"Family Affair" is a song that probably will never get old for me.

Love "Russian Roulette". I still remember when former friends were talking about this in school and that was the day I checked it out on the internet when I got home. I couldn'T believe this was RIHANNA (because it was so good and I "despised" her  )

04.(RE) Mary J. Blige - Family Affair (Best Comeback)
07.(NE) Tracy Chapman - Crossroads
15.(RE) Rihanna - Russian Roulette
20.(NE) Toto - Africa

'Russian Roulette' is underrated. 'Africa' is one of the best songs ever.

It's the PG-13 half of the full line I wanted to use.

Same here!

I remember "Russian Roulette" premiering on rihannanow.com. That dramatic intro was such an epic moment for me; it was a fantastic comeback single that deserved more chart success than it got.

I agree so much!!!

"Africa" isn't bad, but I don't think it's aged well.

Oh, yes! I just called this song to mind two weeks ago and here it is. :) Well, the video is absurd, but the track still stunning. Many good memories of 'Umbrella', 'Talk That Talk' (for me, another surprise in your chart), 'Man Down', 'Pour It Up, 'Russian Roulette', 'Te Amo' and 'California King Bed', of course.
Way too much Rihanna! :D

Hello Akini :D

Yay at the Rihanna domination. I look at these songs and think "why won't RiRi deliver gems like these anymore?"

I don't even think there's a single track i'd remove as either not heard or not keen. Perfect top 20. <3

Absolute highlights though :P

01.(RE) Rihanna - S&M (Best Comeback)
02.(RE) Rihanna - Umbrella (feat. Jay-Z)
03.(RE) Rihanna - Diamonds
15.(RE) Rihanna - We Found Love (feat. Calvin Harris)
17.(RE) Rihanna - FourFiveSeconds (feat. Kanye West & Paul McCartney)

I'd be on the floor shaking if Rihanna released a new single that ranked alongside the above elite group of songs better known as "OMG!!!!!!!11 AMAZING"

The pride is real 8-) I'm usually not too enticed by all the superhero-expanded-universe movies, but the critical acclaim, commercial mega-success, and cultural significance of this one have really piqued my interest.

Damn :o Definitely a video worthy of representing the soundtrack to that film. Truly cinematic - and it's like every 20-30 seconds they hit you with another stunning, intricate visual!

That game's a new one on me, so I'm not sure how it works, but have you submitted a UKMix Tape of your own yet? If so, I'd love to know what made the cut!

• Aw :D What an epic tRIbute! No "Birthday Cake" for the occasion, though? ;)
• It's a little unexpected to see "S&M" above the likes of "Diamonds" and "Umbrella", but I don't mind! Fitting for some frisky festive fun.
• I like how several of her features got a chance to shine here too - including that oft-forgotten M5 flop!

Yet another chart that's so good it hurts, Akini! :D

Glad you like so many songs from yesterday's chart. I think the "S&M" video is fun, and about as PG-13 as it could've been, lyrical content considered.

I'm glad "Umbrella" and "Diamonds" are among your elite class, as they're my clear Top 2 from RiRi.

I think she still has it within her to deliver some more high calibre songs. Anti was experimental, with some experiments producing more satisfying results than others, but Rihanna always figures it out eventually.

I think I was drawn to it because it was one of the first songs I'd heard on the subject matter that didn't outright reject it. The story is interesting, and you see so many examples of it in every day life.

I plan on seeing it again this weekend actually. It's the first time I'm actually paying to see a movie in theatres twice.

06. Elton John - It's Me That You Need

I have so many fond memories attached to "S&M". I was super obsessed with it when I first heard it. I still think it could be her catchiest song ever, though it's not quite my favourite from her.

Yeah, I listened to her entire singles catalogue yesterday actually. She's had such a career, and hopefully still has lots more in the tank!

