ALBUM COUNTDOWN | Year-End Charts 2016

50. Amaranthe – Maximalism
Image
Chartrun: *3*-5-3-7-14-19-Out / 6w
Certification: -
The countdown starts with the Scandinavian heavy metal band Amaranthe, who are famous in that genre for combining female pop vocals, male rock vocals and male metal growls into their songs. Their first entry ever on my album charts. Highlight: Boomerang
49. Passenger – Young As The Morning Old As The Sea
Image
Chartrun: 3-*2*-5-8-14-19-Out / 6w
Certification: -
I really disliked Passenger back when he released “Let Her Go”, so it was really weird that I was looking forward to this release, and it’s a pretty good folk-pop album. Probably too many ballads, and I would have loved even more folk elements. Highlight: Beautiful Birds feat. Birdy
48. Fifth Harmony – 7/27
Image
Chartrun: *6*-9-8-11-14-20-15-16-15-20-Out / 10w
Certification: -
The sophomore album by Fifth Harmony was as solid as their debut, with some other solid tracks. Nothing comes even close to the lead track though. Highlight: Work From Home
47. The Weeknd – Starboy
Image
Chartrun: *1*-1-2-2- / 4w
Certification: -
One of the reasons why I hate late releases is the Year-End Charts, as late releases often have it harder to get a good placement, and The Weeknd’s latest album is a good example. “Starboy” is not as strong as “Beauty Behind The Madness”, but is definitely another strong release from the Canadian R&B-singer. I’ll see him live soon, so he should have another successful year in 2017. Highlight: Rockin’
46. Maren Morris – Hero
Image
Chartrun: *3*-4-6-11-16-Out-RE 13-15-Out / 7w
Certification: -
Country newcomer Maren Morris released her debut album “Hero” in 2016 and already got nominated for a few Grammys in 2017. This is a really good album from start to finish, and I hope she wins some awards in February. Highlight: Sugar
45. Dolly Parton – Pure & Simple
Image
Chartrun: *4*-6-5-8-11-14-19-Out / 7w
Certification: -
From a country newcomer to a country legend. Dolly Parton’s 43rd album is another solid one, though not as strong as the previous release “Blue Smoke”. Highlight: Pure And Simple
44. David Bowie – Blackstar
Image
Chartrun: *2*-3-7-12-14-12-17-Out / 7w
Certification: -
David Bowie’s last album is very dark and atmospheric, and I really liked that. Highlight: Lazarus
43 Anna Känzig – Sound And Fury
Image
Chartrun: 6-*4*-5-10-19-15-12-14-Out / 8w
Certification: -
One of the rare cases when I really like an album by a swiss artist, and “Sound And Fury” is even the most successful release from Switzerland on this years countdown. A great pop album. Highlight: Drive All Night
42. Tom Odell – Wrong Crowd
Image
Chartrun: 5-4-*3*-6-8-12-Out / 6w
Certification: -
While I always liked “Another Love”, I never cared to check out his debut album, so “Wrong Crowd” was his first full-length release that I’ve heard, and it was a really good one. Highlight: Wrong Crowd
41. Melanie Martinez – Cry Baby
Image
Chartrun: 5-3-*2*-5-9-15-19-Out / 7w
Certification: -
Someone to keep an eye on is Melanie Martinez. Her bubbly debut “Cry Baby” already got a lot of my attention, and I’m sure that her upcoming second album could be even better. Highlight: Play Date

"Cry Baby" is such an amazing album. :D I also think that "Play Date" is the highlight on it, but I love nearly every song on that album anyway.

Tansike wrote:Aww that's so nice to hear. It's really touching. I also love the whole setting (it was shot in Iceland, i really want to go there one day <3) plus i'm a fan of monster things anyway, and that monster is just soooo cute somehow  Plus it was released at a special time for me so it has a bit of a special meaning / connection, that often helps a lot as well.

