Lorde Earns First No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart With 'Melodrama'
6/25/2017 by Keith Caulfield

Plus: 2 Chainz, Jason Isbell, Nickelback, Young Thug & Fleet Foxes debut in top 10.

Lorde notches her first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart, as her second full-length album, Melodrama, debuts atop the list. The set, which was released on June 16 through Lava/Republic Records, earned 109,000 equivalent album units in the week ending June 22, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 82,000 were in traditional album sales.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week in the U.S. based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). The new July 8-dated chart (where Lorde starts at No. 1) will be posted in full to Billboard’s websites on Tuesday, June 27.

Melodrama follows Lorde’s debut full-length album, Pure Heroine, which debuted and peaked at No. 3 in 2013 with 129,000 copies sold in its first week (before the album chart transitioned to a consumption-based ranking in 2014).

Melodrama marks the third album by a woman in a row at No. 1 on the chart (in as many weeks), following the chart-topping arrivals of Katy Perry’s Witness (July 1) and Halsey’s Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (June 24). The chart last had three women in a row back in December 2012, when Taylor Swift’s Red returned to No. 1 (Dec. 22), following No. 1 bows by Alicia Keys’ Girl on Fire (Dec. 15) and Rihanna’s Unapologetic (Dec. 8). Until the latest triple, the chart had not housed three new No. 1s by women since September 2009, when Whitney Houston’s I Look to You (Sept. 19) followed Colbie Caillat’s Breakthrough (Sept. 12) and Reba’s Keep On Loving You (Sept. 5). (All three titles were spending their first week at No. 1, and all debuted atop the tally.)

Lorde leads a jam-packed top 10, as six albums debut in the region -- the most debuts in the top 10 in nearly eight months. The chart last had more bows in the top 10 on the Nov. 12, 2016-dated list, when seven albums debuted, led by Lady Gaga’s No. 1 launch with Joanne.

On the new Billboard 200, 2 Chainz’s Pretty Girls Like Trap Music starts at No. 2 with 106,000 units (57,000 in traditional album sales). The album collected the most on-demand audio streams for its songs among any album on the chart, with 46,000 SEA units (equating to 69.5 million streams for its tracks). The album earns 2 Chainz his fourth straight top 10 (in as many charting albums), following Collegrove (No. 4 in 2016), B.O.A.T.S. II #METIME (No. 3, 2013) and Based on a T.R.U. Story (No. 1, 2012).

Kendrick Lamar’s former three-week No. 1 DAMN. moves 2-3 in its 10th chart week, with 70,000 units (up 1 percent).

Jason Isbell claims his highest charting album, second top 10 effort and best sales week, as The Nashville Sound (with The 400 Unit) debuts at No. 4 with 54,000 units. Of that sum, 51,000 were in traditional album sales. That surpasses Isbell’s previous sales high of 46,000, logged by Something More Than Free in its debut frame back in 2015. Something More Than Free was also his high-water mark on the chart until this week, as it debuted and peaked at No. 6.

Nickelback notches its seventh top 10 effort, as Feed the Machine bows at No. 5 with 47,000 units (43,000 in traditional album sales). The album is the band’s first through BMG, after one album with Republic (2014’s No Fixed Address) and an earlier long run with Roadrunner Records.

Drake’s More Life falls one rung to No. 6 with 42,000 units (up 3 percent) while Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) also is down one spot to No. 7 with 38,000 units (down 8 percent). The sets led the Billboard 200 for three and two weeks, respectively.

Young Thug’s Beautiful Thugger Girls debuts at No. 8 with 37,000 units, bolstered by 28,000 in SEA units. The album sold 7,000 copies and tallied a little more than 1,000 TEA units. It’s the third top 10 set for the rapper, after Jeffery (No. 8 in April 2016) and Slime Season 3 (No. 7 in September 2016).

Alternative/folk band Fleet Foxes claims its second top 10 effort, as Crack-Up bows at No. 9 with 34,000 units (32,000 in traditional album sales). It’s the first release for the act in nearly six years, since Helplessness Blues, which debuted and peaked at No. 4 in May of 2011.

