The Almost Complete List of Irish No 1s

I originally posted this on Dotmusic but this is the updated list. I'll post 1 decade a day so we should be up to date by Friday. Like the 80s archive this data originates in a file sent to me by Dotmusic member beatlened. The info up to the end of 1983 is taken from a book which was published in 1985 similar to the Guinness Hit Singles books and was typed up by beatlened. The 85-88 stuff was from another spreadsheet which he typed up (I presume) from his paper copies. Anything post 88 is transcribed from my own paper copies which I have taken constantly from the Irish Chart Show on the national radio station 2FM. To start with I'm going to copy & paste everything from my original list. There may be a couple of minor corrections to be made but I'll do those at the end.

The first chart was compiled in October 1962 and the first number 1 was Elvis with She's Not You. Ironically that song appeared on the album which was topping the Irish album chart exactly 40 years later.

Thanks Shakyfan! It's interesting to see that there used to be joint no.1's in Ireland in '86.

I think that the joint number 1 was a special case because of the fact that Self Aid was for charity - the concert was an Irish version of Live Aid and was an attempt to create jobs.

1990

07 Jan to 30 Jun >> missing
06 Jul Irish World Cup Squad - Put Em Under Pressure
08 Sep Bombalurina - Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini

21,28 Oct 02,09 Nov missing but fairly sure that Saw Dòctors were number 1

15 Dec Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby
22 Dec Zig & Zag - Christmas No 1

1991
26 Jan Enigma - Sadness Part 1

31 Nov Zig & Zag - Zig Zaggin'
07 Dec Michael Jackson - Black Or White
14 Dec Zig & Zag - Zig Zaggin'
21 Dec U2 - Mysterious Ways
28 Dec Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody

1992

Queen were number 1 throughout January. There were no charts announced on radio due to a strike for weeks 01 Feb 08 Feb 15 Feb 22 Feb. On the chart of 25th January Goodnight Girl climbed from 29 to 3 so presumably it went to number 1 on 01 February. The next chart to be broadcast was that of 29th Feb which had Wet Wet Wet staying at number 1. It is therefore assumed that the list for the start of the year should read

04 Jan Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
11 Jan Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
18 Jan Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
25 Jan Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
01 Feb Wet Wet Wet - Goodnight Girl
08 Feb Wet Wet Wet - Goodnight Girl
15 Feb Wet Wet Wet - Goodnight Girl
22 Feb Wet Wet Wet - Goodnight Girl
29 Feb Wet Wet Wet - Goodnight Girl
07 Mar Shakespears Sister - Stay
14 Mar U2 - One

21 Mar 28 Mar 04 Apr 11 Apr charts missing

18 Apr Shakespears Sister - Stay (presumably it went back to number 1 for the 4 missing weeks)
09 May Right Said Fred - Deeply Dippy

OK this is where it gets (more) confusing! Until now the charts were compiled by an unknown source. The chart announced on Sunday 31 May (w/e 06 Jun) was compiled by Gallup who at the time were also responsible for the official UK chart. During the chart rundown the "last week"
positions used were those of the test chart from Gallup. So for example on the chart show rundown for the chart for w.e 06 Jun the Top 05 was

01 (02) Guns n Roses Knockin' On Heavens Door
02 (01) Linda Martin - Why Me?
03 (13) Kriss Kross - Jump
04 (11) Cure - Friday I'm In Love
05 (03) KWS - Please Don't Go

However on the chart announced the previous week Right Said Fred were @ 1 Linda Martin @ 2 KWS @3 2 Unlimited @ 4 and SL2 @5. So assuming the last non-Gallup chart should be followed by the 1st announced chart Right Said Fred Were number 1 on 09 May, 16 May, 23 May and 30 May with Guns
N Roses moving to number 1 on 06 June. So Linda Martin may have won the Eurovision Song Contest but on the Irish chart she was denied on a technicality!

06 Jun Guns n Roses - Knockin' On Heavens Door
13 Jun Kriss Kross - Jump
20 Jun Erasure - Abbaesque (EP)
25 JUl Jimmy Nail - Ain't No Doubt
15 Aug Snap - Rhythmn Is A Dancer (8 wks)
10 Oct Shamen - Ebeneezer Goode

14 Nov Boyz II Men - End of The Road
05 Dec Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You

29 Aug Freddie Mercury - Living On My Own
05 Sep Culture Beat - Mr Vain
10 Oct Pet Shop Boys - Go West
17 Oct Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince - Boom Shake The Room
24 Oct Meat Loaf - I'd Do Anything For Love
05 Dec Bryan Adams - Please Forgive Me
12 Dec U2 - Stay // Bono & Frank Sinatra - I've Got You Under My Skin
25 Dec Take That - Babe

1994

22 Jan East 17 - It's Alright
29 Jan Rod Stewart, Bryan Adams & Sting - All For Love
19 Feb Enigma - Return To Innocence
26 Feb Mariah Carey - Without You
02 Apr Bruce Springsteen - Streets of Philadelphia
07 May Irish World Cup Squad - Watch Your House For Ireland
14 May Bill Whelan - Riverdance <18 weeks>

No - there aren't any gaps here this piece of music from the Eurovision Song Contest interval spent over 4 months on top. Stuck at number 2 behind it were Eurovision winners Paul Harrington & Charlie McGettigan - Rock n Roll Kids (1 week), Man Utd FC - Come On You Reds (4 weeks) AND Wet Wet Wet - Love Is All Around which spent 13 weeks as runner-up without ever reaching the top.

