I don't usually care too much nowadays who makes the No 1 spot, as I've hardly ever bought it and am used to it being something entirely substandard IMHO. But, this week, please, pleeeeeeeaaaase don't let it be bloody Drake again!! I fear that when he's done his worst on the streaming sector it'll be sitting pretty at the top come Friday, whatever strength its competitors gain in the same period. And if that happens, we know we won't get rid of the b'stard for another two months at least.....

Oh FFS. I really had hoped I might be stretching this too far, but of course I was spot on. Seldom have I taken less satisfaction in being correct in a prediction!

I think this may be the first Drake single that I actually don't mind. Either it is half decent or I'm going a bit crazy! At the very least, having only having heard it a few times I can remember it. I've heard 'God's Plan' quite a few times and I still can't recall a single thing about it other than it's bland!

Amazing for Calvin & Dua looking set for #1 this Friday. :D

Wow @ Kylie's album selling more than Manic Street Preachers yesterday. I'd have expected Resistance is futile to have been quite a comfortable #1 this week.

'The $5.98' EP - I remember that being in the singles charts when the Garage Days were originally being revisited! Has it been expanded in order to qualify for the albums chart? Still not quite sure what the rules are for EPs these days.

Gambo wrote:'The $5.98' EP - I remember that being in the singles charts when the Garage Days were originally being revisited! Has it been expanded in order to qualify for the albums chart? Still not quite sure what the rules are for EPs these days.
When originally released back in 1987 the UK version contained only 4 tracks in order to satisfy then current chart rules. The version that is now charting is the original version that was released elsewhere that contains 5 tracks and which has a running time in excess of 25 minutes.

For singles the rule for EPs ( known as "maxi-singles" in the chart rules) is:

25 minutes and no more than four songs (audio or video) plus alternative audio versions of featured songs.

The rule applies to CDs and 12" singles. For 7" singles the limit is 3 tracks (though still with a 25 minute limit). For cassettes the limit appears to be 3 tracks and 20 minutes. A similar rule as maxi-singles exists for a digital single bundle - 4 tracks + alternatives and 25 minutes.

The exception to this rule is what is known as a "remix" single (which I don't think anyone bothers with these days, at least for commercial releases), which is:

One song title and any number of remixes of that featured title to a maximum of 40 minutes applicable to “Maxi” physical or digital formats and 12” vinyl formats.

Thanks for clarifying it all Robbie - no wonder I can never commit these rules to memory; far too-detailed! But the point is this EP is now longer than its '87 predecessor, which answers my question as to why it's switched charts. Not a particular Metallica fan myself, but a good chum of mine who I saw last night is, and he was rather thrilled to hear of this title's recent upward progress on the albums chart!

Should also add that Changestwobowie is a full reissue - not just vinyl - of a deleted compilation from 1981. Had to correct OCC chart reporter, unbelievably - he thought it was new!.

Record Store Day effect - as usual only a couple will remain by Friday.

Chas and Dave have managed to chart (quite well if you subtract the RSD releases - 15).
I suspect the 2 Cure remix sets'll be combined later - Mixed Up gets a CD deluxe release in June, the other set is just the deluxe extras.

Avicii catalogue set to make double chart impact

The Official Charts Company Midweek Sales Flash is in, and Avicii is set to make an impact in both charts.

The DJ and producer passed away last week aged 28. His Wake Me Up single currently sits at No.13 with 7,543 sales. Levels is at No.24 (5,743 sales), Hey Brother is at No.32 (4,468 sales) and Rita Ora collaboration Lonely Together (3,883 sales) would be at No.40, were it not for chart regulations.

Avicii’s 2013 debut album True places highest of his LPs, and is new in at No.15 after 2,198 sales. Stories (1,309 sales) is new at No.21, while remix set True - Avicii By Avicii (1,267 sales) enters at No.23.

Elsewhere, Ariana Grande is taking on Calvin Harris and Dua Lipa at the singles summit.

Grande’s comeback single No Tears Left To Cry has 30,261 sales for the week so far, and is at No.2 behind Harris and Lipa’s One Kiss (31,176 sales). Drake’s Nice For What (20,828 sales) is at No.3, Lil Dicky’s Freaky Friday (18,946 sales) is at No.4 and George Ezra’s Paradise (12,073 sales) completes the Top 5.

In the albums chart, The Shires are seeking to overhaul The Greatest Showman at No.1 The Shires have amassed 9,285 sales of new LP Accidentally On Purpose and sit at No.2, while the OST remains in top spot with 9,800. J Cole’s KOD (8,846 sales) is at No.3, Black Stone Cherry are at No.4 with Family Tree (6,710 sales) and Nines completes the Top 5 with Crop Circle (6,288 sales).
