Gloria Estefan's TOP 30: Part 1
Image
I am from Argentina, but lived many years in Uruguay. Back in my childhood years, Gloria was very important, specially in Uruguay. I have SO many memories listening to her songs that I just cannot separate her music from my memories. So I am not going to be completely objective here. If I check my music taste and then see her name in the list, I instantly think "mmmm something is wrong here", but no, I do like her a lot, think she is a great person & artist and want her to success.

30. Cuts Both Ways (Cuts Both Ways)
A great album with mani 80s classics. This is one of them.

29. Oye (Gloria!)
I remember this song from the clubs when I was 18. I didn`t like to dance, but this song was good to catch a girl and dance a little bit.

28. Bad Boy (Primitive Love)

27. Dr. Beat (Eyes Of Innocence)
These last two videos are sooooo bad lol. But so 80s!

26. Wepa (Miss Little Havana)
I find this catchy.

25. Show Me To The Way Back To Your Heart (Destiny)
I like the altin flavor of this song. A guilty pleasure.

24. No Llores (feat. Carlos Santana, José Feliciano & Sheila E.) (90 Millas)
Great cuban flavor here.

23. Tus Ojos (Mi Tierra)
This album was EVERYWHERE.

22. No Hay Mal Que Por Bien No Venga (Mi Tierra)

21. Everlasting Love (Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me)
There are better versions of this song, but this one is fine.

Milk (Garbage) - That's an interesting song, although they're not really my thing I can see why someone else would love this. Blood For Poppies is great! :)

Shadowboxer (Fiona Apple) - Her style and voice are very nice. She needs to enter the Album Cup!

Miss Misery (Elliott Smith) - Good, but I guess I'll need a few more listens to warm up to his music.

Everlasting Love (Gloria Estefan) - Hmmm no. So messy!

I had so many albums I want to enter the Album Cup that you'll need to create something like 45 editions LOL
I think we need one edition before the year's end! But I don't want to play with your time :)

Elliott Smith do need MANY listens, but once you click with him, it is really good. But in big dosis he can be depressing.

Everlasting Lve is not Gloria's #1! It is 21... but I know, Gloria is a guilty pleasure of mine...

I'd love to do one more this year, but I would need commitment from the players, because after a few rounds the votes plummet so hard it's not even funny.

I'll PM you ideas to keep interest throughout the game. But it is a tendency in all games around here that people stop participating.

LOL at you commenting on Gloria's songs just because! Neither Gloria nor me will feel bad if you don't! I know you will eventually share your views on the artists that you like! Thanks anyway!!!! I like to read others opinions, which is not happening :(

But I don't like leaving things undone so I'll finish this decontruction of myself even if I am the only one posting!

Gloria Estefan's TOP 30: Part 2
Image

20. Cuba Libre (Gloria!)
The song is so sad, contrasting the rhythm of the song.

19. Rhythm Is Gonna Get You (Let It Loose)
From her times with Miami Sound Machine. Great song!

18. Tres Deseos (Abriendo Puertas)
This song is on the radio every single new years eve! it's like her latin All I Want For Christmas Is You. The video is terribly bad...

17. Montuno (Mi Tierra)
Many memories from my years in Uruguay. She did an outstanding job making this cuban falvor album.

16. Conga (Primitive Love)
Another one from her Miami Sound Machine years. Fantastic song.

15. Turn The Beat Around (Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me)
I know this album was kinda unnecesary, but I remember watching the Sly Stallone / Sharon Stone movie (and loving it) and this song was great back then!

14. Mi Buen Amor (Mi Tierra)
A beautiful love song.

13. Steal Your Heart (Destiny)
Great song from her Destiny album. The video with Lost footage is just weird! The song doesn't fit!!! But I remembered watching that show so I share it (up to season 4, then I got lost...)

12. Si Senor!... (Mi Tierra)
Another great salsa song.

11. Heaven's What I Feel (Gloria!)
How come this didn't get VMA's Video of the year award????

I really love 'Everlasting Love' in its three edits: video, radio and single.
I Also love:

Hold me thrill me
Get on your feet
Oye mi canto

Gloria Estefan's TOP 30: Part 3
Image

10. Oye Mi Canto (Cuts Both Ways)
The piano at 2:30 is so good.

9. Abriendo Puertas (Abriendo Puertas)
Another New Yer's Eve song.

8. Con Los Años Que Me Quedan (Mi Tierra)
I have very fond memories of this one.

7. Como Me Duele Perderte (Alma Caribeña)
Third latin album from her. IDeas started to lack, but the song is beautiful.

6. Here We Are (Cuts Both Ways)
A classic.

5. Mi Tierra (Mi Tierra)
Beautiful lyrics.

La tierra te duele, la tierra te da
En medio del alma, cuando tu no estas
La tierra te empuja de raíz y cal
La tierra suspira si no te ve mas
...
Y cada calle que va a mi pueblo
Tiene un quejido, tiene un lamento
Tiene nostalgia como su voz
Y esa canción que sigue entonando
Corre en la sangre y sigue llegando
Con mas fuerza al corazón

