I don't recall Phil Collins falling from 3 to 12 (wouldn't be surprised if it was 3 to 10) and Samantha Fox was 16 to 12?
I know Samantha Fox peaked at 10 not sure what week.
The Escape Club's "Shake for the Sheik" peaked at 8 then plunged to 19. I am sure of that.
I believe their trajectory was 18-14-9-8-19
Joan Jett's "Little Liar" was likely the missing entry at 18
On Wikipedia for Pink Floyd it states,
"In December 1988, a video of the live performance from Delicate Sound of Thunder reached number 11 on MTV's Top 20 Video Countdown."

Some of these are correct (from my recall) Some are not (from my recall).
Which newspaper did you get your chart from? Just Curious
For week of 5/5 Howard Jones and Bobby Brown 11 and 10 respectively
I recall Brown's "Every Little Step" trajectory 18-10-7-3-2-1-1-5-12
Howard Jones is in the ballpark 19-17-14-13-11-8-6-5-13
Richard Marx - "Satisfied" had a run of 18-10-6-3-2-1-?-?
Madonna - "Express Yourself" had a run of 15-8-7-2-1-4-6-?-?
Howard Jones fell from 5 to 13 on 6/2/89
Jody Watley "Real Love" fell from 11 to 19 on 6/2/89
John Melloncamp "Pop Singer" trajectory of 20-15-13-12-10-7-5 is correct
Don't recall him peaking at 4. I do recall him dropping from 5 to 15 the following week (6/16)
38 Special's "Second Chance" fell from 9 to 18 on 5/19/89. Their trajectory is right 18-11-6-3-3-9-18
The Cult "Fire Woman" was somewhere in June b/w (6/2 and 6/23) 20-19-16??
Winger's "Seventeen" don't recall exactly but they had a slow burn up the chart like Living Colour's "Cult of Personality"
They both had like a 15 week run (estimated). I recall both of them stalling up the chart once or twice
Winger's Estimated run 20-18-17-16-14-13-12-11-10-10-8-7-6-5-?-? Peaking at 5 on 5/5 or 5/12. Starting on 2/10/89
Winger's "Seventeen" and Def Leppard's "Rocket" you can flip 9 and 8 respectively for 4/21
Def Leppard's "Rocket" 20-17-15-12-10-9-6-5-4-9-15 starting on 2/17/89
Lita Ford/Ozzy looks right 18-14-12-10-8-7-6-4 with the plunge I thought was 4 to 8 to 15 but NKOTB is at 8 for that week
NKOTB's 16-9-4-4 looks good to me, don't know about the way down though

This is what I have for the Week of 6/30/89:
Cyndi Lauper's "I Drove All Night" peaked at 10 then dropped to 19. Trajectory unsure of
Jody Watley's "Friends" jumped from 19 to 17
Either Brown "Every Little Step" or Cherry "Buffalo Stance" were at 19
Bobby Browns "Every Little Step" fell from 12 to 19. 18-10-7-3-2-1-1-5-12-19?
Neneh Cherry I know peaked at 2 then fell from 2-8-19.
I'm NOT 100% sure what her trajectory was
Tom Petty - "I Won't Back Down" only peaked at 5 (6/30 & 7/7) then fell to 12
4 9 and 13 unsure of for week of 6/30

That's all I recall for now. This was HUGE on your part. Thank You

Winnipeg Free Press, via newspaperarchive.com.

I thought about Winger having a slow trajectory, but had trouble wedging that in amongst the other vids.

The 1st batch you gave me from February 3 - March 24 I notice a few paradoxes

For 2/3 I don't recall Phil Collins falling from 3 to 12.
Wouldn't be surprised if Phil Collins was at 11 and Information Society at 12
For 2/17 Wouldn't be surprised if Debbie Gibson and Samantha Fox traded places 17 and 14
With Debbie having a 17-9-3-1 run. I do recall Samantha Fox falling from 10-14
For 2/24 Information Society was stuck at 6 but for the following week (3/3) they fall off the chart completely which I know didn't happen
For 3/10 Edie Brickell fell from 7 to 14. I do recall that
Def Leppard's "Rocket" started on 2/17 with a run of 20-17-15-12-10-9-6-5-4-9-15 peaking at 4 on 4/14 via RS
For 3/24 don't recall U2 ft./BB King debuting at 20. I know they peaked at 15 sometime in late March (3/31)?

All the others still working at it.

Only my top 10s are confirmed. Information Society was a guess, though I would buy them getting pushed next to another descending vid. Tone Loc spent 8 weeks on the chart with Wild Thing according to one of the breaks. Just changed both to a guess where Loc dropped to #20 on 3/3 and Information Society to #18. (Though Loc could have dropped to #19.)

