I was a BIG fan in the Good Will Hunting era, I got Either/Or back then and was hooked. Then, when i digitalized me I downloaded all his albums and found out many great songs!

Share with me later which songs are your favs!

Elliott Smith's TOP 40: Part 4
Image

10. Somebody That I Used To Know (Figure 8)
I had tender feelings that you made hard
But it's your heart, not mine, that's scarred
So when I go home, I'll be happy to go
You're just somebody that I used to know

9. Let's Get Lost (From A Basement On The Hill)
Well I don't know where I'll go now
And I don't really care who follows me there
But I'll burn every bridge that I cross
And find some beautiful place to get lost

8. Baby Britain (XO)
A really great sound here, something reminiscent of the 60s/70s for me.

7. Pretty (Ugly Before) (From A Basement On The Hill)
The piano + guitars in the chorus is something I really like here.

6. Angeles (Either/Or)
Another one from the Good Will Hunting soundtrack. This guitar sound makes me remember watching that movie for the first time and thinking what a lovely soundtrack it had. It is one of my favourites of all time.

5. All Cleaned Out (New Moon)
Another great unplugged song.

4. No Name #3 (Roman Candle)
Another one from GWH. The feeling is so beautifully sad.

3. Say Yes (Either/Or)
Fantastic song. Again, from the GWH film.

I'm in love with the world through the eyes of a girl
Who's still around the morning after
We broke up a month ago and I grew up, I didn't know
I'd be around the morning after

2. Between The Bars (Either/Or)
A very short but excellent song. Again, GWH soundtrack
The lyrics are like a beautiful poem

Drink up baby, stay up all night
With the things you could do, you won't but you might
The potential you'll be that you'll never see
The promises you'll only make

Drink up with me now, forget all about
The pressure of days, do what I say
And I'll make you okay, drive them away
The image is stuck in your head

People you've been before
That you don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still

Drink up baby, look at the stars
I'll kiss you again between the bars
Where I'm seeing you there with your hands in the air
Waiting to finally be caught

Drink up one more time and I'll make you mine
Keep you apart, deep in my heart
Separate from the rest but I like you the best
Keep the things you forgot

People you've been before
That you don't want around anymore
That push and shove and won't bend to your will
I'll keep them still

1. Miss Misery

This is one of my favourite movies of all time. I don't know if it is perfect or a classic, it is just perfect and a classic in my life. I just can watch it 100000 times.

I was not willing to see the movie because of Robin Williams. My borther was a BIG RW fan, just crazy aout him and all his movies, so I hated RW with all my heart.
But it was a summer night and my brother asked me to go to the cinema with him and I said yes.
I really LOVED the movie, and specially I loved Robin Williams in it! My brother, of course, hated everything lol. Bortherly love! I miss my brother a lot, all the crazy love/hate relationship that we had. So this song @ #1 is a tribute to my borther Nico.

The song is perfect by the way.

Tarot cards and the lines in my hand
Tell me I'm wrong but they're untrue

I'm not familiar with his music, but I'll definitely check him out some more. Sounds like something I could love.

BTW, re the earlier mentioned Natalie Merchant, I've just reviewed her latest album, it's on the home page, do check it out :D Gorgeous piece of work.

BONUS TRACK - ELLIOTT SMITH's TOP ALBUMS

7. New Moon (2007) - My rating: 71.3
Image
Second posthumous album that contains previously unreleased songs, mainly from the 94-97 period of time.
It was a good set of songs reminiscent of his initial times, raw music. But as many posthumous albums, it lacks some sort of cohesiveness imo.

6. Elliott Smith (1995) - My rating: 71.7
Image
His second album. Packed with minimalistic sounds, mainly acoustic songs. It is a good album although it lacks some textures sometimes.

5. Roman Candle (1994) - My rating: 72.2
Image
His first album. It was not intended to be released, but the record company asked for permission and, although he hesitated, finally accepted. One of its songs was later portrayed in the Good Wil Hunting soundtrack. Elliott gained exposure after performing a song in the Oscar ceremony, and it was only then that his previous albums got some minimal exposure.

4. From A Basement On The Hill (2004) - My rating: 74.3
Image
First posthomous album. He was almost finishing it when he passsed away. He intended it to be a double album but his ex-girlfiend worked on the recordings and finally managed to finish 15 songs.
I like the prodcution here, the songs sound really well.