As nice as "On My Mind" may be, i think this was the absolute wrong choice for the lead track and was one of the reasons why this campaign was as messy as it was. But hey, i just remember that it still was a nice success for her, the album went Platinum in the UK (300k), sold nicely in the US, did well in other countries as well. Compared to other albums it still was a success, it was just a let down in the UK due to the fact that her other two albums were massive over here... let's hope they've learned their lesson. And this probably also means we will get new music sooner, otherwise this era could have went much longer = new music later...

That's really strange as most fans from her and/or the album really enjoyed STS right from the beginning, and it was my favorite song of the record when it came out  but you still enjoy it, right? So there would have been worse choice... and as you say, it became a hit for her, that's always nice to see :)

Haha funny that you're posting this pic by Mike cause i was just listening to him yesterday and saw his LastFM profile pic and was like :o I'm probably too thirsty but is his body really that tasty? :o I'm an even bigger fan now
Iceland for your honeymoon, perhaps...?

Ah, interesting. Although "On My Mind" is far from my favorite Delirium track, I hadn't really blamed it for the album's under-performance as much as the mess that unfolded with the singles that followed it...but you might have a point. Maybe OMM doomed the project from the very start. :x

For sure...well, at least it's no "Leave Me Lonely" ;) If my YEC were a Top 100 instead of a Top 50, STS would've landed in the 70's (I calculated points for a bunch of extra songs to make sure that I definitely had the highest 50.)

No such thing as "too thirsty" when it comes to Mike 8-) He. is. FIT. - and I'm SO glad you see it too!

• My fave Tarja track is the one that comes nowhere near your Top 10  A bit surprising that the year's longest-running-No. 1 (by far) is "only" No. 10, but release date really can make a difference.
:o The video for your No. 9 :o How am I supposed to focus on the song after an opening like that??? **Deep breaths** **Cold shower** The chorus is definitely catchy, though!
• You mention that "The Arena" is "one of way too few instrumental songs" on Lindsey's latest album, but I thought she ONLY did instrumental tracks? Does she actually sing on a lot of her songs as well, or does she recruit guest vocalists à la Calvin Harris, David Guetta, etc.? Are there any tracks of hers with vocals that you'd recommend?
• "Kill V. Maim" is far-and-away my favorite of your Top 10 entries, but that's probably not much of a surprise  Such an awesome, high-energy track (and I can see how it kind of suits your metal tastes.) The video is so bizarre and intense - and therefore perfectly fitting! I'll definitely be gushing about it more over on my YEC. ;)
• WOAH @ "Lost On You" topping the Swiss airplay charts for NINE WEEKS :o Glad to see it's getting some truly proper recognition somewhere beyond UKMIX! It had such an interesting story on your weekly chart, and I'm really glad it managed to do this massively well in the end.
• Ha, like Akini said, OUCH @ Selena getting stuck at No. 2 for the fourth time  That seems like quite some shade for an artist you supposedly adore! Your assessment of KEWK is really on-point, though, and its subtlety compared to her other offerings really does help it stand apart. Although I'm still more drawn to the in-your-face/ears catchiness of "Hands To Myself", there's no denying that KEWK has the best message/lyrics among the Revival singles.
• Now that Kerli's started to win me over with "Spirit Animal", I should re-visit some of her older entries. "Feral Hearts" is already sounding better than I remember! ;)

Great to see Starboy so high already :D

I loved Cry Baby, I wasn't sold with her pre-album singles but when the full album came out I finally got what the appeal was. I'm so glad that Play Date is your highlight, it's my favourite song too. Isn't it weird that it was a deluxe track? I can't wait for her next album, I think it could be pretty big in terms of its debut week (I think it could pull numbers like Badlands did).

Hope to see the Weeknd have a huge impact on your 2017 charts. Stellar chart run thus far!

I never got around to listening to that Maren Morris album in full, but the handful of songs I have heard are strong!

