Janet Jackson's TOP 60: Part 2
Image

50. Feedback (Discipline)
Good song to start today's update. Maybe it was not the comeback hit/album some people was expecting, but I think the song was catchy and cool.

49. The Body That Loves You (janet.)
I like the type of latin rhythm here. I don't think Janet is big here in Argentina, she is only Michael's sister. A pity her music and albums don't get much promo.

48. One More Chance (Design Of A Decade: 1986-1996)
It is such a beautiful song. Love this slow R&B songs from her.

47. Slolove (Damita Jo)
More upbeat but still soothing.

46. Living In A World (They Didn't Make) (Rhythm Nation 1814)
A song that instantly catched my attention.

45. That's The Way Love Goes (janet.)
Having this great song at this stage speaks more of Janet's body of work rather than of me liking the song less. Love the rhythm of this one. She looks beautiful in the video.

44. Black Cat (Rhythm Nation 1814)
A very different sound from her, something refreshing and good. I've been listening to this more and more lately. Maybe in a future this will rank higher.

43. Funny How Time Flies (When You're Having Fun) (Control)
This beautiful R&B songs are perfect to listen drinking some good red wine. They are relaxing!

42. Come On Get Up (All For You)
I find this song really amusing.

41. Because Of Love (janet.)
I love the shoop shoop, silly but effective.

Janet Jackson's TOP 60: Part 3
Image

40. Can't B Good (Discipline)
Almost entering this saturday night here in Argentina, this great song to set the mood.

39. When We Oooo (All For You)
Very sensual song. This won Janet's Race, which was surprising and refreshing.

38. Just A Little While (Damita Jo)
I think this was a great single, very uplifting and fun.

37. My Need (Velvet Rope)

36. Nothing
Lovely ballad, I found this out thanks to biscuit's games (check it, you'll find links to ALL of her songs and it was really helpful for me to discover many new favs), and in such a short time it is already amongst my favs.

35. I Want You (Damita Jo)
Another great song from Damita Jo, a hit&miss album, but with outstanding tracks just like this.

34. Enjoy (20 Y.O.)
She really knows how to make some fun and easylistening R&B songs.

33. Luv (Discipline)

32. Lonely (Rhythm Nation 1814)
I am still diving into her pre-Velvet eras. I know she was BIG before Velvet, but not here in Argentina. Love this one.

31. Never Letchu Go (Discipline)

BONUS TRACK - JAMIE CULLUM's TOP ALBUMS

10. Dream Street (1984) - My rating: 69.7
Image
First of all, the hand in her head looks like it is her foot, and that is horrible.
The album is nice, there are no standout points and you can sense the inexpereince in her, but the whole thing is fine. There are small sparks of what the future would bring.
Some good songs such as Hold Back The Tears and If It Takes All Night, alongside other nice tracks such as Communication and Two To The Power Of Love (feat. Cliff Richard).

9. Janet Jackson (1982) - My rating: 70.0
Image
I read in wikipedia that this album was "bubblegum soul"... don't get the point. For me it is a young girl with some nice songs.
Maybe I am influencd by the fact she is Janet, and of course it is nothing like her future albums, but this was a sweet start.
You'll Never Find (A Love Like Mine) almost made my list. Say You Do is another nice song from here.

8. Damita Jo (2004) - My rating: 74.5
Image
I like this, but it was a step backwards from her previous efforts imo. Few great songs, many good songs and some fillers for me which bring down the average. Anyway, it is a high average! The album is better tahn what I've read, I think people downplayed this album because of her "event" in the superbowl, not giving it a proper chance.

7. Discipline (2008) - My rating: 74.8
Image
I find much more great songs in here, but it is another album with many filler tracks. Anyway, it wa another album that didn't get the praise it deserved. It is sad that it is her last album so far, so after 6 years we are all still waiting.

6. Control (1986) - My rating: 75.0
Image
I know it was her breakthrough and probably one of the fan favorites. For me it is a good album but I don't really enjoy this sound that much. But it was the beggining of her legacy.

