TEASER

It's that time of year again where UKMIXers count down their favourite songs of the year gone by, in their own unique way.

Instead of the traditional countdown that I have done every year since 2002, this year I've decided to do something a bit different, purely because I've grown bored of rating and ranking songs to compile a chart. This year I'm just doing a list instead - 1 for all the songs I liked from 2012 and another for all the songs I disliked. The "likes" list will be up first.

So, I bet you're wondering what you can expect from such a list. Well, lookee here folks, because this is what you might find:
    * Songs from yesteryear.
    * Some album tracks.
    * Loads of songs from Australia (and a few from New Zealand too).
    * Some Forum Song Contest entries from this year.
    * A number of sexy-sounding tunes.
    * The usual eclectic mix of genres.
    * At least one moment where you might think "I didn't expect her to like THAT!". Face it, there's at least one every year. :P
Probably won't start this until New Year's Eve, so sit tight folks. May do a few retrospectives if I can be bothered.
Let's embrace the point of no return.

Looking forward to this chart! Don't know why but I expect many songs I don't know (more than the other years).

Well i'll be waiting eagerly, don't know about everyone else. This forum loses half the members after the holidays. You may get to #26 and find only two people left. :D

Alright, retrospectives time first. Stole the idea from Jim, hopefully that's ok.

I've chosen 6 years from the 10 or so years I've had end of year charts on UKMIX to look back and reflect upon. All of these years hold a special place in me for different reasons. Enjoy.

2004

Image

Ah 2004. The year I celebrated 2 decades on this sphere and had my first ever UKMIX meet-up with fellow member Muzikritik.

It was also the year that I discovered one of my all-time favourite artists in New Zealand singer-songwriter Brooke Fraser, whose debut album was graciously given to me by the aforementioned UKMIXer. Bruv, if you're reading this, I still own your original copy and have thrashed it to death over the years.

In that year, Franz Ferdinand taught us that yes, you can dance to rock & John Mayer picked up where he left off the previous year with 2 tunes that are now firmly in my top 3 favourite songs of his (along with Bigger Than My Body), despite the album from which it came being pretty average IMO.

In other music news from my chart of '04:

The retrospectives will just be for my best of charts, not my worst ones. Too much work there. :lol: Besides, I didn't start my worst of chart until 2005.

The orange background for your retrospective hurts my eyes but maybe they're just being oversensitive. Anyway, I don't know too many from your Top 20 of 2004 but there are a few gems there that I'm familiar with.

"Daughters" is a well-written track. I love the chorus and it's definitely among John Mayer's best. "Run" is an absolute masterpiece. I'd say that Leona's cover was a bit more impressive than the original but Snow Patrol's version is nothing short of brilliance either. The sheer emotion in the track is just amazing.

"Caught In A Moment" is a gorgeous ballad! I don't know the Sugababes's discography very well but I doubt that they've got a stronger ballad in their arsenal than this. Of course, we all love "If I Ain't Got You". It was one of those massive, inescapable crossover hits that radio just massacred but you managed to still love after all the overexposure. It's probably Alicia's signature song and unquestionably one of her best moments. :D