I just bought Wrong Crowd and while it's a bit patchy for me, the single choices and title track are so strong.

As if you've listened to 50 albums! Also, woop for Selena at no.2 in the singles!

Hmm no, I don’t think Iceland would be a good destination for honeymoon…

Well I guess we will never know. At least she scored a hit with it, I guess that’s already a good thing :)

Ah 70s is still a nice result :)

YASSS

Haha I know… but I guess it wasn’t the biggest surprise since I never talked about it as positive as I was talking about the others. And yes, the late release date definitely made the difference. One more week on the weekly charts and it would have been at #8 on the YEC, another one more and it would have been at #6…

You didn’t know it? He’s handsome, isn’t he?

It’s more like Calvin Harris etc. From 14 tracks, 8 have a feature. Well there are four songs more on the deluxe edition, and all of them are without vocals, but it’s still way too much for her. She used to do just instrumental songs; her debut had no vocals, her second album had two features. Yes there are, especially these two: ”Brave Enough” feat. Christina Perri and ”Where Do We Go” feat. Carah Faye. Plus the ones on my countdown  She did one track where she sings on her own, but she’s not a singer at all. She was still brave enough to sing live, here’s the performance of ”Firefly”. It’s not on the album, but I thought maybe you’re interested in it since she sings on her own :)

Yes LP’s song was massive on the radios over here. A shame streaming never picked it up otherwise it would have been even bigger…

#2 is still better than hundreds of other songs though  Glad you like the lyrics as well there :)

That sounds awesome!! :o You should check out “Diamond Hard” (if you haven’t yet), somehow I think you may like it a lot! :)

It will most likely be even higher on next years list 8-)

I don't even know which songs were released prior the album release as i didn't follow her then, only when the album was released i checked it out and immediately liked it. Ha yeah it's strange how often it happens that a deluxe track is the highlight, Gwen's album is a good example as well there. And i'm excited as well, i think she'll be quite big too! :)

I hope you'll find the time to do so as it's really good :)

Kinda agree. It's a good album, but apart from the title track there's nothing that really impresses me.

Oh is 50 a lot for you? Not all of these 50 are releases from 2016, but 177 different albums made my weekly chart in 2016 in total... Glad you like her entry! :D

