Airplay analysis: Rita Ora and Liam Payne topple Rudimental from chart summit

by Alan Jones

Rita Ora has spent 10 of the last 11 weeks at No.2 on the radio airplay chart, with solo hit Anywhere spending eight weeks in runners-up position and Liam Payne duet For You two - but the latter disc jumps to No.1 this week, swapping places with Rudimental's These Days (feat. Jess Glynne, Macklemore & Dan Caplen) which stormed 9-1 last week and looked to be set for a long run at the summit.

Instead, For You secures a surprisingly comfortable victory, with a 31.77% increase in plays from 4,089 to 5,388 driving an 18.80% expansion of its audience from 70.89 million to 84.22m. The 12 stations in the Capital Network are its biggest supporters, with plays from all in the 80-76 range last week, compared to the 63-55 range in the previous frame. Its biggest audience came from Radio 2, where it earned 21.42% of its audience from 11 plays.

For You is Ora's third airplay No.1, following How We Do (Party) in 2012 and 2017's Your Song. Surprisingly, it is only Payne's second No.1 – his first came as a member of One Direction, whose Story Of My Life topped in 2013. Payne is the first Directioneer to have a No.1 outside the band – Harry Styles' biggest hit got to No.2, Niall Horan's to No.3, Zayn's to No.5 and Louis Tomlinson's to No.13.

It is nearly two years since Justin Timberlake's Can't Stop The Feeling! achieved the rare distinction of debuting atop the radio airplay chart. It was a position it didn't relinquish for 11 weeks – but Timberlake hasn't been in the Top 10 again until now. His new hit, Say Something – a collaboration with country star Chris Stapleton – reversed 17-28 last week but now surges to No.9, with a 10.95% hike in plays from 2,173 to 2,411 and a 58.19% increase in audience from 28.13m to 44.50m. Say Something is from Timberlake's fifth solo album Man Of The Woods, and is a quickfire follow-up to Filthy, which debuted and peaked six weeks ago at No.15.

Also new to the Top 10 is the Marshmello & Anne-Marie collaboration Friends, which debuted last week at No.36 and now leaps to No.10, with plays up 85.77% from 1,75 to 1,997, and audience by a similar 84.54% from 23.87m to 44.05m.

There is no change at the top of the TV airplay chart, where Bruno Mars' Finesse (feat. Cardi B) prevails for the sixth week in a row, slightly increasing its lead over Ramz's Barking. With 701 plays – 10 more than a week ago – Finesse has best tallies of 95 plays on Capital TV, 78 plays on Starz TV and 73 plays on Chartshow Hits.

Airplay analysis: Dua Lipa scores first No.1 radio hit

by Alan Jones

Dua Lipa lands her first No.1 radio airplay hit with IDGAF after a tense, three way tussle which saw former incumbents For You by Liam Payne & Rita Ora falling 1-3, and Rudimental's These Days holding at No.2.

Trailing throughout the week, IDGAF finally established a 2.45% bigger audience than For You, and a 2.89% advantage over These Days. It did so by increasing plays 14.35% from 3,833 to 4,383 and audience by 4.42% from 70.81 million to 73.94m as both of its main rivals faltered. With top tallies of 91 plays on Hits Radio and 80 plays on each of six Capital Network outlets, IDGAF secured 23 plays on Radio One and 12 plays on Radio Two, which provided a joint 47.98% of its audience.

That Dua Lipa has not previously topped the chart is a surprise – her last single, New Rules, spent a fortnight at the OCC apex last August but peaked at No.4 on the radio airplay chart.

George Ezra has the only new entry to the Top 10 with Paradise – the introductory single from his upcoming second album, Staying At Tamara's – leaping 26-10. Much of its impetus came from topping Radio 2's most played list with 20 airings in the week providing 63.35% of its audience, while 15 spins at Radio 1 chipped in a further 16.56%. Overall, it increased plays by 22.15% from 1,589 to 1,941, while growing its audience by 58.18% from 28.67m to 45.35m. Paradise is Ezra's fifth Top 10 entry on the radio airplay chart, following Budapest (No.6), Blame It On Me (No.5), Cassy O (No.7) and Don't Matter Now (No.8). The last two did extraordinarily well compared to their OCC peaks, which were No.70 for Cassy O and No.66 for Don't Matter Now.

Five weeks after topping the OCC chart, Eminem's River (feat. Ed Sheeran) surges 10-1 on the TV airplay chart. Increasing plays from 512 to 716 – 39.84% – River had top tallies of 91 plays from Capital TV, 86 plays from Chartshow TV and 73 plays from both The Box and Box Upfront. River is Eminem's first radio airplay No.1 since 2010 Rihanna collaboration, Love The Way You Lie, and Sheeran's fifth No.1.

