Duly noted.

Handle With Care from the Traveling Wilburys debuted in early Dec. (possibly 12/9) at #20 according to one of the breaks. IIRC it peaked at #8 and spent 7 weeks on the chart.

Yes I do remember "Handle with Care" peaking at 8 then falling to 14 the next week.
Don't recall their trajectory or which week they peaked at 8

I think I'm going to take a stab at posting the top 100 of the 90s from fall 97, mostly from recollection in a bit.

Here it is, from descending order to the best of my recollection. The list was posted by someone online at one point. I was too stupid to save it on file at the time. I'm largely going off on recall of what played when, and process of elimination elsewhere. Thanks! :D This list was a little premature to do for them so early on.

MTV also aired an updated top 100 of the '80s the day after the '90s as well but I think it's the first version that is still considered more valid.

The 80s one was a bit of a redux. Someone has posted a few VJ clips, which reveal the following:

20) Robert Palmer - Addicted to Love
23) Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
24) John Mellencamp - Jack and Diane
30) Michael Jackson - Beat It
31) Motley Crue - Home Sweet Home
33) Madonna - Material Girl (actually didn't say, but I'm just guessing)
34) Prince - 1999

Madonna had 7 clips on the list in total.

Here's what I vaguely remember:
1) Michael Jackson - Thriller
2) Guns 'n' Roses - Welcome to the Jungle
3) Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
4) Madonna - Like a Virgin
5) The Police - Every Breath You Take
6) Dire Straits - Money for Nothing
7) Van Halen - Jump
8) U2 - With or Without You
9) ZZ - Top Legs
10) Duran Duran - Hungry Like the Wolf
11) Def Leppard - Pour Some Sugar On Me
12) Madonna - Like a Prayer
13) Michael Jackson - Billie Jean (guess)
14) Bon Jovi - Wanted Dead or Alive
15) INXS - Need You Tonight (Also a guess)
17) Run DMC feat. Aerosmith - Walk This Way
18) Beastie Boys - Fight for Your Right (to Party)
19) Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark
22) Metallica - One
~29) Janet Jackson - Rhythm Nation

37) Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody
~38) Aerosmith - Dude (Looks Like a Lady)
~39) Bryan Adams - Summer of '69
~41) U2 - New Year's Day
44/47) Men at Work - Down Under
45) Poison - Every Rose Has Its Thorn
46) Don Henley - The Boys of Summer
47) Guns 'n' Roses - Paradise City
49) Def Leppard - Hysteria
~54) Whitesnake - Here I Go Again
58/59) Guns 'n' Roses - Patience
66) Madonna - Papa Don't Preach
67) Neil Young - This Note's for You
68) nine inch nails - Head Like a Hole
72) REM - The One I Love
89) Def Leppard - Photograph
90) David Bowie - China Girl
~97) Toni Basil - Mickey
~98) Madonna - Into the Groove
100) George Thorogood - Bad to the Bone

Free Fallin was in the 20s IIRC.

A wikia was started for MTV. Any thoughts about contributing with lists?

I don't doubt you about Stevie Nicks "Rooms on Fire" peaking at 7.
I always thought she peaked at 10. Wouldn't recall which week.

Kinda odd that Jewel's "Who Will Save Your Soul" was on the 90's countdown, considering it failed to make the year end chart. I think Foolish Games would've been more fitting as it was the weekly #1 around the time the countdown aired.

On the 80's countdown, I remember Need You Tonight at #13, Take On Me at #15 and Billie Jean being #16. I think New Years Day by U2 was around #33 and Sunday Bloody Sunday was in the late 40's and Pride somewhere around #60. I tuned in at #81 When Doves Cry, followed by #80 Pink Houses. I wrote all of them down but that piece of paper is long gone.

That's unfortunate you lost it. Would love the entire list.

"Foolish Games" was too new to make it (#4 as of that weekend on the top 20), and also sometimes they gave more weight to early "sleepers" than vids considered to be coasting a bit off of momentum, which was the case for FG.

There's too many inconsistencies with the 90's countdowns, for instance, STP's "Interstate Love Song" was #9 on the '96 list but dropped down to #82 a year later only to rise up to #26 on the '98 countdown. I realize they would switch it around with Plush in the rankings, but that's still a major difference in such a short span.

