UK Airplay Charts and Analysis 2018

I've had a request to post the UK Airplay charts along with the weekly airplay chart analysis which is published in Music Week each week.

Two main UK Airplay charts are compiled each week by Radio Monitor. One covers radio airplay, the other videos which are shown on music video channels on TV. The chart date is the date that the chart is published (a Friday) and the tracking period is the 7 days to the previous day (Friday to Thursday). For example, for the chart dated Friday 5 January 2018 the tracking period is Friday 29 December 2017 to Thursday 4 January 2018. The chart analysis is written by Alan Jones and is published in Music Week each week.

The charts covers just about every radio staion and music video TV station in the UK. The only radio stations that most likely don't report data are going to be small community stations with very small audience figures. I'm less certain about what TV stations may not be included but again the main channels are included. The radio airplay chart measures audience impressions by tracking the actual time of day a track is played and linking this back to the average audience that is estimated to be listening at that particular time. The estimates of audience by reference to radio station and time of day are provided by RAJAR, an industry body that calculates estimated audience figures on a quarterly basis. For TV airplay the chart simply measures how many times a video was played with no reference to audience size.

With thanks to MJ2018 who posts these charts at BuzzJack and of course to Alan Jones and Music Week for the airplay analysis.

Airplay Analysis: Camila Cabello topples Ed Sheeran on TV airplay

by Alan Jones

Topping the radio airplay chart for the seventh time in eight weeks, Ed Sheeran's Perfect has recovered some of the losses it made to Christmas fare in the previous fortnight, with plays increasing 2.91% week-on-week from 6,563 to 6,754, and audience rising 4.47% from 77.19m to 80.64m. It thus increases its lead over Rita Ora's Anywhere, which is its runner-up for the fourth week in a row, with a slight diminution of both metrics - plays are down 1.20% from 6,534 to 6,456 and audience by 0.84% from 60.87m to 60.36m.

Perfect suffered a big dip in support at BBC Radio 1, which reduced its rotation from 12 plays to just one, but this was more than compensated for in audience terms by a rise from eight to 12 plays at sister station BBC Radio 2. At the Capital Network, it polled 790 plays in the week, down from 869 in the previous frame.

Christmas songs suffered huge drops, and precipitated a rare 50% change in the Top 10, where there were returns and new peaks for Taylor Swift's Gorgeous (11-5), Clean Bandit's I Miss You (feat Julia Michaels, 21-8) and Selena Gomez x Marshmello's Wolves (16-10). Also resurgent, Pink's former No.1 What About Us bounces 18-6, while follow-up Beautiful Trauma - which went as high as No.3 - rallies 12-9.

Slipping to No.3 on the TV airplay chart after a fortnight at No.1, Ed Sheeran's Perfect swaps positions with Camila Cabello's Havana (feat. Young Thug), which secures its seventh week at the summit overall with 641 airings for its promotional clip - its highest tally for three weeks. It has top tallies of 93 plays on Chartshow Hits, 76 on Starz TV and 64 on Box Upfront.

Two songs enter the Top 10 of the TV airplay chart for the first time - Clean Bandit's I Miss You, which spent four weeks at No.11 before falling to No.14 last week, now surges to No.8, becoming their sixth Top 10 entry; while Pink's Beautiful Trauma, which previously got as high as No.17, jumps 20-10.

Airplay Analysis: Perfect stays at No.1 on radio chart for another week

by Alan Jones

Ed Sheeran's Perfect tops the radio airplay chart for the eighth time in nine weeks, with plays up 4.69% week-on-week from 6,756 to 7,073 plays but audience down 3.05% from 80.64m to 78.18m. It continues to struggle at Radio 1, where it was aired just twice, but remains hugely popular almost everywhere else, with top tallies of 82 plays at The Hits and 73 plays from four Capital Network stations.

Rita Ora's Anywhere remains at No.2 for the fifth week in a row, with its best yet tally of 6,604 plays garnering an audience of 62.12m.

Meanwhile, there are dramatic gains for James Arthur's Naked and Craig David's I Know You (feat. Bastille).

