Well I have access to those charts.

Did a quick lookup and came up with the following for 'Never':

R&B Singles & Tracks
21-02-2004: *71*-77-74-77-80-85-100-96

Hot 100 Singles Sales:
10-04-2004: 30-27-*26*-34-43-40-52-60-73-74

Thanks hanboo. This must be the chart I am thinking of. It seems to be regarded by many as official.

Again, it took me some time (but I love it :D ) and here it is:

Elton JOHN on the UK Charts
Hanboo's data versus various charts books and sources.

Verdict? I couldn't believe it first, but after checking the stuff again and again... Yes, that's true. I didn't find any major discrepancies comparing the runs. :o :)
So your data, Hanboo, is absolutely correct, in every way.
I am sure you will be glad to hear it. Congratulations!

BTW One minor discrepancy found was easy to verify. The Complete Book was wrong, not you!

I forgot to add that Guinness Book Of British Hit Singles includes the folowing single under Elton John banner:

THAT'S WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR (Arista)
16 85-11-09 9
Charity record with proceeds donated to the American Foundation for AIDS research. Originally recorded by Rod Stewart.
Above hit: Dionne and Friends featuring Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder
Complete Book doesn't! They give only "see also" notice. For my own purposed I decided to include the single under Elton John.
-------------------------------------------------
PS Now, if I could have three wishes right know they would be updated charts runs for Led Zeppelin - page 14, Queen (I know you corrected a few albums separately but could you do them all at once?) - page 18 - and Genesis (page 30). Thank you! :)

Hanboo or someone else, pls check the followings if they are correct!

1. Billboard Hot100 (08/03/1980)
Artist name is OK?
I Don't Need You Anymore - Together? (Original Soundtrack Recording) Feat. Jackie DeShannon

2. Billboard Hot100 (26/04/1980)
Shared Nr.98's:
98. (NEW) WHAT'S YOUR HURRY DARLIN' - Ironhorse
98. (88) DON'T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA - Festival

Many thanx in advance!

The charts at the time (US and UK) had only the "and friends" credit. And yes, we know who these "friends" are, but we also know who "USA For Africa" are, but should they all be credited?

The Hot 100 chart at the time only credited "Jackie DeShannon", Joel Whitburn's chart book has your credit, which is, I think, a rediculous credit, as "Together?" is the title of the film, it's not an act. Conclusion : not correct.

No, incorrect, it should be #98 and #99 resp.
The Hot 100 NEVER had shared chart positions.

1. Billboard Hot100 (08/03/1980)
Artist name is OK?
I Don't Need You Anymore - Together? (Original Soundtrack Recording) Feat. Jackie DeShannon
The Hot 100 chart at the time only credited "Jackie DeShannon", Joel Whitburn's chart book has your credit, which is, I think, a rediculous credit, as "Together?" is the title of the film, it's not an act. Conclusion : not correct.

2. Billboard Hot100 (26/04/1980)
Shared Nr.98's:
98. (NEW) WHAT'S YOUR HURRY DARLIN' - Ironhorse
98. (88) DON'T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA - Festival
No, incorrect, it should be #98 and #99 resp.
The Hot 100 NEVER had shared chart positions.
Thanks Hanboo! 8-)

Hanboo, I was thinking (and looking) the Billboard albums chart from 1974-1975 and my conclusion (and question) is: what the hell happened with the chart runs?
Some albums were on the Top 200 for only 10-15 weeks with more than 5 on the Top 10 and with very high drops.
The 1974-75 chart runs for George Harrison are very clear examples, Rock'n Roll from John Lennon is another example with 15 weeks on chart, 5 on the Top 10 and the last position on the week 15 was #128 and then out. Some Rolling Stones' albums the same with IORR at No. 1, 7 weeks on the Top 10 and then the album dropped as a stone and the last position was #142 on the week 20!
On this days the short chart runs with high peak positions (I remember Madonna's "American Life" at No. 1 with 14 weeks on chart) are more probable because usually on the week 1 the album get the peak position and the most high sales but on those days with albums climbing for weeks and then falling strong I don't know if that positions were true on that times. Maybe you have some stats from the pre-Soundscan era with the high peak positions for albums with less weeks on chart, or Top 10 albums with little weeks on chart and stuff like that, but is interesting see that.
What do you think of that charts? Were all true?

Another short question about the US singles on the 60's and 70's is about the weeks on charts. On this days, the singles are removed from the chart if the song falls bellow the Top 50 after 20 weeks on chart.
And before?
How were the rules on the 60's and 70's for chart runs like this:
84-73-61-50-50-50-*47*-47 (8 wks)
67-43-31-24-*23*-23-31 (7 wks)
66-27-19-15- *10*-14-14-18-33 (9/1 wks)

Thanks for any information that you can post.

Sorry, I don't have the Bubbling Under chart info in my database. I do have peaks and weeks info though (from Whitburns book).

