20) Robert Palmer - Addicted to Love
23) Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
24) John Mellencamp - Jack and Diane
30) Michael Jackson - Beat It
31) Motley Crue - Home Sweet Home
33) Madonna - Material Girl (actually didn't say, but I'm just guessing)

4) Madonna - Like a Virgin
5) The Police - Every Breath You Take
6) Dire Straits - Money for Nothing

9) ZZ - Top Legs
10) Duran Duran - Hungry Like the Wolf
11) Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me
12) Madonna - Like a Prayer
13) Michael Jackson - Billie Jean (guess)
14) Bon Jovi - Wanted Dead or Alive
15) INXS - Need You Tonight (Also a guess)
17) Run DMC feat. Aerosmith - Walk This Way
18) Beastie Boys - Fight for Your Right (to Party)
19) Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark
22) Metallica - One
~29) Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation

37) Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody
~38) Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like a Lady)
~39) Bryan Adams - Summer of '69
~41) U2 - New Year's Day
44/47) Men at Work - Down Under
45) Poison - Every Rose Has Its Thorn

72) REM - The One I Love
89) Def Leppard - Photograph
90) David Bowie - China Girl
~97) Toni Basil - Mickey
~98) Madonna - Into the Groove
100) George Thorogood - Bad to the Bone

That all makes sense.

According to this (date unknown), Eurythmics spent 2 weeks at #2 while Phil Collins was #1 with "Sussudio", with Eurythmics climbing to #1 and Bryan Adams climbing from an unknown position to #2 with "Heaven".

Also, at the end he mentioned new debuts from Sting ("If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free"), Prince ("Raspberry Beret") and Bruce Springsteen ("Glory Days"), and to tune in next week to see if "People Get Ready" from Rod Stewart/Jeff Beck would debut.

I love this thread. I grew up in the 80s and watched MTV all the time, especially the countdown. There's a certain magic to 80s-era MTV - the 90s were good as well, but that's when it started becoming less about music videos and more about tv shows.

MTV obviously can't compete with the videos on demand technology of YouTube, but there's something to be said about things not being so readily available, you know? MTV made you hang out and anticipate things - and made events out of things. That feeling of everyone watching it at the same time, and only once at a time. It was exciting and hard to describe if you didn't live through it to compare it to things now.

Anyway - I love that so many of you have all this data and share it. Thank you! Long live the music video!

There weren't DVR's back then but I still occasionally recorded the top 20 during the 90's on VHS.

Here's a clip from 6/26/87, from Dweezil and Moon Unit Zappa's House Party with Sean Lennon introducing U2's "With Or Without You" @ #17:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I51m5am8ikk

From 11/28/84, Alan Hunter with a countdown bump, mentioning how the former week (11/23/84) had Duran Duran and The Knack making debuts, and Wham at #3 and Hall & Oates reaching the top 5.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1o58_ro ... =drive_web

And from a month short of 3 years later (10/30/1987), 30 minutes of the countdown (Halloween edition featuring interview with Jason Bateman promoting Teen Wolf 2) covering spots #18 to #14:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1V018 ... pWTlU/view

A couple of discrepancies from the RS chart come up here: REO Speedwagon's "In My Dreams" and Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven Is A Place On Earth", which were listed as #14 and #13 respectively, were really each a spot lower.

With those in mind and the other bits of info, here's my proposed following several weeks:

Week of 11/6/87:
1) (+2) (8) Fleetwood Mac - “Little Lies” (#1 for 1 week)
2) (-1) (9) Billy Idol - “Mony Mony” (#1 for 2 weeks)
3) (+1) (8) Loverboy - “Notorious” (#3)

9) (Debut) Bruce Springsteen - “Brilliant Disguise” (#9)
10) (=) (6) Bryan Adams - “Victim of Love” (#10)
11) (+1) (5) Cutting Crew - “I’ve Been in Love Before” (#11)
12) (+2) (3) Belinda Carlisle - “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” (#12)
13) (=) (5) Poison - “I Won’t Forget You” (#13)
14) (-8) (11) Heart - “Who Will You Run To?” (#1 for 1 week)
15) (+1) (4) Pink Floyd - “Learning to Fly” (#15)

19) (Debut) Whitesnake - “Is This Love” (#19)
20?) (-5) (6) REO Speedwagon - “In My Dreams” (#12) * or debut of Squeeze - "Hourglass"

10) (+2) (4) Sting - “We’ll Be Together” (#10)
11) (=) (7) Poison - “I Won’t Forget You” (#11) * off rotation lists by this point, so may be on its way out quicker
12) (+1) (6) Pink Floyd - “Learning to Fly” (#12)
13) (+3) (5) Yes - “Love Will Find a Way” (#13)
14) (-10) (10) Loverboy - “Notorious” (#3)

Top 10 recap of 9/2/88:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9VXweYt-zY

Only correction from the preceding week would be that Cheap Trick climbed from #13 to #10 with "Don't Be Cruel". This is my guess at the amended chart from 8/26:

6) (+3) (5) Tracy Chapman - “Fast Car” (#6)

Good find. BTW, I remember you at one point posting records from 89-91 from that other guy, and you did a second run, only with notes on videos that were given the 30 second treatment/etc. up until 12/23/89. Did you have anymore by any chance?