ALBUM COUNTDOWN | Year-End Charts 2016

40. Foxes – All I Need
Image
Chartrun: *2*-2-3-7-12-14-17-Out / 7w
Certification: -
While Foxes’ debut never really got me apart from its title track, her second album “All I Need” got me right from the start. A great pop release that deserved much more success than it got. Highlight: Cruel
39. Jamala – 1944
Image
Chartrun: *1*-5-5-3-7-13-Out / 6w
Certification: -
Jamala’s ESC winning track “1944” was accompanied by an album with the same name. Unfortunately, shortly after downloading it through Apple Music, some songs got restricted and I wasn’t able to listen to them anymore, which explains its sharp drops on my weekly chart. Still a great alternative pop album. Highlight: My Lover
38. Nina Kraljic – Samo
Image
Chartrun: *1*-2-4-7-10-14-17-Out / 7w
Certification: -
From one ESC artist to another… Nina Kraljic not only impressed me with her ESC track “Lighthouse”, but also with her debut album “Samo”. While I found this album stunning on its first listen, I got over it faster than I should have. Highlight: Lay You Down
37. LP – Death Valley EP
Image
Chartrun: *2*-5-7-11-12-17-Out-RE 15-Out-RE 10-17-Out / 9w
Certification: -
Prior the album release of “Lost On You”, LP already released this “Death Valley” EP which benefitted a lot from the success of the single “Lost On You”. All other tracks also ended up on the album, so this EP left the Top20 once the album came out. Highlight: Lost On You
36. Lissie – My Wild West
Image
Chartrun: *1*-1-4-8-7-13-20-Out / 7w
Certification: -
Lissie’s record was a big surprise for me at the beginning of 2016, as I really loved “My Wild West” during the first few weeks. Highlight: Daughters
35. Agnes Obel – Citizen Of Glass
Image
Chartrun: 5-6-*4*-9-17-13-20-15-7- / 9w
Certification: -
An album that caught me by surprise. While I always knew who Agnes Obel was, I never checked an album out until 2016, when she released “Citizen Of Glass”, an album full of moody, melodic pop ballads. Highlight: Familiar
34. Bruno Mars – 24K Magic
Image
Chartrun: *1*-2-2-3-3- / 5w
Certification: -
Similar to The Weeknd’s “Starboy”, Bruno Mars’ latest album “24K Magic” suffers from a late release date. While I wasn’t blown away by this at first, I think it’s probably his most solid release to date now. Highlight: Perm
33. Twenty One Pilots – Blurryface
Image
Chartrun: 8-*2*-2-4-8-11-16-Out / 7w
Certification: -
Twenty One Pilots are definitely one of the biggest newcomers of 2016. “Blurryface” is a great album and I’m really looking forward to their upcoming projects. Highlight: Fairly Local
32. Meghan Trainor – Thank You
Image
Chartrun: *2*-3-6-11-13-13-16-12-16-Out-RE 19-Out / 10w
Certification: -
Following a very successful debut era, the expectations for Meghan Trainor’s second album “Thank You” were quite big, and she even exceeded them for me as I think this is a better album than her debut. Great pop songs from start to finish, a shame it wasn’t a bigger success. Here’s hope she will still release the best song of her career as the fourth single: “Kindly Calm Me Down”. Highlight: Kindly Calm Me Down
31. Tove Lo – Lady Wood
Image
Chartrun: *2*-2-3-5-8-15-17-16- / 8w
Certification: GOLD
This batch closes with another great pop release. Tove Lo already created a very good debut album with “Queen Of The Clouds”, and similar to Meghan’s case, she also did an even better job on her second album “Lady Wood”. One of many underrated artists these days. Highlight: Lady Wood

Below are my biggest favourites since the last comment I made in this thread (1,000 years ago).

Too keep the list manageable I'm only including songs I like a lot, and only the amazing ones (in 2016) are bolded:

244. Nina Kraljic Snijeg
210. Shura What's It Gonna Be?
192. Rachel Platten Fight Song
149. Rykka The Last Of Our Kind
135. Aura Love Somebody
134. Rebecca Black The Great Divide
129. Vanessa Mai Ich sterb für dich
114. The Veronicas In My Blood
109. Demi Lovato Body Say
106. Britt Nicole Through Your Eyes
105. Kelly Clarkson Piece By Piece
103. Britney Spears feat. G-Eazy Make Me...
98. Foxes – Cruel
84. Taylor Swift – Out Of The Woods
80. Hillary Scott & The Scott Family – Thy Will
79. Zoë – Loin d’ici
73. Selena Gomez – Same Old Love
63. Ellie Goulding – Still Falling For You
57. Nina Kraljic – Zaljuljali smo svijet
51. Anette Olzon – Vintersjäl
46. Christina Grimmie – Snow White
32. Carrie Underwood – Church Bells
31. Alan Walker – Faded
20. Jamie-Lee (Kriewitz) – Ghost
19. Ellie Goulding – Something In The Way You Move
16. MØ – Final Song
3. Nina Kraljic – Lighthouse

There are more songs on your YEC that I have listened to a decent amount, but these are probably the only ones I'd actually miss if I never heard them again. Nice work with the countdown overall though! Album comments will come later.

Foxes - I never listened to the album in full but I know a few of the tracks and they're really nice, especially Cruel and If You Leave Me Now.

LP - I've been listening to this a lot since I discovered Lost On You. It's a really great EP, I love 'Other People', the whistles are so beautiful

Twenty One Pilots - I haven't listened to this album much. I listened to it several times when Stressed Out was starting to blow up and really liked it. 'Hometown' is really different from anything else but I love it, probably my favourite track. Their next album is going to be huge I reckon.

