Once again, the debut section is stacked in this week’s edition of MBN. There’s 17 albums, same as last week, with the usual smattering of knowns and unknowns. If you follow the column New & Noteworthy (and you should), you’ll see that the debut section will continue to be occupied into the foreseeable future. In the coming weeks, you’ll see the likes of Judas Priest, Between The Buried and Me, The Sword, and many others taking up your screen.

Billboard 200 Chart Moves: Luke Bryan, Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine & Blake Shelton Gain in Wake of 'Voice' & 'American Idol' Promo
https://www.billboard.com/articles/colu ... dam-levine
3/7/2018 by Keith Caulfield

On the latest Billboard 200 albums chart (dated March 10), Bon Jovi’s This House Is Not for Sale returned to No. 1, while 6ix9ine and Vance Joy both debuted in the top 10 with their newest efforts.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the week’s most popular albums based on their overall consumption. That overall unit figure combines pure album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the action on the rest of the Billboard 200:

— Luke Bryan, What Makes You Country – No. 30 — Luke Bryan, one of the three judges on the revived American Idol, shifts 49-30 with his latest album, What Makes You Country (14,000 units earned in the week ending March 1, according to Nielsen Music; up 33 percent). The set likely benefits from promotion surrounding Idol's return to TV on ABC, following its 15-year run on Fox (2002-2016). Bryan also returns to the chart with Crash My Party at No. 191 (5,000 units; up 10 percent). The other two judges on ABC TV’s rebooted Idol — Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — are not on the chart. The relaunched Idol premieres on March 11.

— Kelly Clarkson, Meaning of Life – No. 163 — Kelly Clarkson’s Meaning of Life jumps back onto the list with 5,000 units (up 30 percent), amid her publicity tour in support of her debut as a coach on NBC’s The Voice. The new season of the reality competition series premiered on Feb. 26. Two of her fellow Voice coaches, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, also see gains on the chart. Levine’s band Maroon 5 notches a 4 percent unit increase with Red Pill Blues (holding at No. 34; 14,000 units) while Shelton’s Texoma Shore reenters the list at No. 175 with a 20 percent lift (to 5,000 units). The fourth Voice coach, Alicia Keys, is not currently on the chart.

— The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band – No. 69 — The Beatles’ former No. 1 Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band scores its best sales week outside of the Christmas season since the week ending July 20, 2017, as the set re-enters the Billboard 200 at No. 69 with 6,000 copies sold in the week ending March 1 (of its 8,000 equivalent album units earned in the week). The album is up 37 percent in sales and 122 percent in units following a CBS Sunday Morning feature about the album on Feb 25.

— Daniel Caesar, Freudian – No. 85 — As Freudian’s single “Get You,” featuring Kali Uchis, continues to gain in popularity (23-20 on R&B Streaming Songs), the album climbs to its highest rank since Sept. 30 (No. 71) with 8,000 units (up 14 percent).

— The New Broadway Cast Recording, Once on This Island – No. 154 — The new Broadway cast recording of Once on This Island arrives at No. 161 on the Billboard 200, marking the first cast recording to debut on the list since last July. Once on This Island launches with 5,000 equivalent album units earned. Nearly all of that sum was driven by traditional album sales. The set also bows at No. 31 on Top Album Sales and No. 2 on Cast Albums. The last cast recording to hit the Billboard 200 was the original Broadway cast recording of Anastasia: The New Broadway Musical, which debuted at No. 56 on July 1, 2017. Anastasia was one of only four cast albums to bow on the tally in 2017, in addition to the original Broadway cast recordings of Dear Evan Hansen (peaking at No. 8), Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 (No. 87) and the Bette Midler-led new Broadway cast recording of Hello, Dolly! (No. 60).

Queen + Adam Lambert Lead Hot Tours Recap With Australian Shows
https://www.billboard.com/articles/colu ... -hot-tours
3/7/2018 by Bob Allen

With two performances at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena, Queen + Adam Lambert earns the top ranking on the latest weekly slate of Hot Tours (see list, below) with a $3.3 million gross. The band played the arena on Feb. 21 and 22, the second stop on a trek through Australia and New Zealand that recently wrapped on March 6. Produced by Melbourne-based promoter TEG Dainty, the Oceania leg of the group’s 2017-2018 tour covered six markets beginning with Auckland on Feb. 17 followed by the Sydney shows and dates in Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth.

The iconic band launched its tour last summer in North America, kicking off in Phoenix on June 23. The 25-city run continued through early August and grossed $30 million from more than 300,000 sold tickets at 26 concerts, according to sales figures reported by promoter Live Nation. A European leg through 23 cities followed in November and December, and Queen will return to the continent for a second leg this summer before its finale in Dublin on July 8.

