Donald Trump Says Transgender People No Longer Allowed To Serve In Military
He cites “tremendous medical costs and disruption” as his reason. Data show he’s wrong.

WASHINGTON ― President Donald Trump tweeted Wednesday that transgender people will no longer be allowed to serve in the U.S. military “in any capacity” ― a stunning reversal of an Obama-era policy that affects thousands of service members.

The move was wholly unexpected. It’s not clear why Trump decided to announce such a significant policy change via Twitter or when it would take effect. His timing is also odd: He shared the news in the midst of Senate Republicans’ high-stakes fight to repeal Obamacare this week.

Trump claims he made the move after consulting with military experts, despite the Pentagon lifting the ban on transgender service members in 2016 after an exhaustive review of its military readiness policies.

“Our mission is to defend this country, and we don’t want barriers unrelated to a person’s qualification to serve preventing us from recruiting or retaining the soldier, sailor, airman or Marine who can best accomplish the mission,” then-Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said. “We have to have access to 100% of America’s population for our all-volunteer force to be able to recruit from among them the most highly qualified — and to retain them.”

The biggest question is what the news means for the thousands of transgender men and women currently serving in the military. There are between 1,320 and 6,630 transgender people in active military service, a Rand Corp. study estimates. Another group, the Palm Center, put the number as high as 15,500 a few years ago.

The Pentagon referred all questions about the change to the White House.

One thing that is clear is that conservatives have been gunning for this change. The right-wing Family Research Council was among the first out with a statement praising Trump for taking the step.

“I applaud President Trump for keeping his promise to return to military priorities ― and not continue the social experimentation of the Obama era that has crippled our nation’s military,” said the group’s president, Tony Perkins. “The military can now focus its efforts on preparing to fight and win wars rather than being used to advance the Obama social agenda.”

Rep. Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.), who unsuccessfully tried to deny hormone therapy and gender transition-related care to transgender troops during debate on a defense spending bill this month, also hailed Trump for being concerned about the cost of providing care to transgender service members.

But those costs are incredibly low: Rand Corp. estimates 30 to 140 people would seek new hormone treatments per year, and 25 to 130 would seek gender transition-related surgeries. That amounts to a 0.04 to 0.13 percent increase in the Defense Department’s total health care spending, per Rand.

The American Medical Association has emphasized the medical necessity of mental health care, hormone therapy and gender-transition surgery as forms of therapeutic treatment for people diagnosed with gender dysphoria, a “serious medical condition” that stems from the distress a person feels when his or her gender identity does not correspond with his or her birth sex. Not all transgender people are diagnosed with gender dysphoria; some don’t experience that distress.

LGBTQ rights groups slammed Trump for making the change solely to appease his conservative base.

“This has been studied extensively, and the consensus is clear: There are no cost or military readiness drawbacks associated with allowing trans people to fight for their country,” said Joshua Block, senior staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union’s LGBT & HIV Project. “The president is trying to score cheap political points on the backs of military personnel who have put their lives on the line for their country.”

Gregory Angelo, the president of Log Cabin Republicans, a group that represents LGBTQ conservatives, said Trump’s move “smacks of politics, pure and simple.”

“The United States military already includes transgender individuals who protect our freedom day in and day out,” Angelo said. “Excommunicating transgender soldiers only weakens our readiness; it doesn’t strengthen it.”

The president’s action completely contradicts his 2016 campaign claims about being better for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans than his Democratic opponent, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Trump dodged the draft a total of five times, once arguing he couldn’t serve in the U.S. military because of bone spurs in his heels.

I think this is signifcant enough thaat we can separate it from the Trump topic and then it saves discussion being spread across that topic and the LGBT topic.

I personally think that the way he went about announcing this was one of the worst and most disgusting acts of any politician I have ever seen.

This is probably the biggest single attack on the LGBT community in America since gay marriage was taken to the Supreme Court - I'm not saying the two things are the same but they amount to the same in that one's identity is the reason they are denied equality under law.