Well, that's a very difficult question to answer. Weird chart runs on the Hot 100 can be explained by changing chart rules and methodologies, mixing of airplay and sales points, etc.
But, as far as I know, until the Soundscan era there were no specific chart rules for the album chart.
It was always the list with the bestselling albums. The only excluded albums in that era were mid-price and budget albums. I never read about manipulation on the album chart (which happened a lot on the Hot 100).

I did some research on average weeks in the 1970's and it appears you're right.
Here are the top 10 album stats:

Code: Select all
(year, number of top 10 albums, average weeks on chart)
1970  51  53.6
1971  48  51.8
1972  67  50.9
1973  63  68.8
1974  67  39.5
1975  73  40.3
1976  60  50.9
1977  59  45.7
1978  56  45.0
1979  51  40.9

The first line means: 51 albums which entered the chart in 1970, peaked in the top 10 and stayed for an average of 53.6 weeks on the overall chart.

The average weeks in 1974 dropped from 68.8 to 39.5. However looking at preceding years (1970-72), the drop was not so significant.

Looking at the other albums in the chart (see the next table), the same effect occurs in the top 40, and much less in the overall chart.

Code: Select all
(year, total number of albums, average weeks on chart, number of top 40 albums, average weeks on chart)
1970  591  17.0  159  38.3
1971  615  16.4  155  36.2
1972  620  18.5  163  38.1
1973  563  21.0  160  44.7
1974  525  17.7  182  31.0
1975  651  16.5  210  31.2
1976  598  17.3  177  34.7
1977  613  16.7  178  31.8
1978  574  18.7  184  34.7
1979  584  17.2  178  31.6

Let's look at the actual album sales then. Note that only since 1973 the unit sales are known, before that, only the dollar values.

Code: Select all
Record Sales 1973-79 in million units.
(year, singles, albums, LP/EP, cassettes, 8-tracks)
1973  228,0  386,0  280,0  15,0  91,0
1974  204,0  388,0  276,0  15,3  96,7
1975  164,0  367,8  257,0  16,2  94,6
1976  190,0  400,9  273,0  21,8  106,1
1977  190,0  508,2  344,0  36,9  127,3
1978  190,0  536,2  341,3  61,3  133,6
1979  195,5  505,8  318,3  82,8  104,7

We may see the answer here, 1975 overall US record sales dropped more than 10%! Album sales with 5.2%, 20 million units less. Singles sales -20%.
This must be connected with the 1973/74 oil crisis and mabe (?) shortage in vinyl.

The albums you mentioned (George Harrison, John Lennon, Rolling Stones) were all, let's say, "disappointing" in quality. Harrison's "All things must pass" was much better,
Lennon's "Imagine" ditto. The Stones' output in 1974/75 was a low, certainly if compared with their magnicifent 1968-72 output.
This must have influenced their chart runs.

Draw your own conclusions....

Thanks for any information that you can post.
Another "short" question? I'd like to see a long question from you!

Anyway this one can be easily answered.

Since 1963/64 singles on the Hot 100 were removed once they fell below #30 and experienced more than one week of declining points.
Somewhere around 1967/68 the #30 rule was relaxed to #40.

In June 1973 this rule was dropped, probably due to the declining sales of singles (see above post).
For the first time since 1963, older singles could be found in the lower reaches of the Hot 100.

In 1977 a minimum point system for singles to debut on the Hot 100 was introduced.
If a single didn't exceed the minimum points set by Billboard, it couldn't enter the chart, even if it had more points than #70.
As a result, there were almost no debuts in the #91-100 region and the latter was clogged with older singles dropping.

Also in 1974-75, a lot of #1 records suddenly dropped to positions outside the top 10.
That was caused by "chart watching" - some radio stations dropped songs from their playlists completely once it hit #1.
They still played the record, but didn't report it to Billboard anymore.

Hope that answers your question.

Thanks for all the explanations, Hanboo!
You information is very good and all the data and stats helped a lot, at least to me.

I see that you have the Bubbling Peak Positions and weeks. Can be this a request? Bubbling positions and weeks for Beatles and Rolling Stones?
Thanks!

Thanks Jeff for the Bubbling Under info on The Beatles!

Here's the bubbling info on the The Rolling Stones:

30/01/1965 What A Shame 124
02/06/1993 Sweet Thing (Mick Jagger) 110
07/30/1994 Love Is Strong 110-111
01/28/1995 You Got Me Rocking 113-117
12/02/1995 Like A Rolling Stone 109
02/28/1998 Saint Of Me 102

BTW These only include singles which didn't reach the Hot 100.

I also checked the Album Bubbling Under charts: no entries there for the Stones (neither for the Fab 4).

Somewhere around 1967/68 the #30 rule was relaxed to #40.
Han,Thank you for very interesting information!
I want to know in detail about this system. Please give an example, if possible.