Janet Jackson's TOP 60: Part 4
Image

30. Show Me (20 Y.O.)
A sensual and cool R&B jam to start this night update.

29. Tonight's The Night (Velvet Rope)
I love this version. Fits her perfectly.

28. Better Days (All For You)
I love how the songs lifts after such a sad intro.

27. Again (janet.)
She looks beautiful in this video.

26. Come Back To Me (Rhythm Nation 1814)
Another relaxing tune.

25. Whoops Now (janet.)
This is very alike "Cherish" from Madonna. I Like this style for her, cheer up and have fun.

24. Go Deep (Velvet Rope)
I would have loved to see this show live!

23. Get It Out Me (20 Y.O.)

22. Greatest X (Discipline)
Ok, this can be a very simple tune, very much alike many other R&B songs from the 2000s but I am just addicted to it.

21. Any Time, Any Place (janet.)
A sensual and cool R&B jam to end this night update.

Janet Jackson's TOP 60: Part 5
Image

20. Trust A Try (All For You)
A great rock sound. It was a re-discovery this year. I like Janet's versatility.

19. Rock With U (Discipline)
I like the video, the only bad thing is that is very dark, no lights, like Feedback.

18. Days Go By
Another beautiful realxing song.

17. Call On Me (feat. Nelly) (20 Y.O.)
I don't understand why this song is so hated by many.

16. You (Velvet Rope)
I love the change in her tone here. The chorus is Michael Jackson.

15. All Nite (Don't Stop) (Damita Jo)
My fav Damita Jo song. I find this song addictive.

14. Son Of A Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You) (All For You)
Great sample of a wonderful song.

13. This Time (janet.)
This is perfection. From now on all songs are just perfection. This one is very catchy, I keep on singing the chorus.

12. Someone To Call My Lover (All For You)
Back then this song was everything to me. Now I have grown a little tired of it, but I just can't place it lower. It is very catchy.

11. Special (Velvet Rope)
It may be a little cheesy, but I LOVE it.

How I Met... Janet Jackson?

Mid 90s I was very into Mariah Carey. I really lked her R&B style, and was eager for more.

I have to admit that I've never paid attention to Janet before. In fact, I remember being confused between Janet and Latoya Jackson. And as what I heard from Latoya and watch on TV was BAD I never took Janet into consideration. But, when the Velvet Rope was out, I do rememebr watching news in MTV, and she gathered my attention.

When I bought the Velvet Rope, I have to say that just from the second I saw the cover and artwork, I knew it was going to be perfect. The colors, her pose, everything there sets the mood of what is to come. Then the sequencing of songs is great.

I was a big fan of this album and eventually, when the following albums wre out, got them, and liked them. But her pre-Velvet albums were not catching my attention. I listened to a few songs, and I just thought it was too 80s, too dance. It was when biscuits held the Janet Jackson survivor that I took the time to listen to each and every one of the links he shared, and relaized there were sooooo many great songs.

I consider myself a new fan anyway, as before it was mainly about Velvet but today I am discovering a lot of new things from her.

Janet Jackson's TOP 60: Part 6
Image

10. Runaway (Design Of A Decade: 1986-1996)
This song is kind of naive but that's part of its charm.

9. Doesn't Really Matter (All For You)
Similar to runaway.

8. Velvet Rope (feat. Vanessa Mae) (Velvet Rope)
Fantastic song. Again, all these songs are outstanding, the placing is just an anecdote.

7. What About (Velvet Rope)
I love this song, it is so raw and intimate.

6. Let's Wait Awhile (Control)

5. All For You (All For You)
The video is SO BAD that I feel sad that such a fun and uplifting song was linked to this. The dancing is fine anyway. the song is addictive.

4. Every Time (Velvet Rope)
A personal fave, a "flop" as a siognle but for me it was beautiful. A song that is simple but effective.