Tove Lo - I loved this album! I'll save my thoughts on this album for my countdown

Glad you like so many songs a lot! :D

Especially all the ones that made my main countdown.

And thanks a lot :D

What :o I thought you heard it in full... but glad you heard at least a few tracks and liked them.

Fantastic!! Very glad to hear this. It's a shame that her new album isn't out in the UK though, otherwise you would have a bit more to listen to. Well, the album only has ten tracks and all "Death Valley" songs are there too, but the five other songs are really good too. And glad to hear this for "Other People", as it's been the follow-up single for "Lost On You" :)

Another surprise, as i thought you liked them a lot so i thought you also listened to this album a lot... I think so too.

Good :)

ALBUM COUNTDOWN | Year-End Charts 2016

30. Christina Grimmie – Find Me
Image
Chartrun: *7*-10-9-7-9-12-15-13-16-15-18-Out / 11w
Certification: GOLD
The first of three entries on my countdown for the late Christina Grimmie is her debut EP. Great pop songs, good melodies and an awesome voice. Highlight: Not Fragile
29. Christina Grimmie – With Love
Image
Chartrun: 7-*4*-6-6-9-10-14-17-18-17-Out / 10w
Certification: GOLD
And here’s already her second entry. While I wasn’t impressed with her only full-length album at first, some of the tracks were growers for me and now I think it’s really good overall. Deserved more attention. Highlight: With Love
28. Inna – Inna
Image
Chartrun in 2015: *2*-5-5-3-8-13-18-13- / 8w
Chartrun in 2016: 7-*4*-6-9-14-18-20-Out-RE 20-5-8-15-Out / 11w
Certification: PLATINUM
Ranking in the YEC 2015: #34
The self-titled release of dance-pop queen Inna already made some impact in 2015, but also showed some success at the beginning of 2016 when she released “Bad Boys”, one of the album highlights, as a single. Great dance-pop music, she knows what she can do best. The best song is surprisingly a non-dance track though. Highlight: Devil’s Paradise
27. Britney Spears – Glory
Image
Chartrun: 2-2-*1*-2-5-9-16-Out / 7w
Certification: GOLD
The position for Britney’s latest release may be a shock for some people, but while I loved everything on “Glory” during its first two or three weeks, I got over it very fast afterwards, and now I think it’s the weakest album I know from her. It’s still a solid pop record with some good songs, but nothing that will ever make my best of list from Brit. A shame. Highlight: Clumsy (yes, I’m serious)
26. Faun – Midgard
Image
Chartrun: 3-5-4-*2*-4-6-13-Out / 7w
Certification: GOLD
The pagan-folk band Faun never got my attention in the past simply because of the language, as I usually never liked songs in german. Streaming made it way easier to check things out and when they released their new album “Midgard”, I immediately checked it out and even ended up adding another four albums from them to my library. Great music, but obviously just when you’re into that medieval stuff. Highlight: Federkleid
25. Rihanna – Anti
Image
Chartrun: 4-9-13-Out-RE 20-14-3-*2*-6-12-15-20-Out / 11w
Certification: GOLD
Rihanna’s “Anti” was a huge disappointment for me at first, but since she’s still one of my favorite artists ever, I bought tickets for her tour and saw her live last summer, which was also the reason why I finally got a lot more into the album and it came back to my weekly chart. It’s solid after all, but still weaker than the stuff she used to do. Highlight: Love On The Brain
24. Skylar Grey – Natural Causes
Image
Chartrun: 4-*3*-4-3-6-9-12-14-19-Out / 9w
Certification: GOLD
One of the biggest surprises and biggest discoveries of 2016 is Skylar Grey’s album “Natural Causes”. A very dark, moody album with some killer tunes. It was perfect for autumn, and her voice is great. No idea why she’s not bigger. Highlight: Come Up For Air
23. Sia – This Is Acting
Image
Chartrun: *1*-1-3-4-9-14-18-18-Out-RE 18-Out-RE 8-20-Out / 11w
Certification: GOLD
Sia is one of the best vocalists out there at the moment, and following a very successful era with “1000 Forms Of Fear”, the expectations on the follow-up were quite huge, and I think she did a great job on “This Is Acting”, which is easily better than the previous release for me. Apart from two fillers, there’s no weak track on here. Highlight: Cheap Thrills
22. Jamie-Lee – Berlin
Image
Chartrun: *3*-4-4-5-8-10-12-9-15-Out / 9w
Certification: GOLD
German pop singer Jamie-Lee also makes my countdown with her debut album “Berlin”. What started as a promising career ended up as a disappointment, as her management stopped all the promo out of a sudden after her flop at the ESC, which is criminal, as this album is really good. Awesome pop tracks, very well produced and obviously very well sung. Highlight: Berlin
21. Babymetal – Metal Resistance
Image
Chartrun: *1*-1-2-5-8-9-12-16-19-18-Out / 10w
Certification: GOLD
This group ends with Babymetal, three teenage girls from Japan who combine metal music with J-Pop. A special mash-up which doesn’t work for everyone, but as someone who likes this hard music I really like this combination. A great discovery for me at the beginning of 2016. Highlight: Meta Taro