Praise the Lord that this attack has come in 2017 - as quite frankly, the LGBT community's own attitude to the two T's (transsexual and transgender) has been less than stellar over the years and only recently have we really started to unite under the umbrella.

I hope that LGBT people across America unite and I hope that this makes it to the Supreme Court. I'd be keen to understand why this is suddenly an issue - has there been an outbreak of unstable transgender people in the military that I'm not aware of?

UK military chiefs praise transgender troops

Commanders from British armed forces have opposed any ban on transgender people serving in the military.

It comes after Donald Trump said that transgender people would not be allowed in the US military due to "tremendous" medical costs and disruption.

But British officials have supported people serving in the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.

Commander of UK Maritime Forces Rear Admiral Alex Burton tweeted: "I am so glad we are not going this way."

The Obama administration decided last year to allow transgender people to serve openly in the US military.

But in June, Defence Secretary James Mattis agreed to a six-month delay in the recruitment of transgender people.

Now President Trump has posted a series of tweets saying: "After consultation with my generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the US military.

"Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail."

'Bringing diversity'

In response, Rear Admiral Burton of the Royal Navy tweeted: "As a Royal Navy LGBT champion and senior warfighter I am so glad we are not going this way."

And Second Sea Lord Vice Admiral Jonathan Woodcock tweeted: "So proud of our transgender personnel. They bring diversity to our Royal Navy and I will always support their desire to serve their country.

"I suspect many who doubt the abilities of our diverse service personnel might be more reluctant to serve than they are to comment."

In February, the Army's LGBT champion, Lieutenant General Patrick Sanders said: "Only if individuals are free to be themselves can we release the genie of their potential."

Each of Britain's armed forces welcomes transgender people to serve.

The Ministry of Defence told the BBC that President Trump's tweets were "an American issue".

A spokesman added: "We are clear that all LGBT members of our armed forces play a vital role in keeping our nation safe. We will continue to welcome people from a diverse range of backgrounds, including transgender personnel."

BBC defence correspondent Jonathan Beale said the MoD would not provide the number of transgender people serving in the British military, but that one source had told him there were fewer than 10.

I have a sneaking suspicion this was a piece of advice from Steve Bannon.
We will have to watch all of Obama's legislative efforts being overturned.

Democrats are still too nice. They will lose... because by 2020 Trump will run on the slogan: Make blacks slaves again... or sth which will give him billions of votes from rural america.

However, by then California will be its own country, hopefully.

This is the first major blow to the LGBT community. Sadly, I suspect there will be more to come. :(

I'd love for the "substantial medical costs and disruption" portion of his disgusting message to be substantiated. What's the figure of these burdensome costs, and what disruption do transgender military members cause?

We have so many idiotic people in this country who defend any piece of shit idea Head Cheeto comes up with. I'm so embarrassed to be American right now. Please know that many of us are appalled and disgusted by this man representing our country.

The cost-cutting defense is pure window dressing. Because eliminating gender reassignment surgery - really? That's the plan to cut the military's costs? And Trump supporters elected him for his brilliance as a businessman? OK.

The Washington Post reported that the military spends five times more on Viagra than gender reassignment. Clearly this isn't about cost. It's only about discrimination.

He's a dictator, no different from any of the others who wanted to rule in other countries.
I'm not gay or bi, but I believe in equal rights and human rights. Don't know how my county gave him the power.

He's a moron, a pure and simple moron that's doing the US no favours.

This is for his base. They don't agree with this "social experiment" the same way they didn't agree with desegregation of the army, another "social experiment".

How rude to call this a social experiment, when these trans soldiers fight and protect for this country the same way other soldiers do.

The fact that he thinks those in peril should have a right to choose who saves them is appalling. I would think that if someone attempted to take his life, he wouldn't give a damn who saved him as long as he was safe. Why he can't afford the rest of Americans the same gratuity is beyond me.

But then.... hands up who's surprised by this?