4. Hoy (Unwrapped)
Another beautiful lyric

Tengo marcado en el pecho todos los días que el tiempo no me dejo estar aquí

3. Reach (Destiny)
From Atlanta 96, I loved that song, I love some inspirational songs once in a while.

2. Don't Wanna Loose You (Cuts Both Ways)
Another classic! She has many great songs.

1. Ayer (Mi Tierra)
a beautiful and melancholic song to finish Gloria's journey.

Muy bien dice el cantor, lo pasado no importa
De todo nuestro orgullo es lo peor

BONUS TRACK - GLORIA ESTEFAN's TOP ALBUMS

15. The Standards (2013) - My rating: 65.0
Image
I found all this songs underperforming. I always think that at one point of an artist's career it is fine to do this type of album. But her rendition of the songs are just plain. No texture in her voice. Even when The Day That You Loved Me is a song I love in spanish (El Día Que Me Quieras, a song original recorded by argentinian Carlos Gardel).

14. Into The Light (1991) - My rating: 66.2
Image
The comeback ablum fter the nearly fatal bus accident she was involved in. I think she lacked depth in such an inspirational album.

13. Eyes Of Innocence (1984) - My rating: 66.3
Image
First english album by Gloria & Miami Sound Machine. Dr Beat is a highlight on this bland album.

12. 90 Millas (2007) - My rating: 66.8
Image
Fourth spanish album since Mi Tierra, it lacks the strength of previous efforts.

11. Let It Loose (1987) - My rating: 68.3
Image
Last album in which she shares credits with Miami Sound Machine.

10. Alma Caribeña (2000) - My rating: 68.3
Image
Third spanish album, she has some high points here but also she repeats herself with a formula that cannot survive 3 albums.

9. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me (1994) - My rating: 68.5
Image
I think it was too early in her career to release this type of album, but she has two big hits in here. Anyway, tha versions lack originality in general.

8. Unwrapped (2003) - My rating: 68.8
Image
English language album in which the best songs are the ones in spanish ;)

7. Primitive Love (1985) - My rating: 69.0
Image
Conga and Bad Boy rescues this album from oblivion.

6. Gloria! (1998) - My rating: 70.0
Image
Disco album that surprised me with some good and consistent tunes.

5. Abriendo Puertas (1995) - My rating: 71.8
Image
Second album in spanish, it is a New Year's Eve conceptual album. Has some very beautiful songs.

4. Miss Little Havana (2011) - My rating: 72.9
Image
I was surprised when I saw this album so high. But the truth is that she shared the studio with great producers (Pharrell Williams for example) and many songs are really interesting choices.

3. Destiny (1996) - My rating: 73.0
Image
Another album that surprisingly ranked very high. Reach was a great olympic tune, one of the best.

2. Cuts Both Ways (1989) - My rating: 75.3
Image
This album is great, with MANY classics in it.

1. Mi Tierra (1993) - My rating: 78.1
Image
Seeing my top 30 it was kind of obvious that this album would rank #1. I think it is great with many songs trascending the barriers of time.

How I Met... Gloria Estefan
Impossible not to know her. I think the first memory is in a new Year's Eve in Montenvideo. I was 7 or 8 years old, and everybody was nuts about her Mi Tierra album.
Years later, that was the first album I bought from her and I think it is a great one.

Glad Jose that there is one more user that enjoys Gloria's music! She has a pretty strong catalogue! Of course she is around for 30+ years but it is remarkable the amount of classics/hits she has. I believe she is the true latin icon in the states thanks to her determination and hard work.

Thanks for posting and sharing your favs!

Gwen Stefani/No Doubt's TOP 40: Part 1
Image

40. Doghouse (The Beacon Street Collection)
A song from their second album. For those that consider Tragic Kingdom as their first album, then this is album number -1.
Not many interesting things from that era imo.

39. End It on This (Tragic Kingdom)
You see, it's hard to face
The addict that's inside of me
I want to fill my glass up
With you constantly

38. The Sweet Escape (feat. Akon) (The Sweet Escape)
I do like this song, but hated it sooo much back then that today I just can't place it higher.

37. One More Summer (Push and Shove)
Very good song that fits a big stadium kind of show.

36. Waiting Room (Rock Steady)
An experimental and interesting song. Some background vocals seems to be from Prince...checked and he is in fact Prince!

