It would appear that Hot Press used their own chart when they started off in 1977! The latest issue of the magazine includes a reproduction edition of the very 1st issue which came out 30 years ago. They've added a few of the highlights from the first 6 months including the first Hot Press Charts page which appeared in issue 11 (around the end of November). Out of interest here are the Top 20s

Singles

01 David Soul - Silver Lady
02 Rod Stewart - You're In My Heart
03 Baccara - Yes Sir I Can Boogie
04 La Belle Epoque - Black Is Black

06 Smokie - Needles & Pins
07 Status Quo - Rockin' All Over The World
08 Ram Jam Band - Black Betty
09 Elvis Presley - Way Down

that is GREAT news.

I was wondering how much has been posted here so far, and in other articles.

Would it be possible the place a link here to all the other articles on UK MIX relating to the Irish Chart history?

And yes, please, please reanimate this article as there is hardly anything found about the history of the Irish Charts, other than on UK Mix of course.

I am currently typing up the weekly singles charts for 1970 to 1975 as I have been sent the information recently. It won't be the full Top 20s but rather the Top 15s. I should also be able to add some more detail to the December 1977 charts.

This should then leave us with charts of some description for most (if not all) of the 70s....

I have none of the charts for December 1977. These are the songs that were most likely on those charts. The last 3 charts for the month contain the same songs. 2 of those are probably identical. I haven't tried to estimate any of the real chart positions here, though the number 1 is known

The "official" charts were only published in Starlight for the first 6 months of the year. After that, a different source is used.

09 09 SAMANTHA SANG - EMOTIONS
10 07 ERUPTION - I CAN'T STAND THE RAIN
11 12 HOT CHOCOLATE - EVERY 1'S A WINNER

18 20 TINA CHARLES - I'LL GO WHERE THE MUSIC TAKES ME
19 NE DICKIE ROCK - IT'S ALMOST LIKE A SONG
20 NE THE COTTON MILL BOYS - HEAVEN'S JUST A SIN AWAY

The LW positions in the next chart placed Baker Street at No. 3 and shifted all of the records from Blondie down to Elvis Costello down one place. The Swarbriggs were shown as being No. 18 and Dickie Rock and the Cotton Mill Boys stayed at 19 and 20. No other records could be determined. Eddie's book seems to ignore the "revised" chart and Larry's seems to include it (it credits Baker Street with the extra week but also gives Billy Joel a no. 7 peak which it only has in the original chart). I'm just using the one as originally published but it may be wrong

After this week the chart is compiled by the MCPS for the IFPI and is broadcast on Sundays on RTE radio with Jimmy Greeley as the presenter. Those charts will follow later on in this post. So with that in mind I can't understand why Larry Gogan's book and www.irishcharts.ie continue to use the Starlight charts for the next three weeks. Those charts are presented here but should not be considered official. Eddie Kelly's Top 10 Hits book uses the MCPS chart

Many thanks for all this new information and updates - today I have finally found time to go through all the 1977 and 1978 revisions and additions, with only a few observations arising:

beatlened wrote:The Darts hit gets a solitary week at no. 9 in Larry's book

June 29th, 1978 INCOMPLETE

Best guess for the one unidentified hit is Darts - Boy From New York City. It's definitely not the previous week's No. 1, Boney M, which drops off the chart. Great start for the new compilers!!
I'd definitely agree with Darts - and I'd go further, and place it at number nine for this week, which seems to be the week Larry's book says it occupied this position!

beatlened wrote:The Genesis hit is missing from Larry's book and irishcharts.ie
But, yet again, I see that it's in Eddie's book, apparently in the correct week! While this and "Wishing On A Star" seem to be the only omissions from Larry's in this period, several other errors in weeks totals and chart peaks can be seen too, the most significant of which you have mentioned here.

beatlened wrote:January 12th, 1978 (5th of January in the books)

08 NE BRENDAN SHINE - CHRISTMASTIME IN IRELAND
That's a re-entry of a hit from 1974. Eddie's book, listing the appearances separately, gives it the same catalogue number on both occasions.

beatlened wrote:June 1st, 1978

17 NE GLORIA & THE MISSISSIPPI - ONE DAY AT A TIME
And that, of course, is a re-entry of "Ireland's Most Charted" of the 1970s. Although it appeared in various different sleeves and had various different labels (with and without mentioning the Mississippi) it was always Release RL 873.

The back of one of those sleeves, incidentally, reproduces the top end of a published singles chart in which it had been at number one - almost certainly a week missing from here! I'm almost sure that I once bought a copy, although I fear that it is filed away too inaccessibly to find for quite some time. I must look out for a scan of this - maybe the single will turn up on ebay at some point, for example.....