The Hot Tours tally includes several other artists with appearances in Australian markets in recent weeks. Robbie Williams follows at No. 2 in the rankings with his own two-night stint at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney. The English pop star performed for 21,686 fans, logging more than $2.6 million in sales at the venue on Feb. 28 and March 1 during the Aussie leg of his Heavy Entertainment Show tour. Fall Out Boy lands at No 7 based on a March 2 performance at the Sydney arena attended by a crowd of 11,264.

Two other Sydney venues also impact this recap of Hot Tours beginning with Hordern Pavilion that hosted Macklemore, ranked fourth based on a three-show gross of $1.1 million. The Seattle-born artist performed at the arena during February as part of his Gemini trek. Finally, an orchestral tour – Star Wars: A New Hope – Live In Concert – takes the No. 6 slot on the recap with two performances at the ICC Theatre in Sydney on Feb. 16 and 17.

Bon Jovi Returns to No. 1 on Billboard Artist 100
https://www.billboard.com/articles/colu ... artist-100
3/7/2018 by Xander Zellner

Plus, 6ix9ine reaches a new peak & Grey earns the chart's highest debut.

Bon Jovi re-enters the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated March 10) at No. 1 for a second total week on top, as the group's 2016 album This House Is Not for Sale concurrently returns at No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

The LP re-enters atop the Billboard 200 with 120,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending March 1, according to Nielsen Music. Essentially all of its sum is traditional album sales. The surge back to No. 1 is owed nearly entirely to sales generated by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer accompanying Bon Jovi's upcoming U.S. arena tour.

The Artist 100, which launched in July 2014, measures artist activity across key metrics of music consumption, blending album and track sales, radio airplay, streaming and social media fan interaction to provide a weekly multi-dimensional ranking of artist popularity.

Bon Jovi previously spent a week atop the Artist 100 when This House Is Not for Sale launched at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated Nov. 26, 2016.

Rounding out the Artist 100's top five, Ed Sheeran holds at No. 2, Post Malone powers 9-3, matching his peak, Drake falls to No. 4 from No. 1 (after 26 nonconsecutive weeks on top) and Imagine Dragons dip 4-5.

Among other Artist 100 moves, rapper 6ix9ine vaults from No. 60 to a new peak of No. 13 as his debut album DAY69 opens at No. 3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 4 on the Billboard 200 with 55,000 units. He also boasts five entries on the Billboard Hot 100, led by his breakthrough hit "Gummo" at No. 16.

Meanwhile, Grey earns the Artist 100's highest debut at No. 86, as the duo's "The Middle," with Zedd and Maren Morris, continues to scale the Hot 100, rising to No. 11. It leads Hot Dance/Electronic Songs for a fifth week.

Thanks for posting the charts, all.

I have no issues with albums attaining their position with concert/album redemptions. Then again, I follow and put more weight in the Album Sales chart vs. the multi-metric 200, as I.m not a fan of a chart ranking albums based on how the songs perform in ways that already contribute to the Hot 100. if the album format is on its way out, just consider Album Sales be the barometer of success and leave all that other stuff to the singles chart. When people stream a song or video, they are not actively purchasing something for that particular title- which has always between a factor in the singles chart, via radio play. Same goes for individual-track purchases, as they have contributed to the Hot 100. But this is another mater, so... :P

J-Hope of BTS Debuts at No. 3 on Emerging Artists Chart
https://www.billboard.com/articles/colu ... e-world-ep
3/8/2018 by Xander Zellner

Plus, Rich The Kid Holds at No. 1 & Blac Youngsta hits the top 10.
BTS member J-Hope (full name: Jung Ho-seok) makes his solo debut on Billboard's charts, as he bows at No. 3 on the Emerging Artists chart (dated March 10).

J-Hope's debut is powered by his first solo EP, Hope World, which arrives at No. 63 on the Billboard 200 with 9,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending March 1, according to Nielsen Music. Notably, he notches the highest rank ever for a solo K-pop artist on the Billboard 200; BTS, meanwhile, holds the overall record among K-pop acts, having hit No. 7 on Oct. 7, 2017, with Love Yourself: Her.

Of the opening-week unit sum for Hope World, 8,000 were in traditional album sales, sparking the set's launch at No. 1 on the sales-based World Albums chart.

J-Hope concurrently sends three tracks onto World Digital Song Sales, led by "Daydream" at No. 3.

The Emerging Artists chart uses the same formula as the all-encompassing Billboard Artist 100, which measures artist activity across multiple Billboard charts, including the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard 200 and the Social 50. However, the Emerging Artists chart excludes acts that have notched a top 25 entry on either the Hot 100 or Billboard 200, as well as artists that have achieved two or more top 10s on Billboard's "Hot" song genre charts and/or consumption-based "Top" album genre rankings.

