Aimee Mann's TOP 30: Part 3
Image

It's time to wrap up this list!

10. Little Tornado (@#%&*! Smilers)

9. It's Not (The Forgotten Arm)

8. Going Through The Motions (The Forgotten Arm)

7. Save Me (Magnolia OST)
The song that put her for a little while in the spotlight. Nice opening lines...
"You look like a perfect fit
For a girl in need of a tourniquet"

6. Little Bombs (The Forgotten Arm)

5. Nightmare Girl
I really love this part of the lyrics:
"Things are getting weirder At the speed of light Nightmare girl"

4. That's How I Knew This Story Would Break My Heart (The Forgotten Arm)
Love the title, love the piano, love the lyrics. For me, this is beautiful.

3. Build That Wall (Magnolia OST)
A fantastic song from the Magnolia soundtrack.

2. The Other End Of The Telescope (with Elvis Costello)
LOVE this. I nominated it for one of Wardo's races, but of course failed to make an impact  I love teh guitar, her voice, and the opening lines are beautiful:

Shall we agree that just this once
I'm gonna change my life
Until it's just as tiny or
Important as you like

And in time, we won't even recall that we spoke
Words that turned out to be as big as smoke
Like smoke, disappears in the air
There's always something smouldering somewhere

1. Wise Up (Magnolia OST)
It is sad, but it is raw and real, I love it. The lyrics are again superb. Here it the version from the film, I've never watched it but I think this scene is great. The song starts around 1:05 mins

It's not what you thought
When you first began it
You got what you want
Now you can hardly stand it though
By now you know it's not
Going to stop
It's not going to stop
It's not going to stop
'til you wise up

The second post is updated with Aimee Mann's entries.

She is so far my #1 artist by a large margin, but none of her albums could dethrone A Fine Frenzy.

nice to see you liked some of them.

I do think that one of Aimee's more distinctive qualities are her lyrics. In particular Wise Up is very touching and meaningful.

I just average the points of each song in the album. I rate songs from 0 to 10 (9,75 9,50 9,25 etc) and then the album is just the average.

Tomorrow I'll start posting my Alanis Morissette TOP 50 songs and TOP 7 Albums. In her case, I am not including the two albums released in Canada before her breakthrough Jagged Little Pill.

I'll be also checking similarities and differences with CrazyCrazy list posted here some time ago!

Alanis! Yes! Like I said I reckon my list would look really different particularly the mid-bottom half. :D So Called Chaos is a song that would be much higher this time around for example.

I was surprised by some of your choices! But then I realized I also liked most of them (not the ones from her first two albums, but only because I am not familiar to it and that sound is not my fav, I don't think her voice fits such a pop sound).

Of your 40 songs, 22 are included in my top 50. But again, of the 18 songs left, I can say that they were in my final list while I was trying to come up with just 50.

tbh I was expecting much less similarities. you have a very special and strong music taste! And I mean it in a good way. You really challenge us in all the games! I am a little more pop oriented.

Alanis Morissette's TOP 50: Part 1
Image

It was a pleasure to revise Alanis' discography! And to see her growth as an artist and as a person through her music and lyrics. Here I'll be presenting her top 50 songs, a collection that could have been far more extense but I think it will be representative of her impact in me. Here it is the first part of our story:

50. No Pressure Over Cappuccino (MTV Unplugged) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
I went to see Alanis live everytime she visited Argentina (3 so far). I rememeber her performing this one during the first visit, the JLP Tour. I loved the unplugged version, love the smooth rhythm.

49. Right Through You (Jagged Little Pill) (CrazyCrazy: #35)
Angry Alanis is great!

48. Front Row (Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie) (CrazyCrazy: #15)
Opening track from her second album. After the big success of JLP I was eager to listen to new Alanis, and this was a big surprise. Nice to see Crazy rank it high, in my case it is lower but I have nothing but love for it!

47. So Unsexy (Under Rug Swept) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
I like this pop alanis. Like the lyrics too.

46. This Grudge (So Called Chaos) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
I like this lyrics, like an honest confession:
How this has entertained, validated And has served me greatly ever the victim

45. Big Sur (On The Road) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
Another non-similarity with Crazy :) I like the video, gave me "Ironic" vibes.

44. Flinch (Under Rug Swept) (CrazyCrazy: #7)
Another song I was happy to see high on Crazy's chart. Nice lyrics.

43. Wake Up (Jagged Little Pill) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)

42. Underneath (Flavors Of Entanglement) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
At the beginning, I was not crazy about this one, but in time I've learnt to like it.
Look at us micro kids with both our hearts blocked

41. Spiral (Havoc And Bright Lights) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)

Tomorrow I'll continue this journey.

