There's no midweek update today (Monday 2 January 2017). The OCC haven't published an update and Music Week have just repeated the midweek update from last Wednesday. The same happened at MW last Monday (the midweek chart was again a repeat from the previous Wednesday) but we did get a new update on Wednesday so fingers crossed that we have an up-to-date update this Wednesday.

Ed Sheeran heading for huge Official Chart comeback

Ed Sheeran looks set to make a huge comeback on the Official Chart this week, OfficialCharts.com can confirm.

The returning singer/songwriter, who has been away from the public spotlight for the past 12 months, dropped two new tracks in the early hours of Friday morning, Shape Of You and Castle On The Hill, and is well on his way for a massive week of sales and streams, and quite possibly a new chart feat for good measure.

Way out in front on today’s early Official Charts Company sales flash are Ed’s two new tracks Shape Of You and the anthemic Castle On The Hill, about life growing up in Framlingham, Suffolk. Shape Of You takes the lead at Number 1 with a cool 83,000 chart sales after just 48 hours, while Castle On The Hill trails closely behind in second place.

Both tracks are currently performing strongly across streaming and downloads, each outstripping the rest of the Top 10 combined at this early stage of the week.

While Ed Sheeran in no stranger to the dizzy heights of the Official Singles Chart summit having already notched up two Number 1 singles in his own name with 2014’s Sing and Thinking Out Loud, and penning further chart toppers for the likes of One Direction and Justin Bieber, this week could be a record-breaking week for Ed.

If both tracks remain at the top on Friday’s final chart placings, then Sheeran could set a new Official Chart record – the first artist to enter the Official Singles Chart at Number 1 and Number 2 with two brand new tracks.

I've not checked but i imagine supermarkets will now have George Michael albums on display.
My local Asda didn't bother updating their charts at all over New Year week. Ordinarily they might have and George would have had a physical boost sooner.

For sales these days they are absolutely amazing. And he's going to break a chart record on Friday - the first artist to have the top 2 as new entries. Quite amazing!

I think it will be quite common situation for streaming/download era to see one (huge) artist to debut a few songs at the top of the chart.... I bet Adele, maybe Beyonce, Justin could make the same impressive impact in the future.

Indeed! It's possibly lead to Ed losing up to 20,000 sales on each of his top 2 singles.

I've not heard either of Ed Sheeran's new songs yet and so can't comment further on the music or deservedness of their stellar sales/streaming performance so far this week. But i can say that it is always quite a nice frisson for chart followers to have a first-time event in the offing, regardless of whether we appreciate the stuff in question - two new singles released simultaneously debuting at Nos 1 and 2 is quite a feat, even for an established artist whose next material will be keenly-anticipated. Though I agree with jszmiles that it could well become more frequent, if not commonplace, for major acts with eagerly-awaited new music to achieve this, if this strategy of releasing two lead singles together is followed.

Saying that, I'm not really clear on what the benefit of issuing two tracks at the same time ahead of a forthcoming parent album might be? Although the sales for these two are equally-impressive and either would easily yield a combined No 1 chart-topper in any average typical week in the present climate, might it not have been more productive if only one had been released, which possibly might've attained a greater first-week tally?

If Adele for example had issued 'Hello' and let's say 'When We Were Young' as a brace in October 2015, would the overall unit tally for whichever secured the No 1 spot have been noticeably less than what 'Hello' achieved on its own, as its sister title had 'leached' sales from it and so shared the spoils between the two? Or would both have attained similarly lofty returns effectively doubling what 'Hello' managed alone? Perhaps there is no hard and fast certainty?

I suppose there is the prospect that really ardent fans will vacuum-up whatever new material is issued after their favoured artist has had a significant hiatus, almost regardless of the nature or quality of it, and what with a download or stream being so cheap and easy, on that basis, it is very possible that if two tracks are issued at the same time, both will receive equal attention and so rack-up similarly strong tallies in their first week, rather than one title becoming a favourite with fans who then concentrate their interests only in that song, leaving its counterpart as an afterthought with far-fewer chart sales. If this is the more likely scenario, then it makes the forthcoming feat from Sheeran even more remarkable.
