Turkey will stop teaching evolution in schools, education ministry says

Turkish schoolchildren will no longer be taught about evolution, a government official has said, in another sign of the conservative direction the country is heading in under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Alpaslan Durmus, the head of curriculum for the ministry of education, said that Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution was “controversial” and would be removed from school programmes by 2019.

“We have excluded controversial subjects for students at an age unable yet to understand the issues’ scientific background,” Mr Durmus said.

“As the students at ninth grade are not endowed with antecedents to discuss the ‘Origin of Life and Evolution’ section in biology classes, this section will be delayed until undergraduate study.”

The proposal to strip evolution from the curriculum was included in a draft proposal that has already been approved by Mr Erdogan, Mr Durmus said. The final curriculum will be released next week.

The move is part of what secular critics describe as a creeping strain of Islamism throughout Turkey’s once proudly secular state.

A group of Turkish academics criticised the move saying that it put Turkey in the same category as Saudi Arabia, where the deeply religious curriculum forbids the teaching of evolution.

You know what they say: the truth hurts. A fall in skepticism will make it easier to turn people into Erdogan-worshipping sheep, considering that most religions say you should obey your leaders. Worrying how the world is changing for the worse each day...

The biggest problem are the people not living in the Turkey, the majority of them voted for him, and they don't have, ironically, to live under his regime. If there was some Karmagod, all those who voted for him living somewhere else, should return to Turkey and be forced to live there under his regime.
But honey I'll be seein' you down every road...

OMG! This is truly shocking! For real, we're in 2017 and people are still stuck in beliefs from 1000 years ago!!! These kids will be brainwashed to believe something that is not proven. So wrong!

I have never experienced that myself, I don't think it's a thing in public schools but might be in the small private religious ones. I do remember though one professor in biology class simply saying something like "You might all have different beliefs about how we evolved and what not, but for this class simply follow what the textbook says and answer that on the quizzes/test even if it's not what you believe actually happened"

The internet will overpower any government in this day and age. The facts are out there and accessible, in our global community, it's not possible to shelter people anymore without going to North Korea levels of subjugation.

That's exactly what's happening here though. You can't access Wikipedia from Turkey. It's banned.

I used to plan to move to another country but the world is so effed up, it won't make a difference. So far i'm safe and sound in my hometown and Europe is more dangerous with possible terror attacks every minute.