Rounding out the new top 10 is Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic, descending two slots to No. 10. It earned 30,000 units in the latest tracking week (down 8 percent).

I have a question. Is the non-traditional sales (cdsingles used to post) means the digital sales?

I had the same questions for my source years ago when they first starting providing me with the SoundScans. They sent me the breakdown from each category. It may take awhile to search my emails & I'll let you know but from what I remember, I believe non-traditional sales were digital sales only.

This was to keep physical sales separate from digital. In other words, Amazon digital sales would fall under non-traditional where physical would be under Mass Marketed.

'Despacito' Tops Hot 100 for 7th Week & DJ Khaled's 'Wild Thoughts,' Featuring Rihanna & Bryson Tiller, Debuts at No. 4
by Gary Trust

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito," featuring Justin Bieber, rules the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated July 8) for a seventh week. Meanwhile, DJ Khaled's new single "Wild Thoughts," featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller, soars onto the Hot 100 at No. 4.

As we do each Monday, let's run down the top 10 of the Hot 100, which blends all-genre sales, airplay and streaming data. All charts will update on Billboard.com tomorrow, June 27.

"Despacito" (released on Universal Music Latino / Raymond Braun / SchoolBoy / Def Jam / UMLE / Republic Records) leads the Digital Song Sales chart for an eighth week, with 139,000 downloads sold (down 1 percent) in the week ending June 22, according to Nielsen Music; the remix with Bieber accounts for 78 percent of the song's sales (in line with its 80 percent share the prior three weeks). The track tops the Streaming Songs chart for a seventh week, with 66.6 million U.S. streams (down 4 percent) in the week ending June 22. On Radio Songs, "Despacito" pushes 3-2 with 134 million in all-format airplay audience (up 6 percent) in the week ending June 18.

Now on top for seven weeks, "Despacito" is halfway to matching the command of the longest-leading predominantly Spanish-language Hot 100 No. 1: Los Del Rio's "Macarena" (powered by its Bayside Boys remix) ruled for 14 weeks in 1996.

"Despacito" also tops the Hot Latin Songs chart for a 21st week and the Songs of the Summer chart for a fourth frame, having led each week since the summery summary made its annual return just after Memorial Day.

DJ Khaled's "I'm the One," featuring Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne, keeps at No. 2 on the Hot 100; it debuted atop theMay 20-dated chart and then spent five weeks at No. 3 before its rebound to No. 2. "One" dips 2-3 on both Streaming Songs and Digital Song Sales, while lifting 7-6 on Radio Songs (109 million, up 2 percent). It crowns Hot Rap Songs for an eighth week and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs for a third frame.

Bruno Mars' "That's What I Like" is steady at No. 3 on the Hot 100; it topped the May 13-dated chart. Still, it leads Radio Songs for an eighth week (152 million, down 2 percent), breaking a tie for his longest command as a lead artist, as it passes the seven-week No. 1 runs of "Just the Way You Are" (2010) and "Locked Out of Heaven" (2013); he's led longer only as featured on Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk!" (12 weeks, 2015). "Like" also leads Hot R&B Songs for a 19th week.

Impressively, Mars' record label, Atlantic Records, has now led Radio Songs for 20 consecutive weeks, thanks to "Like" and Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You," which racked a 12-week reign directly before. That's the longest streak for a label since then-Island Def Jam Music Group linked 24 straight weeks at No. 1 in 2005 with Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" (16) and "Shake It Off" (three) and Kanye West's "Gold Digger," featuring Jamie Foxx (five).

Now, more Khaled: "Wild Thoughts," featuring Rihanna and Tiller, blasts onto the Hot 100 at No. 4 (following its June 16 release). It starts at No. 2 on both Digital Song Sales (89,000 sold) and Streaming Songs (36.3 million) and No. 23 on Radio Songs (42 million), marking the highest-ever debut on the lattermost list for Khaled, Rihanna and Tiller and the best by any act since Meghan Trainor's "No" began at No. 21 on March 26, 2016.

