A 20-year-old from Florida says he plans to "have some fun" after being named sole winner of a $451m (£330m) lottery jackpot.
Shane Missler matched five numbers and a bonus ball to scoop the fourth largest win in the US game's history.
He opted to receive a one-time payment of $282m, instead of the full amount over a longer period of time.
Mr Missler said he had a feeling he could win on the night of the Mega Millions draw, says a press release.
Minutes after the draw a week ago he posted on Facebook: "Oh. My. God."
Mr Missler presented his winning ticket at the state lottery headquarters in Tallahassee on Friday, accompanied by his father and a lawyer.
He said he has big plans for his winnings.
"I'm only 20, but I hope to use it to pursue a variety of passions, help my family and do some good for humanity," said Mr Missler, according to the statement.

I always felt like playing the lottery was a huge waste of money not dissimilar to gambling as the odds are impossibly low but then I read stories like this and feel tempted.

Good for him. If I ever won the lottery I would opt to remain anonymous - never understood why people want to publicise (officially via the Lottery) their win. I’d be buying an island so quick and go into hiding in my own little paradise

Reminded me of:

Not that it matters when you're in that territory of money, but he'll actually cash $282 million and not $451 million - can't believe he opted to give up nearly $200 million for a quicker payment!

same... I would buy a GREAT house for myself... or build one and continue to work where I'm currently employed. I'd spend so much on my family though. I'd grant everyone ONE wish regardless of what they want... (well in the range of up to $500,000).

They pay the entire sum in 20 years? Or maybe longer. Who knows what will happen by then? I would've done the same. $282m isn't a bad amount to cash in

It does matter actually, and if the 'longer period' is 20 years as spiritboy said, this future value calculator shows all you would need is a rate of 2.4% or higher to get more than $451 million at the end of the 20 years. You have some very low-risk treasury bonds in some countries that'll give you at least that much interest in your investment. The time value of money is no joke!

+1

I also hear about people who won in the lottery and died 5 years later due to living unhealthily, getting depressed or losing all the money altogether due to bad investments...

There is the story about a man here who won 20 million DM (Deutsche Mark) in like 1994... and who bought cars and houses and drugs etc... who blew through the money in 2 years and then died... his widow is now living off welfare. :o