Alanis Morissette's TOP 50: Part 2
Image

40. In Praise Of The Vulnerable Man (Flavors Of Entanglement) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)

39. Permission (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)

38. Lens (Havoc And Bright Lights) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
I like her voice here, more soothe.
we both think we're fair
we both live for truths
but then how are we to define something so subjective

37. Not The Doctor (Jagged Little Pill) (CrazyCrazy: #38)
Like the unplugged version she did here in Hard Rock Cafe Buenos Aires in 1996.
Simple but good lyrics:
And I don't wanna be your other half I believe that one and one make two

36. Versions Of Violence (Flavors Of Entanglement) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)

35. Empathy (Havoc And Bright Lights) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
There are so many colors that I still try to hide while I paint
And there are so many tunes that I secretly sing away

34. Edge Of Evolution (Havoc And Bright Lights ) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)

33. Madness (CrazyCrazy: #6)
She likes to make catharsis through her songs, which may help the listener. I like this.

32. The Couch (Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
I really like this song because she is telling me a story.

31. Utopia (Under Rug Swept) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
A very visual song, a different approach with her voice... lovely.
We would stay and respond and expand and include
And allow and forgive and enjoy and evolve and discern
And inquire and accept and admit
And divulge and open and reach out and speak up

Tomorrow I'll continue this journey.

Still not heard Big Sur.

It's the other way around!! my choices didn't chart in yours.

But there are many coincidences anyway!

Havoc has some nice songs imo, motherhood helped her leave behind some anger, but next album she can go back there :)

These are top 40 songs in your chart that didn't chart in mine:
#31 Incomplete
#36 Purgatorying
#37 Break
#39 Too Hot
#40 Feel Your Love

I'll share more songs taht didn't chart in mine in the upcoming posts

A big Alanis-fan! In these 10 there are already 2 of my favourites with "So unsexy" & "Flinch", very strong lyrics, both of them!

Alanis Morissette's TOP 50: Part 3
Image

30. No (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
A beautiful B-side from her last album. The chorus says it all.

29. I Was Hoping (Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
I prefer the MTV version. Another song that is kind of a story.
I too thought that when proved wrong I lost somehow

28. Receive (Havoc And Bright Lights) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
My wife & I just had our baby when this song was released, and I kind of understand the song by what my wife was going through. It is ok to demand a little attention in such a giving time.
It is a nice song.

27. Offer (Feast On Scraps) (CrazyCrazy: #38)
Very nice lyrics.

26. Crazy (The Collection) (CrazyCrazy: #20)
A risky cover imo but she delivered. Liked the video.

25. Not As We (Flavors Of Entanglement) (CrazyCrazy: #32)
A heartbreaking song about a split. Beautifully written.
From now I'm faking it 'til I'm pseudo making it
From scratch, begin again, but this time I as I and not as We

24. Guardian (Havoc And Bright Lights) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)

23. Forgiven (Jagged Little Pill) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
I would have thought Crazy liked this one! I love it, it was an instant favourite when I first listened to this album.

22. Havoc (Havoc And Bright Lights) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)

21. All I Really Want (Jagged Little Pill) (CrazyCrazy: #33)
Great introduction to Alanis! This was the first official song I listened from her, because I bought the album with only one previous listen of Uoy Oughta Know. I was blown away, the rest is history. GREAT song.

I still have to write "How I Met..." and then present Alanis' Top 7 Albums and the final two parts of this list! But i am enjoying it as I have the chance to go through her music again.

How I Met... Alanis Morissette?

It is funny how today you learn a lot about new music thanks to the web, but then it was all about MTV and MuchMusic. I watched them A LOT and many of my fav artirsts were discovered thanks to them. Especially MuchMusic.

I bought her album after watching the You Oughta Know in MuchMusic Argentina. It was just when the Alanis storm was starting so it is not that i discovered her or anything, but it was right at the begining. So I had the chance to really enjoy her overexposure :)

I have been a big fan since then. Went to see her threee times live, all of them in Buenos Aires: in the Jagged Little Pill tour, in the MTV Unplugged tour and in the Flavors tour. I think she is much more talkative now and she looks like she is enjoying more the stage.