Airplay analysis: Portugal The Man reach radio summit after 12 months

by Alan Jones

First played on UK radio on 22 March 2017, when Radio X aired it at 10.05pm, Feel It Still by Portugal The Man completes its long and winding road to the top of the radio airplay chart this week. It didn't really take off until December, however, and its coronation is remarkable both for the fact that it was becalmed at No.6 for the last three weeks, and by its narrow margin of victory - based on Radio Monitor's data its audience last week was less than 0.06% larger than that of Liam Payne & Rita Ora's For You, which bounces 3-2, having topped the chart a fortnight ago.

Feel It Still has increased its vital signs for 12 weeks in a row, registering 17.02% growth from 5,323 to 6,229 plays in the latest frame, while securing a 30.39% hike in audience from 54.98m to 71.69m. It had top tallies of 81 plays at The Hits, 77 plays at 100% Dragon Hits and 72 plays at four other stations. 24 plays on Radio 1 and three on Radio 2 provided much of the thrust that pushed it to No.1, while it received a further 16 plays from its first supporter, Radio X, which has still aired it far more times than any other station - 708.

George Ezra's Paradise achieves the rare accolade of simultaneously topping the most-played lists at both Radio 1 and Radio 2, with 27 plays on the former and 18 on the latter, helping it to climb 10-7 on the overall radio airplay chart.

Two songs make their Top 10 debut – Bebe Rexha's Meant To Be (feat. Florida Georgia Line) charges 73-8, while Mabel's Fine Line (feat. Not3s) makes a less dramatic 13-10 advance.

Meant To Be's surge is as a result of dramatic growth, with plays climbing 125.21% from 960 to 2,162, while its audience surges 453.66% from 9.28m to 51.38m. It has top tallies of 46 plays at 21 Heart franchises but secured 53.78% of its audience from Radio Two, where it went from one play to 16.

God's Plan by Drake peaked at No.20 on the radio airplay chart three weeks ago but climbs 2-1 on the TV airplay chart with 679 plays. It had top tallies of 77 plays on Capital TV, 74 on MTV Hits and 69 on The Box.

Great achievement.

Belated bit of March 2nd chart info from Haven (i thought you'd let the thread drop so didn't bother updating):

51-100
51 52 Taylor Swift
52 ne B Young – Jumanji
53 ne Demi Lovato – Tell me you love me
54 58 Sean Paul
60 ne Fratellis – Starcrossed lovers
69 ne Rae Morris – Someone out there
70 ne Chvrches – Get out
72 ne Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey – The middle
73 91 Bebe Rexha
74 80 UB40
76 ne Superorganism - Everybody wants to be famous
77 ne Janelle Monae – Make me feel
83 re Toto – Africa
85 re Spice Girls – Wannabe
96 ne Khalid – Location
Care of http://www.ukchartsplus.co.uk

Rae Morris returns to Radio 2 playlist for first time since debut album and enters 100. Shame it's one of the less interesting ballads but at least her reach is higher. R2 should have backed her poppier songs alongside R1.

Next bottom half update on Tuesday.

Yes, Haven poster is being intentionally vague on climbers i think for copyright reasons - though Lonnie has given them permission to use ChartsPlus info.
In this case of course there are 2 versions of UB40 in existence though the other one (Robin Campbell's lot) is getting far less media attention.

As you will appreciate their is a copyright notice on ChartsPlus and so we don’t want everything being posted as nobody would buy it! I do not mind selected entries getting a full title and artist credit. Just don’t post the entire Top 200!

^ I'll amend the UB40 credit though for the reasons i stated. Robin Campbell might object. It's not a normal "featuring", it's a legal situation.

by Alan Jones

Runner-up on the OCC chart for the sixth week in a row, Rudimental's These Days (feat. Jess Glynne, Macklemore & Dan Caplen) simultaneously jumps 3-1 on the radio airplay chart and 6-1 on the TV airplay chart.

It is the track's first visit to the TV chart summit but its second to the radio apex, having first achieved pole position four weeks ago. Its return is facilitated by an increase of 5.82% in plays from 6,377 to 6,743, and an 8.32% rise in audience from 69.35m to 75.12m. Twenty-five plays on Radio 1 provided 17.94% of its audience, and it had top tallies of 90 plays at The Hits and 79 plays at three Capital Network franchises.

It is the fifth week in a row that leadership of the chart has changed - a rare occurrence - but there's little else happening in the Top 10 with new peaks for Bebe Rexha's Meant To Be (feat. Florida Georgia Line, 8-6) and Mabel's Fine Line (feat. Not3s, 10-9), and one new arrival in the Top 10, namely Lullaby by Sigala x Paloma Faith.

Lullaby jumps 20-10 with plays increasing 16.15% from 2,390 to 2,776, and audience expanding 58.29% from 28.65m to 45.35m. Much of its larger audience is down to Radio 2, where the track went from two to 11 plays, while support on Radio 1 dwindled from nine to six spins. With a top tally of 61 plays from five Capital Network stations, it provides both Sigala and Faith with their sixth Top 10 entries.