In its defense, I've been loving the original for nearly 5 years now, which is quite the head-start...and as far as female popstars go, Christina has never been near the top for me...so it was already at a disadvantage from the get-go. I'm also not crazy about the addition of lines like "my body belongs to you when I'm on stage." The original version could work on different levels: as a straightforward submissive sex jam, but also a commentary on how the media and fans use/treat her...whereas the addition of lines like the one I quoted take away the simple sexy side of the song (which is how I always enjoyed interpreting the original.)

That said, it's nice to have a version of the song that doesn't come with the moral quandary of supporting something associated with Mr. Kelly...

JSparksFan wrote:I think I was drawn to it because it was one of the first songs I'd heard on the subject matter that didn't outright reject it. The story is interesting, and you see so many examples of it in every day life.
Ah, too true. Usually it's always "You've got another man/woman? OK, we're done, and here's my furious and/or heartbroken anthem." "Weekend" acknowledges how situations like that aren't always so simple/black-and-white (especially when there's feelings involved.)

JSparksFan wrote:I plan on seeing it again this weekend actually. It's the first time I'm actually paying to see a movie in theatres twice.
:o Damn, that blockbuster is even setting new Akini records!

:o I wasn't expecting to not recognize so many  But I guess that's probably (at least partially) the point? Huge thanks for taking the time to link to everything! It certainly represents your decade and genre-spanning tastes. "Runaround Sue" is a classic, "Spanish Harlem" is ringing some bells (but mostly makes me think of Elton John's "Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters"), "Haemorrhage" takes me back to my radio-listening youth, and both "Redbone" + "Mama's Broken Heart" were added to my library entirely thanks to you (though I'd forgotten just how brilliant the "Mama's Broken Heart" video is!)

How'd your mix go over in the game?

• "Make Me Feel" has me HOOKED! Somehow, that mouth/tongue-clicking background effect works brilliantly  The video is a visual treat too, and it's unreal how she can look SO stunning in so many completely different styles. I owe you for encouraging me to dip my toe in Janelle's waters with "Cold War", and now I'm gladly drowning in this one!
• Love the retro-Janet throwback! Even as a self-proclaimed fan, it took several years before I finally gave her first two albums a try (partially because they were really hard to come across legally, but their reputations definitely played a role in my reluctance too.) I can understand why she basically quarantines them off from the rest of her catalog, but they're really not entirely bad.
• Looks like Kacey didn't quite hit the mark with these latest offerings? Admittedly, they do make me miss the sassy, upbeat (and insightful) fun of "Follow Your Arrow" and "Biscuits"...but she was already catching some flack for "Biscuits" sounding too similar to FYA, so it makes sense to deliver something different for our first tastes of album #3.

Yet another chart that gives me all kinds of feels, Akini! :D

Aw, I don't think you appreciate Christina enough, but that's a story (and mission) for another day.

I definitely agree that the original version has better lyrics, though. In fact, I prefer the original to the remix; it's just that I love the all-female energy on the remix, and the performance was so divalicious that I couldn't resist it.

Yeah, and even though they wouldn't work for me, I think timesharing agreements could work for other people.

Yeah, I was definitely trying to introduce people to songs I felt they might not have heard.

I discovered that Fuel song through American Idol actually!

phoenix98 wrote:How'd your mix go over in the game?
It's one song per round pitted against one song from the other 23 mixtapes. I was in the Top 5 at one point in time, but Kylie's "Breathe" pushed me out of the cumulative Top 10 last round.

phoenix98 wrote:Do tell. ;)
I just vividly recall how much I loved it. Even before it became a single, I was obsessed with it. I don't think I've ever had that much love for a Rihanna non-single (which it was at that point in time) before or since. It really is her most immediate/catchy song ever.

Provided work cools down a bit over the next few weeks so I can have more slow/easy days to really explore Janet's catalogue, expect her to appear consistently over the course of the next...four to five months. :P

The songs are a bit tamer than I anticipated, but I will revisit them and see if there's any hidden magic.

I've really been enjoying her lately. I think her role in Moonlight really made me take notice of her as a singer, and I'm disappointed that it took so long to discover her brilliance!