3. Figure 8 (2000) - My rating: 74.8
Image
This album was a progression of his previous work. The first albums are mainly acoustic songs, but in his fourth album he started to produced the songs a little more, introducing other sounds and styles. This fifth album is a continuation of that journey.

2. XO (1998) - My rating: 75.5
Image
First solo album on a major record label. As I mentioned before, here is the first album in which he really tried to polished his sound and production. I think it was a good move. Although his first albums were good and his sound interesting, it was time to move on.

1. Either/Or (1997) - My rating: 77.9
Image
A fantastic set. Many of these songs appeared in the GWH soundtrack. His voice here hooked me.

How I Met... Elliott Smith
I have already told the story. Good Will Hunting, one of my all time fav movies, had many of his songs as part of the soundtrack. Seeing the movie in a local theater in Buenos Aires, hearing this voice while watching a captivating movie, was something that really got my attention. Bought the album as soon as i found it, first the soundtrack, then his Either/or album.
Only got the rest of his discography when I digitalized myself. A very good and strong catalogue.

Fiona Apple's TOP 30: Part 1
Image

30. Oh Well (Extraordinary Machine)
She has a very distinctive way of singing, her voice is very rare imo, very deep. And the way she played the piano is also special.

What wasted unconditional love
On somebody
Who doesn't believe in the stuff

29. Slow Like Honey (Tidal)
though dreams can be deceiving
like faces are to hearts
they serve for sweet relieving
when fantasy and reality lie too far apart

28. Get Him Back (Extraordinary Machine)
Love this song, the music fits the lyrics so well.

27. The Child Is Gone (Tidal)

26. Every Single Night (The Idler Wheel …)
I really like the lack of structure here.
When she sings the line "Every single night's a fight with my brain" she really sounds like Florence Welch.

25. I Know (When The Pawn...)
a very beautiful song.
And you can use my skin
To bury secrets in
And I will settle you down

24. Better Version Of Me (Rough Cut) (Extraordinary Machine)

23. Daredevil (The Idler Wheel …)
Her last album, alongside the previous one, are really experimental, I do like that although results are unstable. But then you run across with a song like this one and think it is worth the risk.

22. On The Bound (When The Pawn...)
I don't know what I'm doing, don't know should I
Change my mind, I can't decide, there's too many
Variations to consider
No thing I do don't do no thing but bring me
More to do,

21. Not About Love (Extraordinary Machine)
Great song to close today's update.

I think Oh Well and Daredevil are my faves from their respective albums. Love the sound of gravel in Daredevil! And I agree about the Florence voice in ESN's chorus.

Second post updated with all the info from the 16 artists portrayed here so far.

Bon Jovi still leads the Artist rank, with Alanis and Beyoncé in the #2 & #3 positions respectively.

Alanis' Jagged Little Pill is still the #1 album followed by Dido's Life For Rent and Diana Krall's When I look In Your Eyes.

Will update that again after Fiona Apple and Garbage are finished.

Fiona Apple's TOP 30: Part 2
Image

20. Dull Tool
A very interesting song, found it not so long ago and loved it.

You don't kiss when you kiss
You don't f*** when you f***
You don't say what you mean
You don't talk loud enough

No pulse in your impulse

19. Hot Knife (The Idler Wheel …)
In more time this song can become a top 10. So far I am still digesting this album, but this song is addictive and I am playing it more and more.

If I'm butter, then he's a hot knife
He makes my heart a cinema scope screen
Showing the dancing bird of paradise
He excites me
Must be like the genesis of rhythm

18. To Your Love (When The Pawn...)
Here's another speech you wish I'd swallow
Another cue for you to fold your ears
Another train of thought too hard to follow

17. Please Please Please (Extraordinary Machine)
For me this is the state of mainstream music today...

Give us something familiar
Something similar
To what we know already
That will keep us steady
Steady,
Steady going nowhere

16. A Mistake (When The Pawn...)

I'm gonna f*** it up again
I'm gonna do another detour
Unpave my path

And if you wanna make sense
Whatcha looking at me for
I'm no good at math

[...]