However, those four weeks, and the eleven from earlier, had not been included in the totals the chart show presenters mentioned almost every week. In the first week I heard the weekly show, Gloria's 43rd appearance, Jimmy Greeley said it was in for "28 weeks" - and in the last one before the strike in 1980, its 90th, Larry Gogan said it was there for "74 weeks" (not adding one for the Christmas just gone!).

beatlened wrote:After this week Larry's book and irishcharts.ie use charts other than those published in Starlight. Eddie Kelly's book has James Galway at No. 1

June 29th, 1978 INCOMPLETE

01 02 JOHN TRAVOLTA and OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN - YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT
This is quite a mystery.....if only I had discovered the Irish chart show a few months earlier than I actually did, towards the end of 1978! (I now recall that the reason I did was that whatever Sunday newspaper was once delivered to us in error included the RTE Radio programme schedule for the day!). However, I've just taken a look at the notes I made when listening to the 31st December 1978 broadcast - billed as "the top 20 singles of 1978" but actually being the number ones (almost) in order.....

Annotating your number ones list from another thread for what I noted that day that Jimmy Greeley said about "when" they were number one.....

05-Dec-77 WINGS - MULL OF KINTYRE - 10 ("This month, back.....January, on top")

13-Feb-78 BROTHERHOOD OF MAN - FIGARO - 1 ("Beginning of February")

20-Feb-78 ABBA - TAKE A CHANCE ON ME - 1 ("Second week of February")

27-Feb-78 DANNY DOYLE - RARE OULD TIMES - 2 (He didn't play or mention this one)

13-Mar-78 KATE BUSH - WUTHERING HEIGHTS - 3 ("Mid February to Mid March")

03-Apr-78 BRIAN AND MICHAEL - MATCHSTALK MEN AND MATCHSTALK CATS AND DOGS - 3 ("Mid April to end April")

24-Apr-78 THE BEE GEES - NIGHT FEVER - 3 ("End of April, beginning of May")

15-May-78 BONEY M - RIVERS OF BABYLON - 5 ("May, until the end of May") (eh?)

19-Jun-78 JOHN TRAVOLTA/OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN - YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT - 8
21-Aug-78 JOHN TRAVOLTA/OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN - YOU'RE THE ONE THAT I WANT - 1
("June, July, August")

He then played:

JAMES GALWAY - ANNIE'S SONG ("June"}

28-Aug-78 COMMODORES - THREE TIMES A LADY - 3 ("Mid August to Mid September")

Then:

10cc - DREADLOCK HOLIDAY "September" (??? - both Eddie's and Larry's book only give this a number two peak)

Then back to one that might have been accidentally missed a little earlier:

14-Aug-78 CLOUT - SUBSTITUTE - 1 ("August")

18-Sep-78 ABBA - SUMMER NIGHT CITY - 1 ("September")

25-Sep-78 GLORIA & THE MISSISSIPPI - ONE DAY AT A TIME - 1
06-Nov-78 GLORIA & THE MISSISSIPPI - ONE DAY AT A TIME - 1
("September")

02-Oct-78 JOHN TRAVOLTA and OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN - SUMMER NIGHTS - 4 ("October")

30-Oct-78 JOHN TRAVOLTA - SANDY - 1 (no month noted)

Then:

BOOMTOWN RATS - RAT TRAP ("November") (???)
ROD STEWART - DO YA THINK I'M SEXY ("December") (???)

instead of
13-Nov-78 OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN - HOPELESSLY DEVOTED TO YOU - 1

And finally:

20-Nov-78 BONEY M - MARY'S BOY CHILD - OH MY LORD - 7 ("December")

Which may suggest that James Galway did get to number one in Ireland in that week of 1978 - but creates a few uncertainties for later in the year!

( I also noted that this week it was mentioned - most likely by the continuity announcer, after the end of the programme and before the start of the next one - that the chart was compiled at that time by "MCPS for IFPI and RTE" )

And there's a scan of that sleeve here, which can be enlarged to actual size by clicking on it!

http://www.45cat.com/record/rl873

Here's what can be seen and/or deduced for that later week of 1978:

IRELAND'S TOP 30
RTE GUIDE, NOVEMBER 17, 1978
compiled by the MCPS for the IFPI (Ireland)