Billboard - 8 Mar, 1986

CBS May Pass On MTV 'Countdown'
BY STEVEN DUPLER

NEW YORK MTV's "Top 20 Video Countdown," already cleared on 76 stations in nearly half of all U.S. markets, may make its debut in the syndicated broadcast market next month without videoclips by CBS Records Group artists.

Although MTV Networks president and CEO Bob Pittman says the syndicated countdown show, to be marketed by MTVN parent firm Viacom International, has concluded licensing agreements with "basically all the major labels." spokesmen for WEA, PolyGram and Arista say only that talks on such agreements are "continuing."

CBS says discussions about the show are ongoing there also. But a source close to the situation says that while MTV has offered "standard" syndication rights payments for the clips, money is not the primary issue.

Rather, the source says, CBS is concerned there is an overabundance of video countdown shows on broadcast television, and that the promotional value of allowing its clips to be used for yet another is negligible. Both CBS executives and Pittman refused further comment on the source's statements.

"You've got a glut now with Friday Night Videos, which has essentially become a countdown show, Dick Clark, and others," the source says.
Meanwhile, at least one label, which does not charge for clip usage and whose executives prefer anonymity, has been sent a letter by the network requesting that it allow MTV to use its clips for the syndicated "Top 20 Countdown" for a period of three years. In return, the label receives no payment, but rather the promotional value gained by broader exposure for its clips. The letter does state, however, that "if the label's fee pulicy changes," MTV will be "willing to re-open discussions then."

The one-hour countdown show offered, which Pittman says will be cleared in more than 75% of the country's markets by the time of its debut April 1, is based upon the two- hour version MTV has been running on cable. Once time has been allotted for ad spots, announcements, and station IDs, however, the actual running time for videos will be "about 45 minutes," according to Pittman, or "about seven or eight videos."

Thus, says Pittman, should CBS decide not to license its clips to the show, those seven or eight spots will simply be allotted to the other labels who have pacted and who also have clips appearing in the top 20.

While all the week's top 20 titles will be named, including any by CBS artists, only those labels with licensing agreements with the show will be played. This would mean that artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Sade, Miami Sound Machine, Survivor, the Hooters, Elvis Costello, Ozzy Osbourne, ELO, Loverboy, and Eddie Murphy - most are either now charting in Billboard's top 20 or appearing in power, heavy, active, or breakout rotation on MTV - would not be included.

There was also kind of a "whatever MTV's mood is" factor to it. Interstate Love Song was #138 on the MTV 500 in mid '97, so there was enough early precedent. Plush was #59, which would have come out to something like #23 of the 90s based on interpolation. MTV had just undergone a major revamp that spring, so a lot of artists had been reassessed. The #26 ranking of ILS in the '98 chart was consistent as far as top ranking STP showings went.

By the way, found a chart for 9/23/88, and Kenny Loggins and GnR were back to back after all. Back to back falling vids were only rare at that point. Certainly no more than 2 together.

And I've found a correction or two, reflected in the top 10 above for pertinent dates.

Also, the following top 10, attributed to 11/20/87 I believe (was part of the Dec. 4 issue, but on occasion they were behind a week or two; the top 2 were the main giveaways regarding the intended date).

1) (+2) (6) R. E. M. - "The One I Love" (1 week at #1)
2) (-1) (10) Fleetwood Mac - "Little Lies" (2 weeks at #1)
3) (+2) (3) Bruce Springsteen - "Brilliant Disguise" (#3)
4) (+4) (5) Belinda Carlisle - "Heaven Is a Place On Earth" (#4)
5) (+1) (11) Richard Marx - "Should've Known Better" (#5)
6) (+1) (9) Aerosmith - “Dude (Looks Like a Lady)” (#6)
7) (-5) (11) Billy Idol - “Mony Mony” (#1 for 2 weeks)
8) (+1) (7) Cutting Crew - “I’ve Been in Love Before” (#8)
9) (+7) (3) Whitesnake - "Is This Love?" (#9)
10) (+5?) (4) Sting - “We’ll Be Together” (#10)

This does raise a question. If Should've Known Better peaked at #4 as you remember if you're reading mrpenpen, would that mean it hung in there and climbed for one more week before finally taking a plunge? Because there is one more open week, unless you also specifically remember Richard Marx spending 12 weeks on the chart.