Naked originally peaked four weeks ago at No.22, then dropped to No.41 but has since effected a great turnaround, jumping 35-15-3 in the last fortnight. In the latest frame, Naked increased plays by 23.65% from 2,655 to 3,283, and audience by 73.18% from 34.39m to 60.51m. Arthur's sixth Top 10 airplay hit, Naked has top tallies of 47 plays from Scottish Sun Hits and 43 apiece from Pulse, Signal and Wave but received 61.81% of its audience from big increases in exposure at Radio 1 (up from 13 plays to 24) and Radio 2 (up from four plays to 16).

Making an even bigger leap to become his highest charting radio airplay hit of the 2010s, Craig David's I Know You collaboration with Bastille catapults 24-4 with plays up 16.68% from 2,266 to 2,644 and audience up 91.61% from 28.97m to 55.51m. It was also indebted to the Beeb's big two, with Radio 1 exposure up from eight plays to 25, and Radio Two from five to 15.

Camila Cabello's Havana (feat. Young Thug) has spent seven of the last nine weeks at No.1 on the TV airplay chart but with her new single Never Be The Same hurtling 1031-62 on the chart, with 119 plays, Havana suffered enough of a downturn in support to be knocked off the summit by Rita Ora's Anywhere. Assuming the mantle for the first time on its 10th straight week in the top three, Anywhere secured a best-yet tally of 674 plays on TV last week, with 88 plays on Chartshow Hits, 80 plays on Starz TV and 72 plays on Capital TV.

Airplay Analysis: Perfect triumphs in tight race for No.1

by Alan Jones

In the closest top three for over a year, there is no change at the top of the radio airplay chart, with Ed Sheeran's Perfect hanging on to secure its ninth week at the summit, but Rita Ora's Anywhere, on its sixth straight week at No.2, is now just 0.73% in arrears, while Craig David's I Know You (feat. Bastille) is gaining on both fast and moves 4-3, with an audience just 2.90% smaller than Perfect.

Sheeran's audience for Perfect showed significant slippage, falling 18,89% week-on-week from 78.18m to 63.41m, while its plays were off 2.67% from 7,073 to 6,884. The main cause of its decline was a cooling of interest at Radio 2, where it went from 11 plays in the previous frame to two in the latest, losing more than 14m listeners along the way.

Two songs make big leaps to secure their Top 10 debuts. Liam Payne & Rita Ora's For You jumps 33-8, with plays increasing 47.65% from 1,727 to 2,550, driving the track's audience up 77.69%, from 25.68m to 45.63m. Despite this, it is leapfrogged by Bruno Mars' new smash Finesse, which catapults 38-4, with plays surging 104.04% from 1,212 to 2,473, and audience rocketing 154.98% from 20.70m to 52.78m. Finesse is Mars’ 13th radio airplay chart Top 10 entry, and the first for featured rapper Cardi B.

Finesse makes an even more spectacular 34-1 leap on the TV airplay chart, where its promotional clip secured 705 plays in the week, a 188.93% jump over the previous week, and 11.73% more than the 631 spins given to Rita Ora's Anywhere, which dips 1-2. Finesse secured top tallies of 94 plays on Capital TV, 61 plays on Chart Show TV and 60 plays on Starz TV, and earns Mars his fifth TV airplay chart No.1.

After debuting last week at No.25, Justin Timberlake's Filthy jumps to No.5, with its promotional clip's exposure more than doubling from 293 plays to 590. It coincides with an almost equally large 15-32 move in the opposite direction on the radio airplay chart and a 15-28 slide on the OCC sales chart for the track.

Airplay Analysis

by Alan Jones

The Top 3 tracks on last week’s radio airplay chart were closer than they have been for more than a year, with the No.1 title securing an audience that was
a mere 2.90% bigger than the No.3 title. This week, none of the three is No.1, as Bruno Mars’ Finesse (feat. Cardi B) leapfrogs 4-1 a week after vaulting 34-1 on the TV airplay chart.

