Yes! I never finished watching the final season, so I'm doing that now. I feel 13 again.

I enjoy it a lot more now than I did back then. It was an ingenious mash-up, though I'd agree that "Rumour Has It/Someone Like You" and "Survivor/I Will Survive".

Glad you like the other tracks. One of them will be #1 today. :D

Agreed! She's one of the most talented acts to have ever graced American Idol. "Had It All" is my favourite post-Idol song from her.

When you release the best album of 2018 (so far), you're going to have some staying power here!

On days when I don't update the tribute, Janet's hold on my chart diminishes, but she'll pick it up this weekend, I'm sure. Let's see how she fares against Eurovision!

SummerPeur wrote:LOVEEEEE HMA. I wish she did more of this style.
Co-sign! Songs like that one and "Tattooed Heart" - the more straightforward, traditional ballads - are right in the vein of Ariana's sweet spot. She can mix it up with bangers like "I'm into You", but she sounds best on "Honeymoon Avenue"-type tracks.

I remember "Unwritten" more for those Pantene shampoo commercials!

"Gold" never fails to lift my spirits.

Hi Akini :D

Loving the eurovision takeover right now. <3

Now that i'm over my personal favourite not winning, i do think Netta was a good winner. Toy definitely stood out and there must've been millions of people watching on Saturday night who were only discovering the song for the first time. It's quite refreshing to have a non-serious song winning as even novelty songs have their value too.

That said, Fuego was my banger from the entire contest. Ever since i first heard the song, i was captivated. Eleni owned that stage and her performance was so much more than just a eurovision performance. It was like watching someone in concert, and this only added to the heights of amazingness that Eleni brought to the show.

I wasn't as keen on Waylon's entry although when i watched his performance at the semi finals, i thought he really delivered but then again he didn't exactly have much competition on Thursday night.

César Thompson was the biggest surprise on the night for me. I actually do like Nobody but you but i just prefer other songs more. I still can't believe (well, i can  ) that the BBC rejected this song thinking it wasn't good enough. Although that makes me wonder how César might've fared had he been representing the UK instead.

DoReDoS had one of the most typical eurovision songs in the final. Ever since i first heard this i wasn't really sold on the song, but their staging definitely made them stand out. Again, i just prefer many other songs that made the final.

Monsters being one of them. It's the only eurovision entry that entered my chart before the contest but that was more down to the fact i already knew Saara from The x factor so i was treating this as if it was her first solo single. Saara totally owned it too so i was disappointed that her performance didn't resonate more with the voters. :( It's still one of my personal favourites from this year.

Not gonna lie, at first I'm like "You're pushing it with the semantics here..." - but Janelle's every choice (visually and sonically) is very deliberate, and I absolutely believe in the power of words, so I've come to really appreciate/admire your dedication to using her specific language. Putting "emotion" at the forefront when identifying this piece - something that isn't conveyed by "movie" or "visual" - truly suits the project. Right on.

• I had to peek in here when I saw a Pokémon in your thread title :o I haven't been following Eurovision, but it looks like you're pretty pleased with the winner? It's definitely a quirky, creative track sending a very worthwhile message.
• I'm lovin' this new lease on life for "Babe" lately! Your reaction in my thread a couple weeks ago seemed pretty tepid, so this recent 14 - *2* - 4 run is a really pleasant surprise! Not to harangue a simple typo (since I make more than my share basically every day), but you've got my mind racing with the fantasy-collabo-potential you've broached with that "Sugababes ft. Taylor Swift" credit on Saturday...
• "Ashes" has been faring pretty well too! I don't think I've seen you actually share your thoughts on that one yet, but its performance here is sending some encouraging signs!

Yet another chart that's not playing around, Akini! :D

This has happened every May since 2013, when Sven (Mainshow) introduced me to the competition.

Eh, I think 'novelty' undersells Toy's quality. Sure, it's nothing that critics would care to rate, but no other song this year captured the essence of Eurovision better, in my opinion. And Netta has got pipes for days! I prefer her live interpretation to the studio recording. This is my favourite ESC winner since Conchita's "Rise Like a Phoenix" in 2014, and I was rather obsessed with the song (and Conchita in general)!

JakeP wrote:That said, Fuego was my banger from the entire contest. Ever since i first heard the song, i was captivated. She definitely delivered a solid performance, fully deserving of her runner-up position. The song seems to be having the most commercial success of all the ESC entries this year, so I guess she'll win where the pockets are concerned.

It's not quite as mesmerising as "Calm After the Storm", but it's a solid country/pop/rock mash-up.

JakeP wrote:César Thompson was the biggest surprise on the night for me. I actually do like Nobody but you but i just prefer other songs more. I still can't believe (well, i can  ) that the BBC rejected this song thinking it wasn't good enough. Although that makes me wonder how César might've fared had he been representing the UK instead.
César has all the stage presence of a rotting pumpkin, but he is very easy on the eyes!

JakeP wrote:DoReDoS had one of the most typical eurovision songs in the final. Ever since i first heard this i wasn't really sold on the song, but their staging definitely made them stand out. Again, i just prefer many other songs that made the final.
Agreed (with the bolded bits)!

JakeP wrote:Monsters being one of them.
And last, but not least, my favourite performance the night of the grand final! I had no knowledge of either artist or song, but everything was on-point, and it's another instance in a long list of bizarre ESC finishes that this ended up second-to-last!

Putting "emotion" at the forefront when identifying this piece - something that isn't conveyed by "movie" or "visual" - truly suits the project. Right on.
Agreed. Janelle is a gem. <3

phoenix98 wrote:• I had to peek in here when I saw a Pokémon in your thread title :o I haven't been following Eurovision, but it looks like you're pretty pleased with the winner? It's definitely a quirky, creative track sending a very worthwhile message.
It's my favourite winner since 2014! She delivered a stunning performance Saturday. Let's see how long it can stay at the top here.

phoenix98 wrote:• I'm lovin' this new lease on life for "Babe" lately!
BLEH at my typo; I truly hate typos! I have to give you credit for encouraging me to revisit "Babe". It turned out to be a huge grower, and I might not have revisited it were it not for our "Say Something"/"Babe", Aguilera/T-Swizzle debate.

A Sugababes/Taylor Swift duet would be fun!

phoenix98 wrote:• "Ashes" has been faring pretty well too! I don't think I've seen you actually share your thoughts on that one yet, but its performance here is sending some encouraging signs!
I like it! It's nothing groundbreaking, but I always appreciate when a legend delivers quality music. We have so few of them still active.

Thanks for stopping by, Paul! :D