Potential alt-reality of Marx peaking on 11/27:

Week of 11/27/87 (Non-RS)
1) (+3) (6) Belinda Carlisle - “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” (#1 for 1 week)
2) (-1) (7) R.E.M. - “The One I Love” (#1 for 1 week)
3) (=) (4) Bruce Springsteen - “Brilliant Disguise” (#3)
4) (+1) (12) Richard Marx - "Should've Known Better" (#4)
5) (+1) (10) Aerosmith - “Dude (Looks Like a Lady)” (#5)
6) (+3) (4) Whitesnake - “Is This Love” (#6)
7) (+1) (8) Cutting Crew - “I’ve Been in Love Before” (#7)
8) (+2) (5) Sting - “We’ll Be Together” (#7)
9) (+2?) (7) Pink Floyd - “Learning to Fly” (#9)
10) (-8) (11) Fleetwood Mac - “Little Lies” (#1 for 2 weeks)

Also, major typo on my part when I was transcribing 6/24 way back: #8 was once again "We All Sleep Alone" by Cher, and #6 on 6/17 really was "Circle in the Sand" from Belinda Carlisle. Meaning Bruce peaked at #7 on 6/10 then dropped.

Finally, couple of guesses: Van Halen made its debut on 11/6 at #15 with "Finish What Ya Started", and on 11/13. "Welcome to the Jungle" from G'n'R debuted. Vixen must have also made it on the chart around this point.

so Metallica's One did make the countdown, I still wonder where it peaked and how long it lasted for.

Looks like Tom Petty's I Won't Back Down may have peaked at #3 instead of #5 as discussed earlier, which would make more sense given it's #5 placement on the year end list.

According to OwenMeany it only lasted 3 weeks and peaked at #16.

He was wrong about Little Liar and Coming Home not making the countdown though, when in fact both were in the top 10.

Anyways, inserting guesses for the next couple weeks until more concrete data is found:

Still haven't found 11/27/87, sadly. :( Here's my stab at it based on prev. week info on 12/3 (all but Whitesnake/Fleetwood Mac are for sure):
1) (+2) (6) Belinda Carlisle - “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” (#1 for 1 weeks)
2) (-1) (7) R.E.M. - “The One I Love” (#1 for 1 week)
3) (=) (4) Bruce Springsteen - “Brilliant Disguise” (#3)
4) (+5) (5) Whitesnake - “Is This Love” (#2) (Typo said this week was #9, but info also displayed Pink Floyd at #9 for this week; more likely guess between 4/5)
5) (-3) (11) Fleetwood Mac - "Little Lies" (2 weeks at #1) (#4 and 5 from this week only missing #s, one from typo; guessing this was the one dropout)
6) (=) (10) Aerosmith - “Dude (Looks Like a Lady)” (#6)
7) (+3) (5) Sting - “We’ll Be Together” (#7)
8) (=) (8) Cutting Crew - “I’ve Been in Love Before” (#8)
9) (+2?) (7) Pink Floyd - “Learning to Fly” (#9)
10) (+5?) (3) George Harrison - “Got My Mind Set On You” (#10)
11) (+?) (6) Yes - “Love Will Find a Way” (#11)

Week of 12/3/87
1) (=) (7) Belinda Carlisle - “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” (#1 for 2 weeks)
2) (+2/3?) (5) Whitesnake - “Is This Love” (#2) (Typo said prev. week was #9, but prev week as seen below was occupied by Pink Floyd)
3) (-1) (8) R.E.M. - “The One I Love” (#1 for 1 week)
4) (-1) (5) Bruce Springsteen - “Brilliant Disguise” (#3)
5) (+1) (11) Aerosmith - “Dude (Looks Like a Lady)” (#5)
6) (+1) (6) Sting - “We’ll Be Together” (#6)
7) (+3) (4) George Harrison - “Got My Mind Set On You” (#7)
8) (=) (9) Cutting Crew - “I’ve Been in Love Before” (#8)
9) (+2) (7) Yes - “Love Will Find a Way” (#9)
10) (-1) (8) Pink Floyd - “Learning to Fly” (#9)

Nice! You are officially the king of excavating obscure local papers for the cause. Nothing too surprising in here I guess but great to see some confirmed top halves from 1989. A few unexpected groaners made the top 10 I see ("Shake for the Sheik" LOL)

Is the newspaper top 10 from 6/30 actually a week late, and really 6/23? Otherwise it conflicts with RS 6/30. If so that would give FYC two weeks at the top instead of Richard Marx, but I think all the other trajectories make sense with that one-week modification.