"When Love Comes to Town" premiered on the channel the week of 3/24 according to the playlists.

"Rocket" reached #10 on 3/24, 3 weeks before reaching #4. Had that been its 5th week on the chart, its debut would be the week of 2/24.

Then I am likely off by a week with "Rocket". Tone Loc I know dropped to 19.
The only time that I saw a video drop to 20 was Van Halen "Top of the World" or "Right Now" in 1992.
Never seen it happen from the time I watched from late 88-early 89 through 1993

Yeah. It was "Right Now" that dropped to #20. Totally out of left field.

BTW, around what point in late '88 do you remember first watching the countdown?

December of 88. I have very vague memories of it. I do recall Duran Duran"s "I Don't Want Your Love" at the top
and Poison's "Every Rose has it's Thorn" take their 1-6-12-19 ride down the chart.
Also Chicago's "Look Away" and Eddie Money's "Walk on Water" creeping in the top 5
I stopped watching around late 92-Early 93.

Unfortunately not. I tried to piece together through other comments.
There is a huge gap from November 4 1988 thru September 8 1989 (44 Weeks)

Also got one for 9/30 from there that contradicted our original source:

Week of 9/30 (top 10 according to Winnipeg Free Press):

19) (Re-entry) (2) Motley Crue - "Dr. Feelgood" (#19)
20) (Debut) (1) The B-52s - "Love Shack" (#20)

ETA: Took a few leaps of logic, including adding another week for Debbie Gibson at #6 with "Electric Youth" since little else was being played in at least Active rotation that hadn't yet run its course.

Also, some of the guesses I made for trajectories were probably off, as they mostly followed similar trajectories (5th week at 10 after a #20 debut, fast videos making top 10 in their 2nd week after a high debut). But there's only so much I can do with so little info.

Awesome stuff! This does recollect some of my memory

Doobie Brothers "Doctor" had a run of 20-15-9-6-4-9-15
Great White "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" I thought their run was 20-15-12-9-6-4-2-1-5-13 or 20-15-9-6-4-2-1-5-13
Love and Rockets run was 20-12-6-5-5-10-16
Milli Vanilli 's "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" had a run of 17-14-7-3-2-1-6-12 debuting on 8/19
Living Colour's Glamour Boys" had a run of 20-18-15-13-12-11-8-7-5-7-15
Katrina and The Waves "That's the Way" had a run of 20-19-18
Cher's "If I Could Turn back Time" Debuted at 17 with a run of 17-15-12-9-7-6-4-2-2-7-15
Winger "Headed for a Heartbreak" 18-13-11-8-6-5-3-3-8-14
Fine Young Cannibal's "Baby Don't Look Back" Debuted at 16 with a run of 16-10-7-6-3-3-10-17 debuting on 8/26
Don't doubt you on Don Henley "End of the Innocence" dont recall him peaking at 3
I recall his run as 13-11-9-7-5-4-4-11-18 he debuted the same week as Paula Abdul "Cold Hearted"
New Kids on the Block "Hangin' Tough" (Debuting at #16) same week as Henley and Abdul
Jeff Healy's "Angel Eyes" had a run of 18-14-11-8-6-5-11

The other entry's and Blank spots conflict with what you got. 60% of my entries matched up with yours
and MOST of that was from sheer recollection before you gave the Winnipeg Free Press top 10's

Nice. Did you check out any of the guesses I filled in for Jan. - June?

As you can see though some of those slots (i. e. Angel Eyes going from 8-5) contradict the Winnipeg FP list. And "The Doctor" debuting at #20 on the given week of 6/9 clashes with what you gave for "Fire Woman" from the Cult, which would have debuted that same week at #20.

My personal notes, taken as I was actually watching the show, are, as previously posted:

3 3 Fine Young Cannibals - Don't look back
4 11 Janet Jackson - Miss you much
5 9 The Cure - Love song
6 1 Milli Vanilli - Girl I'm gonna miss you
7 7 Tom Petty - Running down a dream
8 10 Starship - It's not enough
9 6 Warrant - Heaven
10 12 Living colour - Glamour boys
11 14 Tears for fears - Sowing the seeds of love
12 13 Rolling stones - Mixed emotions
13 8 Skid row - 18 and life
14 15 Aerosmith - Love in an elevator
15 20 Roxette - Listen to your heart
16 17 Prince - Partyman
17 ??
18 19 Elton John - Healing hands
19 5 Neneh Cherry - Kisses On The Wind
20 NE The B-52's - Love shack

As I mentioned though, my notes are full of corrections, smudges and faded numbers, so by all means consider the newspaper version as the correct one.

Thanks for your input!

No problem!