"All I Need" is amazing. It's definitely one of my favourite albums of 2016. :)

I don't think that "Thank You" is better than Meghan's debut album, but still it's a very good album. I hope that we will get a fourth single, but I doubt it. :(

Concerning "Lady Wood", I agree with you. I also think that Tove Lo's second album is better than her debut album, which was a nice album as well. It's a shame that it wasn't as successful as her debut album.

"Glory" basically consists of several songs that are absolutely awful (e.g. "Invitation", "Clumsy", "Coupure Électrique"), but it also offers a few really great songs (e.g. "Slumber Party", "Change Your Mind", "Liar"). I can't really make my mind up about this album - it's definitely not bad, but there are too many horrible songs on it to say that it's good.

I discovered Skylar Grey's music as well in 2016. "Natural Causes" is a really decent album. :)

Britney - Much better effort from Britney than pervious albums. Probably her best since Blackout. The highlight being Clumsy though? Girl...

Rihanna - Great album! I think I prefer it to Unapologetic which got old fast for me. I think Loud and Talk That Talk were better though :P

Sia - I was pretty disappointed with this. 1000FOF was a great album and had very little filler whereas This Is Acting is the opposite in my opinion. Surprised you think theres not much filler

I'll look through the full list later but my favorite in the top 10 is probably Lost On You.

Cry Baby is the highlight for me. It took a few listens but after that I thought it was amazing. Soap, Play Date and Mr Potato Head are the highlights for me!

I also like Anti. I didn't at first but it grew on me.

Sia's album was hit or miss with me. A bit of a disappointment as a whole tbh. Footprints was my fav.

Foxes album was pretty good aswell. A few gems. Cruel, Body Talk and Wicked love are my favs.

Britney's album actually wasn't that bad minus a few disgusting songs. What was she thinking with those! Invitation, Man On The Moon and Make Me... are my favourites.

I still find it amazing that my least favourite 24K Magic song is your favourite; either way, I'm happy that the album grew on you.

My Glory experience was similar. It had a stunning first two to three weeks, with it even looking to be a guarantee to make my year-end Top 5 at one point, then the songs quickly lost their lustre. That's very unusual for Britney's music to not have any lasting power, but with all the bizarre things happening recently, I guess that's just another thing to add to the list.

I pretty much agree with everything you wrote about Anti. We share the same favourite track. 8-)

This Is Acting is sub-par for me. It has some big highlights, but also some very low points.