Alanis Morissette's TOP 50: Part 4
Image

20. Out Is Through (So Called Chaos) (CrazyCrazy: #24)
Love the lyrics. Helped me in some difficult times.
The only way out is through
The faster we're in the better
The only way we'll feel better
The only way out is through ultimately

19. Tapes (Flavors Of Entanglement) (CrazyCrazy: #1)
Crazy's top Alanis song also makes my chart. Not so high, but it is indeed a GREAt song.

18. Limbo No More (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
My house, my role
My friends, my man
My devotion to God
All amorphous, indefinite

17. Unsent (Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
IMO one of her best videos.

16. Torch (Flavors Of Entanglement) (CrazyCrazy: #10)

15. So Pure (Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie) (CrazyCrazy: #8)
A short and effective song! A surprise in the SFIJ album. Another outstanding video.

14. Doth I Protest Too Much (So Called Chaos) (CrazyCrazy: #29)

13. Joining You (Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
Another unplugged version taht I find great.

12. That I Would Be Good (Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
Beautiful lyrics.

11. You Learn (Jagged Little Pill) (CrazyCrazy: #13)
I had forgotten this video!

Alanis Morissette's TOP 50: Part 5
Image

10. Hands Clean (Under Rug Swept) (CrazyCrazy: #23)
Another video I like.

9. Ironic (Jagged Little Pill) (CrazyCrazy: #19)
This video was EVERYWHERE. I loved it back then. She is very beautiful in it. This was the first song I learnt to play in the guitar. It was very easy and played it in front of 200 people during my graduation party. Of course I was just a guitar player, 3 girls sang it, I can't sing.

8. Uninvited (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
I thought Crazy would have liked this one. For me it was a fantastic song back then while I was waiting for her sophomore album.

7. Head Over Feet (Jagged Little Pill) (CrazyCrazy: #27)
Beautifl lyrics. Good video. Great song.

6. Thank You (Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie) (CrazyCrazy: #11)
I waited for this song for so long, that I was absorved by this. I really like the song, love the lyrics, I personally feel very identified with many parts:
How 'bout me not blaming you for everything
How 'bout me enjoying the moment for once

5. Perfect (Jagged Little Pill) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
While doing this chart, this song was going to be my #1. Eventually I chose other songs, but I find this song heartbreaking and I identify with it quite a lot.
Be a good boy push a little farther now
That wasn't fast enough to make us happy
We'll love you just the way you are if you're perfect

4. You Oughta Know (Jagged Little Pill) (CrazyCrazy: #3)
Fantastic song. Full of fury. It was alanis' introduction to the world. Great entrance.

3. Simple Together (Feast On Scraps) (CrazyCrazy: #34)
I discovered this song after a painful break-up. I had just ended a 4 year long relationship with a girl I was convinced was the one for me. I find the lyrics so real and representative of my feelings back then.

2. Hand In My Pocket (Jagged Little Pill) (CrazyCrazy: #9)
My favourite song from JLP. I close my eyes and I am 16 again.

1. Everything (So Called Chaos) (CrazyCrazy: #2)
Crazy's #2 is my #1, so it was close. I LOVE this song, love the lyrics, and it's my wife favourite too.

I can be the moodiest baby and you've never met anyone
Who is as negative as I am sometimes

I blame everyone else and not my own partaking
My passive aggressive-ness can be devastating

Tomorrow I'll wrap Alanis by presenting her TOP 7 albums.

Catch up!

30. No (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
Still not heard, mrlemonade loves this one though so will check it.

29. I Was Hoping (Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
Good, need to revisit.

28. Receive (Havoc And Bright Lights) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
Nice.

27. Offer (Feast On Scraps) (CrazyCrazy: #38)
Don't remember charting this at all. :-? Will need to re-check.

26. Crazy (The Collection) (CrazyCrazy: #20)
I really like her version, on reflection I may have placed it too high on my list.

25. Not As We (Flavors Of Entanglement) (CrazyCrazy: #32)
Lovely song.

24. Guardian (Havoc And Bright Lights) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
This is a catchy track, very paint by numbers for Alanis' standard though.

23. Forgiven (Jagged Little Pill) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
Hmmm, need to revisit.

22. Havoc (Havoc And Bright Lights) (CrazyCrazy: uncharted)
Same as above.

21. All I Really Want (Jagged Little Pill) (CrazyCrazy: #33)

I really like So-called chaos. It is a very different from the rest of the songs imo, and that's a good charasteristic. It was among the songs I ranked but it was outside of the top 50 and therefore didn't present it here.

Thanks for checking! I think you'll find some nice songs while revisitng the ones you mention.
