Aaah, those books again...
I've compared the chart runs for two famous "prisonery" albums of Johnny Cash.
(Han, please post up-to-date chart runs, thank you!
I took the runs for Johnny Cash At San Quentin
album from Page 28. Also got Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison
album from old Dotmusic archives (saved on my own PC way back in Aug 2003).
The Complete Book Of The British Charts '04 (Complete Book) and Guinness Book Of The British Hit singles & Albums '04(Guinness Book) don't print the particular runs/peaks for every year but even total number of weeks don't match.
Here is the data concerned:
Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison
Han's data: 52
Complete Book: 53
Guinness Book: 45
Johnny Cash At San Quentin
Han's data: 115
Complete Book: 114
Guinness Book: 106
What a mess!
OK, Han. Here is own my Sherlock Holmes' style investigation. I hope you like it.
Guinness Book recently completed their Hit Singles volume with albums
- for the first time. Hence a few basic errors like not counting
the "famous 8-weeks frozen charts" between 1971-02-06 and 1971-03-27. Considering that it is clear how they could have got their number of weeks for Folsom
album. Well, almost...
According to Han (page 57), the last "normal" published chart for January 30, 1971 has got:
weeks At Folsom Prison
dropped out of the charts right after "frozen weeks", am I right? So we could assume Guinness probably chopped off the last 8 weeks. But how they got 45 (not 44) weeks?! A mystery to me.
Or they had counted in the first "frozen" chart for 1971-02-06?
How about Complete Book? They did
count the "frozen charts", hence 8 weeks more
than at Guinness! But why 53
Han, this is a question for you!
Again, the last "normal" published chart for January 30, 1971:
weeks At San Quentin
And again, Guinness has got 8 weeks less
than it should have had. The Complete Book has got 8 weeks more than Guinness. That also make sense.
But why 114 weeks
in total and not 115
(as Han printed)? Another mystery.
OK. This is a little bit funny.
After adding the weeks for both albums we get:
Han's data: 167
Complete Book: 167
Guinness Book: 151
weeks > as predicted, 16 weeks less
A home work for Han (if he finds the time, of course
). Is there a chart between 1969-08-23 and 1971-01-30 where places for both albums had been switched? I mean, either Folsom
or San Quentin
was out of the charts for a particular week. That would make sense.
BTW In case you wonder. Yes, I had plenty of time.
I am ill (nothing serious) and had to stay home for a week.
