Brazilian Charts: JAMES BLUNT "Same Mistake" #1

Moderators: trebor, kingofskiffle, nympho

Postby Flyer_ » Fri May 02, 2008 5:37 pm

I've been visiting this forum for two months, and noticed most of the information about the artists' airplay in Brazil is based on Hot100Brasil. It's probably the most known source for charts in Brazil, however not the most reliable.
I can clearly understand why everyone who's interested in Brazilian charts would promptly use this site ---and I also am aware that Brazilian market isn't that important for the whole international music scenario that needs a precise airplay analysis as does the Mediabase in the USA; what I’m tired of is, that chart doesn’t really represent what’s been played around here, from the point where stands my opinion, this weekly chart is a nonsense thing, made up in three minutes every Sunday.
Assuming H100B chart “speaks” for all the Brazilian radios, isn’t reasonable, it is, in fact, utterly madness. How come only “280 selected” radios can result in reliable information, when there are hundreds of other radios around here that haven’t been consulted?
What I’m trying to purpose is a chart that could be representative, not for the whole country as does the H100B, because it’s really huge, it would take a real hard work to gather all the information weekly; but representative for a small region of Brazil. The idea is, if we can’t be precise enough to talk about the whole, let’s focus in what is up to be done precisely.

There’s recent launched enterprise, called “Crowley Broadcast Analysis do Brasil”, that’s been researching the most played songs in the ten most populous cities here. Also, it gives weekly and for free the results for two of major Brazilian states, São Paulo state (over 41 million inhabitants) and Rio de Janeiro state (over 15 million inhabitants); combined these states respond for almost 30% of all Brazilians and for a GDP (Gross Domestic Production) bigger than the combined GDP of Austria plus New Zealand, for example, and +42% of Brazilian GDP. I’m saying all this to illustrate that these two states are really important for Brazilian economy, politics and culturally, they’re like two shinning stars ahead of the rest of our country. If São Paulo starts playing one song, it’s like almost sure the rest of our country will play it too. The same for Rio, and some carioca funk acts known nationally nowdays. However, it’s not instantaneous. There’re parts of Brazil where some songs will take more time to reach; it’s natural.

Considering the charts generated by the above broadcast analist for São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, I can assume the most played song in these states is, currently, JAMES BLUNT “Same Mistake”, which is the chart-topping position in São Paulo’s chart and #2 in Rio’s. Also it’s already a hit in digital sales –we don’t have iTunes, and y’all know, but there’s a website, the biggest of Brazil and in Portuguese language, the Universo Online, which has a digital store (the first of Brazil, and the biggest to date), and James’ song is featured as #1. And on Yahoo store, it’s currently #2.
I’m not able to size the real impact of these sales, but we can assume at least 50% of the total amount of digital sales, come from São Paulo and Rio states. And if we would like to go even farther, James has currently the #1 song in all these Brazilian online streaming radios (UOL, YAHOO, TERRA, etc).

I can’t say “Same Mistake” is the #1 nationally, right now. But it has high chances, and if it’s not right now, it will be within one or two weeks.

Crowley webpage doesn't contains chart information, but well, Crowley is the one behind the charts for Rio and São Paulo given by Espetaculo.com.br.

Where did you get the pdf? Does the last column means # of spins or just stations reported?

Yes. "Total de Execuções" means, spins...
And the pdf is basically the same report I gave before. Both have Crowley as source.

Sorry, I can't.
A CNPJ number is required now, and it is like an ID. for commercial estabilishments only, like radios, stores, supermarkets, etc; normal people don't have it.

Exactly. James Blunt' Same Mistake is included on "Duas Caras" soap-opera soundtrack, and is aired daily in television, between 8:45 and 10:00 PM, which gives a average audience of more than 30 million impressions daily, that is, more than 30 million people watch that soap-opera, and hear James' song on the TV. Also, the soap-opera is supporting Chris Brown, whose song, Kiss Kiss, is aired aswell. No One is part of that soundtrack too, but when it came out, we already had the song released around here, so I can't say it owns the success to the soap-opera. But the other songs had clearly a boosted airplay after the soap-opera.

Good for you, dude!
Well, H100B is said to make a research weekly in 27 states, using 280 selected radio stations, and from the point where stands my opinion, it's not enough to become really representative. In other hand, Crowley makes research in only ten different cities to generate the national chart FlexAccess features as Brazilian Top 100. See? It's even worse to assume FlexAccess is official... I dunno. I wouldn't grant it the official status as some have done with H100B in the past.
What's really interesting about Crowley is, it does a detailed research for both Rio and São Paulo, and being Brazilian as you do, you are pretty conscious of their national importance, no matter if it's economic (buying digital tracks), no matter if it's because of their population density (being responsible for a huge amount of audience impressions).
If São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro charts are reliable, we can use’em to deduce what will be played nationally within few weeks. I don’t know what can be made, maybe a time of two or three weeks are enough, but I don’t know… Suggestions?
Of course, I'm not saying just because São Paulo plays a X song, it will become #1 everywhere, but the chances are really big. It's almost like NYC Z100. If it plays a song, you better believe other tiny radios will play too (we should also consider the inverse effect when Z100 beggins to play a song because of other radios, but that's not usual, as I can recall).

I’m pretty sure James Blunt is the ahead of all other artists, including Mariah Carey, featured as #1 by H100B, but I can say it because I know everyone likes it because of the soap-opera, but what will we do next? When comes out songs that never aired on television? Hard to tell…
I propose adding the National Airplay chart generated by Crowley, plus Universo Online Megastore Top 10 Digital Tracks, Yahoo Top 100 Digital Tracks, Universo Online Radio Top 20 Hits, MSN Brazil Top 100 Digital Songs, Terra Radio Most Played Songs, MTV Most Wanted Videos and Hot100Brazil, to generate a list that isn’t representative for the whole country, but the closest thing we will get to illustrate what are the hits around here.
What do you guys think about it?

Hot 100 Brasil is totally fake, period.

and guess it's better for me not to access the website, guess i could but it says in the end that you can get punished by laws if you're not from a radio station, that scared me  lol

"Touch My Body" airplay was kinda boosted this week, reaching #3 and #2 in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, respectively. Also, she currently tops the online streaming radio charts aournd here.
I'm waiting the update of our "digital tracks" chart. Last week she almost didn't have paid downloads, that is, didn't charted. This week the song, aparently, was released for paid download. Let's see what happens. If she could top James' sales, she'll become this week's #1.

In other hand, our beloved HOT100BRASIL features Madonna's "4 Minutes" as this week's #1... That's probably because the responsible doesn't know "4 Minutes" airplay decreased this week, or because he felt guilty because didn't give Madonna a proper position last week, when said Mariah was #1, virtually without airplay, when Madonna was topping digital sales and had a respectable airplay, if comparing both, the Diva and the Queen airplay (Madonna was larger)... Weird, huh?

Well, it's a spin based chart. If we could generate a full chart, using audience impressions plus singles sales, I'd bet Madonna would beat Mariah, because,

(1) Madonna seems to have more consistent sales everywhere. Mariah's "Touch My Body" debuted last week at UOL Megastore, went to #8, where it's currently. In other hand, Madonna's "4 Minutes" debuted four weeks ago and is still inside the top 5.

(2) "4 Minutes" is #5 in São Paulo, and probably gets an overall audience impression which is almost equal to #2 or #3 in Rio de Janeiro. São Paulo has a larger audience, mainly because of it's population, over 11 million inhabitants, when Rio's population is around 7 million.

This confirms, once more that Mariah's chart-power comes specially from radio airplay, in other hand, Madonna is mantained by digital sales.