A poster who had that final episode of 89 once had a few recollections of his own:

Cheap Trick's "Ghost Town" was on the top 20 as of 12/10/88 (according to a pre-commercial break bit a year later)
The last two videos to debut in 1988 were "Holding On" by Steve Winwood and "When the Children Cry" by White Lion
The last #1 videos of each year were: "We Belong" - Pat Benatar (1984), "Alive And Kicking" - Simple Minds (1985), "Open Your Heart" - Madonna (1986), "Is This Love" - Whitesnake (1987), "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" - Poison (1988)

Here's a snippet of John Mellencamp debuting at #18 with "Check It Out" preceded by an interview, from 2/26/88:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQ1AELQmAJw

Also notice right at the beginning of the clip, "There's the Girl" from Heart at #19 (instead of #15 as previously thought), a massive plunge from #10 the week before.

I suppose the following bottom 10 would be more accurate:

11) (+5) (2) Richard Marx - “Endless Summer Nights” (#11)
12) (-6) (12) Bangles - “Hazy Shade of Winter” (#1 for 3 weeks)
13) (+6) (2) Cher - “I Found Someone” (#13)
14) (-6) (11) Bruce Springsteen - “Tunnel of Love” (#2)
15) (Debut) Michael Jackson - "Man in the Mirror (#15)
16) (Debut) Michael Bolton - “(Sittin’ on) the Dock of the Bay” (#16)
17) (Debut) Debbie Gibson - “Out of the Blue” (#17)
18) (Debut) John Cougar Mellencamp - "Check it Out" (#18)
19) (-9) (11) Heart - "There's the Girl" (#4)
20) (Debut) INXS - "Devil Inside" (#20)

Here's a clip from the end of 7/21, which was shot in Canada hosted by Kevin Seal, with the top 10 recap and introduction of Martika at #1. Fine Young Cannibals was co-plunge of the week dropping from 3 to 10, and Great White jumped 11-8. Given that FYC was co-plunge at 7 spots down, the other would have been either "I Won't Back Down" from Tom Petty (12->19) had he remained on the chart that week, or Doobie Brothers with "The Doctor" (9->16).

I missed 31-36 but I'm sure they would have been the following: "Are You Gonna Go My Way?" from Lenny Kravitz, "Shoop" from Salt N Pepa, "Billie Jean" from Michael Jackson, "Don't Cry" from Guns N Roses, "Sledgehammer" from Peter Gabriel and "Janie's Got a Gun" from Aerosmith.

I definitely remember the sudden absence of Def Leppard, who were at 40 the time before with "Pour Some Sugar On Me".

Talk about a list that's skewed towards recent videos. Completely random to have Onyx place one spot higher than Welcome to the Jungle. Slam didn't even make the MTV 500 a few years later, while W2tJ would place at #2 on the 80's countdown in '98. Regulate was too new I think to be on there.

I wonder if Legs made the countdown in one of the missing spots. Maybe Mariah Carey as well? She only has one entry and was pretty popular at the time. Two Princes would be another guess.

I remember an all time countdown that aired nearly a year later in the Spring of '95 which Nirvana held the top spot, I had recorded a few videos from it but didn't write the order down.

I remember Mariah Carey only having one vid at that time. Oddly enough, "I'll Be There" was #78 on the Memorial Day chart that year. Also, "Legs" from ZZ Top was #75, but dropped off. (The following Memorial weekend chart would see it return at #75.) "Two Princes" I remember was #60 on the Super Bowl weekend countdown that year but dropped off right afterwards.

I remember some of the Memorial Day '95 list:

1) Nirvana - "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
2) Michael Jackson - "Thriller"
3) Aerosmith - "Janie's Got A Gun"
4) Green Day - "Basket Case"
5) Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Under the Bridge"
6) Boyz II Men - "I'll Make Love To You"
7) Guns N' Roses - "November Rain"
8) Pearl Jam - "Jeremy"
9) Madonna - "Vogue"
10) Aerosmith - "Cryin'"