After jumping 10-7 last week, George Ezra's Paradise is static. The most-played song on both Radio 1 and Radio 2 in the previous frame, it continues to rule the roost at the latter – jointly with developing artist Albin Lee Meldau's The Weight Is Gone – but is overtaken by 13 songs at Radio 1. Its failure to climb is due to a 0.49% dip in audience, even though it enjoys a 16.51% expansion in plays from 2,719 to 3,168.

As mentioned above, These Days is No.1 on the TV airplay chart, making a five-place jump to the summit after previously falling 3-4-5-6. Its victory could barely have been narrower – it was aired 658 times, once more than God's Plan by Drake, which dips to No.2. These Days is Dan Caplen's first No.1 on the chart, Rudimental and Macklemore's second and Glynne's sixth.

Airplay analysis: Radio resurgence for Portugal The Man

by Alan Jones

Leadership of the radio airplay chart changes for the sixth week in a row, with Rudimental’s These Days (feat. Jess Glynne, Macklemore & Dan Caplen) retreating to No.2, allowing Portugal The Man’s Feel It Still to return to the summit.

Previously No.1 a fortnight ago, Feel It Still increases plays for the 14th week in a row. Rising 1.44% from 6,595 to 6,690, they drive a more significant 7.84% rise in listenership from 69.81m to 75.28m. Most of its audience growth, remarkably, came from Radio 2, where exposure of the track increased from one play to two but earned it an audience of 4.67m, compared to 0.22m the previous week. Radio 1 exposure remained unchanged (24 plays), while the track had top tallies of 91 plays on The Hits, 75 plays at 100% Dragon Hits and 74 plays at five other stations.

Bruno Mars’ Finesse (feat. Cardi B) resumes its Top 10 career after a break of two weeks, rallying 13-10 eight weeks after topping the list, while there are new peaks within the Top 10 for Mabel’s Fine Line (feat. Not3s, 9-8) and Bebe Rexha & Florida Georgia Line’s Meant To Be (6-5) – but both are leapfrogged by Lullaby, the Sigala x Paloma Faith hit which surges 10-4, delivering Sigala’s fourth top five entry and Faith’s third.

Lullaby’s advance was attended by an increase of 23.63% in plays from 2,776 to 3,432, while its audience rose by 33.85% from 45.35m to 60.70m. It derived most of its extra reach via increases from 11 to 18 plays on Radio 2 and from six to 12 plays on Radio 1. It shares most-played status on Radio 2 with Kylie Minogue’s new single, Stop Me From Falling, which surges 73-20 on the radio airplay chart as a result, to come within one place of predecessor Dancing’s No.19 peak.

As on the radio airplay chart, Rudimental’s These Days is toppled from the TV airplay chart by a returnee. God’s Plan by Drake is the track in question, and like everything else in the Top 10, it increases exposure week-on-week, with plays up 8.52% from 657 to 713. It has top tallies of 92 plays at Chartshow Hits, 78 at Chart Show TV and 76 at MTV Hits.

There's been no Airplay Analysis report posted this week, presumably because of the Easter weekend. If it does appear at musicweek.com I'll post it here.

Airplay analysis: Sigala and Paloma Faith displace Rudimental on radio chart

by Alan Jones

Sigala and Paloma Faith both secure their first No.1 on the radio airplay chart, with their collaboration Lullaby completing a 33-20-10-4-3-1 ascent.

Sigala’s previous highest charting track was his 2015 debut Easy Love, which peaked at No.2, while Faith’s previous best placing came last year, when Crybaby reached No.3.

With an audience of 70m from 4,199 plays, Lullaby takes advantage of a fall in support for Portugal The Man’s Feel It Still, which ends its second run at the summit by sliding to No.4. BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 each aired Lullaby 17 times, and provided slightly more than half of its audience as a result. That’s enough for it to be clear leader of Radio 2’s most-played list, with three more airings than nearest challenger Charlie Puth’s Done For Me (feat. Kehlani). Three songs had more plays at Radio 1, where the top total was a modest 22 for B. Young’s Jumanji. Elsewhere, Lullaby had a top tally of 78 plays at The Hits, followed by 70 plays from Pulse, Signal, Wave and Scottish Sun Hits.

There are new peaks within the Top 10 for Bebe Rexha & Florida Georgia Line’s Meant To Be (4-3) and the aforementioned Done For Me (9-7) but the only new arrival in the top tier is Sanctify, which climbs 13-10 to become the sixth Top 10 hit for Years & Years. It enjoys a 17.88% expansion in plays from 2,002 to 2,360, and more modest 4.57% growth in audience from 39.20m to 40.99m. It was played 17 times on Radio 1 and 10 times on Radio 2.

With special Easter programming taking its toll, every track in the Top 10 of the TV airplay chart suffered a downturn in plays. Rudimental’s These Days took a smaller hit than any other record in the Top 5, and is No.1 for the third time in four weeks, with support falling 4.56% week-on-week to 652 plays, and top tallies of 79 plays at Capital TV, 76 plays at Starz TV and 65 plays at The Box.