I've acquired quite a taste
For a well-made mistake
I wanna make mistake, why can't I make a mistake?

I'm always doing what I think I should
Almost always doing everybody good
Why-

Do I wanna do right, of course but
Do I really wanna feel I'm forced to answer you, hell no

15. Extraordinary Machine (Extraordinary Machine)
Not only good lyrics but also a very interesting sound.
I still only travel by foot and by foot it's a slow climb
But I'm good at being uncomfortable so I can't stop changing all the time

14. The First Taste (Tidal)
Another fantastic song, makes me dance.

i'm building memories on things we have not said
full is not heavy as empty,
not nearly my love,
not nearly my love

13. Oh Sailor (Extraordinary Machine)

12. The Way Things Are (When The Pawn...)
I really like the chorus here.

11. Love Ridden (When The Pawn...)
I find this lyrics heartbreaking.

No, not baby anymore - if I need you
I'll just use your simple name
Only kisses on the cheek from now on
And in a little while, we'll only have to wave

Hot Knife, Extraordinary Machine and Oh Sailor are my faves from this batch.

Have to admit I haven't gotten into When the Pawn... much for some reason. I prefer the 3rd and 4th albums over the first two in general (even though Tidal also has some of my favourite songs).

Fiona Apple's TOP 30: Part 3
Image

10. Fast As You Can (When The Pawn...)
A brave first single for her sophomore effort.

Cause I'm tired of whys, choking on whys,
Just need a little because,

9. Sullen Girl (Tidal)

8. Get Gone (When The Pawn...)
A very good song with changes in the speed that I do like a lot.

7. Across The Universe
A very good cover and video.

6. Limp (When The Pawn...)
I just love this angry Fiona.

You feed the beast I have within me
You wave the red flag, baby you make it run run run
Standing on the sidelines, waving and grinning
You fondle my trigger, then you blame my gun
And when I think of it, my fingers turn to fists
I never did anything to you, man
But no matter what I try
You'll beat me with your bitter lies
So call me crazy, hold me down
Make me cry; get off now, baby-
It won't be long till you'll be
Lying limp in your own hand

5. Never Is A Promise (Tidal)
An instant favo from the Tidal album, loved it since the first second I heard it. she can be so fragile & strong.

You'll say you understand, but You don't understand
You'll say you'd never give up seeing eye to eye
But never is a promise, and you can't afford to lie

4. Sleep To Dream (Tidal)
I tell you how I feel, but you don't care
I say "tell me the truth," but you don't dare
You say love is a hell you cannot bear
And I say gimme mine back and then go there, for all I care

3. Criminal (Tidal)
Many things were said about this song, the truth imo is taht it is just a fantastic song.

Heaven help me for the way I am
Save me from these evil deeds
Before I get them done
I know tomorrow brings
The consequence at hand
But I keep livin' this day
Like the next will never come

2. Paper Bag (When The Pawn...)
A very refreshing sound in her second album. My fav video from her.

I was staring at the sky, just looking for a star
To pray on, or wish on, or something like that
I was having a sweet fix of a daydream of a boy
Whose reality I knew, was too hopeless to be had

But then the dove of hope began its downward slope
And I believed for a moment that my chances
Were approaching to be grand
But as it came down near, so did a weary tear

I thought it was a bird, but it was just a paper bag

1. Shadowboxer (Tidal)
So I'll be sure to stay weary of you, love
To save the pain of once my flame and twice my burn

How I Met... Fiona Apple
1996, a fantastic year in music, and Fiona was part of it. That decade remains as my fav decade of all time regarding music.

MuchMusic and MTV were all about music videos back then, and it was the best way to learn new artists. Fiona was there one day and she captivated me. Been a fan since first moment.

Haha, my album ranking would be exactly the opposite  But all her albums are good!

Shadowboxer, Criminal, Never Is a Promise, Sullen Girl, Fast as You Can are all amazing! Shadowboxer is in my Tidal top 3 I think.

(p.s. new batch of Tori songs in my countdown!)

Yes, when you told me the previous post that your favs were her last two albums I realized we were not going to have a match

Sometimes it is difficult to analyze some albums independently of what they mean to me. Tidal & When the Pawn were released during my teenage years, when I was a lot into music and specifically into singer-songrwriters. So I must have heard those 2 albums around 12351325132 times each.

