Since Christina Aguilera is the third and last of the New Mickey Mouse Club alumni to hit the charts in the mid-'90s -- following two members of 'N Sync and Britney Spears -- it's easy for cynical observers to assume that she was the lesser of the three talents since she arrived last after everyone scaled the charts. That's not the case at all. If anything, Aguilera is the best of the three, blessed with a rich voice that's given the material it deserves. Her eponymous debut remains firmly within the teen-oriented dance-pop genre, but unlike Spears' album, this is done right. The songwriting is strong -- the ballads are engaging, the dance numbers are catchy -- the production is clean and uncluttered, letting Aguilera's voice take the foreground. Most impressively, she not only has charisma, she can actually sing, bringing conviction to these love and heartbreak songs. So, Christina Aguilera may be lightweight, but it's lightweight in the best possible sense -- breezy, fun, engaging, and enjoyable on each repeated listen. Out of the deluge of teen-pop albums in 1999, this feels like the best of the lot.

this was a great album suitable for the era of pop princess, some great tracks like genie, i turn to you, WAGW, so emotional... other mediocre fillers like love for all seasons... and the very first song she recorded obvious

a great start for a legend!! :D

I've always found this album dissapointing. It sounds very rushed, but it definitely stands out against other bubblegum pop records IMO. "Come On Over" is still one of my favourite Christina singles to date.

The best on the album is "Genie in a Bottle", I also like the video versions of "What a Girl Wants" and "Come On Over", also I would pick "I Turn To You" and "So Emotional" which should've been a single!.

Her worst album but one of the best pop albums of 90s.

I still remember listening to "Genie in a bottle" in 1999/2000 but didn't know the name of the artist

Anyway, it was a good start for her career 8-)

I like this album! Also the 2000 VMA performance shows how much she has grown vocally.

Not by far! :-? Christina Aguilera was made for commercial success and besides the single tracks (and "Reflection") the album hasn't got any particularly good tracks on it.

Sorry for being brutally honest, but that came at least from a Christina fan since Day 1.

I kinda agree with Loose, the album is rather disappointing when it comes to the album tracks. I think Love Will Find A Way is the best out of them.

It was a crime that So Emotional was cancelled as a single release to make way for that bloody Ricky Martin duet!!

I think that it has sold over 9,000,000 copies in the US and shipped around 10,000,000 copies. It should have been certified Diamond by now.

Anyway, her worst album, but a very solid teen-pop album, better than Brit's respective debut. Nevertheless, less catchy IMO.

Her two next releases were 100% better. Also can't understand why the album went merely platinum in the UK, while it produced one #1 single, one #3 hit, one #8 hit and one #19 hit! She also was staggeringly famous back then worldwide. I mean she was an idol just like Brit. Her platinum certification there doesn't make any sense to me! :o