01 ( 02 ) ONE DAY AT A TIME - GLORIA AND THE MISSISSIPPI
02 ( 08 ) HOPELESSLY DEVOTED TO YOU - OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN
03 ( 04 ) SUMMER NIGHTS - JOHN TRAVOLTA AND OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN
04 ( 03 ) LUCKY STARS - DEAN FRIEDMAN
05 ( 09 ) DARLIN' - FRANKIE MILLER
06 ( 01 ) SANDY - JOHN TRAVOLTA
07 ( 05 ) RASPUTIN - BONEY M
08 ( --- ) PRETTY LITTLE ANGEL EYES - SHOWADDYWADDY
09 ( 07 ) MACARTHUR PARK - DONNA SUMMER
10 ( 10 ) RAT TRAP - BOOMTOWN RATS
11 ( 12 ) BICYCLE RACE/ FAT BOTTOMED GIRLS - QUEEN
12 ( 17 ) HONEY - BOBBY GOLDSBORO
13 ( 06 ) SWEET TALKIN' WOMAN - ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA
14 ( ?? ) TALKING IN YOUR SLEEP - CRYSTAL GAYLE
15 ( --- ) PUBLIC IMAGE - PUBLIC IMAGE LIMITED
17 ( ?? ) DIPPETY DAY - FATHER ABRAHAM AND THE SMURFS
19 ( 20 ) LAY DOWN BESIDE ME/ IF THE SHOE FITS - BRENDAN SHINE
20 ( --- ) IS YOUR LOVE IN VAIN - BOB DYLAN
?? ( ?? ) MEXICAN GIRL - SMOKIE
?? ( --- ) DON'T LOOK BACK - BOSTON

This would seem to confirm that the chart had been extended to a top thirty by this point (just a few weeks before I found this to be so) - and perhaps that the RTE Guide may be another useful source for missing data?

Nice observations. I'll go through them when I get some time and see if any of that info can bring out some other hidden data.

And I'll definitely check the library for the RTE guide. :-)

The Starlight charts for the rest of 1978 don't correspond to either the number ones Larry listed, or the Jimmy Greeley list here. I'm guessing Jimmy played Rod Stewart because he reached number one in the UK and he needed to fill time!! Its possible 10cc and the Rats reached number one in the RTE chart because they did in Starlight. But I'd say it's unlikely. There's also no chart in Starlight that corresponds to that RTE guide one.

I haven't all of Starlight's charts for 1978 but number ones after "Rivers Of Babylon" were listed in an end of year issue and are:-
Fr Abraham & the Smurfs, - Smurf Song
John & Olivia - The One That I Want
Clout - Substitute
Renaissance - Northern Lights
Commodores - Three Times A Lady
Boney M - Brown Girl In The Ring
10cc - Dreadlock Holiday
Gloria - One Day At A Time
John & Olivia - Summer Nights
Boomtown Rats - Rat Trap
Boney M - Mary's Boy Child

No Abba and no other songs from Grease. And no James Galway!!

The Smurfs peaked at 17 and you have identified the #17 from the previous week, which was the Smurfs only other week so it must be 17 this week.

I don't think Leo Sayer or the Dooleys were charted this week and the chart is only a Top 20

After extensive checking to see how I had gone wrong here, I'm now certain that you are correct with all of that. I have amended my above post accordingly - and also to reflect that, as I now realise, the Boston hit must have been a new entry in this week.

On the subject of the RTE Guide would it be possible that some of the missing positions from the early 90s charts could be found there too? I know for certain that for a period around then they carried the Top 30 singles AND albums each week...

After this week the chart is compiled by the MCPS for the IFPI and is broadcast on Sundays on RTE radio with Jimmy Greeley as the presenter. Those charts will follow later on in this post.
So now, while he continues to research further years, I'll begin to post those charts which he has found in the RTE Guides for the rest of 1978.

For almost a year, the chart show on RTE Radio ("on 529 and Cork 253") was just one hour in length, starting at two o'clock - "The Top Twenty" - although, before all of the top twenty hits were played, so too were any Irish records in the bottom ten of the top thirty.

It was quite a music-packed programme - with a short opening theme and a similar closing theme, both incorporating the presenter's name-jingle (the latter, twice!). The only other jingles were "Number Three", "Number Two" (each just ahead of those top sellers) and "Number One", (before and after the chart-topper).

Apart from the hits, there was otherwise only a spoken recap of the top twenty just before the number one, with background music - preceded by a few seconds from the B-side of a recently-released Dan Hartman single ("Countdown"....."Countdown.....").

When the programme moved to RTE Radio 2 almost a year later, gaining an extra hour, several commercial breaks, and Larry Gogan, it became "Ireland's Top Thirty". But now, apart from a few charts of this length that beatlened discovered in some much earlier years, we can see how "Ireland's Top Thirty" really began.....with just eight survivors from the previous week's top twenty, only two of them in the top ten!!!