35. Leftovers (Everything in Time)
A very cool reggae song.

34. Undercover (Push and Shove)

33. You Can Do It (Tragic Kingdom)
Very 70s TV show kind of song imo!

32. World Go 'Round (Tragic Kingdom)

31. I Throw My Toys Around (feat. Elvis Costello) (Everything in Time)
Cool song to end today's update.

- "Falling in love" reached number 7 in 1986
- "Anything for you" reached number 2 in 1989
- "Can't stay away from you" entered in december 1988 and was number 1 for the first 5 weeks of 1989.

About Gwen Stefani, not a big fan of her solo-work, but No Doubt I like a lot.

86-89 were her biggest years internationally. Then she continued being popular in the first half of the 90s.

I can see people liking the songs you mention as they were big. But personally, by seeing my list, I prefer many of her solo work as I think she was more latin oriented then. And I like her for pushing with that sound.

About ND/Gwen, it was hard to make a melted list as the work is VERY different imo! Gwen is very POP while ND I think has a more undefined style. You'll see many No Doubt songs here

Gwen Stefani/No Doubt's TOP 40: Part 2
Image

30. Everything in Time (London) (Everything in Time)
A rare song from their B-sides album.

29. Heaven (Push and Shove)
A very pop sound for them as a group, probably influenced by Gwen's previous solo efforts.

28. Luxurious (feat. Slim Thug) (Love Angel Music Baby)
A cool song from her debut solo album. This one was not an instant favourite, but has been growing on me.

27. Hollaback Girl (Love Angel Music Baby)
When the album was out I really liked this one. When this became such a massive hit I started to dislike it. It is good but overrated.

26. Spiderwebs (Tragic Kingdom)
I think this was the first No Doubt song I heard. Was not hooked but they caught my attention.

25. Running (Rock Steady)
I think the video is very nice, to witness their journey.

24. Push and Shove (feat. Busy Signal & Major Lazer) (Push and Shove)
Mixed feelings about this, but I find it a good song. Like the changes and the features, but somehow the video turn me off. The band is trying too hard imo.

23. Orange County Girl (The Sweet Escape)
Interesting sound, I was sure back then this was going to be a single.

22. Wind It Up (The Sweet Escape)
This was very hard to rate. The first time I listened to it I didn't know if I should scream, cry, love, hate, think it was genious, think it was blasphemy. Something similar to what i still feel today.

21. The Real Thing (Love Angel Music Baby)
Lovely song, but it has aged a little bit.

Gwen Stefani/No Doubt's TOP 40: Part 3
Image

20. Serious (Love Angel Music Baby)
I find this one a very 90's style of pop song, which is a good thing.

19. Ex-Girlfriend (Return of Saturn)
A good song, somehow underwhelming as I had big expectations after Tragic Kingdom.

18. New & Approved (Everything in Time)
I don't like the original New, but this remix gives it life.

17. Rock Steady (Rock Steady)
A very surprising and refreshing song, from a quite surprising and refreshing album.

16. Undone (Push and Shove)
A beautiful song. I like the guitar-type of song for them.

15. Simple Kind of Life (Return of Saturn)
Great song! Maybe it should have been higher.

14. Settle Down (Push and Shove)
Their comeback single after Gwen's solo journey. Many don't like this, but I think this album, although much more pop, was a solid effort.

13. Gravity (Push and Shove)
Although sometimes I think this is a desperate attempt to sound current, something like Coldplay's A Sky Full Of Stars, I like this song.

12. Easy (Push and Shove)

11. What You Waiting For? (Love Angel Music Baby)
I was very surprised about this one. I wasn't expecting such a pop song from her. And it was a good thing, to differentiate herself from No Doubt. The song is good, catchy, funny and pop but personal at the same time.

Thanks jose! Later at home I will reveal if Looking Hot is amongst my favs.

I think Push and Shove suffers from the "big expectations" syndrom. I found it pretty solid, but considering it was their first album in such a long time I was expecting something more. Nevertheless, many songs were presented in this top 40.

Gwen Stefani/No Doubt's TOP 40: Part 4
Image

10. Cool (Love Angel Music Baby)
Very nice song and video. She looks fantastic here, and the song is really "cool".

9. Magic's in the Makeup (Return of Saturn)
I find this song pretty nice, just couldn't find an album version so I am sharing the acoustic one.

8. Just a Girl (Tragic Kingdom)
I am glad she stopped playing like this with her voice. The song is really catchy.

7. 4 In The Morning (The Sweet Escape)
A very catchy song, It was an instant fav when I heard TSE for the first time.

6. Underneath It All (feat. Lady Saw) ()
This was once my fav song from them. It is a "crazy song" around here in Argentina as at one point of the song you think she is speaking in spanish (0:30) saying "he sido Carlos en Milan" which would be "I once was Charles in Milan"... no sense but spanish lol

5. Early Winter (The Sweet Escape)