I do wonder about some of the trajectories though, as some of the early disappearances cause a bit of a void for lack of other videos to fill in the spots. Medium rotation videos were always rare on the countdown, for one.

Skipped the Buzz Bin and Hip Clip lists since they had nothing of note at the moment. Sneak Preview vids were Exclusives. The numbers of each vid represented weeks in rotation not counting week of debut (i. e. a video with 2 next to it was really in its 3rd week in rotation).

Hey cool find! I love seeing these glimpses into the uncharted part of 1985.

You might recall that waaaaay back on page 2 of this thread I posted the following first two Rolling Stone Top 20 chart publications from May 1985, and this clip seems to confirm what I had long suspected; that their "May 10" chart was really from the week of May 17, and therefore these were actually lists of the consecutive weeks 5/17 and 5/24 (not unusual for RS to mis-date in this way):

"Week of 5/10/85" (apparently 5/17/85 in reality)
1) Tears for Fears – Everybody Wants to Rule the World
2) Simple Minds – Don’t You (Forget About Me)
3) Madonna – Crazy for You
4) Eurythmics – Would I Lie to You?
5) Wham! – Everything She Wants
6) Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers – Don’t Come Around Here No More
7) Sade – Smooth Operator
8) Mick Jagger – Lucky in Love
9) Murray Head – One Night in Bangkok
10) Power Station – Some Like it Hot
11) Julian Lennon – Say You’re Wrong
12) DeBarge – Rhythm of the Night
13) Harold Faltermeyer – Axel F Theme
14) Howard Jones – Things Can Only Get Better
15) USA for Africa – We are the World
16) Phil Collins – Sussudio
17) John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band – Tough All Over
18) Robert Plant – Little By Little
19) Don Henley – All She Wants to Do is Dance
20) Katrina & the Waves – Walking on Sunshine

Week of 5/24/85
1) Tears for Fears – Everybody Wants to Rule the World
2) Simple Minds – Don’t You (Forget About Me)
3) Wham! – Everything She Wants
4) Eurythmics – Would I Lie to You?
5) Robert Plant – Little By Little
6) Howard Jones – Things Can Only Get Better
7) Harold Faltermeyer – Axel F Theme
8) Sade – Smooth Operator
9) Mick Jagger – Lucky in Love
10) Phil Collins – Sussudio
11) Madonna – Crazy for You
12) John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band – Tough All Over
13) Julian Lennon – Say You’re Wrong
14) Power Station – Some Like it Hot
15) Bryan Adams – Heaven
16) Murray Head – One Night in Bangkok
17) David Lee Roth – Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody
18) Glenn Frey – Smuggler’s Blues
19) Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers – Don’t Come Around Here No More
20) ‘Til Tuesday – Voices Carry

The "real" 5/10 chart would have had Simple Minds in their 5th and final week at #1, a third week for Tears for Fears at #2, etc.

Surprised about Don Henley stalling out at #10 based on his high year-end placement, I'd expected somewhere in the Top 5. Longevity seems to be a pretty major factor in the year-end chart for '85.

I guess Katrina & the Waves must have re-entered later on, based on info from the year-end show that they spent 7 weeks on the chart, unless Mark G. had the wrong data (entirely possible, as we know...)

Maybe Don Henley peaked a bit higher a little earlier then dropped to #10. The countdown was erratic back then. IIRC Wham debuted at #15 according to a commercial break (that also stated it peaked at #3 and spent 9 wks. in total on the chart).

What's weird is that according to Billboard's back issues, "Rhythm of the Night" by DeBarge was listed under Light rotation practically its entire run. We've seldom seen videos with less than active (or stress in the 90s) rotation make the countdown.

Yes, that's definitely possible. In fact "Glory Days" did just that later in the summer, getting to #2 quickly before hanging out in the bottom of the top ten for a few weeks (according to RS).

Wonder how we could get this Pannoni guy to focus his efforts on posting more countdowns from the 84-85 timeframe...

Pannoni can only post whatever he acquires, which is always random, and time consuming (converting tapes to digital). Anytime we ever get anything top 20 related is pure luck, especially if it's a regular (non-special edition/remote) top 20.

Here's a clip from 10/14/89 of an Eurythmics interview before their video at #18:

Here are some fragments of the 8/12/89 episode from the Moscow Music Peace Festival. And by fragments, I mean everything snipped but the band interviews, which annoyingly leaves out some of the video info. Hope whoever has it taped the entire episode. From what little I saw there were also recaps, which were also snipped.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNQJgCiu7IQ

(tape ends beyond this point)
8) (-5) (8) Bon Jovi - "Lay Your Hands on Me" (1 week at #1)
9) (+1) (7?) Jody Watley featuring Eric B. and Rakim - "Friends" (#9)
