I'll look at the original PDF files first to make sure it's not a transcription error on anybody's part, but I'll get back to you today.

Chartnutz wrote:You might find this a little hard to agree with, but I think something odd happened in the MM chart in early June of 1966. My theory is that Sandie Shaw's "Nothing Comes Easy" and Crispian St. Peters' "Pied Piper" traded places in the chart for some reason.

Here's my evidence - the chart positions for both these records in all the major charts of the time, starting on May 28 1966:

Nothing Comes Easy:
------------------
MM : 30-16-22
NME: 18-15-16-17-22
RR : 25-14-14-16-17-24
DISC: 27-17-14-13-17-24
BBC: ??-14-14-15-17

Pied Piper:
----------
MM : 15-15-10-15-17-25
NME: 15-16-26
RR : 13-16-21
DISC: 14-15-25-28
BBC: 15-15

Although the charts never fully agree on anything much, MM was virtually never out of line with the others to this extent. "Pied Piper" was on the way down the charts after having reached a high of #5 a couple of weeks earlier, so MM's reversal of direction from 15 to 10 is highly unusual and not reflected anywhere else. More importantly, an average of the 4 industry charts doesn't compute to the BBC chart shown.

I am proposing that the chart positions for the two singles should be:

Nothing Comes Easy
------------------
MM : 30-16-10-15-17-25

Pied Piper
----------
MM : 15-15-22

This fits the overall trajectories of the other charts and taking an average of the 4 charts does in fact create the BBC chart shown.

I'd be curious to know if anyone has any information that can back up my theory.
The problem stemps from the chart as printed on 4 June 1966

That chart listed the records in the following order -

14 - You DOn't have to say you love me
16 - Pied Piper
15 - Nothing COmes easy
17 - Come On Home

The following nweeks charts gives a lwk for Nothing Comes easy as 15, with Pied Piper as 16.

Piped Piper goes to 22 as you say with Nothing comes easy going into the Top 10. I mussed have assumed that the order was correct and the positions where wrong. Thanks for spotting!

It's good to see the Melody Maker charts of 1969. However, I think positions 46 to 48 have been left out of the 20 September 1969 Top 50.

Very interesting to view chart performance variations of particular records. For example, confirming school day memories for me that the Beatles 'Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever' and 'Magical Mystery Tour' double EP both made No.1 while 'Lady Madonna' didn't in the MM chart.

Hi! Just like to say that i have collected Melody Maker charts for years and have them from 7 April 1956 (The first one) to April 1979. The MM chart ran to 14 May 1988. From that date both MM and NME stopped `In House` compiling and began using the Music Research Information Bureau charts, which NME still use today. In 1967 the MM had been heavily targeted by chart `Hypers` they ommittied one record from the Top 50 of 25 March 1967 "Love Makes Sweet Music" and were about to delete Johns Childrens "Just What You Want" the next week. The MM chart team were (Rightly) suspicious about Jimi Hendrix "Hey Joe" as well.
The MM decided that from 1 April 67 to only publish a Top 30. They still compiled a top 50 though as they wanted to keep an eye out for suspicious `movements` The MM Top 50 was later published in trade paper "Music Businness Weekly" from 20 September 1969 to 31 March 1971 when MBW ended. DISC and Music Echo briefly published the full 50 from March 1971 to the end of April. From May 1971 the MM cut down its sampling and only published a top 30 until around 1984 (I think!) it was a top 50 again till taking the MRIB chart in May 88.
Must admit i'm puzzled how Andrej compiled chart of 20 Sept 69 as it is still missing! The Colindale library only have a French language copy& edition of MBW for 20 Sept 69 and that `French` copy carries no UK charts! They don't have the 27 Sept edition at all-I only got that chart from 4 Oct 69 edition of MM (In my own collection) as the MM printed that chart in a `Ad` for Music Businness Weekly¬ Can you update Andreje please?

I contacted some ex staff of MM (Chris Welch, Roy Burchill, Chris Charlesworth) I also dug out extensive Daily Mirror (5th Dec 1964) article on the compiling of MM chart. There is no doubt in my mind that in the 1960 - 69 period it was the largest sample! It was at 187 shops contacted in early Dec 1964 and when DISC added some of its sampling to create the chart both papers used from 26 Aug 1967 onward -the sample was at 250 plus by then. The Record Retailer chart only sampled a bare 30 stores from 1960 to 64 and a maximum of 75 - 80 1964 to 69.
Sure! the MM chart had its anomlyies, "Im A Boy" and "Strawberry Fields" are two No1s on the MM and nowhere else. But all the 60s charts had their `rogues` so to speak! What is certain though, that along with the NME chart, Melody Makers was the most authoritive and influential of the 1960s - whatever `crap` over what was `Official` charts that messers Rice, Rice, Reid and Gambaccinni have stuffed Guinness Hit Singles with over the years! Alan Smith.

I used the last week positions of 27 September chart :D I think it was that did it, because I seem to recall being the one who did the typing. I may be mistaken, but that is one way I would have 'created' the chart and it makes sense, since positions are missing (46, for example).

My apologies! When i checked my 27 Sept chart -i realised the 20 Sept was via "Last Week" figures! I'm hoping the 20 Sept may turn up one day! I will be getting the rest of the 1970-71 full top 50s later this year when visting Colindale Library! So if anyone wants copies, i'll let you know when i have them!

Someone pointed out that Andreje transcribed Led Zeppelins "Whole Lotta Love" as "Whole Lotta Woman" In fact `Music Businness Weekly` printed it like that-so Andreje not to blame!

Andrew Ruffhead writes:
The presence of Led Zeppellin's "Whole Lotta Love" in the final Melody Maker charts of 1969 is surprising because the band supposedly never released any singles in the UK in its lifetime. Was it a case of copies being pressed and leaked to retailers before being withdrawn, or is this an early case of an import making the charts?

Yes! "Wholle Lotta Love" was released in the UK by Atlantic Records in Dec 1969. The Group and Peter Grant quickly stopped this as -unlike the USA- singles off LPs (In the 60s & early 70s) were not used to help LP sales.

Enough copies did get out though! I have seen a few at record fairs-they usually sell for well over £100 now!

If i recall right-i sent copies to either Lonnie or Andreje (Or both!) the MM 1950s singles charts! I can't post whole sections in that mode! hopefully Lonnie or Andreje will have them to post here! Elvis gets an extra No1 with "Party" on the MM 50s charts!

The first chart wasn't published, it's made up from the 'Last Week' positions of the following week, which was the first week published.

Ok, thanks anyway. It's fascinating comparing the different charts from the 50's & 60's. Cheers.

Hi, have some corrections to MM'S 60s charts:
1/8 August 1964: Nos.49/48 Inez & Charlie Foxx - Happiness (Sue) (title obviously mixed up with Ken Dodd's Happiness)was actually Inez Foxx - Hurt By Love
(record was credited to Inez Foxx only)
13/20/27 February 1965: Nos. 45/45/44 I think the record listed was 'Laugh, Laugh' by Beau Brummels released on Pye Int. early February 1965 (a US Top 20 hit from January 1965).

Thanks for spotting those.
The first one shows "Hurt By Love", in my database, so I must have corrected it since posting.
The other one has now been corrected in my database, changed title and also amended artist from "Beau Brummell" to "The Beau Brummels".