Finesse is Mars’ seventh radio airplay chart No.1 following Grenade, The Lazy Song, Locked Out Of Heaven, When I Was Your Man, Uptown Funk (with Mark
Ronson) and 24K Magic. It secured a 32.64% increase in plays from 2,475 to 3,283 in the week, while growing its audience by 28.04% from 52.78m to 67.58m.
It had top tallies of 66 plays at Kiss Fresh, 65 plays at Scottish Sun Hits and 64 plays at Kiss’ London, Bristol and Cambridge franchises but the key contributors to
Finesse’s surge were BBC Radio 1 - where it went from 14 plays to 26, topping the most-played list alongside Jason Derulo’s Tip Toe - and Radio 2, where it went from 12 to 15 plays, moving to third on the most-played list.

Mars’ leap leaves Rita Ora’s Anywhere at No.2 for the seventh straight week. Meanwhile, there are two new arrivals in the Top 10: River by Eminem (feat. Ed Sheeran) jumps 12-7 and Camila Cabello’s Never Be The Same rises 17-9. With programmers presumably taking note of its OCC chart coronation, River finally arrived in the Top 10, with plays increasing 16.33% week-on-week from 2,401 to 2,793, and audience up 9.09% from 41.81m to 45.61m. 24 plays on Radio
1 provided 29.36% of its audience and it had a top tally of 67 plays at four Capital Network stations.

Airplay analysis: Bruno Mars increases lead at radio and TV summits

by Alan Jones

Bruno Mars' seventh No.1 on the radio airplay chart and his fifth on the TV airplay chart, Finesse (feat. Cardi B) leads both charts for a second week with increased majorities.

On the radio, Finesse increases plays week-on-week by 21.66% from 3,283 to 3,994, while upping its audience by 11.16% from 67.58m to 75.12m. It has an unchanged tally of 26 plays at Radio 1 but dips 1-2 on the station's most played list, overtaken by Jax Jones' Breathe. It more than makes up for that by increasing from 15 to 19 plays at Radio 2, where nothing else was aired more than 17 times. The two stations provided a combined 1.13% of Finesse's plays but 52.58% of its audience.

Elsewhere in the radio airplay Top 10, Ed Sheeran's Perfect bounces 3-2 on falling support, while Rita Ora's Anywhere, which was stuck at No.2 for seven weeks, eases to No.4.

There was one place between Camilla Cabello's Havana (feat. Young Thug) and follow-up Never The Same last week but now there are 30, with the latter disc surging 9-3 with plays up 43.40% from 2,774 to 3,978, and audience up 28.98% from 44.93m to 57.95m. It is stealing support from Havana, which slumps 8-33 as a result.

James Arthur's Naked leaps 14-6 and Pink's Beautiful Trauma advances 20-10 arresting declines. Both have previously been as high as No.3 and their turnaround is due almost entirely to a big increase in support from the Heart Network. Naked was aired by the group a total of 1,133 times last week compared to 387 times in the previous frame, with individual stations upping support from a range of 15-19 to a range of 42-46. By the same token, Beautiful Trauma rocketed from 125 plays to 897 at Heart, with 35-37 plays on the Network's stations, compared to just 4-6 the week before.

The one real newcomer to the Top 10 is Dua Lipa's IDGAF, which advances 32-9 to become her fourth Top 10 entry, with plays up 45.81% from 1,574 to 2,295 and audience 85.70% from 24.48m to 45.46m.

IDGAF also catapults 18-7 on the TV airplay chart where the aforementioned Finesse increased its lead over Rita Ora's Anywhere – No.2 for the seventh time in 12 weeks – from 71 plays to a massive 141. Of the 779 airings that Finesse received, it had top tallies of 94 at Capital TV, 92 at Chartshow Hits and 73 at The Box.

Airplay analysis: Bruno Mars makes it three weeks at airplay summit

by Alan Jones
February 9th 2018

With double digit growth on plays and audience for the fifth week in a row, Bruno Mars' Finesse (feat. Cardi B) lengthens its lead at the top of the radio airplay chart. Topping the list for the third time, Finesse increased plays by 27.20% from 4,026 to 5,121, and grew its audience by 16.72% from 75.31m to 87.90m - the highest for any track for seven weeks.