"Thoughts," from Khaled's new album, Grateful, released Friday (June 23), and which samples Santana's "Maria Maria," a 10-week Hot 100 No. 1 (featuring The Product G&B) in 2000, marks Rihanna's 31st top 10, the third-best total dating to the Hot 100's Aug. 4, 1958, launch. Here's an updated look at the acts with the most Hot 100 top 10s:

38, Madonna
34, The Beatles
31, Rihanna
29, Michael Jackson (as a soloist)
28, Stevie Wonder

Khaled collects his third Hot 100 top 10, following "I'm the One" and "I'm on One" (featuring Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne), the latter of which reached No. 10 in 2011. Tiller, who posted his first Billboard 200 No. 1 album three weeks ago with True to Self, earns his first Hot 100 top 10. He previously hit a No. 13 high in January 2016 with his debut entry, "Don't."

"Thoughts" additionally marks the third-highest debut of Rihanna's now 60 Hot 100 entries. She started at higher ranks only as featured on two Eminem tracks that each eventually hit No. 1: "Love the Way You Lie" (No. 2 debut, 2010) and "The Monster" (No. 3, 2013). Meanwhile, Rihanna is the fourth woman to make at least 60 Hot 100 appearances, joining Nicki Minaj (78), Aretha Franklin (73) and Taylor Swift (70).

Rounding out the Hot 100's top five, Sheeran's former 12-week Hot 100 No. 1 "Shape of You" descends 4-5, while extending its record for the most weeks spent in the top five from a song's debut, having now tallied its first 24 weeks on the Hot 100 in the top five, dating to its start at No. 1 (Jan. 28).

Kendrick Lamar's "Humble.," which topped the May 6-dated Hot 100, slips 5-6; Future's No. 5-peaking "Mask Off" drops 6-7; and Post Malone's first Hot 100 top 10, "Congratulations," featuring Quavo, rises to a new peak (9-8).

The Chainsmokers and Coldplay's No. 3-peaking "Something Just Like This" retreats 7-9 on the Hot 100, as The Chainsmokers spend a 60th consecutive week in the top 10, a streak second only to Katy Perry's record 69-week run in 2010-11. The collab also collects a 13th week atop the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart. Capping the Hot 100's top 10, Zedd and Alessia Cara's "Stay" falls 8-10 after reaching No. 7.

Just beyond the Hot 100's top 10, Imagine Dragons' "Believer" hits a new high (15-11), while ruling Hot Rock Songs for a 16th week, and Selena Gomez's "Bad Liar" jumps 23-20, reaching the top 20 for the first time, boosted by the June 14 premiere of its official video.

Find out more Hot 100 news in the weekly "Hot 100 Chart Moves" column and by listening (and subscribing) to Billboard's Chart Beat Podcast and Pop Shop Podcast, all posting this week. Plus, visit Billboard.com tomorrow (June 27), when all charts, including the Hot 100 in its entirety, will refresh.

If that would be the case, the single Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever with sales of 1,506 copies (0 1,502 0 2) would have had 2 digital sales some weeks ago. :(

Chart Watch: DJ Khaled, a Classic Late-Bloomer
by Paul Grein, Writer
Yahoo Music
June 26, 2017

Many recording artists’ careers start to sputter around the time they hit 40. That’s when DJ Khaled‘s career went into overdrive. The rapper and producer, 41, has two songs in the top five on this week’s Hot 100. “I’m the One” (featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper, and Lil Wayne) holds at No. 2 this week. It debuted at No. 1 seven weeks ago. “Wild Thoughts” (featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller) is this week’s top new entry at No. 4. Both songs are from Khaled’s new album, the aptly-titled Grateful, which is expected to enter the Billboard 200 at No. 1 next week. That would make it his second No. 1 album in a row, following last year’s Major Key.

DJ Khaled’s first nine albums all made the top 15 on The Billboard 200. It helps that he is able to attract some of the biggest stars in pop music to sing on this tracks. Beyoncé and Jay Z were featured on “Shining,” the first single from Grateful. Drake was featured on “To the Max,” the third single from the album.

