Some big hits that are missing (and it simply HAS to be due to the fact that the charts were not based on actual sales until 1993).

Duran Duran - Is There Something I Should Know
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)
Michael Jackson - Beat It
Nena - 99 Luftballons
Bananarama - Cruel Summer
Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton - Island In The Stream
Men At Work - Down Under
Pointer Sisters - I'm So Excited (even Jump doesn't chart either!)
Paul Young - Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)
Spandau Ballet - True (Spandau Ballet NEVER chart!)

Oh, well. Still fun looking at these charts and I hope you enjoy going through these strange listings too.

Next up: 1984.

Since it might be a while before I get there here are Kylie Minogues chart positions in 1988 and 1989 (and one in 1990).

First charted-Title-Peak-Weeks
11.03.88 I Should Be So Lucky 4 10
03.06.88 Got To Be Certain 7 9
02.09.88 The Loco-Motion 5 8
18.11.88 Je Ne Sais Pas Pourqoui 11 3
06.01.89 Especially For You 4 13
(Kylie Minogue & Jason Donovan)
12.05.89 Hand On Your Heart 4 9
04.08.89 Wouldn't Change A Thing 4 6
20.07.90 Better The Devil You Know 6 6

I think her first three hits would have charted higher in a consumer chart. Take a look at the charts for Nordjylland (northern part of Denmark) compiled by the radio station I work at. She had three number ones.

Jan, I don't think you should be surprised at Duran's lack of hits - they really became big worldwide only by the end of 1983. Before that they mainly were the UK/Australasia sensation, later broke in North America and only after that - in Europe in a big way.

Spandau's lack of hits isn't surprising, really. In Scandinavian countries they were an albums band, with only a couple of hits for Sweden, Norway and Finland overall. They were big in West Germany, Switzerland and Benelux, but not France or Austria. In the South of Europe, they had huge success in Italy and Spain (but not Portugal, strangely). So a really spotty history - and they also had big hits in parts of Europe only between 1983 and 1986. In fact they were more of an albums band.

What is strange is why Men at Work didn't chart. "Down Under" has been a huge hit in Scandinavia and Germany and even with the shipment-based chart they should've at least get a look-in. The same with Nena - another puzzling omission.

Paul Young also broke in Europe with "Come Back & Stay", not "Wherever I Lay My Hat", which is only his biggest UK hit but not much of one anywhere else.

Official Danish Singles Chart 1984, August (Source: BT/IFPI)

- Kim Larsen enters with the only single from album "Midt Om Natten" which also serves as the soundtrack to the movie of the same name. The album sells 650.000 copies which to this date still is the Danish record. I guess you can say people buy the album and not so much the singles. (Although this is not a sales chart).
- Wham! and Laura Branigan split the month atop the chart.
- Raf enter with the original (?) version of Laura Branigan's huge hit.