3. Together Again (Velvet Rope)
I've been quite harsh to this song in many survivors only because it is loved by many and overshadows other gems. Objectively, this song deserves to be in the top 3.

2. Got 'Til It's Gone (feat. Q-Tip & Joni Mitchell) (Velvet Rope)
I really was doubting if this should be #1 or #2... The video is by far her best. The rhythm is overwhelmingly beautiful, the sample is just perfection...

1. I Get Lonely (Velvet Rope)
My fav since the first second I listened to it. Love this type of R&B. A great song.

From this last batch you'll probably also enjoy Doesn't Really Matter and Together Again. This last one is probably her signature song, although Janet's career is too long and wide to consider just one signature song. :)

Thanks!

BONUS TRACK - JANET JACKSON's TOP ALBUMS part 2

5. Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989) - My rating: 75.8
Image
The second half of this album is much stronger than the first one imo.

4. janet. (1993) - My rating: 77.1
Image
Without Funky Big Band and New Agenda, this album would have been even better than what it is. Again, the second half of the album is stronger.

3. 20 Y.O. (2006) - My rating: 77.8
Image
A lovely R&B album. Imo it is a very balanced album. No perfect songs but all good.

2. All For You (2001) - My rating: 81.5
Image
I like each and every one of the 15 songs in this album, and that is a great achievement. I think it is with more light than Velvet, and it is a great step after such a gem. It is always difficult to make a follow up of a fantastic album, she did a great job here.

1. Velvet Rope (1997) - My rating: 87.7
Image
Perfection. I love this album. My top 10 could have been songs from here. Such an iconic piece of work. Intimate, deep, touching.

Jewel's TOP 50: Part 1
Image

50. Don't (Pieces Of You)
A lovely love song to start Jewel's journey. This first album is very raw and unplugged.

Please let me forget
all those sweet smiles
all of the passion
all of the heat, the peace, the pain
all those blue skies
where your words were my freedom

49. Sweet Home Alabama
I like her rendition of this song. It was a hint of what was about to happen: Jewel releasing some country music.

48. What's Simple Is True (Spirit)
I hated this song. Then I loved it. Then I hated it. Now I love it. Beautiful video.

The more I live
The more I know
What's simple is true

47. I Love You Forever (Sweet & Wild)
I lov ecountry music, and I think Jewel gives a quite personal approach to it. Her voice, her wording, it is very personal and different. Not completely country but very much like it.

46. The New Wild West (This Way)
Her country songs are very nice, but I prefer this style from her pop records. Great lyrics.

Privilege has ruled for thousands of years
Wars have been fought with bibles and tears
Yet liberation can't deny the temptation
And soon becomes the oppressor

Show me a leader who's fit to lead
Who don't sew his seed in anything
Wounded enough to breed
Because after all what fun is power
If you can't act like a rock star?

45. Jupiter (Spirit)
During her first era (POY and Spirit) she did a lot of releasing songs with polished production as singles but the album versions were more raw and intimate. This is a case where the original is much more interesting. In fact, the video version is souless.

44. I'm Sensitive (Pieces Of You)
This songs from POY gives me chills as they take me back to those adolescent eyars in which I was passionately discovering new music. This is simple. This is easy. This is perfect.

43. Serve The Ego (This Way)
A very different song from her, interesting, catching, unexpected, sensual. Like it a lot, her voice here is great.

42. Bad As It Gets (Sweet & Wild)

41. Again And Again (Goodbye Alice In Wonderland)
Another hate-love-hate-love song for me. Love it today.

ohhhh yesss, here for this!

Don't, Jupiter, I'm Sensitive, Serve the Ego and Again and Again are all so good! I'm Sensitive is in my top 5 Jewel songs for sure.

Don't like the country stuff at all, find it a bit beneath her tbh. There is only 1 song I like from her country period (Perfectly Clear and S&W) and it's because it's so raw and non-polished and very early-Jewel, hopefully it will appear in your list.