Support for Finesse eased slightly at both Radio 1 (from 26 plays to 25) and Radio 2 (from 19 plays to 18) although its audience from both stations increased slightly. It had top tallies of 80 plays from The Hits and 73 apiece from Wave, Signal, Pulse and Scottish Sun Hits.

Rita Ora spent eight weeks at No.2 with Anywhere, which finally retreated to a lower orbit a fortnight ago – but Ora is back in runner-up position, this time with Liam Payne duet For You, which increases plays by 10.45% from 3,053 to 3,372 and audience by 28.23% from 48.92m to 62.73m. A massive 30.01m of that total – 47.84% - comes from 20 plays at Radio 2, where For You shares most-played honours with Kylie Minogue's Dancing.

Rudimental secure their fourth Top 10 entry with Jess Glynne collaboration These Days dashing 18-9, with plays surging 98.95% from 1,330 to 2,646, and audience by 26.95% from 35.66m to 45.27m. Most of that growth is due to the Capital Network, where support from the 12 stations more than tripled from 200 to 617 plays, with audience from the group growing an even more spectacular 230% from 3.70m to 12.32m.

God’s Plan by Drake spends its third week at No.1 on the OCC chart – but radio and TV are still catching up. The track jumps 31-21 on radio airplay and 86-32 on TV airplay. Although it is massively more popular than any other track on streaming platforms, radio stations still haven't committed to it in the same way – it was the 38th most-played song last week, with 1,467 airings, a 29.25% increase over the prior frame. This week 44.48% of its audience derived from one station – Radio 1, which upped support of the track from 24 plays to 32, the most exposure it has accorded to any track since Calvin Harris’ Slide (feat. Frank Ocean & Migos) was also played 32 times some 47 weeks ago, last March.

While its lead atop the radio airplay chart grows, Bruno Mars’ Finesse is flagging a little at the top of the TV airplay chart, with plays down 9.11% from 779 to 708, and top tallies of 101 plays at Capital TV, 87 plays at Chartshow Hits and 73 at The Box.

Airplay analysis: Rudimental's These Days soars to radio summit

by Alan Jones

After five straight weeks of fast growth and three weeks at No.1 on the radio airplay chart, Bruno Mars' Finesse (feat. Cardi B) loses its footing dramatically, shedding almost a third of its audience as it slides to No.4.

Camila Cabello's Never Be The Same and Liam Payne & Rita Ora's For You grow their audiences by 12.93% and 13.01% but are unmoved at No.3 and No.2 respectively, as Rudimental's These Days (feat. Jess Glynne, Macklemore & Dan Caplen) storms 9-1.

Rudimental's second radio airplay chart No.1 - their James Arthur collaboration Sun Comes Up spent three weeks at No.1 last August - These Days saw a 30.61% increase in plays from 2,646 to 3,456 generating a massive 66.93% surge in audience from 45.27m to 75.57m. It enjoyed dramatic improvements in exposure at Radio 1 (from eight plays to 26) and Radio 2 (from seven plays to 15) and had top tallies of 72 plays at The Hits and 71 plays at eight Capital Network stations.

Meanwhile, there are two new entries to the Top 10: Jax Jones' Breathe (feat. Ina Wroldsen) jumps to No.5 after pausing for a fortnight at No.11, while Portugal The Man's Feel It Still leaps 14-6.

Breathe is Jax Jones' third Top 10 hit (Wrolden's first), and secured an 8.24% increase in plays from 3,300 to 3,572, and a 29.65% increase in audience from 44.65m to 57.98m. Portugal The Man's first hit, Feel It Still – which achieved its first UK play way back on 22 March 2017 on Radio X, which is also by far its biggest supporter to date with 658 spins – increased plays by 31.82% from 2,973 to 3,919, and audience by 25.07% from 42.76m to 53.48m.

Although it loses its radio airplay crown, Bruno Mars' Finesse spends its fifth straight week atop the TV airplay chart, with airings of its promotional clip easing from 708 to 691. Still at No.2, Ramz's Barking also suffered a small dip, from 642 plays to 637 – but new radio airplay chart toppers Rudimental's These Days also makes dramatic progress on the TV airplay chart, vaulting 18-3 with plays up 44.27% from 436 to 629.