“Wild Thoughts” is Rihanna’s 31st top 10 hit, which puts her in third place among all artists since the inception of the Hot 100 in 1958. She trails Madonna (38) and The Beatles (34). If you scroll back to 1955, the start of the “rock era,” Elvis Presley joins this elite group with 38 top 10 hits.

This week marks the first time that a woman has appeared in the top five on the Hot 100 (as a lead or featured artist) since Taylor Swift’s “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever (Fifty Shades Darker)” (a collabo with Zayn) ended a nine-week run in the top five in April. That’s a 12-week period in which women were completely shut out of the top five. Billboard‘s Gary Trust reports that that’s the longest period in which no women made the top five (either as solo artists or group members) since 1972, when there was a 13-week shutout. That drought was ended, appropriately, by Helen Reddy’s feminist battle cry’ “I Am Woman.”

“Wild Thoughts” samples Santana’s “Maria Maria” (featuring the Product G&B), which topped the Hot 100 for 10 weeks in the spring of 2000.

Top Songs

Justin Bieber is featured on the top two hits on the Hot 100 for the second week in a row. Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” logs its seventh week at No. 1. DJ Khaled’s aforementioned “I’m the One” holds at No. 2. This is the second time that Bieber has had the top two songs for two straight weeks. He first achieved the feat in February 2016 with his own hits “Sorry” and “Love Yourself.”

“Despacito” sold 138K digital copies this week, which puts it on top of the digital sales chart for the eighth week.

Bruno Mars’s “That’s What I Like” holds at No. 3 in its 23rd week. The song hit No. 1.

Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” dips from No. 4 to No. 5 in its 24rd week. The song logged 12 weeks at No. 1. It’s the first song in Hot 100 history to spend its first 24 weeks in the top five.

Kendrick Lamar’s “Humble.” dips from No. 5 to No. 6 in its 12th week. The song reached No. 1.

Future’s “Mask Off” dips from No. 6 to No. 7 in its 18th week. The song peaked at No. 5.

Post Malone’s “Congratulations” (featuring Quavo) jumps from No. 9 to No. 8 in its 26th week.

“Something Just Like This” by The Chainsmokers and Coldplay drops from No. 7 to No. 9 in its 18th week. The song peaked at No. 3. This is the 60th consecutive week that The Chainsmokers have had one or more songs in the top 10. Only Katy Perry has had more continuous weeks in the top 10—69 in 2010-11.

“Stay” by Zedd & Alessia Cara drops from No. 8 to No. 10 in its 17th week. The song peaked at No. 7.

Lil Uzi Vert’s “XO TOUR Llif3” drops out of the top 10 this week.

Selena Gomez lands her ninth top 20 hit as “Bad Liar” jumps from No. 23 to No. 20 in its sixth week. Gomez’s old group, Selena Gomez and the Scene, never quite landed a top 20 hit. The group peaked in the 20s on the Hot 100 four times.

Sam Hunt’s “Body Like A Back Road” tops Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart for the 20th week. That’s the longest run at No. 1 by a solo artist in more than 60 years—since Ray Price’s “Crazy Arms” topped the Most Played C&W By Jockeys chart (a forerunner to Hot Country Songs) for 20 weeks in 1956.

Among all hits from the past 60 years, “Body Like a Back Road” is second only to Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise,” which spent 24 weeks on top in 2012-13. Both “Body…” and “Cruise” became crossover smashes. “Body…” has climbed as high as No. 6 on the Hot 100. A remix of “Cruise” featuring Nelly reached No. 4 in July 2013.

James Arthur’s “Say You Won’t Let Go” and Lady Gaga’s “Million Reasons” each top the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. Arthur’s song reached No. 11 on the Hot 100. Gaga’s song reached No. 4. Both ballads have an excellent chance of receiving Grammy nominations for Song of the Year.

Top Albums

Lorde‘s Melodrama enters The Billboard 200 at No. 1. This is the third consecutive week that a female solo artist has opened in the top spot. Halsey debuted at No. 1 two weeks ago with hopeless fountain kingdom. Katy Perry opened at No. 1 last week with Witness. This marks the first time that female solo artists have debuted at No. 1 in three consecutive weeks since September 2009, when Reba McEntire’s Keep on Loving You, Colbie Caillat’s Breakthrough and Whitney Houston’s I Look to You achieved the feat.

