The "Europarade" - 2018 to ????

From the end of May 1976 until the beginning of January 1994, chart success around western Europe was measured by the Europarade - "The Chart Of The Charts"! Compiled in the earlier years by TROS-Radio, and in the later ones by SR-1, it was broadcast on these and other radio stations around Europe, and published (occasionally) in various magazines. In 2008 (with very much appreciated help and contributions from others!) a team of three forum members - cavefan, CZB and francisplaiy - posted here very nearly the whole of those 917 weekly charts (and several year-end charts too) - primarily from the notes we had made while listening to those chart shows way back then. These can be found in the following six threads :

1976 to 1979 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52561

1980 to 1982 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52562

1983 to 1985 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52563

1986 to 1988 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52564

1989 to 1991 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52565

1992 to 1994 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52566

More details of the compilation method can be found on those threads. However, for the majority of the period the chart was a top forty, based on the top fifteen positions of each of eleven national charts - Austria (A), Belgium (B), Switzerland (CH), Germany (D), Denmark (DK), Spain (E), France (F), the United Kingdom (GB), Italy (I), Ireland (IRL) and the Netherlands (NL). The charts were weighted equally on a points system, with each number one receiving 15 points, each number 2 receiving 14 points - and so on, down to each number 15 receiving one point. The total points scored, determined the Europarade positions - with records scoring the same points total ranked alphabetically by title. This happened only rarely at the top end of the chart - but frequently at the bottom end, especially when hits had 15 / 14 / 13 points by scoring in the top three in one country, without charting anywhere else at all. The maximum points available should therefore be 165 - back then, no-one could ever have thought that anyone called Ed Sheeran could achieve such chart domination that he might eventually be able to exceed that total !

So, the broadcast years of the Europarade came to an end at the beginning of 1994 - and various other ways of compiling pan-European charts had been used since then. However, we all wondered how the Europarade would have progressed, if it had continued to be compiled in exactly the same way as previously - and remained convinced that such an approach would have continued to be as good a measure of chart success across the continent as it always was !

In 2009, we began a new series of threads, continuing from the beginning of 1994 - setting out for each week the "Europarade" that would have been compiled in the years since then, if the same rules had continued to be applied. While francisplaiy began from the point at which the radio-broadcasted Europarades had ended, CZB concentrated on the noughties - both using the weekly national charts that can be found around the internet and in our own archives. It was a lengthy project - as this time we were doing all the work, not just transcribing the completed charts from our notes and other sources ! However, there came a point when every elapsed week was completed, and it only remained for a new "Europarade" to be compiled and posted each Friday, just as soon as all of the current week's eleven component charts became available and could be processed.

Here are the threads covering the past twenty-four years:

1994 to 1998 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=60376

1999 to 2003 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=65344

2004 to 2008 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=61099

2009 to 2013 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=64107

2014 to 2017 - http://ukmix.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=101807

Since July 2014, it has been possible to hear the highlights of two archive Europarades, usually nineteen years apart, counted down by REX on Radio VRD. The shows can be listened to worldwide using the buttons below "Radio VRD @ tuneIn" and above "VRD Informeert" on the Radio VRD homepage - http://radiovrd.be/ - and air on Mondays to Fridays from 0900 to 1100 CET (8.00am to 10.00am UK time).

This new thread will continue with the new weekly Europarades, starting from the beginning of 2018. Comments are very welcome – and so is any additional information or corrections relating to the earlier ones, especially regarding the few elements that still remain a mystery ! Each week's new chart will hopefully be posted by early Friday evening.

Almost all old Christmas songs are expressly forbidden from re-entering the Belgian chart, and quite exceptional circumstances would also be required for them ever to reappear in the Dutch one. However, in the week including Christmas, which forms the basis of the 2,170th Europarade, they have been doing extremely well in the charts of the other nine countries. As a result, the two highest new entries in the first Europarade of 2018 are a 1988 recording by Chris Rea and a 1961 recording by Brenda Lee . . . . . the two highest re-entries are from Band Aid and Shakin' Stevens . . . . . The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl are in the top ten, and both Mariah Carey and Wham! are in the top five! Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran has his least impressive performance of the past three weeks. Number one in nine countries, number two in Spain, and at number two and number fifteen in Austria, he scores 164 points. Still more than almost every other hit in over forty years of the Europarade has ever achieved, "Perfect" is Western Europe's most successful song for a fourth week.

Seventy-four different tracks are in the top fifteens of Western Europe this week - and Germany's top fourteen are all present in the 2,171st Europarade. As all of the Christmas songs doing well last week suddenly disappear, there are three brand new entries - from Gilli, Nano and G-Eazy and Halsey - and seven re-entries, including the two hits that dominated the Europarade in 2017. "Despacito" is back at number sixteen, but "Shape Of You" has risen back up the charts in so many countries that it returns at number six ! And while the more recent single by Ed Sheeran is no longer the only one scoring everywhere - Camila Cabello also achieves that with "Havana" - he and his various duet partners continue to stay ahead everywhere. In Austria his solo version has fallen to number three (and one of his duets is down to 21) - but they're still all together at number two in Spain, and at number one all of the other nine countries. With 162 points, it's an easy fifth week as Western Europe's favourite track for "Perfect".

Today - Monday January 15th 2018 - I have had my 884th radio show about the Europarade. As I present two charts each show, this means that I have 1768 Europarades covered. As 1768 is 34 times 52 this also means that I have 34 from the 38 years from the period 1977-2014 covered.

Congratulations to you on this further landmark - and congratulations yet again to Ed Sheeran for continuing to score close to maximum points . . . . .

Seventy-nine different tracks appear in the top fifteens of Western Europe this week - and all of the Austrian top fifteen are in the 2,172nd Europarade. They include the collaboration between Liam Payne and Rita Ora that is also charting in Switzerland and the UK - but not very high in any of them, so it's the lowest of six brand new entries. Meanwhile, G-Eazy and Halsey have the biggest climber, Clean Bandit featuring Julia Michaels and NF move up into the top ten, and Camila Cabello still scores in all eleven countries - but Ed Sheeran's domination of the charts everywhere goes on. Number two in Austria, Denmark and Spain and number one everywhere else, "Perfect" has 162 points and spends a sixth week as the continent's number one.

20th - 21st January 2018

01 01 18 PERFECT - ED SHEERAN (A14/B15/CH15/D15/DK14/E14/F15/GB15/I15/IRL15/NL15)

03 04 04 RIVER - EMINEM FEATURING ED SHEERAN (A13/CH12/D13/DK12/GB14/IRL14/NL13)