17 Sep Perez Prado - Guaglione
01 Oct Whigfield - Saturday Night
29 Oct Boyzone - Love Me For A Reason
05 Nov Whigfield - Saturday Night
12 Nov Bon Jovi - Always
26 Nov Dustin - Spanish Lady
24 Dec East 17 - Stay Another Day.

With Christmas in sight Dustin the Turkey dropped quickly falling from 1 to 11. He was replaced in the Top 10 by former "colleagues" Zig & Zag who arrived at number 8 with "Them Girls Them Girls"

26 Aug Blur - Country House

>> 5 weeks on top for Country House. Oasis could only manage to enter at 3 with Boyzone separating the two singles although Roll With It climbed to 2 in its 2nd week and stayed there 7 days later.

28 Sep OMC - How Bizarre
19 Oct Boyzone - Words
25 Nov Dustin & Bob Geldof - Rat Trap
14 Dec Prodigy - Breathe
28 Dec Spice Girls - 2 Become 1

The Wild Swans song was a track that had been recorded many years earlier (maybe even as far back as the 60s) and was reworded to tie in with the All Ireland Hurling final for that year. Man Utd Man was a tribute to the soccer squad and was written by the Saw Doctors.

The charts for most of the 90s have been given a w/e date of the Saturday following the day they were announced on the radio as when I was writing them out on paper I would always have used that date. This was fine when the chart show was on a Sunday but gets slightly confusing in the early 90s when it moved to Saturday.

Show on Sunday 1st July gets w/e date Sat 7th Jul

Show on Saturday 7th August gets w/e date Sat 14th August

My reason for doing this was that otherwise I would have either missed a number 1 somewhere or a single would have appeared to have spent a week less on top than it actually did.

To add to the confusion in May 1999 the chart show had a major revamp. After around a decade of being broadcast between midday and 2pm on Saturday it moved to a new time of 5pm on Friday.

Thank you Shakyfan very interesting! :D Does that mean so that "Why Me" by "Linda Martin" made no.2?

Next time I'll post this years chart toppers. After that I've got something else lined up - a list of every single to make the Irish chart between 1962 and 1983 along with peak positions.

Not much to add since there have only been 2 songs at no 1 since Will Young

29 January Kelis - Milkshake (5)
04 March Britney Spears - Toxic (2)

And I've managed to fill in the gaps for 1990. This is copied from the Dotmusic thread.

Update for 1990

I've just found a list which I wrote out at the beginning of 1991 which has all the chart toppers from 1990. This list ties in with what I posted earlier with the exception of Unchained Melody which went to no 1 a week earlier than I thought.

13 Jan Band Aid 2 - Do They Know Its Christmas? (2 weeks in 1990)
27 Jan New Kids On The Block - Hangin' Tough (1)
03 Feb Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U (6)
17 Mar B52s - Love Shack (1)
24 Mar V/a - Brits Dance Medley (1)
31 Mar Jive Bunny - That Sounds Good To Me (2)
14 Apr Mick Lally - Byeroad To Glenroe (5)
19 May Liam Harrison - Give It A Lash Jack (1)
26 May Memories - The Game (1)
02 Jun Liam Harrison - Give It A Lash Jack (1)
09 Jun Irish World Cup Squad - Put Em Under Pressure (13)
08 Sep Bombalurina - Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini (1)

29 Sep Saw Doctors - I Useta Lover (7)
17 Nov Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody (2)
01 Dec Watch Your House - Ooh Aah Paul McGrath (2)
15 Dec Vanilla Ice - Ice Ice Baby (1)
22 Dec Zig & Zag - Christmas No 1 (3)

It is indeed!! He had a couple of other hits over the next few years.

Frank Kelly who played Father Jack in the series had a couple of Top 10 hits including Christmas Countdown which also charted in the UK.

