The first week of this next month sees the beginning of a continuous 75-week run in the Irish charts for Gloria (sometimes, "and the Mississippi") with "One Day At A Time" (if an extra week is added for a week in which no chart might have been compiled at the end of 1979, but no additional week is added for a similar week at the end of 1978 !)

Prior to this, it had spent eleven weeks in the top twenty in 1977, peaking at number five - then four weeks earlier in 1978 (17-13-11-12), all of which are also included in Larry's book. However, if the first three charts from the new compiler are to be regarded as more official than those in which Gloria appeared at 13, 11 and 12, the final 90 weeks total would lose those three weeks!

To avoid creating any more confusion than this does already, I have restarted the total weeks from 01 here - which is consistent with those that Jimmy Greeley, then Larry Gogan, would mention in virtually every week until the end of the next year - at least, from the point I first heard the chart show. I've just checked my notes again, and that week was its "17th" (or 32nd, or 29th.....!)

The number 24, and all of the top twenty, were played on the chart show of Sunday 24th December - and it was mentioned in the first chart show of the new year than Elton John had climbed from the previous week's number 21. So those were the only tracks previously known from the bottom ten - until now!

I have now added the previously unknown eight positions of the bottom ten of the last top 30 of 1978 into the above post - and the (very nearly full) story of the Irish singles charts continues at the beginning of the 1979 to 1981 thread, newly updated, here.

From the 1979 - 1981 thread....

beatlened wrote:In issue dated 6th July 1979 the RTE Guide published some statistics for the first half of the year. Seemingly based on issues 12th January to 6th July the Top 30 records of the year (30 points for a number 1 down to 1 for a number 30) were:-

01 ONE DAY AT A TIME - GLORIA - 475 ( 475 )
02 GREEN FIELDS OF FRANCE - FUREY BROTHERS AND DAVEY ARTHUR - 432 ( 422 )
03 BRIGHT EYES - ART GARFUNKEL - 300 ( 300 )
04 SOME GIRLS - RACEY - 265 ( 265 )
05 FOREVER IN BLUE JEANS - NEIL DIAMOND - 242 ( 242 )
06 I WILL SURVIVE - GLORIA GAYNOR - 241 ( 241 )
07 HEART OF GLASS - BLONDIE - 236 ( 236 )
07 TRAGEDY - BEE GEES - 236 ( 236 )
09 DOES YOUR MOTHER KNOW - ABBA - 218 ( 218 )
10 Y.M.C.A. - VILLAGE PEOPLE - 211 ( 211 )
11 SUNDAY GIRL - BLONDIE - 199 ( 199 )
12 CHIQUITITA - ABBA - 190 ( 190 )
13 YOU NEEDED ME - ANNE MURRAY - 186 ( 186 )
14 HAPPY MAN - CATHAL DUNNE - 182 ( 182 )
15 LAY YOUR LOVE ON ME - RACEY - 178 ( 178 )
16 YOU'RE THE GREATEST LOVER - GINA, DALE HAZE & THE CHAMPIONS - 173 ( 163 )
16 POP MUSIK - M - 173 ( 173 )
18 A LITTLE MORE LOVE - OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN - 172 ( 172 )
19 HELLO THIS IS JOANIE - PAUL EVANS - 169 ( 169 )
20 DANCE AWAY - ROXY MUSIC - 168 ( 168 )
20 REUNITED - PEACHES AND HERB - 168 ( 168 )
22 OLIVER'S ARMY - ELVIS COSTELLO & THE ATTRACTIONS - 165 ( 165 )
23 HALLELUJAH - MILK AND HONEY - 155 ( 155 )
24 MY LIFE - BILLY JOEL - 151 ( 151 )
25 THE LOGICAL SONG - SUPERTRAMP - 148 ( 148 )
25 THEME FROM 'THE DEER HUNTER' - SHADOWS - 148 ( 148 )
25 WOMAN IN LOVE - THREE DEGREES - 148 ( 148 )
25 PARISIENNE WALKWAYS - GARY MOORE - 148 ( 148 )
29 DO YOU WANT YOUR OLD LOBBY WASHED DOWN - BRENDAN SHINE - 147 ( 147 )
30 SULTANS OF SWING - DIRE STRAITS - 144 ( 144 )

The points totals in blue were the correct totals. The RTE guide gave 10 extra points to the Fureys and to the Champions.

Also in case it wasn't obvious the chart included a footnote to say that "Four titles tied for 25th place; two for 7th, 16th and 20th place"

The Top 10 artists for the first 6 months of the year were:

01.BEE GEES (3) - 493
02. GLORIA (1) - 475
03. BLONDIE (3) - 447
04. RACEY (2) - 443
05. FUREY BROTHERS AND DAVEY ARTHUR (1) - 432 422
06. ABBA (2) - 408
07. VILLAGE PEOPLE (2) - 348
08. ART GARFUNKEL (1) - 300
09. SHADOWS (2) - 289
10. BONEY M (4) - 270
The figure in brackets is the number of hits

As well as the artists listed in that chart, only Elton John and Rod Stewart had as many as 3 hits

It was stated in the commentary that Neil Diamond would be at No. 8 in the top 10 artists if his points with Barbra Streisand were added in (he had 324 points)

Total number of records in the Top 30 159 (includes 30 records which were in the chart at the turn of the year, 129 new entries)
Total number of Irish records in the Top 30 24
Total number of artists in the chart 127
Total number of Irish artists in the chart 23

The number of Irish records did not include the hits by Thin Lizzy, Dana or Gary Moore as they were "not Irish records as such". The Boomtown Rats were included as the records were released in Ireland on the Mulligan label

26 artists had more than 1 chart entry

Only 2 one hit wonders (1 week at No. 30)
"Slow Down" by Kenny Ryder and "Get Down" by Gene Chandler

The article finished off by saying that they'd be back at the end of the year with the full year's standings. As far as I can tell, this never happened!
I've just come across a cutting from the first issue of the RTE Guide from 1979 and it seems that while they didn't do it for the second half of 1979 they had covered the same period in 1978.