Her country stuff will be here but not in big dosis. I also prefer her pop/folk work. But I think that throughout her career she had many country moments, such as The New Wild West, and for me those are incredible. The This Way album has many great songs that are very country-like.

Yeah, I agree, This Way had cool country elements, but the full-on country in her later albums is really cheesy and nothing like New Wild West (which is a good song)

There probably won't be any Lullaby songs on your list, amirite

Jewel's TOP 50: Part 2
Image

40. Everybody Needs Someone Sometime (This Way)
A funny and country infused song.

39. Barcelona (Spirit)
"where churches don't have windows but graveyards do"

38. Cleveland (This Way)
Another great country stryle song from her pop album This Way.

37. Where You Are (Goodbye Alice In Wonderland)
Lovely song, Lovely live performance. Just beautiful.

36. Love Me, Just Leave Me Alone (This Way)
I love this, the guitar and the lyrics.

They said
You were a wise man
When did they teach
A wise man to pout?
I tried to forget you
but you tied bells to your name
They jingled everytime i thought of you
without shame
I tried to be unlovable
Why couldn't you do the same?

35. 2 Find U (0304)
Well, this is from her poppier era. I am not completely fond of this era, hated it with all my heart, but then I realized it is great for artists to try different things. Then you'll have your faves and hates, but diversity is good. This song is catchy.

34. Only One Too (Goodbye Alice In Wonderland)
Back to a more pop-rock sound.

33. Little Sister (Pieces Of You)
I really loved the fact that in this album she put some live songs, very raw, unplugged and honest.

My little sister is a Zombie in a body
with no soul in a role she has learned to play
in a world today where nothing else matters
but it matters, we gotta start feeding our souls
Not our addiction or afflictions of pain
to avoid the same questions we must
ask ourselves to get any answers
We gotta start feeding our souls
have been lost to the millions with lots
who feed on addiction selling pills and what's hot
I wish I could save her from all their delusions
all the confusion
of a nation that starves for salvation
but clothing is the closest to approximation
to God and He only knows that drugs
are all we know of love

32. Jesus Loves You (This Way)
Like this lyrics.

They say that Jesus loves you
What about me?
They say that money breaks you
I still wanna see
They say you're only half alive
Till you give extra whitening a try

Well I wanna see, I wanna see
What can you do for me?

Showing ta-tas on the TV is OK
I wanna be OK, too
Having my picture in a magazine makes me special
How special are you?
They say if I donate, even I
Can buy a lot in heaven before I die?

31. Stephenville, TX (Goodbye Alice In Wonderland)
I really like the introspective part of some lyrics in this album.

I was raised a farmgirl
I'm too far from home, all alone on the road
Trying to figure out who I am now the the stardust has turned to sand
And the sand has turned to stone on the starmaking machine

Lullaby is, weirdly enough, my 2nd favourite Jewel album. The arrangements are much more simple than in her later albums (I like the Goodbye Alice album, but the production gets too polished at places and ruins some potentially good songs), mostly just guitar or piano, her voice is absolutely beautiful, and the lyrics are like poetry. Sure, maybe 2 or 3 songs are "classic lullabies", but the rest is to me just like peaceful relaxing poetry. Her songwriting really shines here.

I didn't check out the other children's album because the cover is hideous and the titles seem like actual stupid kiddie songs, so that's a big no-no for me. But shame she marketed Lullaby as a kid lullabies album as it's so much more. With a better cover, different promo and a small revision of the tracklist, it could have been a great "adult" back-to-roots Jewel album (which is how I still look at it). I probably wouldn't even bother checking it out if a Jewel fan hadn't told me that I should

From your list:
I love Barcelona, Where You Are, Little Sister and Jesus Loves You. Little Sister is something special really. The whole album is.

Jewel's TOP 50: Part 3
Image

30. Fragile Heart (Goodbye Alice In Wonderland)
The version in this album is far superior than the one in 0304 imo. It is a naive but sweet song. The bridge's lyrics are really true.