Perhaps you could update with 2004-4 Shakyfan? - I will chase up pre 1960 if any. Then all we'll be missing is the gap between 1983-85.
I can fill in most of the gap from 1983-1985 from notes I made of all of the Irish Top 30s for that period. Unfortunately, I can't locate the book covering the end of 1983 and first three months of 1984 at present - but from April 1984 onwards, the number ones were:

7/4/84 Hello - Lionel Ritchie (at least 4 weeks)
28/4/84 Against All Odds - Phil Collins (2 weeks)
12/5/84 The Reflex - Duran Duran (2 weeks)
26/5/84 Automatic - The Pointer Sisters (1 week)
2/6/84 The Reflex - Duran Duran (1 more week)
9/6/84 Wake Me Up Before You Go Go - Wham (2 weeks)
23/6/84 Two Tribes - Frankie Goes To Hollywood (5 weeks)
28/7/84 Hole In My Shoe - Neil (1 week)
4/8/84 Two Tribes - Frankie Goes To Hollywood (2 more weeks)
18/8/84 Careless Whisper - George Michael (3 weeks)
8/9/84 I Just Called To Say I Love You - Stevie Wonder (5 weeks)
13/10/84 The War Song - Culture Club (2 weeks)
27/10/84 Freedom - Wham (3 weeks)
17/11/84 I Feel For You - Chaka Khan (1 week)
24/11/84 I Should Have Known Better - Jim Diamond (4 weeks - in the last of these weeks, Do They Know It's Christmas - Band Aid was also "a special number one - similarly to Self Aid and The Concerned on other dates)
22/12/84 Do They Know It's Christmas - Band Aid (4 weeks - excluding one with no new chart)
27/1/85 I Want To Know What Love Is - Foreigner (2 weeks)
9/2/85 I Know Him So Well - Elaine Paige / Barbara Dickson (5 weeks)
16/3/85 You Spin Me Round - Dead Or Alive (1 week)
23/3/85 Easy Lover - Philip Bailey/Phil Collins (2 weeks - but in both weeks, Show Some Concern - The Concerned was also "a special number one ")
6/4/85 Show Some Concern - The Concerned (1 week)
13/4/85 We Are The World - USA For Africa (4 weeks)
11/5/85 The Unforgettable Fire - U2 (2 weeks)
25/5/85 19 - Paul Hardcastle (2 weeks)
8/6/85 I'm On Fire - Bruce Springsteen (2 weeks)
22/6/85 You'll Never Walk Alone - Crowd (1 week)
29/6/85 Frankie - Sister Sledge (4 weeks)
27/7/85 Axel F - Harold Faltermeyer (1 week)
3/8/85 There Must Be An Angel - Eurthymics (1 week)
10/8/85 Into The Groove - Madonna (3 weeks)
31/8/85 I Got You Babe - UB40 (2 weeks)
14/9/85 Dancing In The Street - Bowie / Jagger (2 weeks)
28/9/85 Holding Out For A Hero - Bonnie Tyler (1 week)
5/10/85 Part Time Lover - Stevie Wonder (1 week)
12/10/85 If I Was - Midge Ure (1 week)
19/10/85 The Power Of Love - Jennifer Rush (4 weeks)
16-11/85 Nikita - Elton John (1 week)
23/11/85 A Good Heart - Feargal Sharkey (2 weeks)
7/12/85 I'm Your Man - Wham (1 week)
14/12/85 Separate Lives - Collins/Martin (1 week)
21/12/85 Saving All My Love For You - Whitney Houston (1 week)
29/12/85 Thank You Very Much Mr Eastwood - Dermot Morgan.......which someone referred to on one of these threads, so the previously-posted lists must have restarted at some point earlier than this.

I'll try to find my notes on the remainder of the "gap" period when I can.

Over on the "Irish Chart Archives - 80s" thread a few minutes ago, I wrote:

....there was NO "Top 30 of the year" show in 1985 - the Sunday 5th January 1986 show just featured all the number ones of 1985.
And something suddenly struck me - the very same approach was taken on the first Irish chart show of 1985 (on Sunday 6th January), which featured all the number ones of 1984. Which I wrote down on this week's page of my notebook covering April 1984 to December 1985!

So, although I unfortunately can't reveal how many weeks each of these hits spent at number one in Ireland, I can list the six hits which topped the Irish charts from the beginning of 1984 until the point at which Lionel Ritchie took over with "Hello".

And they are:-

ONLY YOU - The Flying Pickets

PIPES OF PEACE - Paul McCartney

A ROCKIN' GOOD WAY - Shakin' Stevens and Bonnie Tyler

RADIO GAGA - Queen

GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN - Cyndi Lauper

99 RED BALLOONS - Nena

Does this, and information elsewhere, now enable ALL the number ones in Ireland to be identified? I hope so!

18 Apr Shakespears Sister - Stay (presumably it went back to number 1 for the 4 missing weeks)
09 May Right Said Fred - Deeply Dippy
While checking something for the Irish album charts of the 90s thread I came across this one and am able to uodate/correct the period above.

The week after U2 went to no 1 Shakespears Sister returned to the top for 1 week and was replaced by Eric Clapton's Tears In Heaven. The next 3 weeks saw those 2 swapping places so it should read

14 Mar U2 - One
21 Mar Shakespears Sister - Stay
28 Mar Eric Clapton - Tears In Heaven
04 Apr Shakespears Sister - Stay
11 Apr Eric Clapton - Tears In Heaven
18 Apr Shakespears Sister - Stay (3 weeks)