Melodrama is Lorde’s sophomore album. Her debut album, Pure Heroine, debuted and peaked at No. 3 in October 2013.

For the record, three female solo artists appeared at No. 1 in successive weeks in December 2013, but not all of those albums were debuts. Rihanna’s Unapologetic and Alicia Keys’ Girl on Fire debuted at No. 1. They were followed by Taylor Swift’s Red, which returned to No. 1 in its seventh week.

Alas, a fast start doesn’t guarantee a long run in the top 10. Witness tumbles from No. 1 to No. 13 in its second week. It’s Perry’s first album to fall out of the top 10 after a single week since her 2008 debut, One of the Boys.

2 Chainz lands his fourth consecutive top five album as Pretty Girls Like Trap Music debuts at No. 2. This is his highest-charting album since his debut, Based on a T.R.U. Story, opened at No. 1 in September 2012.

Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. dips from No. 2 to No. 3 in its 10th week. The album spent its first three weeks at No. 1.

Jason Isbell lands his second top 10 album in a row as The Nashville Sound opens at No. 4. The album also credits his band, The 400 Unit. The album enters Top Country Albums at No. 1, displacing Lady Antebellum’s Heart Break. It’s Isbell’s second No. 1 country album in a row.

Nickelback lands its seventh consecutive top 10 album as Feed the Machine debuts at No. 5. The title is one of the most knowing lines about the pop music industry since Joni Mitchell’s “stokin’ the star-making machinery behind the popular song” (from 1974’s “Free Man in Paris”).

Drake’s More Life dips from No. 5 to No. 6 in its 14th week. It spent its first three weeks on top.

Ed Sheeran’s ÷ dips from No. 6 to No. 7 in its 16th week. It spent its first two weeks at No. 1.

Young Thug’s first full-length album, Beautiful Thugger Girls, debuts at No. 8. The rapper previously made the top 10 with a pair of mixtapes.

Fleet Foxes land their second top 10 album as Crack-Up debuts at No. 9. The group’s previous album, Helplessness Blues, opened at No. 4 in May 2011.

Bruno Mars’s 24K Magic drops from No. 8 to No. 10 in its 31st week. The album has yet to fall out of the top 10. It logged four weeks at No. 2.

Six albums drop out of the top 10 this week. As noted above, Katy Perry’s Witness tumbles from No. 1 to No. 13. SZA’s Ctrl drops from No. 3 to No. 11. Lady Antebellum’s Heart Break drops from No. 4 to No. 24. Halsey’s hopeless fountain kingdom drops from No. 7 to No. 14. Rise Against’s Wolves plummets from No. 9 to No. 174. Post Malone’s Stoney drops from No. 10 to No. 12.

The Moana soundtrack inches up from No. 16 to No. 15 in its 31st week. The album peaked at No. 2. Moana logs its 12th week at No. 1 on the Top Soundtracks chart. That’s the longest run by any soundtrack since Suicide Squad: The Album had 13 weeks on top last year. It’s the longest run by a Disney soundtrack since Frozen had 44 weeks on top in 2013-14.

The Beatles’ Sgt. Peppers’ Lonely Hearts Club Band drops from No. 11 to No. 21 in its 198th chart week. The album is No. 1 on Top Catalog Albums for the fifth non-consecutive week.

Royal Blood’s How Did We Get So Dark? debuts at No. 25. The album enters The Official U.K. Albums Chart at No. 1.

Kendrick Lamar’s 2015 album, To Pimp a Butterfly, tops the 1 million mark in traditional album sales this week. The album spent its first two weeks at No. 1 and wound up with a Grammy nom for Album of the Year. It was Lamar’s follow-up to his 2012 breakthrough, good kid, m.A.A.d. city, which is up to 1,651,000 in traditional sales. Lamar’s current album, DAMN., is up to 665K in trad sales.

Coming Attractions: Look for DJ Khaled’s Grateful and Imagine Dragons’ Evolve to take the top two spots on next week’s chart, in that order.