Her last two albums were released many years later, when I already had like 18000 songs in my library and so I am much more diversified. Thay are more complex also, the structure of the songs and the lyrics. But I can say that some time ago The Idler was very low in my preferences, but then I decided to give it another try and things changed a lot! It is very good. So maybe in a future it can be higher.

I am following your Tori thread! It is one of the first things I check here when I get back from work.

Yeah you've got a point there. it's similar with me and Ingrid Michaelson, I was in my mid-teens, still discovering my music taste, when I heard her first two albums and I hold them very dear, but the rest... but I'll have the "my relationship with Ingrid's music" essay when she gets her turn here :D

As for Fiona, I actually heard Tidal much earlier but didn't really like it. Found it very bland and samey  then I kinda ignored her for a while, and when The Idler Wheel came out and got unanimously excellent reviews, I decided to give Fiona another shot and I'm glad that I did because I loved the album instantly, and that enabled me to give her other albums a shot, and to listen to Tidal with a fresh set of views, and then I liked that one too. So basically that's why TIW is my favourite!

My latest batch of Tori songs got ignored so that's why I had to remind because it often gets shoved down under other topics and maybe people don't see  *desperate*

Garbage's TOP 40: Part 1
Image

40. Thirteen
A cool song to start this countdown.

39. Parade (Beautiful Garbage)
A classic Garbage sound.

Oh let's bomb that factory
That makes all the wannabes
Let's burst all the bubbles
That brainwash the masses

38. Bright Tonight
From the beginning we were always going to fail
We were the next thing that the world could not wait to tear down

37. Nobody Can Win
Until you figure out
A way that you can live without
Stories with happy ends

36. Boys Wanna Fight (Bleed Like Me)
I've never seen them alive, I think this kind of songs might sound great in a stadium.

35. Sugar (Not Your Kind Of People)

34. Control (Not Your Kind Of People)

33. Run Baby Run (Bleed Like Me)
Another good tune to listen in a stadium, or loud on your computer.

32. Because the Night (with Screaming Females)
I found out about this song preparing this countdown... so the fact that it is already in my top 40 speaks a lot about this song. I really like it!

31. Kick My Ass
Fantastic song to close today's update! Looove this one!

Garbage's TOP 40: Part 2
Image

30. Tell Me Where It Hurts (Absolute Garbage)
I've been loved but I didn't know how to feel it
And I've been adored but I don't know if I ever believed it
I've been loved my whole life but I didn't know how to take it until you

29. Beloved Freak (Not Your Kind Of People)

28. Drive You Home (Beautiful Garbage)
They have some really nice slow songs like this one.

It's funny how, even now you still support me
After all of the things that I've done
You're so good to me, waiting patiently
And isn't it sad that you still have to ask if I care?

27. A Stroke Of Luck (Garbage)
I feel like 16 again listening to this song! What a time!

26. Wicked Ways (Version 2.0)

25. Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!) (Beautiful Garbage)
Garbage going Pop... The video is cool. I hated this back then, but eventually liked it.

24. Blood For Poppies (Not Your Kind Of People)
The last two Garbage albums are kind of underrated. This song is great.

23. Not My Idea (Garbage)
I love the dududuuduudududuudup

22. I Think I'm Paranoid (Version 2.0)
I didn't like this as a single, with so many gems in this album, but eventually I came to terms with this one.

21. Cup Of Coffee (Beautiful Garbage)
I loved this song, now I like it a lot.

So no of course we can't be friends
Not while I'm still this obsessed
I guess, I always knew the score
This is how our story ends

Garbage's TOP 40: Part 3
Image

20. As Heaven Is Wide (Garbage)
A great track from theur first album to start today's update.

19. Androgyny (Beautiful Garbage)
This was part of their popper era.

18. When I Grow Up (Version 2.0)
A Beyoncésque choreography by Shirley !

17. Medication (Version 2.0)
I love this album's cover. An instant fav when I heard the album for the first time.

16. Vow (Garbage)
I can't use what I can't abuse

15. Temptation Waits (Version 2.0)
A perfect album opener.

I'll tell you somethin', I am a wolf
But I like to wear sheep's clothin'

