1989 is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift. It was released on October 27, 2014, through Big Machine Records. Swift began preparing for the album during the same year that Red was released, and during a significant amount of media scrutiny. Over the course of the two-year songwriting period, she primarily collaborated with producers Max Martin and Shellback—Martin served as the album's executive producer alongside Swift. The album's title was inspired by the pop music scene of the 1980s, particularly Swift's birth year.

The album represents a sonic departure from the country music of her previous albums, and is described by Swift as her "first documented official pop album." In contrast to Swift's previous work, the production of 1989 consists of drum programming, synthesizers, pulsating bass, processed backing vocals, and guitars. 1989 received generally positive reviews from contemporary music critics and it was ranked as one of the best albums of 2014 by numerous publications, including Time, Rolling Stone, and Pitchfork Media.

After debuting at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200, 1989 sold 1.287 million copies during the first week of release. The total U.S. sales figure from the debut week of 1989 was the highest since 2002, and made Swift the first artist to sell one million or more copies of an album in a week-long period for three albums. 1989 eventually became the best-selling album of 2014 in the U.S. market and has sold over 5.35 million copies as of October 2015, while selling 8.6 million worldwide. Five singles have been released from the set: "Shake It Off", "Blank Space", and "Bad Blood" reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, while "Style" peaked at number six, and "Wildest Dreams" at number five. The singles have all reached number one on the Adult Top 40 and Mainstream Top 40 and all have received a multi-platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Swift scored 10 Grammy Award nominations for 1989, including Album of the Year, making it Swift's third album to receive the honor, following her win in 2010 for Fearless and her nod in 2013 for Red. In addition to the top prize, the album was also nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album, Swift's first nomination on the category. The first two singles "Shake It Off" (in 2014) and "Blank Space" (in 2015) were both nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance, marking Swift's second and third song to be nominated for all three simultaneously, after "You Belong with Me" in 2010. Fourth single "Bad Blood" was nominated for two awards, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Music Video.

"Shake It Off" is a song by American recording artist Taylor Swift for her upcoming fifth studio album, 1989. Written by Swift, Max Martin and Shellback, the single, a departure from her signature country pop musical style, is an uptempo pop track instrumented by trombone. The song premiered during a Yahoo! live stream session on August 18, 2014; its music video was also released the same day. Several hours later, "Shake It Off" was made available for digital download as the lead single from 1989.

"Shake It Off" received mostly positive reviews from music critics, who praised its musical style. Meanwhile, the music video received mixed reception, and was additionally criticized for a scene which involved twerking. "Shake It Off" debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the week ending September 6, 2014, becoming Swift's second number one single in the United States and the 22nd song to debut at number one in the chart's history. The song received a nomination for Favorite Song at the 2015 People's Choice Awards, and nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2015 Grammy Awards.

"Blank Space" is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift for her fifth studio album, 1989. It was written by Swift, Max Martin and Shellback. The song was released to contemporary hit radio by Republic Records on November 10, 2014 as the album's second single, after "Shake It Off" and is the second track on the album. Musically, it is an electropop and minimal pop song with lyrics that satirize the media's perception of Swift and her relationships. "Blank Space" was a commercial success, having reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 following "Shake It Off". Swift became the first woman in the Hot 100's 56-year history to succeed herself at the top spot. The song has also topped charts in Canada and Australia, and peaked in the top ten in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, South Africa, and other countries.

The song received its first televised performance at the 2014 American Music Awards and as part of "Taylor Swift's 1989 Secret Session with iHeartRadio" on October 27, 2014 in New York City.

It was released to radio by Republic Records, in partnership with Swift's label Big Machine Records, on February 9, 2015, as the album's third single after "Blank Space."

"Style" received positive reviews from music critics, most of whom praised the '80s-styled production and its 'thrilling' tone. "Style" has peaked at number six on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming the third consecutive top-10 single from 1989 in the country, and entered the top-10 on charts of numerous regions, including Australia, Canada, and South Africa. It also made the top 40 in countries like the United Kingdom, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Ireland, New Zealand and the Netherlands.

"Wildest Dreams" is a song recorded by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift for her fifth studio album, 1989. The song was released to radio by Big Machine Records on August 31, 2015, as the album's fifth single. Swift co-wrote the song with its producers Max Martin and Shellback. Musically, "Wildest Dreams" is a ballad with a prominent dream pop influence, with the lyrics describing Swift's plea for her lover to remember her.

The song received positive reviews from music critics, who compared it to the work of Lana Del Rey and commended its composition. After its release as a single, it reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the fifth consecutive top-10 song from 1989 and Swift's 19th top-10 hit on the chart. It also became her sixth chart topper on the Radio Songs chart.

I think her opening sales will decline this time around. Maybe she'll still be able to open with 1 million+, but she's not going to sell more than she did with Red.

i think only Taylor or Adele actually can pull huge sales off. Maybe not another one-million, however, her sales will be significantly higher than what others score

I agree, I'm sure she'll achieve another 1+ debut, and reach 2M in the US easily, however not sure about the climb to 3M.

It would be interesting to see how things go for Taylor with this era, because I feel like her image was a little bit hurt during Red and the album became her shortest charting album on BB200.

But she has a lot of dedicated fans that will support her and I am pretty sure they will be there for her.
Seven number ones on Billboard Hot 100 and fourteen top ten hits since 2010/ Bruno Mars.

I wonder if she'll break the record for fastest rise to #1 on iTunes...again.

I'm excited! :D I expect nothing less than 400K for the single. Depending on how well that one's received, as well as the promo singles that are sure to follow, I think she could maybe manage a third one million debut week.

I'm here for 700K debut or more for the album. Sales have taken a serious dive, even first weeks. If she gets a million, great. But I hope people don't do "she fell off" talk if she doesn't quite reach those heights
I was waiting for Bey to drop so she could show that T&A arent the only ones smashing album SALES!!!

I think she's coming for a 700 - 800 K debut, but not onlye because of sales' dive, but because her pop side on the Red era.
