Streaming has really knocked digital download sales for six. The current US #1 isn't even among the Top 40 most downloaded songs, and I suspect might not make it by the end of the year (Billboard or calendar). Even the numbers for "Wild Thoughts" are below what I expected. And when a lead single from Taylor Swift might struggle to cross the million-sales threshold, things are tough.

I'd agree with that, but streaming gains seem to be pretty close to matching the download losses, using that industry 150:1 ratio.

Here's a comparison of the number of songs on the current YTD Songs SPS list for 2017 vs the YTD Digital Songs from 5 years ago, the year downloads peaked.

Over 6m - 2017: 1 / 2012: 1
Over 5m - 2017: 2 / 2012: 3
Over 4m - 2017: 3 / 2012: 4
Over 3m - 2017: 11 / 2012: 10
Over 2m - 2017: 27 / 2012: 24

That's because the Taylor single isn't very good.

We talked about it in Taylor's chart thread. It was an event record. Great video, bitchy lyrics. It generated news headlines.

It's not a single that will be remembered musically years from now.

Thanks! So Rihanna's Anti will most likely be the highest-charting female album on the 2017 YEC. :o
Unless P!nk does more than ~750,000 in her first 4 weeks which I doubt will happen.

First time for this list, and some big variations from the pure sales version.

Nice to see Bob Marley's "Legend" right up there pulling in over 3,000 equivalent albums per week through streaming. Amazing to think he died a year before the CD era started, and yet his music keeps selling on every format that comes along.

A few vintage acts - Queen, Elton John, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson lose out on this list because they have competing collection albums. The weekly BB200 awards the TEA/SEA to whichever collection sold the most that particular week. Not sure how this is treated in the official year end charts though.

Digital sales in the USA alone are still higher than physical singles sales in any year of the 1990s worldwide.

^ I have 331,000 SPS this year for 2014 Forest Hills Drive - my list only included albums that were on the catalog chart all year. Oddly, the album remains a current title on BB's sales chart, but catalog on the SPS version, so maybe it should have been on the list.

The Pinkprint - 169,000

I'd guess Dark Sky Paradise at around 150,000

700,000 is quite possible. The last true number I have is 477,000 as at the end of March 2014.

Had a closer look at this, and the 700,000 now looks too high…
At the end of 2009, the main edition of the album had sold around 1,040,000. There also must have been a minor edition of the album with a separate scan total of around 70,000. These totals were merged mid-2010.
The 1,558,000 RTD you mention was week 46 of 2014, giving decade sales at that point of 448,000. I'd guess that number would have grown to around 465,000 by the end of 2014.
I'd guess 2015 sales at 80,000, 2016 70,000 and 2017 so far 50,000, which would put the decade to date total at around 665,000.
