Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' Album Hits Milestone 300th Week on Chart
8/11/2017 by Keith Caulfield

So far this year, the Grateful Dead has sold 225,000 albums. Of that sum, 99,000 come from its five archival sets that have arrived on the Billboard 200 in 2017.

Notably, the group has sold more albums in 2017 than such acts as Pearl Jam (84,000), Frank Sinatra (126,000) and Elton John (117,000), though less than The Beatles (560,000), The Rolling Stones (234,000) and Pink Floyd (312,000).

I'd guess that would put the Beatles in 6th or 7th place for album sales so far this year.

In top place are Metallica - they have 6 albums in the YTD top 200 with combined sales of 945,000. I'd expect sales from the remainder of their back catalog to take their total past the million mark.

Ed Sheeran's second - "+" "x" & "÷" have sold a combined 935,000. His EP releases will add a few thousand to that number.

Kendrick Lamar is third - he has 3 albums on the YTD top 200 with 864,000 sales. His other releases could take him close to 900K.

Chris Stapleton is fourth - 734,000

Bruno Mars is fifth - 656,000.

Either 6th or 7th is Drake - I have his main releases at 548,000, but sales of his less well known stuff could take him past that Beatles total.
