Hello everyone, new and old, family and friend!

Over the past year, I've been putting together a list of my favorite 5000 songs of all time. In another thread here in "Personal Charts", I've posted the yearly charts that I used to compile the overall lists. They will be the basis for the chart I'll post here. There will be a few new additions as I realized I left out a few songs (or heard some on the radio that I knew I needed to include). This chart will take a very long time to post, so ya'll will have to bear with me. I'll post about 25 a day initially, all the way down to 1001. I'll try to include links for the songs as well so you can all check them out too.

Here are the "rules" for the chart:

1. Any song I've heard is eligible: rock, soul, hip hop, country, jazz, classical, dance, TV Theme, Disney song, movie theme, etc.

2. The chart is biased toward songs from the time I've been alive (which may be almost inevitable). The 80's have the most songs, followed by the 90's. I started listening to the radio in 1978.

3. A couple of genres are underrepresented: American country music (I've never been able to get into it), jazz (just starting to expose myself), classical (ditto with jazz), and hip hop (I'm an old school rap fan. Recent stuff doesn't do much for me).

4. All songs are songs I really like, from 5000 on down. The order, especially early in the chart, is rather random, but I can say I like 4000 more than 4500.

Before I start, i'd love some predictions for songs that you think may make my Top 10. I hope many of you will be surprised by some of them when I make it that high, probably late next year.

Thanks to my wife, my parents (especially my dad, and his collection of every 45 single known to man), my brother (go Weezer, man), my uncle Danny (who gave me my first album, Queen's "The Game", and taught me to love rock), my late friend Kenrick (who exposed me to early hip hop in the 80s), my college roommate Ron (who exposed me to reggae), and UKMIX, especially Matthew, Tom, and Bry, whose charts were an inspiration to me to keep going. When it's all said and done, I'll post the entire chart on a personal website I hope to set up soon.

Most of all, feedback, positive and negative, is very welcome.

Oh, and yes, I do have WAAAAY too much time on my hands. No need to remind me... :D

I'll be looking forward to your chart - if only to expand my musical knowledge (especially the 60's and 70's) so I'll take any recommendations and comments into consideration!

Thanks for the replies, folks! :D

Since the chart covers only songs through December 2004 (2005 isn't even over yet and the songs are still too current to judge), let me list just a few of my favorites from this year, all of which would be high on the chart, if eligible. I'll list them randomly, so I won't ruin my Top 150 of 2005 in two weeks).

1. Gorillaz, "Feel Good, Inc": so incredibly catchy, I'm not tired of it, even though it got massive play all summer locally.

2. Madonna, "Hung Up": My current #1. Her best song in YEARS! Thank ABBA for that!

3. U2, "City Of Blinding Lights": My first #1 of the year. It's a song that mesmerizes me, it's so beautiful. Gotta love these Irish blokes. Did I ever mention I'm 65% Irish by blood?

4. Breaking Benjamin, "Sooner Or Later": wonderful rock balladish song from early in the year. Not much play even here.

5. Gorillaz, "Dare": Thanks to UKMIX for getting me into this one early. As I've said many times, this song kicks royal a**.

6. Weezer, "Beverly Hills": the definition of catchy. They're my brother's favorite band for good reason. Hooky song.

7. Kelly Clarkson, "Behind These Hazel Eyes": took me a while to get into Kelly. This was the song that got my attention first.

8. Staind, "Right Here": Aaron Lewis just does it, time and again. One of the few rockers these days who can SING!

9. Rise Against, "Swing Life Away": another great rock ballad. Shoulda been a bigger hit.

10. Franz Ferdinand, "Do You Want To": current song. Blasted up my chart a couple of weeks ago. Love it.

All of these would have been top 300 or so if given the chance.

I'll post the just missed later tonight or early tomorrow. I'm still checking the list for duplicates or errors (though a few always sneak in).

Let me also thank all who have commented on my chart over the past year, especially three souls with tastes scarily similar to mine: pepster (with a great chart of his own!!), Marius (potojr-- looking forward to YOUR chart--- we think very alike), and, of course, George, who has been a chart regular (and I deeply appreciate that... be sure to point out all my mistakes here too!!! :D ).

Just missed next!

Sorry for the delay folks. Still in the process of shaping the order. Over 6200 songs to go through, trying to avoid duplicates.

The lowest ranking song (about 6208) will be:

Olivia Newton-John, "Sam" (1977): a song from Olivia's more countryish days, this one squeaks in at the bottom of the "Missed" group, which I hope to post ASAP.

thanks, pepster, for going through ALL those charts! :o :D Nice calls. It'll be a late 2006 day that you'll find out if you're right. No call on #1, I see.

For those who are waiting (I'm amazed you're out there), all is checked now through 1997. Only 7 years left to go. The first post should be coming up shortly.

Hello to all! At long last, the chart is done. I'm still tabulating the statistics (how each year did, how each decade did, how each artist did), but the songs are in order. The lower end is somewhat random. As we enter the chart itself, things are slightly more methodical. As expected, the 80's and 90's dominated. However, a pleasant number of pre-1978 songs made the chart. Prepare for some very surprising low entries as I count down the "missed" songs. If I deserve condemnation, let me have it. Every song here is one I like, more or less, some just more than others. If there are any errors I missed (wrong year, song twice), please let me know.

Enough talk. Let the music do the talking! Comments are very welcome. If anyone is interested, these lists will also be available at my new blog-website: tdc2000.blogspot.com

How many old songs! I don't know a lot of them, I wasn't born then

What I know is Maroon 5 and some more. I really love Whitney's 'I Will Always Love You'.
Never gonna give it up,
I never wanna stop...

Again, some true classics lost there!

5950. “Gone Till November” – Wyclef Jean (1998)

Here's the others that I think are good...
5756. “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” – Eve w/ Gwen Stefani (2001)
5758. “Wrong Impression” – Natalie Imbruglia (2002)
5771. “Beauty School Dropout” – Frankie Avalon (1978)

5969. “Insatiable” – Darren Hayes (2002)

However... these ones... almost all of them in my opinion don't even deserve a place on a list like this! Those that do, are about the right place being SO far down
5762. “Tie A Ribbon ‘Round The Ole Oak Tree” – Tony Orlando & Dawn (1973)
5770. “Girl You Know It’s True” – Milli Vanilli (1989)

Call yourself a Queen fan and you have "Don't Stop Me Now" and "Bicycle Race" below even Milli Vanilli? Oh dear!

LOL! Aww, c'mon, that Milli Vanilli one ain't THAT bad. My wife was so annoyed when I kept singing "I want to ride my bi---cycle, I want to ride my biiiike" that I guess I had to put it lower. To tell the truth, I didn't know those two Queen songs before I started. I think I knew only "We Are The Champions" plus. Early Queen is something I need to still study further (excepting that "Bohemian" one...)
"And keep reaching for the stars...." Casey Kasem RIP 1932-2014