14. Supervixen (Garbage)

13. Bleed Like Me (Bleed Like Me)
Beautiful song.

Try to comprehend that which you'll never comprehend

12. It's All Over But The Crying (Bleed Like Me)
I was obsessed by this one when the album was out.

Certain things turn ugly
When you think too hard
And nagging little thoughts
Change into things you can't turn off

11. Girls Talk (with Brody Dalle)
Another song I've discovered making this list. So happy! I find this excellent!

Garbage's TOP 40: Part 4
Image

10. Queer (Garbage)
At the begining I didn't like this song. today I really enjoy it's style.

9. Push It (Version 2.0)
I remember watching this video for the first time, anticipating the second album. Waiting for MTV or MuchMusic to play it as there was no youtube around to see the cvideo whenever I wanted to.

8. Special (Version 2.0)

7. Why Do You Love Me (Bleed Like Me)
A perfect return to a more rock sound. I was very happy when this was released after Beautiful Garbage.

Nothing ever smells of roses that rises out of mud

6. The Trick Is To Keep Breathing (Version 2.0)
I loved this song, was probably my #1 Garbage song for some time. Maybe it should be a little more subtle in the production, a little more raw and acoustic.

5. Stupid Girl (Garbage)
Overplayed a little bit, but great.

What drives you on
Can drive you mad
A million lies to sell yourself
Is all you ever had

4. Only Happy When It Rains (Garbage)
a great 90's type of video.

3. #1 Crush
Great song!
I like Baz Luhrman's movies, and Romeo & Juliet is no exception. I was 15 when I saw it and really liked it. Claire Danes was very intense in that movie, I had a crush on her.

2. You Look So Fine (Version 2.0)
I find this song captivating everytime I listen to it. Intense love, passionate, obsessive. Lovely.

You look so fine, I want to break your heart
And give you mine, you're taking me over

1. Milk (Garbage)
I am obsessed with this song.

BONUS TRACK - GARBAGE's TOP ALBUMS

5. Not Your Kind Of People (2012) - My rating: 73.4

After 7 years of waiting, they returned with this album, which is good and solid but I haven't really dived into it. Maybe in a future I get back to it and it will impress me more.
It's their first album that they recorded outside of Winsconsin. This time it was done in LA.

4. Beautiful Garbage (2001) - My rating: 75.6

Garbage goes Pop. Shirley Manson had a blog then, everything was so mainstream about them that I think they got kind of confused. As this is just a one-album experiment imo, I can forget about it and enjoy this pop sound from them. Some songs are fun and good, and Cup Of Coffee is very beautiful.

3. Bleed Like Me (2005) - My rating: 78.2

A welcomed sound here. But... I agree with what I've read in Wikipedia "...critics complimented the new sound but found the album inconsistent and at times outdated". If I can complain about one thing about Garbage is that they didn't evolve completely, they are kind of stucked in the middle. No surprise my favs albums are the first two.

2. Garbage (1995) - My rating: 84.1

an album so packed with fantastic songs. It was a perfect first album, sounding both polished but at the same time experimental and raw. Love it.

1. Version 2.0 (1998) - My rating: 85.2

IMO, a standing ovation here. I love when the second album is better than the first one (and the first one was already an almost masterpiece!). 97-98 were my fav years in music, and this one is a big part of that.

How I Met... Garbage
I was a teenager. Back then I was just begining to get into music. Again, MTV/MuchMusic were the vehicle by which I learnt about new artists. I bought Garbage around the time Only Happy When It Rains was released. I was obsessed by the album and confirmed my obsession when Version 2.0 was out. They haven't matched thos album yet, but I love this group.

they are great songs and their signature songs for sure. My top 3 are less known songs, although all singles, and I like them a little more just because they are more intimate and subtle.

I just updated the second post.

Fiona nor Garbage managed to make a big impact in the Top Artists rank, where Bon Jovi still leads the pack. Both of them have "short" discographies although being around for almost 20 years.

In the Albums rank, Fiona enters in the Top 3. Alanis still has the best album of this 18 artists.

Next two artists: Gloria Estefan ( :o never mentioned around here, but as a latin myself I grew up to her songs on the radio - expect many songs in spanish around here) and then Gwen Stefani/No Doubt.
