The Lion King

'The Lion King' is getting a 'live-action' remake, with Jon Favreau to direct

It’s the circle of life in Hollywood: “The Lion King” is being remade, and Jon Favreau’s in charge.

The Oscar-winning 1994 animated film, which raked in $968.8 million worldwide, including $422.8 million domestically, is being fast-tracked for a “reimagining,” the Walt Disney Studios announced Wednesday, with an eye toward using the same high-end CG technology Favreau employed for his version of “The Jungle Book” — which grossed $965.8 million worldwide earlier this year.

No release date has been set for the new “Lion King,” which will — like Disney’s upcoming remake of “Beauty and the Beast,” starring Emma Watson — include songs from the original movie.

Favreau and Disney Studios currently have a “Jungle Book” sequel in development, also without a release date scheduled.

The voice cast of the original “Lion King,” included actors Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Jeremy Irons. The musical version “The Lion King” debuted in 1997 and can be seen currently on Broadway, on tour in the United States (it’s at San Diego’s Civic Theatre through Sunday) and overseas in countries including China and Mexico.

Tron 3 was cancelled but they'll keep remaking these movies that don't need live action retellings... smh

The remake of The Jungle Book and Cinderella were both brilliant, so I'm excited for this!!!
It'd be great if they got some of the original voice actors involved!!

Yeah, I agree. I remember after watching The Jungle Book remake, I immediately thought "I hope The Lion King is next". I don't think it's just running out of ideas, it's also about giving amazing classic projects a chance to shine with the newest technology. Nothing will replace the originals in my book, this is just an extra treat.

Whilst there is a huge element of a 'cash in' taking place with this live action remakes, admittedly Disney has succeeded so far - Cinderella, Maleficent, Pete's Dragon and The Jungle Book were all really well done.

My only 'concern' is that they're planning it for almost everything - Dumbo, The Lion King, Peter Pan, 101 Dalmatians, Robin Hood, Mulan, Winnie The Pooh, Pinocchio, Aladdin, Sword In The Stone, Snow White, The Little Mermaid, and Tinkerbell are all in the works now, in addition to sequels to Maleficent and The Jungle Book. Plus Beauty and The Beast is out soon.

I don't blame Disney - I know I'll see them all - but I do wonder how far they can actually take it? They're already milking it with Frozen 2 and Mary Poppins 2 due soon.

Donald Glover Cast as Simba in The Lion King Remake

Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) has been cast as Simba in Disney’s remake of The Lion King, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Elf), who directed The Jungle Book remake last year, will direct the live-action adaptation. James Earl Jones will reprise his role as Mufasa. The original animated version of The Lion King was released in 1994.

This casting is the latest in a slew of new roles for Glover. He is currently starring in the Golden Globe-winning FX series “Atlanta,” which he created and co-writes. (He won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Series or Musical for playing Earnest “Earn” Marks in the show.) The series has already been renewed by FX for a 10-episode second season. In October, Glover cast as a young Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Han Solo movie. The still untitled Han Solo movie is set to be released in 2018. Last year, Glover released a new album as Childish Gambino called “Awaken, My Love.”

Hello greatest Disney movie ever
Unlike other things that wither, she preserves. She’s a constant in a world of relentless flux. She’s a beacon of immortality. Bitch, she’s Madonna.

Undoubtedly the most entertaining characters in The Lion King are the meerkat and warthog duo known as Timon and Pumbaa. The characters were voiced by Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella respectively in the 1994 animated musical, but in the live-action remake, they’ll be voiced by Billy on the Street host Billy Eichner and blockbuster comedy star Seth Rogen.
