This got old so fast. I wish that her next album is really more soul R&B than this plastic R&B pop. This isn't a bad album but she's still in that mainstream bubble of hip hop radio-ready features kind of songs.
Since she came to Manila, I listened to a lot of her records again (like the old days) and Caution doesn't seem to show much musical progression after The Emancipation of Mimi. As much as "With You" does not indicate what the album sounded like, it was foreshadowing that she was still going to do the same juvenile kind of chorus lyrics and young love themes. "Giving Me Life" showed that she can do something out of the box and unexpected, it's a shame that after that song, she went back to the "Make It Look Good" and "It's a Wrap" kind of mood (which is nice but too predictable).
She is still torn between not going too R&B but still avoiding pop just like in E=MC², Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel and The Elusive Chanteuse. I think she was trying to achieve that with The Elusive Chanteuse with songs like "The Art of Letting Go" and some of the fan faves on that record, but it wasn't strong enough.
As much as I wasn't a fan of ANTI or Lemonade as whole albums, I think female R&B artists like Beyoncé and Rihanna have explored further and have more eclectic sounds, I wish Mariah had that album. Don't get me wrong, she pushed boundaries and hip hop culture with albums like Daydream and Butterfly, but after that (with the exception of The Emancipation of Mimi), I hope she becomes bolder and more experimental.