Only fools believe that
Nothing changes, nothing leaves
But I need 2 believe that we at least
Will have some dignity
'Cause everything changes
Nothing stays the same
But that's no excuse 2 be casual
Or 2 place the blame
U have 2 be careful with me

29. Words Get In The Way (Goodbye Alice In Wonderland)
One of the reasons I love this song is because I misshear all the time, at the begining, Jewel singing "call me battlecat" instead of "Come here buttercup"... My love for the He-Man cartoon interfere with my english listening

28. Intuition (0304)
I like the song, I find it clever, and the video's idea is cool, but it was poorly executed imo. Anyway, the song is good.

27. Satellite (Goodbye Alice In Wonderland)
I like this live version a lot, the strings are a good addition.

26. Stay Here Forever (Sweet & Wild)
Naive, silly, but aa catchy country song.

25. No Good In Goodbye (Sweet & Wild)
Another cool country song.

24. Stronger Woman (Perfectly Clear)
Ok ok, last country song for today :D But I like it!

23. Drive To You (Goodbye Alice In Wonderland)

22. Down So Long (Spirit)
Second single from Spirit. I liked it a lot back then, now it is great but not top 20 material.

21. Angel Standing By (Pieces Of You)
I like this lullaby a lot. Maybe her voice is a little irritating and that's why it is not higher. But I must have heard this song 105056461056 times. Such a great album!

Jewel's TOP 50: Part 4
Image

20. Till It Feels Like Cheating (Perfectly Clear)
A cool country song to start today's update

19. 2 Become 1 (Perfectly Clear)
I couldn't find the country version, which is superior. But this one is fine.

18. Till We Run Out Of Road (This Way)
She wrote this song with her husband. I love the honesty in these lyrics.

17. Deep Water (Spirit)
Like parts of the lyrics

And you try to find yourself
In the abstractions of religion
And the cruelty of everyone else
And you wake up to realize
Your standard of living somehow got stuck on survive
...
You wake up to realize your only friend
Has never been yourself or anybody who cared in the end
That's when suddenly everything fades or falls away
'Cause the chains which once held us are only the chains which we've made

16. Innocence Maintained (Spirit)

15. This Way (This Way)
A simple and sweet love song.

14. Pieces Of You (Pieces Of You)
Beautiful and raw song. Love it

She's an ugly girl, does it make you want to kill her?
She's an ugly girl, do you want to kick in her face?
She's an ugly girl, she doesn't pose a threat.
She's an ugly girl, does she make you feel safe?
Ugly girl, ugly girl, do you hate her
'Cause she's pieces of you?
She's a pretty girl, does she make you think nasty thoughts?
She's a pretty girl, do you want to tie her down?
She's a pretty girl, do you call her a bitch?
She's a pretty girl, did she sleep with your whole town?
Pretty girl, pretty girl, do you hate her
'Cause she's pieces of you?
You say he's a faggot, does it make you want to hurt him?
You say he's a faggot, do you want to bash in his brain?
You say he's a faggot, does he make you sick to our stomach?
You say he's a faggot, are you afraid you're just the same?
Faggot, Faggot, do you hate him
'Cause he's pieces of you?
You say he's a Jew, does it mean that he's tight?
You say he's a Jew, do you want to hurt his kids tonight?
You say he's a Jew, he'll never wear that funny hat again.
You say he's a Jew, as though being born were a sin.
Oh Jew, oh Jew, do you hate him
'Cause he's pieces of you?

13. Life Uncommon (Spirit)

And lend your voices only to sounds of freedom
No longer lent your strength to that
which you wish to be free from
Fill you lives with love and bravery
And we shall lead a life uncommon

12. Near You Always (Pieces Of You)
Beautiful.

11. Have A Little Faith In Me
I was addicted to this one for so long! Love how it grows and grows, the last part is perfect.