J-Hope is the third member of BTS to reach the Emerging Artists chart. RM (full name: Kim Nam-joon) was the first, as he debuted and peaked at No. 46 on Jan. 3 on the strength of Fall Out Boy’s "Champion," on which he's featured. Agust D (who goes by Suga in BTS and whose full name is Min Yoon-gi) was the second, as he also debuted and peaked at No. 46 on the March 3-dated chart.

Rich The Kid leads the Emerging Artists chart for a second week, as his breakthrough single "New Freezer," featuring Kendrick Lamar, jumps 46-42 on the Billboard Hot 100 and holds at its No. 22 high on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. His "Plug Walk" also vaults from No. 69 to No. 55 on the Hot 100.

"Freezer" drew 18.2 million radio audience impressions (up 20 percent), 13.2 million U.S. streams (up 4 percent) and 5,000 downloads sold (up 4 percent) in the tracking week.

Rounding out the Emerging Artists' top five are country acts Devin Dawson (3-2), Jordan Davis (8-4) and Walker Hayes (2-5).

Among other Emerging Artists moves, Blac Youngsta vaults 29-6, entering the top 10 for the first time as his album 223 opens at No. 17 on Top Rap Albums, No. 22 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 42 on the Billboard 200 with 12,000 units. He also makes his Hot 100 debut with "Booty" at No. 81.

Passion, Michael W. Smith & Jekalyn Carr Debut on Christian & Gospel Charts
https://www.billboard.com/articles/colu ... spel-songs
3/8/2018 by Jim Asker

Passion earns its ninth Top Christian Albums No. 1 with 'Whole Heart.'
Passion's Whole Heart arrives at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Christian Albums chart (dated March 10) with 13,000 equivalent album units (12,000 via traditional sales) in the week ending March 1, according to Nielsen Music.

The set marks the ninth No. 1 for the worship collective (formerly known as Passion Worship Band), all of which have bowed at the summit. The act first led with Passion: Awakening on March 27, 2010.

The lead single from Heart, "Reckless Love," featuring Melodie Malone, debuts at No. 39 on Hot Christian Songs.

Michael W. Smith begins at No. 2 on Top Christian Albums with his live worship album Surrounded (5,000 units). That makes back-to-back No. 2 bows for Smith, whose A Million Lights opened (with 4,000 units) in the runner-up spot on the March 3 list.

Smith scores his 31st Top Christian Albums top 10, extending his mark for the most among soloists dating to his first week in the region (April 28, 1984); Amy Grant ranks second in that span with 29 top 10s.

Concurrently, the debuting album's "Surrounded (Fight My Battles)" enters the Hot Christian Songs top 40 (46-36).

On Top Gospel Albums, 20-year-old singer-songwriter Jekalyn Carr's One Nation Under God launches at No. 1 with a career-best 4,000 units (the bulk from traditional album sales). Carr collects her second No. 1, after her first live set, The Life Project, started atop the tally dated Aug. 27, 2016 (with 2,000 copies sold).

Carr's solo-penned "You Will Win," the first single from the new album, tops Gospel Airplay for a sixth week.

Imagine Dragons First Act to Hold Top Four Spots on Alternative Digital Song Sales
https://www.billboard.com/articles/colu ... song-sales
3/8/2018 by Kevin Rutherford

The band ranks at Nos. 1-4 on the digital download-based chart, led by "Thunder."
Imagine Dragons become the first act to monopolize the top four spots on Billboard's Alternative Digital Song Sales chart, ranking at Nos. 1-4 on the March 10-dated tally.

"Thunder" leads with 29,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen Music, in its 24th week at No. 1. Following are current radio single "Whatever It Takes" (26,000), "Next to Me" (13,000) and "Believer" (13,000).

All four songs also populate spots 1-4 on Rock Digital Song Sales, marking Imagine Dragons' first time with such a fourfold command and the third week the feat has occurred in the chart's history. Previously, Prince ruled the top four of the May 7- and 14, 2016-dated charts (and the top five of the latter), following his death that April 21.

In all, Imagine Dragons place six songs on Alternative Digital Song Sales, with 2012's "Radioactive" (No. 12; 4,000) and "Demons" (No. 18; 3,000) also making the list.

Meanwhile, "Whatever It Takes" spends its second week atop Billboard's Rock Airplay chart, with 12.1 million audience impressions (up 16 percent as the chart's Greatest Gainer).

Imagine Dragons' sales feat follows the rerelease of 2017's Evolve, which added "Next" to its tracklist (and also houses "Thunder," "Takes" and "Believer"); the LP concurrently lifts 13-8 on the Billboard 200 with 31,000 equivalent album units (up 32 percent) and spends a 22nd nonconsecutive week at No. 1 on the Alternative Albums chart.
