for a Jarrett Dec. 12 solo concert at the Nippon Budokan Hall holding 10,000 in Tokyo were sold out weeks before. This further underscores Jarrett's popularity, and indicates how many believe he has now attained in Japan the status of such other jazz greats as Miles Davis and John Coltrane. - Billboard 1978.

Kenny Rogers ranking and sales of Kenny Roger's albums in the Oricon charts - Japan.

1980.11.21 Greatest Hits # 24, 19, 47 760 LP + 4 220 CT
In Tokyo, Kenny Rogers continues as the country star selling the most records in Japan, although bluegrass has a steady following, especially among university students.
As for the live scene, there have been more country music concerts and festivals during the past year than in the previous year, due partly to the popularity of such movies as “Urban Cowboy" and “Honey-suckle Rose."
And those featured in the concerts and festivals are the veteran country singers and musicians who have been on the country music scene for anywhere from 20 to 30 years.
Kenny Rogers' albums are steady sellers in Japan, but they are in the pop vocal section in record shops.
They would not sell as well if placed in the country music section, which is very small in record shops.
Aki Inagaki, Liberty label manager at King Record Co., says that all the eight Rogers‘ albums available in Japan continue to sell with “Kenny Rogers‘ Greatest Hits“ released in Japan in November 1980 chalking up the most sales so far, approximately 100.000 disks and 20.000 tapes. The “Kenny" album released in November 1979 has gone to 50.000, while the ”Gideon” album (June 1980) is at 40.000 and continuing to increase.
InagaKi says that the newest “Share Your Love“ album released on July 7. 1981 sold 40.000 in one month. He said that previously Rogers' fans had been university students or older. but now there was a wider range of fans, including high school students.
He says there‘s a sort of “country allergy" in Japan which results in country music records not selling very well when placed in the country music section. Placing the records in the pop vocal section helps to sell them, as in the case of Rogers' albums - Billboard 1981-11-07
Willie Nelson Album on the Oricon's charts, Japan.

1983.12.21 WITHOUT A SONG # 37, 11 weeks, 19 840 LP + 9 190 CT
Akira Ohbayashi, product manager of CBS/Sony's international div., says that interest in Willie Nelson‘s records had been sparked by the movie. “The Electric Horseman.” released in Japan in March 80, Nelson himself appeared in the movie.
From May 1980. FM Tokyo on its “Welcome to Hard Times" FM program featured Nelson for 18 weeks, even going to the United States to interview him. Consequently. Nelson‘« star Dust. » which was issued in Japan three years ago, is selling again with total sales coming to 15.000 albums.
Ohbayashi says that the “Mona Lisa" album released in May this year has already gone over 20.000 copies, while the “Honey suckle Rose" 1980 two-album set has just been placed on sale in September with an initial pressing of 10.000 sets - Billboard 1981-11-07
